3:42 great moment by Jeremy, calm excited professional manner of kindly asking the guards to shout fire only for him to call it out loudly and to reprimand them on their performance right afterwards is amazing
Jeremy Brett is the one. No doubt. The way he stares, sighs. Everything. He is the Sherlock Holmes that you portray in your mind while reading the novel. Best of best. I m not even in my 20s but i like the one too much. Like old is gold.
I loved that! Jeremy cannot be beaten as my favorite Sherlock, in fact I only think of him usually, if someone mentions something about Sherlock Holmes. One of my quotations from him is when Dr. Grimesby Roylette finally storms out and he says, "What a very amiable person!" and "Thank you Mrs. Hudson, just another client." Then there's "Watson, you have a blazing talent for stating the obvious." "I feel you have erred (the way he pronounces that, as if to rub it in on Watson for the way he writes up their adventures). I love it when he asks Dr. Huxtable to forgive him for rummaging through his pockets while the good professor had been passed out,,,, then he says, "It is not often that so notable a person as yourself is beached upon my hearth's rug." And finally, in The Devil's Foot, Watson says something to Holmes, like "I'm sure the police will be in attendance and have begun to form their own conclusion." to which Sherlock says, "However erroneous they may be." that one cracks me up.
These Granada Productions were very faithful to the stories. For decades since the beginning of film Holmes fans were waiting for these superlative expositions. Jeremy Brett was everything needed and more. The production values, the sets and the other actors Burke, Hardwicke et al brought the stories to life perfectly. The beauty of all this is that now any director or actors hired to have a go at the Holmes stories do not have to compete as it has already been done. So now they are free to experiment. The Benedict Cumberbatch/Martin Freeman productions were great. I hope they do more. Long live our appreciation and enjoyment of Jeremy Brett, we were lucky to have shared time on this planet with such a great actor.
Well said! Other people could experiment with Mr. Holmes' adventures because there already exists a faithful adaptation. I do love Sherlock BBC and their stories and cast, because I know their Sherlock is slightly different from Jeremy Brett's Mr. Holmes; both are different and well done in their own ways!
Just watched the Solitary Cyclist tonight! Watson: Did I really do remarkably badly? *Holmes turns away as if to ask a nonexistent person if Watson is seriously asking the question just posed* Holmes: Yes!

Jeremy Brett's line readings were sublime, but his wordless moments I find equally stunning. That whistle from "The Resident Patient" in your last clip is priceless. I wonder if it was an ad lib? It certainly stole the scene right out from under Nick Clay's dramatic declaration.
AND YET - it wasn't too much! You couldn't really accuse him of scene-stealing because he's both completely in character and isn't being all OTT 'Look at me!' about it! I would have loved to have seen him onstage
@@LexiWolfey No, the whistle is almost under-playing. And it's so unexpected, especially after Dr. Trevelyan's almost melodramatic announcement.. The whistle seems somehow American (I am an American). I thought it was Jeremy's ad lib, but I looked it up and it's in the Conan Doyle story.
A mon avis, Jeremy Brett a été Sherlock Holmes lui-même !!! C'est vraiment incroyable que quelqu'un puisse interpréter ce personnage si magnifique, si génial comme cet acteur extraordinaire. Every actor expresses well some aspect of the Sherlock Holmes mythos. Jeremy Brett focused on the character himself, the darkness, the pain of a powerful mind, the torment that the only serious use was in tackling evil - giving him only bleakness and horror to look forward to. I think Brett showed that the seven percent solution was not just the mundane aspects of life but that Holmes' every waking moment was spent in a nightmare or craving one because the pauses were worse, and that the nightmares were devouring him. Under such conditions, what's a little irritation? Particularly as nobody becomes a doctor or a scientist if they're not quite capable of observation, deduction and differential diagnosis. Indeed Conan Doyle based his methods on the practices of both. His bumbling detectives are products of his experience with actual detectives who attempted to destroy his career by slander, threats and intimidation, so we can take it as read that detectives of the time deserved every bit of his venom. As such, all the detectives and both the Watsons are superb in themselves. Watson has his moments and is portrayed as someone who conscientiously tries to practice what he has been taught, albeit not that well. Holmes' frustration comes from knowing Watson could do better. The dynamics between the actors shows this tension magnificently. For these dynamics and inner workings, Jeremy Brett and the remainder of the cast are absolutely superb. The writers and producers, not so much - Jeremy Brett had to put them in their place and threatened to quit a few times if they wouldn't stop interfering. His strength and presence make those interventions possible and gave us a rendition that was infinitely superior to the watered-down amateur dramatics version originally planned.
