The song was written about the Bicentennial (1976) and it reflects on the role "America" played in world events and the downfall (at that time) of the country due to Viet Nam, Watergate, gas shortages, inflation etc. and that our best may be behind us. Much like it is today, unfortunately.
THIS is one of their greatest attributes. They can do the song differently or EXACTLY like the studio...They are totally genuine when you see them live and they ALWAYS sound great
Great song by this band. I prefer the studio version even though they are good live. They had so many great songs such as "Lorelei", "Lady", "Renegade", "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)", "Babe", "The Best Of Times", "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Show Me The Way", "Don't Let It End", "Why Me", "Borrowed Time", "Rockin' The Paradise", "Mr. Roboto" (yes I like that one too) etc.
STYX is a trippy band. Every member super talented. With 3 primary songwriters that supported each other’s ideas which to a band that just sounds like STYX. Great reaction! This was from the Return to Paradise tour. I saw them twice on this tour and can honestly say (for a Styx fan) this was one of the best concerts I ever attended (and I have seen quite a few of the greats in concert). There was just so much pent-up demand for Styx to reunite at this time. The energy was on another level.
But Dennis wrote most of their best charting hits. Plenty doesn't equal most. So no, not wrong. Why do people have to be divided over DeYoung , Shaw and Young just because they had a fallout? Why does everyone have to pick sides? Especially people who know nothing of them personally. @@ruthylopez
Nicest guys right there on state. Had the pleasure of taking care of them at a hotel I worked at back in 92. Hung out with them in the bar after their concert. Saw them again for this tour. One of my favorite bands of all time.
Back when songs were written to leave the audience bleeding. The best part of this song is the theme behind it. “Lift up your heart…make a new start…lead us away from here”
Thank you for playing Styx a great song would be or Renegade or 🎉🎉Blue collar Man or Crystal ball ,love your show love you guys you're the best!!! Keep Rocking ❤v
Wow, I haven't heard this in about 3 decades 😂 Fabulous old song.❤❤ You should check out the studio version it sounds so much more full and freaking amazing. No joke.😊
Styx has always been one of my top 5 favorite groups of all time. And yet even I had forgotten how F***ING great they were in concert back when Dennis was still in the band. GOD D***!!!!!
I seen them 3 times during the 1970's in 1concert at the Baltimore Civic Center. Every live show was like playing one of there albums. You mentioned clarity "ABSOLUTELY!"
Styx is still on the road (a Vegas residency soon) and still sound and play wonderfully. This is the original lineup. Laurence Gowen has been the lead singer for years and is a great front man. Sadly the original drummer has passed away but Todd Sucherman has been the drummer for many years and is considered one of the best drummers in the world. If you find Styx playing near you....RUN....you won't be disappointed !
Also, Dennis performs, though he has scaled back. I saw Dennis in 2014, and he sounded great. His band was great. My favorite moment was when he asked the lady singing backup to come down in front ... it was his wife of 40 some years. Dennis sang Babe to her, and they danced through a section. Like someone else mentioned, Styx members sang positive songs for the most part. I read that Tommy has been married 30 some years. Anyhow, despite the issues that ensued with the band, it's worth seeing Dennis provided he still performs.
it's not really styx any more imho. there's only one member of the original group any more. not even tommy shaw, who is now the principal member, is an original member. it's great that they are keeping the music of styx alive, but they are not the same group that i saw on the grand illusion tour.
Okay just for clarification, Styx has many singers, the main singers are of course Dennis DeYoung but Tommy Shaw playing the double neck guitar is equally recognized as a lead singer. James Young has some songs (Miss America) he's lead on as well. I went to see Styx many times in the early days before the breakup and also saw this reunion tour. They are one of the few bands that can replicate almost exactly a song in concert and almost indistinguishable from the studio version. You have to be there to understand how those synths rumble the ground and your whole body.
