My favourite Styx song of all time. It is layered and beautiful. Everything about this song sends chills up your spine. It's a sure sign for me of a fantastic song.
I like the studio as well, but this live performance just takes the song to another level. Dennis' vocal acrobatics here outdo his studio vocal by far.
I got to see Styx before Dennis left. It was an amazing concert! Dennis is AMAZING! I hate that they couldn’t agree on the direction the band was going. Styx w/Dennis is one of my faves!! I miss this Styx so much!
It may seem like a song about a woman, but when the lyrics are analyzed it's a song about America. Excellent live version but studio version of Prelude 12 and Suite Madame Blue together make it a complete listening experience.
Any chance that the US is being called "madame blue" because of "Lady Liberty"? Of course, the Statue of Liberty is more on the turquoise side of color, but that wouldn´t sound very good.
@@onetruthmediacompany it was my own personal experience. From the title of the song and the opening lines, I couldn't tell. And I can assure you, lot of my friends thought the same as well. Only when the line "you conquered the world and more" came and after that the "America" chants confirmed that this was not about a woman who had lost interest in her lover.
I got to see these guys at the Buffalo Chip at the 75th anniversary Sturgis motorcycle rally. They put on a phenomenal show that I was just blessed to see. Keep the great rock reactions going guys!
Took my 4 sons to see this tour when it was here. I miss seeing Styx with Dennis DeYoung. He still sounds this good. Styx still tours. My grandson went a couple of summers ago when he was 3 and had a great time. I can't honestly say how many times I have seen this band but numerous over the years. I did get to see Dennis in the Broadway touring company of Jesus Christ Superstar. He played Pontius Pilate and was amazing in the role. The whole musical was amazing! It had Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson from the 70s movie in it and Irene Cara. It was a stellar cast! Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw are both incredible singers and songwriters. I suggest more Styx! Try Grand Illusion from this same tour.
Styx had such a unique sound...the great vocals between Dennis and Tommy...great musicianship as well..Lots of memories of my teen years...Crystal Ball, Madam Blue, Come Sail Away, Renegade...lots of great songs
Pieces of Eight is one of my fav songs and the title track off the Album. Not as popular as some of their other albums. But in the late 70s, it rocked.
Dennis is the first reason why i fell for this band 👌 This patriot song give me chills each time.. i'm not from the USA but i understand the feeling of living in the north american. One of the best guitar riff of all Time in the "America part" 🤟 tx from Québec Canada 🇨🇦
Well, now. I've loved this song for many decades, but have somehow managed to avoid ever hearing this recording and seeing this video. Whoa! Thank you for reacting to this.
Dennis de Young was a hell of a singer for sure. Styx is, like Queen, one of the bands I played most on my acoustic in my younger days (damn, I'm old). Still love all my old heroes...
One of my all-time favorite musical pieces. And if you like these massive Epic songs that take you on a journey and change pace and tone and create imagery then you might also like to watch :::: The Wind that shapes The Land by unleash the archers, from a couple years ago. That song has that classic rock vibe from a similar era as this bringing images of Styx, Journey, Loverboy and even Aldo Nova and Starship. Epic and over 8 minutes long with a good lyrics and Melody
I have been to more Styx concerts than any other band (and at least one Dennis DeYoung concert). They never seem to quit touring and it is always a great show! I will be attending another Styx concert in about a month. Great musicians. The drummer is a monster player. Three lead singers. Styx is the first group to be awarded four consecutive Multi-Platinum albums with three of those ranking better than Double Platinum. 8 top 10 songs. 16 top 40 songs. People sometimes forget how huge they were. They are currently on the road with their frequent touring partner REO Speedwagon. Loverboy is opening the shows. Styx occasionally releases new music, but it is hard for an older band to get attention for a new album. Their ticket sales always seem to be good and I believe that is due to their strong catalog and consistently great shows. Please react to more live Styx!
@@NoSmokingDogs Saw Styx a few days ago. Fifth row center orchestra. Great show! It was even better than the last couple times I saw them. They did not play this one or Miss America, but making a play list has to be hard with their large catalog. The crowd was really into the show, so the energy kept surging between the band and the crowd.
I got lucky more than once in the backseat of my car in the 70s listening to Dennis deyoung and styx! This is off the equinox album. One of my favorites!
Spectacular! High level vocals and precision on every instrument with awesome drums keeping the rhythm and timing. It's like an orchestra but with only 5 musicians at the top of their profession. Styx the first band to ever have 4 consecutive triple platinum albums. Totally on another level.
One of my Styx faves! The requestor was right! BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL! Daaaaaaang! Dennis and Tommy have beautiful voices and it's the vibrato. Very, very special and talented. A vocal and musical masterpiece!
Nice reaction video! This song came out before the bicentennial celebration for America, a reflection on where we seemed to be headed after 200 years of statehood. Dennis was a little jaded about the commercialization and materialization of society, which I can understand having grown up in that period. The Statue of Liberty is Madame Blue if you hadn't guessed.
"You conquered the world... and more.... heaven's door". They are talking about the Apollo Moon missions, if you guys didn´t catch it. Remember, this was done during Vietnan.
