In the episode, Jeremy Brett gave a slight alteration to this fake-romance subplot. Sherlock was crying when he realised the maid's love was real & he said, "You've touched my heart." He didn't wanna hurt her, but it's what he had to do to solve the case. The screenwriter & the director agreed, them the rest is history.
I REALLY hope they include/reference this story in BBC's Sherlock series. A show, I feel that Jeremy would've liked if only for all the references to the original.
They definitely did, in the episode "Charles Augustus Magnussen." There was a lot of references to CHAS (the acronym used for the original story of "Charles Augustus Milverton"). Also, I can't speak for Brett, but I personally do feel like Conan Doyle would have liked or at least appreciated the BBC show because of its accuracy but also its creative liberties. Conan Doyle, we must remember, wasn't the biggest fan at all of Holmes and his stories. Because of this, he really didn't care WHAT people did with his character. However, I think he would have appreciated the BBC show's creativity if he lived to see our modern age.
I love dr watsons reaction😂
