CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) describes his morning routine of vanity.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Bret Easton Ellis's dark and violent satire of America in the 1980s is brought to the screen in this unsettling drama with blackly comic overtones. Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), the son of a wealthy Wall Street financier, is pursuing his own lucrative career with his father's firm. Bateman is the prototypical yuppie, obsessed with success, fashion, and style. He is also a serial killer who murders, rapes, and mutilates both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or reason. Donald Kimble (Willem Dafoe), a police detective, questions Bateman about the disappearance of Paul Allen (Jared Leto), whom Patrick murdered several days earlier. As Kimble stays on Bateman's trail, Bateman's mask of studied, distant cool begins to fall apart. American Psycho also features Reese Witherspoon as Bateman's girlfriend, as well as Samantha Mathis, Chloe Sevigny, and Guinevere Turner; the latter also co-authored the screenplay. Controversy followed the production from the start, when speculation that Leonardo Di Caprio would play Bateman sparked concerns that he would lure preteens to an R-rated movie. Di Caprio soon bowed out of the project, and original leading man Bale was reinstated. Later, a group of Toronto residents attempted to block filming in that city after Canadian serial killer Paul Bernardo claimed that Ellis's novel inspired his murder spree.

In the book, he takes like 1 hour explaining his morning routine. It is obsessive.
That's the point. However, I do wish the author didn't make us go through entire chapters of Bateman describing what people are wearing. Like, I get it.
@@every_username_is_taken I actually like those contrasting bits from the book. Book Patrick thinks about murder in the same vapid and extremely specific detail as he does Joe Cocker's career, or his own morning and workout routine. While you read about the morning routine, you are understandably bored, when you read about the murder, you are understandably horrified. To Patrick, it's all the same, but to us non-insane readers, it's a wild shift that seems to come from nowhere. I actually think the boring parts elevate the horrifying parts even though they are written almost exactly the same way.

Shows how much he only cares about status
The best part is that people hunted down the catalogues for those years and realised that none of the outfits make a lick of sense. The patterns, cuts and colours don't go together at all.

In a sense, that's the point of this scene. Psychopaths, on first meeting, ARE inspirational - or at least admirable in some way. That way is superficial imagery - especially imagery that pop culture glorifies (and its opposite it highly scorns). Makes you wonder if pop culture itself is based on sociopathic values. If you got that idea, then the film did what it set out to do.

Wow. This scene is chilling. I'm glad that Christian Bale did this movie and not Leonardo DiCaprio (that's who the director originally wanted but he had other commitments). I think Bale was perfect for this role. I can't think of anyone who could have done a better job.
The perfect Batman, and the perfect Bateman😂
The director didn't want Dicaprio, she wanted Bale over him and she got sacked for it, only when Dicaprio was talked out of the role did the pair get reinstated.
I wanted to see Paul Allen do the jobb.
DiCaprio is a fine actor, to be sure...but he'd have been a lousy choice to play Bateman. His style of acting is more demonstrative, loud, even over-the-top.
Bale tends to play things at the other end of the spectrum: cold, aloof, detached, at times virtually flat-lining emotionally. These being qualities/affectations that define a soulless, self-absorbed, and narcissistic character like Patrick Bateman.
Little wonder that "American Psycho" was his breakout performance. I think it
allowed him to play to his strengths as an actor to a degree that if one didn't know any better, it wouldn't be hard to believe it was written with him in mind.
*Christian Bale's face is plain* (not saying he's ugly or average-looking but how we expect the average man should look like even though the average man is much uglier) *but not average which is perfect for the character.*
Notice how he tells us where he lives first, before his name.
the focus in both the movie and in the book, is very much on material status. we see it here in this scene, long explanations of everything he´s wearing/ using, especially the brand if it´s clothes, accessories and such.
heck at one point he´s stuffed a body in a overnight bag and is loading the bag in a car trunk, and someone he knows spots him and starts talking to him, and he´s like " ohh shit" and the person looks at the bag ( and it´s clearly not a set of golf clubs that´s in there) and the person just compliments on how the nice the bag is.
Also after he kills Paul Allen, he goes into his apartment and he feels a moment of panic realizing Paul's is more upscale than his.
valar “it’s obviously more expensive than mine” lol
Yep, the whole point of the movie/book is how a sociopath can blend in perfectly among those Wall Street executives, even though he's constantly raising red flags.
The book was so painful to read at times. So much description in what everyone was wearing and who it was made by. I get why he does it, but 400 pages of it was a little rough at times.

