A song about the condition of our country as we approached our Bicentennial! They had 2 lead singers back then. One was Tommy Shaw and the other Dennis DeYoung. JY, James Young also sang lead occasionally as well!
14 years old going to see ZZ Top in Columbia SC 1975. Styx was the opener and the coliseum lights went out a laser hit the big mirror ball and they played a song called Light Up Everybody. And I think everyone did spark a doobie up. The smell was instant and it only got better. I was amazed going home back to Augusta. Rock n Roll was in my soul from that day until this one Augusta Ga
Styx is a great rock band from the 70's-80's. They had so many great songs such as "Babe", "Lady", "Lorelei", "Come Sail Away", "Renegade", "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)", "The Best Of Times", "Show Me The Way", "Don't Let It End", "Why Me", "Borrowed Time", "Rockin' The Paradise", "Mr. Roboto" etc.
The entire "Grand Illusion" and "Pieces of Eight" albums are must listens. My favorite tune off either of these records is a Tommy Shaw jam "Man in the Wilderness". Add to your list a song called "Crystal Ball" from an earlier album.
Whenever this was played on the radio back in the day, they always included "Prelude 12" the intro with it. It's a shame you missed out on that experience. Great song!
GREAT reaction & review. Song was written in 1975 for the upcoming 1976 Bicentennial. It's basically saying like a young girl our country has grown older and completely lost our innocence. By far my favorite Styx song from my favorite album of all time Equinox. Thanks for playing this.
Beautiful haunting song with an awesome ending - glad you reviewed! For me - it never matters what the song or lyrics are about - if it rocks and has great vocals and guitars - all I need.
Styx at their most theatrical and proggiest.Still their best song, Still fresh, still interesting, about 48 years later. Even better live, minutes-long ovations(I've seen Styx 4 times). Sadly, the lyrics are still relevant today
Two of my favorite Styx songs off of The Grand Illusion album are “Miss America” sang by lead guitarist James “JY” Young, and “A Man In The Wilderness” sang by rhythm/lead guitarist Tommy Shaw. Tommy wrote the song the day after they opened for Kansas and seeing them live for the first time. It was influenced by their epic progressive rock style.
A perfect song on a perfect album. I remember when I first saw the album cover. I thought to myself, these guys are interesting. I find their albums from the 70s to be incredibly magical.
Biz! This is one of my favorite bands! I have seen them live about 8 times. They still tour today and are worth going to see! I can list 25-30 songs that are all fire! I have commented on many many of your reactions. You should react to the whole album Grand Illusion. Every song is kick ass.
So lift up your heart and make a new start. Lead us away from here. Styx were making a plea at the time and didnt realize they were telling a more relevant future. I love America, and whatever the price, i will pay.
Dennis DeYoung has said in an interview that it wasn't necessarily a tribute to the bicentennial celebration but more of an honest assessment of how commercialized he thought the celebration had become.
Styx is one of my top 5 fav's, along with Steely Dan, Chicago, Rush, and Pink Floyd! I recently had to expand to top 6 to accommodate Supertramp! My 3 year old grandson can hear any of those bands and shout out who they are!
Equinox was before Tommy Shaw joined Styx. Other great songs from this album are, Lorelei, and Midnight Ride. My favorite STYX album is The Grand Illusion. 🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️
Yes, this song is about America. Dennis DeYoung has mentioned the 1976 Bicentenial as motivation but I personally see it as a reflection of the US post-Vietnam, post-Watergate. America was not a child any more. But we can make a brave new start. There is a future that is lead from here...This was never a single from the band but this was the song that fans came to hear in the early days of the band. This and Lady, which showed the versatality of the band before their multi-platinum run of success with the Grand Illusion - Pieces of Eight - Cornerstone and the Paradise Theater.
Similar riff as Steve Miller Bands "Wintertime". but Styx is one of those bands who were deceptively "Pop", but when it came time to deliver the goods, could crunch out some hard rock vibes with the very best.
Yes, this song is about America the "Red, White, and Blue" and written just before the Bicentenial. "Once long ago, a word from your lips and the world turned around", "Your not a child anymore", "So lift up your heart, make a new start And lead us away from here" - as usual hopeful at the end. This song is preceeded on the "Equinox" album by acoustic into. track "Prelude 12" (by the original member before Tommy Shaw, John Curulewski who left after this album and Tommy joined for the tour). As in my comments to your reaction to "Crystal Ball", Styx has 3 lead singers. This one and "Come Sail Away" you did are Dennis DeYoung, and "Crystal Ball" is Tommy Shaw. I like to suggest alternating between Dennis and Tommy songs with a few James "JY" Young ones, so I suggest next either "Fooling Yourself"(Album: ruclips.net/video/apTy_Wez4V4/видео.html , Live: ruclips.net/video/brDDzKOcvPA/видео.html ) or "Man In The WIlderness" (Extended version: ruclips.net/video/biKrDFBp0ns/видео.html ).
subscribed...I'm all about that trap, but I can't not show love for classic monsters like this.. that guitar 04:20 build up is goosebump magic... the definition of rocknroll
Please do Renegade - Tommy Shaw from Styx on Daryl’s House. Daryl’s House is back on. Saw Styx at Fox Theatre in Atlanta recently amazing. - seen them several times
A song about the condition of our country as we approached our Bicentennial! They had 2 lead singers back then. One was Tommy Shaw and the other Dennis DeYoung. JY, James Young also sang lead occasionally as well!
FYI Tommy Shaw was not in the band when this was recorded. Their next album 'Crystal Ball' had his fingerprints all over it.
Listen to a recent song by this singer Dennis DeYoung called a kingdom Ablaze. It's as good as this and his voice has not changed!
THE GRAND ILLUSION-STYX was one of my faves
14 years old going to see ZZ Top in Columbia SC 1975. Styx was the opener and the coliseum lights went out a laser hit the big mirror ball and they played a song called Light Up Everybody. The Grand Illusion album was epic. The "Castle Walls" synth reminds me of the Halloween theme. "Miss America" was a great deep track.
Review the album the grand illussion
The most underrated song of theirs, imo, is Half Penny Two Penny/AD1958.
Great song, thanks for this! Play more Styx, anything with any of the 3 singers!
I saw STYX in 2022, and they are GREAT live. One of the best live bands I’ve ever seen.
The entire "Grand Illusion" and "Pieces of Eight" albums are must listens. My favorite tune off either of these records is a Tommy Shaw jam "Man in the Wilderness". Add to your list a song called "Crystal Ball" from an earlier album.
The Grand Illusion & Pieces Of Eight are my favorite albums over all by them but gems like this song are right up there with those albums.
Whenever this was played on the radio back in the day, they always included "Prelude 12" the intro with it. It's a shame you missed out on that experience. Great song!

