God, something about how the note is only open for barely even a second and then he immediately falls away, moving on. I don't know what it is about it but the speed and sudden drop of the blanket really gets me.
I like to think it was something about her eternal love for him. Perhaps a short poem referring to their life or home there together, because he didn’t wanna leave. He read the note and was excited to finally leave and go see her.

Great reaction guys. Loving the channel. I recommend a movie called The Changeling made in 1980 with the great George C Scott. Chilling, and ultimately a classic ghost story with a twist.
One last comment because I loved this movie. The whole monologue about the universe and our legacy, is something I came to on my own after many nights overthinking. I'm sure many others have. Hearing it laid bear in this movie and watching the torture that the ghost inflicts on himself really jarred me to the core. Great film.
You guys continue to impress in the way that you remain so open to different forms of cinema and how your comments are so deeply thoughtful. This film, of course only played in "art" cinemas, or in the smallest cinema in a multiplex, which is why so many have missed out on the chance to see something innovative and moving. I'm interested to see your next Oscar pick. There were many that were deserving, but a whole load that weren't.
I love that you watched this movie. I don’t know anyone else who has seen it. This movie is perfection. I lost my husband of 20 years in January of this year. I’ve never been through anything harder than the last nine months. I’ll be rewatching this movie to help me with some additional closure. A few things I’ve learned, love is truly forever, love doesn’t end when you let go, and you don’t move on from someone, you move through the situation. My heart is with all of those grieving. The process never ends. ❤️
Man more reactors need to pick this up, I've been searching for one since the day I watched and only recently ones been released Such an underrated gem.
I haven't thought of this movie in years, but now that you said it, YES!! It affected me deep in my bones, and I'm always curious how others will react to it.
You at the start: All these long shots. Me: There's a pie coming up ... I'm glad you liked it, when I first saw it I was mindblown and thought about it for months after. And you're right, EVERYBODY needs to watch it. I don't know anyone else either who have seen it. David Lowery is one to look out for. Before this he did Pete's Dragon(!!) which was also really good, and the trailer for his next movie, The Green Knight, just came out and it looks bonkers as all hell in a good way.
I always interpreted the "note" thing, that we do not get to see it, as just a private thing. It's not meant for us, it's meant for him. There's something of a privacy side of the camera. We can also see this in Call Me By Your Name, when the camera moves away from the sex scenes, not because it doesn't want to show them, but it's just a private thing to do, not meant for us to see. The only scenes I didn't like in this movie were the "future" ones. The monologue of this guy was pretty bland and therefore too long and the skyscraper scene was a dumb critique of modernity without much in it. The rest, I really liked.
I found this movie by accident and loved it so much. I'm so happy you guys enjoyed it. I was very emotional after I saw it so I definitely empathize with what you said
I am so glad you guys watched it! I’ve only watched it once but it impacted me deeply and I can’t wait to revisit it. I personally have never experienced loss but I feel this be comforting for a person grieving. Now that I mention it, this movie and Hereditary (a fav of mine) are movies that deal with grief in almost polar opposite ways which reminds me why I love film :(!
I can’t bring myself to watch this movie yet but I am so glad you did. I didn’t know much about it but could tell it would be deeply emotional. I love how it impacted you both and agree with your ratings even though I haven’t seen it. I’m going to go hug my mom now. Great choice, guys!
I'm so glad you guys watched this movie. I remember watching this movie in a small theater with like 3 other people. You guys are right when you say this film would not appeal to the masses, but I still hope more people take the time to watch this movie.
For a moment I thought you were watching Ghost Story from 1981 which scared the socks off me when I watched it years (and years) ago. It's based on a novel by Peter Straub.
The ghost read the note. It read that home was last place she ever saw him, and it finally made him realize he had been waiting in vein throughout all time. He finally let go.
Alot of people tried to find the meaning behind this movie when it first came out, but I believe this is not a movie to be understood but felt. The way the shots linger and don't think is for us to find hidden clues but to get wrapped up in the moment. I specifically love that monolog the guy gives, he's basically saying life is meaningless so enjoy it, instead of being fixed in this ONE goal just enjoy your life.
This was my take just after seeing it in 2017. Spoiler alert -----> It was my favorite movie of 2017 :) Sundance 2017) 4th film, "A Ghost Story." This is why I come to Sundance! This was my most anticipated movie, and it did NOT disappoint! It was the slowest burn of a slow-burn movie I've ever seen, but not once was I bored. I don't understand some key elements, but the director gave me space to ponder and interpret. I could make it my own if I wanted to. Fun note: The aspect ratio was squared! The ghost was trapped in by walls of the movie, just as he was trapped in his own house. Killer music, too! The soundtrack will be a must buy. The passage of time was inventive and jarring. So many different things to think about and enjoy and mention. Love love love love love this movie! Big huge thumbs up!