I love seeing people react to Styx!! The drummer here, Todd Sucherman and my husband are really good friends. Todd actually just last week played on a couple of my husbands new tracks. “Renegade” is another big hit of theirs but with a little more kick😆 Been loving your reactions!!…came back to check out any of yourTom videos I may have missed (Chrome🔥) and was thrilled to see you’d done Styx and now Larry Bird too😄👏 😎🙏💜✌️
I was fortunate enough to have seen Styx with their original members before they lost John Panozzo and Dennis DeYoung. I did see this tour and it was a really great show! Also went to their Kilroy show.
Styx were big in the 70's and 80's. Thought you'd like this one. Dennis DeYoung wrote this in 1975 as America was gearing up for its bicentennial celebration in 1976. The song is not a celebration of the event, but a look at how it was being exploited. He explained in Classic Rock Revisited: "The 200th anniversary of America was being totally taken over by commercialization in a rather unceremonious fashion. I had a moment of reflection. I had grown up in the so-called glory days of the United States of America, which was post World War II until 1970. To live in this country at that time was really the golden age. The fallibility of the United States was something that struck me and that set the tone for 'Suite Madam Blue.' Maybe I was fearful of being literal - I think I probably was." The number of great songs by Styx is long. More songs I'd recommend - Renegade, Babe, The Best of Times, Lady, Blue Collar Man, Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, Miss America, Queen of Spades, Castle Walls, Fooling Yourself
Great band. I met Dennis once. He was very friendly and appreciative. I did a 100 mile bike ride for charity and he was the musical guest at at the after party.
love styx. i think this from their music dvd paradise something i can't remeber the actual title. i have a video of when my daughter was 3/4 at the time dancing to styx that was back in 2007/2008
Styx had 3 lead singers/songwriters resulting in a variety of songs and styles. Since you've done two Dennis DeYoung songs, you should do a Tommy Shaw one next. I suggested some songs in the comments of your "Come Sail Away" reaction including "Blue Collar Man", "Man In The Wilderness", "Fooling Yourself", and "Crystal Ball" - any of those would be fine.
The last concert I went to was REO & Styx @ Kings Dominion 1996. So many GREAT memories, so long ago! Keep up your ride down the Styx rabbit hole, you have only just begun the wonderful trip. Thanks for the memories!
I love your reactions, just subscribed. Styx was a great band for sure! And that was one of their many great songs. I have a suggestion for you from another band that I'm certain you'll love. The Band is Toto. The song is Africa. The video with 53M views posted by Gunter Bauer Spielbach. This is a live performance done decades after their original was released. It's absolutely amazing! I think you will love it!
😊❤ 😮 I couldn't wait for this answer! The first long note (the word 'more') was by my counter 23 seconds long!! I loved how you looked at each other and how you both were more and more surprised!! Awesome! 😅 Luv you guys!! 😊❤❤
Enjoyed your reaction. I was a big fan of Styx in high school and this was one of my favorites. Loved Dennis's work but also loved the songs that Tommy Shaw penned and sang. As time went on there was growing tension between Dennis and the band. Dennis is a big fan of Broadway musicals and his voice is so perfect for that genre (as shown by his musical theater work later in his career). You can see more of that theatrical style creeping into their music, especially their latter albums Paradise Theater and Kilroy Was Here. Eventually they permanently split and after a lawsuit, the other band members go the rights to the name Styx and Dennis could use it as a descriptive term in any of his solo endeavors (like Dennis DeYoung and the music of Styx).
Dennis fancied himself a "Broadway" style singer. Amazing vocal range, and phenomenal songwriter. Jimmy Young (JY) and Tommy Shaw did more of the "rocker" types of songs.
@@Vaelsung1 Not really... Because Dennis HIMSELF said "Broadway was a goal for him." He actually recorded an album of Broadway hits in 2010. It wasn't intended as a slam... Just an observation.
A "suite" in a song is where it takes you to "different rooms" in the house. Definitely wish you did the studio, but still a great performance. Gotta do original studio version of Lady.
