    Brett is the best Sherlock from the books. His mannerisms are so good. Cumberbatch is an excellent modernized version.

    Wonderfully cast series. Even Moriority is cast well. The one thing I hated about the Sherlock series is they tried to make the Professor instead of a menace and power behind the underworld. Into a Joker style villain which didn't work at all.

    It's almost straight out of the novels: "he has no ambition and no energy. He will not even go out of his way to verify his own solutions, and would rather be considered wrong than take the trouble to prove himself right. Again and again I have taken a problem to him, and have received an explanation which has afterwards proved to be the correct one. And yet he was absolutely incapable of working out the practical points" Oh and he doesn't just order the books: "The conclusions of every department are passed to him, and he is the central exchange, the clearinghouse, which makes out the balance. All other men are specialists, but his specialism is omniscience. We will suppose that a minister needs information as to a point which involves the Navy, India, Canada and the bimetallic question; he could get his separate advices from various departments upon each, but only Mycroft can focus them all, and say offhand how each factor would affect the other. They began by using him as a short-cut, a convenience; now he has made himself an essential. In that great brain of his everything is pigeon-holed and can be handed out in an instant."

    I bought the complete Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes box set over a decade ago, some of the best money I ever spent - The definitive Holmes and a man much missed. I also loved both versions of Watson in the series...and Mycroft was gold. The only down side is that in the latter episodes, you can see that Jeremy Brett's health is failing him. I refuse to watch any of the modern stuff, I know exactly what I will get and I can live without it.

    Why does Mycroft look old enough to be Sherlock's grandfather? And why is every version afraid to cast a fat actor, when the stories specifically say Mycroft is obese?

    • @cindystewart5417
      @cindystewart5417 3 месяца назад

      Good question. In the stories Mycroft is 7 years older than Sherlock. In reality Charles Gray was 5 years older than Jeremy Brett. Genetics perhaps? I mean they are about the same age difference as their characters. He is described by Doyle as being much larger and stouter than Sherlock, which you can see by the way Brett can virtually hide behind Gray (which happens just after this clip ends, of course). It isn't perfect, of course, because you want someone who can act the part, and Brett was rather tall himself at 6 ft 1. Besides it seems like their definition of portly and massive in the 1890s was much different than today's my 600 pound life version. Sidney Paget's drawings of Mycroft seem to show him as merely a large man, and Steele (the illustrator for Collier's) never draws him.