Somehow I missed this film when it came out and I'm not sure how that happened considering I'm an A24 fanatic. When I first saw the title of this reaction I had it confused with Ghost Stories starring Martin Freeman - also from 2017. I quickly realized that was not the movie you were watching and stopped the video, found A Ghost Story on Netflix, and watched it before finishing your reaction. Wow. I'm so glad I watched this!!! Absolutely brilliant. 👻
I think this is the first "Arthouse" film that I fell in love with. The final shot is amazing. I will give it 80/100. My only real problem with the film is that one moment where the guy just kind of spells out the entire theme of the film in one monologue. It almost feels a bit expository and I would have preferred it if they kept the film's meaning upto interpretation.
Really? I thought that scene was a lot like My Dinner With Andre. In fact, I'm going to recommend it to these two because it's just one of these films that can stay with you for quite some time, running around on your brain like a hamster on its wheel
That's my least favorite part of the film as well. And as an introvert, I find it the most draining and noisiest scene (a lot of words!!) lol. But after rewatching the film, I've come up with my own interpretation: that that scene is intended to motivate C (the ghost) that he is not just a forgettable dust in this universe. That even after his death, he could still make an impact. But that's just me.
A lot of people misread it as the meaning. (I was at a Q&A where the director mentions that this scene *isn't* providing the thesis of the film.)The entire film is essentially an argument against the soft nihilism that he is spouting. This is underlined when it reveals of the ghost at the end of the speech. It's essentially saying that the ripples we create are endless.
Thanks Shaun so much for introducing me to this great film! What a beautiful, sad piece. Man, A24 publishing is everything that is good about cinema; it feels like every project they put out is what art should aspire to. Have either of you seen "Under the Silver Lake"? I think it'd be your kind of thing.
When I first watched this movie, I wasn't sure whether I had liked it or not, at the end. But everytime I thought about it, it only grew on me. And the good impression was maintained in the revisions.
Haven't seen this one so I skipped to your ratings at the end. After seeing the score you gave it, I immediately jumped on Netflix and added it to my watch list. I look forward to watching it sometime this weekend.
this film was I thought one of the oddest yet fascinating film idea's I've seen in a long time. glad you guys covered it. I agree with Shaun 10/10 Tom I didn't have nightmares though I thought about this film for weeks, and rewatched it. enjoyed your conversation about it.
Yeah...this film f'd me up for a few days. Which in my book means it's a good film. It made me question the meaning of life and I balled my eyes out for awhile. The Notebook got a couple of small tears out of me but that felt like a joke compared to this movie. I think it deserves a 10/10 as well.
LOL I love how the guy on our left says early in the movie that the piano chord and the scratching was him coming back in time and then later on when that is proven the guy on our right's like, oh yeah I knew it! I called it LOL 😆. Haha no you didn't, the other guy did hehe. Great reaction to this very rarely reacted to film. I didn't really get it when I watched it but after watching a couple of reactions it's of course a lot clearer now. You guys did a good job but credit where it's due 😆
Not only a definite lack of dialogue.... You have a very talented actor who spends the majority of the movie covered by a sheet! And we still get a broad range of emotions. Acting from beneath a drop cloth. Well done! (I'm not sure if you have already done it, but I strongly recommend "Manchester by the Sea." Casey Affleck is wonderful.)
really enjoyed the reaction, this seems like such a sad but great film. very unique. the ghost also looks so cute and innocent, you cant help but feel sorry for him.
I was surprised that they react to this movie, it is very little known and that infuriates me a bit, since it is worth it. I dare say it is a work of art. The first time I saw, left a huge emptiness in my soul, existential problems and very depressed. I'm fine now, but enjoyded that feeling that made me feel. i totally agree with Shaun, 10/10
A Ghost Story is definitely a unique film. I haven't seen anything quite like it. I agree with you both-I don't think the everyday person would like this, however.
@@LA_HA A number of reasons. Where do I begin?...Above all things, I think the pacing, and how scenes/shots are drawn out more than other films. This, coupled with the lack of dialogue, would probably be problematic for some.
@@brandonroyce2356 Yes, I see. I was writing another poster in here about the time he went to see this movie in the theater and a two people in the theater with him walked out early in the film. The note was actually blank! Rooney lost the original note so they actually don't know what she wrote. I think it said "I'm not coming back"
i think she wrote GOODBYE. So he can leave.
"I guess they're not coming" from the other ghost utterly did me in. No they moved to the next plane and only that ghost lingered.
The pang of sadness at that part. She was waiting and so lonely. Wow
This film has 2 endings, one being the ghost found the note fulfilling enough that he was able to move on. Or, the ghost found it unfulfilling thus realizing his existence was meaningless as a ghost, which makes him move on.

Great reaction. Reminds me of Interstellar without the space stuff. Especially the soundtrack.
PLEASE put Melancholia on your list. When I tell you I felt different leaving the cinema. Kirsten deserved the oscar for it.
I haven't thought of this movie in years, but now that you said it, YES!! It affected me deep in my bones, and I'm always curious how others will react to it.
That movie left me feeling utterly hopeless!
Superb reaction! You two are wonderful. More like this please. Love from NYC
I adore this film, I have seen it tons of times and still is meaningful, utterly beautiful film! So glad you guys loved it.
Saw it a few years back & it always stuck with me. So glad to see you guys watching it too and having very similar thoughts / reactions as I.
You guys are killing the reaction game!! Keep up the awesome work.