I was watching a Jeremy Irons film today and was commenting to my wife on how he reminded me of the great Jeremy Brett. She said, "who is Jeremy Brett ?" I said, "you're joking right ?" "Only the greatest Sherlock Holmes there has ever been and ever will be." Others will play Holmes, but Jeremy Brett WAS Holmes. WHAT CLASS !! Bless you Jeremy...I miss you.

I only watched Season One once. ONCE. But I've read the canon so many times. In each scene here, I knew EXACTLY what scene it was and what was going to happen just by the location and context. That's how accurate and faithful these adaptations were.

No one can ever portray the character of Sherlock Holmes like Jeremy Brett.
benedict cumberbatch was also very good as holmes in the reimagined modern world version of holmes not to detract from Brett
3:42 great moment by Jeremy, calm excited professional manner of kindly asking the guards to shout fire only for him to call it out loudly and to reprimand them on their performance right afterwards is amazing
Jeremy Brett is Timeless!!!!
"Watson, that is a very loose translation". HA!
🤣
📌This dialogue is just pure class, and combined with the delivery of a master, you end up with a legendary performance.
Jeremy Brett is the one. No doubt. The way he stares, sighs. Everything. He is the Sherlock Holmes that you portray in your mind while reading the novel. Best of best. I m not even in my 20s but i like the one too much. Like old is gold.
He was and still is the best Sherlock Holmes. Never ever be another like him. It's as if he was born to play him.
He is amazing! And I say, "is" because although he's nolonger with us, he lives on in these movies, TV shows that he so magnificently made.
What a inspiration Brett is, will never ever think he has passed on.
Hudson, just another client."
Then there's "Watson, you have a blazing talent for stating the obvious." "I feel you have erred (the way he pronounces that, as if to rub it in on Watson for the way he writes up their adventures). I love it when he asks Dr. Huxtable to forgive him for rummaging through his pockets while the good professor had been passed out,,,, then he says, "It is not often that so notable a person as yourself is beached upon my hearth's rug."
And finally, in The Devil's Foot, Watson says something to Holmes, like "I'm sure the police will be in attendance and have begun to form their own conclusion." to which Sherlock says, "However erroneous they may be." that one cracks me up.
He is brilliant as Sherlock Holmes, as i read the stories I picture him in my mind version.
*Holmes turns away as if to ask a nonexistent person if Watson is seriously asking the question just posed*
Holmes: Yes!
Steel Evangelist Hi Steel.. You deserve a house, for free.
Well, if you happen to find one I'd be more than happy to take it! XD
+Steel Evangelist Sorry, I'm just advocating free housing.
From the day I first watched him to today, this man is the voice I hear when I read the stories of Sherlock Holmes.
What hurts the most is that i can never look forward to new episodes or seasons which would have Jeremy Brett in it :( very hurtful :( Jeremy, people still want more of you. We probably couldn't get enough of you :)
I very much regret that Mister Brett died September 12, 1995, of heart failure. Rest In Peace.
Emerald Grace I feel your pain.
Reading your tribute with a teary eye...
One of the best actors ever. I loved him so much and miss him very much 😢❤
Officer: Mr. Holmes--The goose, the goose Mr. Holmes!
Sherlock Holmes: What of it, man? Has it come back to life and flapped off to the kittchen window?!
Officer: N-no, no sir.
OMG XD LOL!! That totally cracked me up!
LMAO, you beat me to it!
Vladpryde Hi Vladpryde.. You deserve a house, for free.
Thomas h cullen
As long as it's in Arizona with Air Conditioning, then okay. :)
Vladpryde Every human being is everything.. this means that a refugee in the Ukraine is the nihilism caused by looking at encyclopaedias, or that the hairdresser is a wrestler, or, that during the Battle of Hastings, Beyoncé was performing live.. because every human being is everything (including Anne Boleyn, and Neil Armstrong), every human being deserves free housing.
Thomas h cullen
......okay then.
But we're admiring Jeremy Brett and Sherlock Holmes on this video. Not free housing.
I thought it was Jeremy's ad lib, but I looked it up and it's in the Conan Doyle story.
it's in the story but he chose to portray in that particular way, so perfect.
Jeremy Brett really did do the best at capturing the personality of the Holmes in the books.
Not that most people have actually READ THE BOOKS.
Edd Jones
Kudos and congratulations to you then. I applaud.