Beauty routine for a psycho killer in 2000 is a norm in 2019 for “influencers”
It's set in the late 1980's but yeah
Yep
Yep
Probably because influencers livelihood is on how good they look and this character is narcissistic and wants to look good
I was living with psychopath narciccist its so true movie, they are not like influencers who only want to show sth and share with you and of course something narcisissitic is in all of us, but these psychopaths are sth another, just read or see about narcissist. Maybe who wasnt met them cant understand.
I don’t know why but after watching this video I want to take care of my skin a lot more than I do

Welcome to the club.
Me too and I've started it. I'm drinking more water than anything now, I hardly drink coke anymore and stopped putting sugar in my tea. I consume a lot of anti oxidant foods such as blueberries, dark chocolate and leafy greens. After shaving I always apply moisturiser to my face and in the shower I use a milk and honey shower cream
@@electricfishfan Its not about femininity when you think about it. Just think about the fact it prevents you getting acne. Do you like getting spots and blackheads on your face? I sure as hell don't

After I remove the ice pack İn the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser then a honey almond body scrub and on the face, an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I Apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older then moisturizer then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion there is an idea of a Patrick Bateman, some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me only an entity something illusory and though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can Shake my hand and fell flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable I simply am not there

He is a psychopath. He lacks sympathy or any kinda feeling. He does all these still feels empty inside.
Kinda like Hannibal, he goes around telling jokes about how he kills and eats people and everyone is like, haha wow your so funny
The Ted Bundy effect.
This movie for me is by far Cristian Bale's best. The character was perfect in every way and he, with his talent, made sure it was a success. And four years later seeing him in the driver with that extreme thinness, you realize the kind of professional this guy is. Just smoke it.
You are not alone in that. People said this was "career suicide" but it was quite the opposite
@@PJ.Rob06I havent seen the film but why would it be career killing?
@@MFsecret1 That I don't know.
On paper, if he weren’t a lunatic killer, Patrick has actually very admirable qualities lol discipline to keep in top shape with rigorous exercise, health conscious diet and consistency.
Not to mention a top notch skin care routine haha
With narcissists, perception is more important than integrity or actual strength of character
you don't get it ...he doesn't really keep this routine ....this is what he tells people ...he has very little discipline that is why he boasts about this routine. He thinks this is noteworthy ...he has no sense of self ....and so he can't get out of his own way in life and causes most of his own problems but doesn't know why ...he has no character...he is so naive he doesn't even realize people feel more relaxed around those with character ...he doesn't know he should boast about how honest or kind he is ...he boasts about his morning routine which is probably not his real routine after ya know killing people the night before ..but the perception is all for him

In the book these lines are found in the end of the last chapter, it’s part of the internal thoughts he’s having when there are “no more barriers to cross” I always liked how they tied it into the intro and then at the end of the movie we still get that rest of the monologue

Did it actually work ?😂have any effect?
@@guydutoit61 of course, what he's actually doing here isn't actually the craziest thing in the world, its the amount of what he's doing which is too much. What he's doing is controlling the natural oils that form on your face while you sleep in the night, potential sweat, and little debris wether it is dust or what have you from your bed. The specific facial products though help reduce built up oils in your pours, which is one of the main reasons why we get pimples. But of course, after you use product like this, it dries your skin out so you need a moisturizer, other wise dry skin can lead to damaging it. The reason why teens are so known to be pimply in high school is because the body's oil production goes crazy during puberty, so in my senior year following this routine reduced all my pimples by the time i was a freshy in college lol

I'm reading American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis and I have to say that I can only see Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman when I read the book. That only goes to show, in my eyes at least, just how Christian Bale nailed the character in the movie.
Its amazing. The book was very controversial when it was released in 1991. It was hated on by people like Gloria Steinem (Christian Bale's step mom in real life) for how it portrayed women and how shallow Wall Street Yuppies were. But now, thirty years later, American Psycho is considered a masterpiece both as a novel and as a movie. Damn, it even has a friggen musical with Matt Smith as Patrick Bateman. This only goes to show that if you truly believe in what it is you are making and if you stick with it then one day it will be appreciated.
I live in my mom’s house. My name is Matthew. I'm 28 years old. I attempt to take care of myself with a balanced diet and a rigorous exercise routine, which will always start tomorrow. In the morning, I try to wake up at 8am, and usually fail. My alarm clock rings until 12pm, which is when I get up. I start up my computer and stare at the loading screen. At around 3pm I know my day has truly begun when I see the comforting logo on the screen, “RUclips”.
There is an idea of what I need to do to better my life. Many ideas of how to reach a higher level of being, and though I may talk about unfucking my situation, my true desire to do so is not really there.
If this is not me... 😂
Yeah this isn’t totally me or anything no not at all