A true horror story. Loneliness, lack of purpose, generalized impotence... The biggest monsters we can (or can't) face.
If you haven't already seen it, please review Under the Skin.
Edit: Under the Skin has a great score, another reason to watch!
Cheers guys! I loved the reaction and the analysis. First time I watched the movie I couldn’t form words for like an hour
15:55 "Oh my god, is she the ghost?" HOW DID I NEVER REALIZE THIS! This is my favorite movie of all time and i never made that connection
So glad y'all covered this one. I've never heard of it so I'll definitely be checking it out!
This was my take just after seeing it in 2017. Spoiler alert -----> It was my favorite movie of 2017 :)
Sundance 2017) 4th film, "A Ghost Story."
This is why I come to Sundance!
"I wonder why it lingered on that" Bro, this entire film is a linger-a-thon lol. Great though.
Lol - I got all hyped when I first saw the title because I thought for a second that you were reacting to GHOST STORY - the 1981 film. : )
Your reviews are amazing! This is one of my favourite movies!
The red letter media guys called this their fav film of the year. It's an amazing film.
Red Letter Media is the only reason I even heard of it. They always have good taste.
Recommend Manchester by the sea if you haven’t seen it. Another Casey Affleck film. Incredible underrated actor.
YES! I love that film omg
A gut-punching emotional masterpiece. The guys would love it.
Or another great performance in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, seen by far too few people.
He’s such a talented director. Super excited to see the Green Knight from him
When I first watched this movie, I wasn't sure whether I had liked it or not, at the end.
You should watch Apocalypse Now (1979), Arrival (2016) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
this film was I thought one of the oddest yet fascinating film idea's I've seen in a long time. glad you guys covered it.
"It's a nice hill, man." --Tom
"It's a nice...yeah, nice-ass hill." --Shaun
_A Ghost Story_ (2017)
😉
LOL I love how the guy on our left says early in the movie that the piano chord and the scratching was him coming back in time and then later on when that is proven the guy on our right's like, oh yeah I knew it! I called it LOL 😆. Haha no you didn't, the other guy did hehe. Great reaction to this very rarely reacted to film. I didn't really get it when I watched it but after watching a couple of reactions it's of course a lot clearer now. You guys did a good job but credit where it's due 😆
If you want to watch another artistic and meditative film about the passage of time, I recommend *Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring*
I've never heard of this, i watched your review and i've just ordered it. How the hell did i miss this? Thanks, guys!
really enjoyed the reaction, this seems like such a sad but great film. very unique. the ghost also looks so cute and innocent, you cant help but feel sorry for him.
14:27 finally showed your differences... and TY!
Awesome they both got hair cuts haha. You guys look great 👌
Man I loved this movie soo much. I’m so glad you guys watched it and liked it!!
I had forgotten this lil gem. Agree with Shaun's 10/10. . .it does all things film does and in such great ways.
That is so cool Tom and Shawn
I saw this in the theater. It's such a thoughtful film, I couldn't get it out of my mind for days.
Hey who recognizes himself in the guy at 13:00... a few beers and Philosophical Country here we go!!
Beers? We don't need no stinkin' beers. haha
A Ghost Story is definitely a unique film. I haven't seen anything quite like it. I agree with you both-I don't think the everyday person would like this, however.
You don't? I'm so curious about what you think and why. Why do you think the every day person wouldn't like it?
@@LA_HA A number of reasons. Where do I begin?...Above all things, I think the pacing, and how scenes/shots are drawn out more than other films. This, coupled with the lack of dialogue, would probably be problematic for some.
@@brandonroyce2356 Yes, I see. I was writing another poster in here about the time he went to see this movie in the theater and a two people in the theater with him walked out early in the film. I thought of your post.
It's just that, somehow, it makes me a little more sad than the film itself to think it can possibly, very possibly, be true. That's all
First off let me thank you guys for reviewing this movie, because I wouldn't have watched it otherwise and I'd be much poorer for not seeing it. If was were able to support you guys i would.
This was a masterpiece of film in my opinion and should be seen by all.
The note was actually blank! Rooney lost the original note so they actually don't know what she wrote. So it's completely accurate to say that it could make you think of what would be the thing that would help you move on. This is one of my top favourite films and I'm so glad you watched it and loved it. The score is so beautiful! Daniel Hart truly is an amazing musician. He also composed the music for The Green Knight coming out soon! I also have the soundtrack on vinyl 💜
Great choice of film to react to. A brave, original and intelligent film which is emotionally devastating.
The chocolate pie is from a vegan restaurant in north Texas called Spiral Diner. One of my favorite places.
The 9 minutes of Rooney eating pie is cinema
You guys need to watch the Frontier Trilogy "Sicario" (2015), "Hell or Highwater" (2016) and "Wind River" (2017) all written by Taylor Sheridan. I promise, you will like them!
It’s hard to say which of them is best too. I love Wind River and it might be my least favorite of the 3!
@@themarathonman2874 funny i love wind river the most ^^ Jeremy Renner is phenomenal in it.
"Wind River" took my breath away and changed my world. Renner and Olsen over-delivered.
Tom, you probably already know this, but, you're super hot mate