Jace Roberts
Read zem all. HUE HUE HUE. If you are a book worm, book reader, or book eater, you HAVE TO read Holmes. If you want to learn and gain wisdom you have to read Holmes, Tsun Tzu's Art of War, among few other books.
mindsoulbody
I LOVE the Art of War!! To tell the truth I've been thinking of reading through it again. :D You guys have no idea how happy it makes me to know that there actually are other people out there who read books.
i have
re-reading sherlock holmes
Jeremy Brett - certainly the best Sherlock Holmes there was, is, and will be. He truly was a master, especially in this role.
for me hes was the quintessential Mr Sherlock Holmes ,such a brilliant tv series Jeremy played the part well
Every time I read a Sherlock Holmes novel, it's Jeremy Brett's voice I hear whenever Holmes speaks.
My favorite, when Homes arrives at a meeting first: "Why, you're early, Mr. Homes!" to which he replies:
"It is often the case with punctuality".
Been watching his Holmes for 30+ years and I never tire of it.
Watching him brought me so much joy! Thank God I got a boxed series CD set as a christmas gift!
I meant DVD set...
I own the entire DVD set too. I don't think they ever aired the movies where I'm from, so that box is something to look forward to.
The absolute best. Fond memories of my teenage years watching his episodes.
He is the best Sherlock Holmes!
This is absolutely wonderful! I love Jeremy Brett, as the character, Sherlock Holmes!
The best Holmes ever!!!
Indobedably!
inconceivable!
"The Goose! The Goose, Mr. Holmes! What of it, man? Has it come back to life and flapped off through the kitchen window?" That line never fails to bring a smile to my face and always makes me laugh.
i just hope some old man comes to my office and tell go get some books from the desk
and when i turn around i see jeremy brett and says "do you mind if i spare a cigarette in your office ?"
.. i miss jeremy brett
1:44 The way he starts baring his teeth like a cat that's getting ready to pounce on its prey is AMAZING!
No disrespect to other actors who have played the role but Jeremy Brett is the GOAT....he IS Sherlock Holmes. Just brilliant.
The greatest portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, by an amazing actor. I also think that the two actors who played DR Watson were also fantastic
I can't watch My Fair Lady anymore without seeing Sherlock Holmes
Then you will LOVE his portrayal of Mr. Dewinter in Rebecca and as Lord Goring in An Ideal Husband...
Jeremy Brett was offered the role of James Bond at one time. Can you imagine him delivering 'Bond. James Bond' in that fabulous voice he had? Opportunity missed.
Oh lord I remember having the biggest crush on Jeremy Brett when I was around 13, 5 years later and I still find him just as mesmerising 😅😅.
Ellie Louise Join the club 😂👍
Lexi Wolfe glad to be a member 😂😂
Unbelievable talent. Best Sherlock Holmes ever ... by far !
Watching this again....and again....and again....i believe this is my fav vid so far!
Such a great actor he is Sherlock Holmes himself RIP dear Jeremy Brett ❤
I watched these as a kid, so I didn't really realize or remember the acting. But it is who I think of first. And that theme at the end hits hard.
Brett is The Definitive Holmes. He has captured the very essence of Conan Doyle's exquisite character and breathed such life into him as to make Holmes real beyond imagining.
"Ha!" 😅 Love this man
YES- he IS "THE" best Sherlock Holmes-- in every way.. Wish he could have lived long enough to finish his plans-- they were to produce MORE!!!
Best Sherlock Holmes ever and even Dr. Watson too - from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Television Series) .. I have watched all the Sherlock Holmes movies from the 30's to 2010's for the past 2 yrs ... I've been watching an episode a day of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (TV Series 1984 - 1994) it's just great - something happened in the middle of Season 3 .. the stories just got better and the crimes/mysteries harder to solve (EXCELLENT Now) and now into Season 5 ..
Jeremy Brett is the finest Sherlock Holmes ever. Such a stunning performance.
I only watched Season One once. ONCE. But I've read the canon so many times. In each scene here, I knew EXACTLY what scene it was and what was going to happen just by the location and context. That's how accurate and faithful these adaptations were.
Thank you, so much, for this delightful compendium! Such a pleasure!
Love the way HOLMES STANDS UP TO
COWARD BULLIES!
No-one else even comes close.
Godspeed Sir, and thank-you....
I absolutely adore Brett as Sherlock Holmes. He is the perfect embodiment of the Great Detective. While I've enjoyed other "incarnations" only Jeremy Brett is Holmes. He is, to me, forever, The Man.
Anybody else get chills just from the theme?
I just started reading the books and this is EXACTLY how I picture Holmes. Must watch now. :D
+ChertotheZ Do you have to buy them in order to watch?