Queen of Spades❤is a must do live.❤😂
Their songs Queen of Spades and Born for Adventure are MUST listens!
This is Styx's Stairway to Heaven - and my favorite song of theirs. Another great Epic Masterpiece of theirs is Castle Walls
Styx at their most theatrical and proggiest.Still their best song, Still fresh, still interesting, about 48 years later. Even better live, minutes-long ovations(I've seen Styx 4 times). Sadly, the lyrics are still relevant today
The lyrics are even more relevant today than they were back then

The Grand illusion is a must IMHO.
And Miss America.
A perfect song on a perfect album. I remember when I first saw the album cover. I thought to myself, these guys are interesting. I find their albums from the 70s to be incredibly magical.
Love this tune
My favorite Styx song
Awesome song! Try The Grand Illusion next for more awesomeness
Dude, you missed a hell of a party in the 70s. It indeed was epic.
Great reaction! No stops! Excellent!
Saw Styx in 2000 at The House of Blues, still kicked ass but also the loudest concert I've been to, and I've been to more than a few!
One of my top favorite Styx songs.
Biz! This is one of my favorite bands! I have seen them live about 8 times. They still tour today and are worth going to see! I can list 25-30 songs that are all fire! I have commented on many many of your reactions. You should react to the whole album Grand Illusion. Every song is kick ass.
My favorite Styx song. Equinox is their best.
The "Caught in the Act" live album Dennis holds the last "Moooooooore" 47 seconds.😲
Love Styx. They still tour a lot, still rock. Do Snowblind, crystal ball, and of course Ms America BIZ.
One of my favorite Styx songs !❤
So lift up your heart and make a new start. Lead us away from here. Styx were making a plea at the time and didnt realize they were telling a more relevant future. I love America, and whatever the price, i will pay.
Awesome song
Right on. Thanks for sharing.
Back when Styx was truly good
It was written about the Bicentennial celebration and where we were at during that time.
So glad you dig it bro!!! Next try out other of their earlier stuff like Lady & Lorelei!! 👊💥🍻
I believe in 1976 the did this song as a tribute to America's bicentennial celebration.
A fun song on the Equinox album is “Light Up”. “Midnight Ride”, and “Lorelei” are also excellent.
THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL EARLYYYYY PROGGY STYX MUSIC BIZ, YESSSSS!!! 👍😊 YOU'LL LIKE : CRYSTAL BALL 😊
Easily their best song from a great album! Their best album, in my opinion, is The Grand Illusion!
Saw them at an outdoor concert with Blue Oyster Cult. A good layback wayback party.
Equinox was before Tommy Shaw joined Styx. Other great songs from this album are, Lorelei, and Midnight Ride. My favorite STYX album is The Grand Illusion. 🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️
The rest of the album is a banger, dive in and enjoy.
What the heck, Part II 😁 So the album title song: THE GRAND ILLUSION probably (haven't heard every song) my Favorite Guitar 🎸 SOLO!!! Peace 🕊️☮️

Part III Oops! Favorite Guitar Solo of theirs 😊
" Light Up" an early Styx song pre Tommy Shaw!!
Styx came to my home town in 1975 months before Tommy Shaw joined the band. Thanks for this song!
Similar riff as Steve Miller Bands "Wintertime". but Styx is one of those bands who were deceptively "Pop", but when it came time to deliver the goods, could crunch out some hard rock vibes with the very best.
SNOWBLIND, QUEEN OF SPADES, NOTHING EVER GOES AS PLANNED.
Another great Styx tune!
Ya, this is Styx "political"/patriotic tune. I've seen them live 3 or 4 times with all the original members.
Yes, this song is about America the "Red, White, and Blue" and written just before the Bicentenial. "Once long ago, a word from your lips and the world turned around", "Your not a child anymore", "So lift up your heart, make a new start And lead us away from here" - as usual hopeful at the end.

The epic song is dedication for Bicentennial and suite madame blue is 🗽