Dennis DeYoung is remarkable and unique, I love his voice, but I'd be lying if I told you I didn't like Tommy Shaw's leads even better. I don't know, maybe because it is less polished but just as passionate, or maybe because he wrote most of what he leads, and I just like his writing. "Fooling Yourself" is an example. I think it may be the writing, because Dennis takes the solo in "Renegade" as requested by Tommy who wrote the song, and it is one of my favorites.
The “Pieces of Eight” album was in my opinion their best album. Lots of great songs but my favorite is “I’m Ok”. Recorded in an actual cathedral using the real pipe organ. The old days of the Kenwood stereo there was so much revereb it knocked stuff off the walls. Crazy wonderful. And great lyrics applicable for today. Blue Collar Man Great White Hope Renegade I’m Ok The final song Pieces of Eight is never played enough.
In the "Caught in the Act" live album Dennis holds the last "Moooooooore" 47 seconds.😲 You just heard it. 😎 This was written in 1976 for the Bi-Centennial.
To this day, a great live band. I haven't heard their latest album, but The Mission (2017) is awesome. I'm also a Dennis DeYoung fan and saw his solo show and he was fantastic. It's too bad they all probably will never get back together, but I choose to enjoy both while they are still active in music...
Styx sings a LOT about the illusion that is weatlh in the US, the illusion that everybody is happy, the illusion that the American Dream is something to strive for.
Amazing eh! Yeah Styx with Denis De Young rocked. Is there a better voice? Arguably no. Tommy Shaw’s vocals compliment the song so well. Fabulous band. Of all the known bands Styx is up there as one of the most underrated. Fans love them and rightly so as there is so much to love. Here in Australia I never got to see that lineup live. Rock on worthy ones. 😎
Watch vh1’s behind the music. Dennis wanted broadway and Tommy wanted a rock band. Mr Roboto made him quit. From interviews I’ve watched and read. Love the band , even have a strat autographed by the band.
Sad part is Andy doesn’t realize had Dennis DeYoung not party with the band he would’ve gotten his wish of having Styx music on Broadway. Because the current trend now is for bands like The Go-Go’s, Alanis Morissette, Pat Benatar to turn their music into Broadway shows. However back in the day he couldn’t go on due to his medical situation and he didn’t want him to go with a substitute until he was ready to return. He then sued the band and lost. That’s why he can only say he is Dennis Young performing the music of Styx. I love their music I love them then I love them now. And no I don’t ever see a reunion with Dennis in the future and JY Young has said that it would never happen.
Broadway? like green day and queen and U2 sprinsteen, the who grow up. Deyoung wanted to create a band that utilized theatrical elements like on the paradise theater show and many others of their concerts. he was a rock singer who could sing many diferent styles. they replaced him while he was sick some friends.
Sad thing is that Dennis despite his talent was a part of his own demise. Watch the Dan Rather interview with JY and Tommy. As fans we don’t know and may never know all of the story. If you’ve been in a serious band you know that there are many internal strides that go on ( ask Travis and Suzi Q if this isn’t right). STYX carried on and have done well. Dennis has carried on also. We could debate this for years. However what’s the point honestly? You either are a STYX fan or not. Shit LOVE Chuck Panozzo, but you got to give major props to Ricky Phillips. When push comes to shove I’m a STYX fan through and through!!
his demise was because he go sick when jy and shaw wanted to tour, they working on BNW together when this all happened. Dan Rather? why didnt they speak with deyoung? it was one sided. and you know nothing.
@@pepperdog2039 many male Broadway singers sound like that. Shit you probably didn’t know Dee Snider of Twister sister studied at Juilliard! He also played Jesus in Godspell Tim Curry did the musical Rocky Horror picture show
deyoung wrote this song in 1975 after the tragic end to viet nam the nixon ressignation , and the arab oil emabrgo. it was in honor of the bi centennial celibration the song is a metaphor of once beautiful woman who has grown old and refused to acknowledge it. the singer is asking her to lift up her heart and t make a new start and lead them all way from here. it is certainly not bashing. so fear not james.
Every one of these guys is a first class vocalist. The talent on that stage is astonishing.
Styx was blessed with TWO of the best lead singers in rock.
My favourite Styx song of all time. It is layered and beautiful. Everything about this song sends chills up your spine. It's a sure sign for me of a fantastic song.

It may seem like a song about a woman, but when the lyrics are analyzed it's a song about America. Excellent live version but studio version of Prelude 12 and Suite Madame Blue together make it a complete listening experience.
Agreed, Madame Blue was the US, and the song was asking the US to grow up and be responsible.
Up until a year ago I thought it was about a woman I knew and lost who dyed her hair at times.... 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Loved her she gone,....🤣
Any chance that the US is being called "madame blue" because of "Lady Liberty"? Of course, the Statue of Liberty is more on the turquoise side of color, but that wouldn´t sound very good.
You thought you needed to "educate" people ? Its obvious to everyone its in the lyrics!

I believe this was the incredible Todd Sucherman on drums at this stage since the original drummer passed away. What an amazing performance.