I LOVE JY's guitar playing, but I'd HARDLY call him a lead singer. He sang maybe 2-3 songs. Tommy and Dennis were clearly the 2 lead singers (nothing against JY)
Great song. I have been to Old Montreal twice. The first time was with my departed wife on our honeymoon and ate at an incredible French restaurant. We walked along artists alley and I believe also Jacque Cartier place. What a wonderful place. Try reacting to the long version of Come Sail Away if you have not done it yet. It is one of a couple of signature tunes.I believe that Dennis left in 1999.He has performed in Broadway Shows!I saw Dennis perform live on a solo tour at an outdoor park town for free in my town on Long Island, NY.Another great song with Tommy Shaw leading the way is called Fooling Yourself. He does a fantastic job performing it live to this day!
Hello 🤗👋. This is more of why I tolerated STYX. This song is one of their few that really highlights the diversity of the band. My favorites by this group will always be Too Much Time On My Hands and Renegade - both written and sung by Tommy. I'm a drummer by trade. I'm not a songwriter. Neither are most drummers. It's definitely difficult to sing and drum at the same time. I don't know how guitar players do it. More power to 'em
Yes, Styx is great live, and I'll be again in Vegas for their number of concerts late Jan. early Feb. A few corrections and history: Dennis had some health problems, and the band decided to go on tour without him including the shows I saw at StyxJam '99 in Vegas. Legal crap ensued and since then Dennis was out. He's done some solo stuff since. After 1996's "Return To Paradise" reunion tour, Styx toured in 1997's "40th Anniversary of The Grand Illusion". In 1998 Dennis did his play "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", and members of Styx attended the same performance that I did. Tommy Shaw also released his "7 Deadly Zens" solo album in 1998 along with a few performances to support it (sing-alongs at Borders and opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd). There was a brief period in 1980 where Dennis was out of the band(no albums or tours), and then back in before their "Paradise Theater" album. Tommy Shaw left the band after 1983's "Kilroy Was Here" tour. After solo stuff by each, Dennis reformed Styx for 1991's "Edge Of The Century" album and tour without Tommy who was then in Damn Yankees. In 1995, they got together to re-record "Lady" for release on an A&M greatest hits album at Dennis' home studio, and that led to the 1996 reunion. BTW, check out Damn Yankees song "Come Again". Damn Yankees were Tommy Shaw(Styx), Jack Blades(Night Ranger), Ted Nugent, and Michael Cartellone(now of Lynyrd Skynyrd); and released 2 albums in the early 90's.
Dennis De Young left Styx in 1999. He was replaced by Lawrence Gowan on keyboards and have included some of his songs in their repertoire. Songs like "Criminal Mind" "Strange Animal" "Moonlight Desires" "Awake The Giant" just to name a few.
One of most insanely talented bands period tragedy they're not in so called Rock and Roll Hall of Fame its a insult they aren't in there but they'll put r and b hip hop rap artists in there.
Return to Paradise tour was a polished presentation of what I remembered as a teen seeing the Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight tours, different times, but oh so good! 💖 3 leads, although JY was lesser, Tommy put out some bangers, too. It's crazy to have fangirled over this group only to have them show up in your small hometown!! 🤭😯😂
I saw them early in the bands existence at ECC- Elgin Community College which is outside of Chicago. I believe it was 1973 or 74 and they were on a small stage with audience standing or sitting on the tile floor. It was like the commons area or something not an auditorium. Another local band named Heartsfiled also played that night.
I've seen Heartsfield many times live in small clubs over the years. Great country rock band. They never hit it real big, but their first 3-4 albums are gems.
One of the few Chuck comes forward to sing back up. A suite, in Western classical music and jazz, is an ordered set of instrumental or orchestral/concert band pieces. It originated in the late 14th century as a pairing of dance tunes and grew in scope to comprise up to five dances, sometimes with a prelude
This might be Styx at their best. Thoughtful lyrics, great musicianship, and top tier vocals. I have always loved this song. And It is about the United States. It was written in the mid 70s... leading out of the debacle in Vietnam and the wavering confidence in the leadership role that the United States played in the world post WW II had played. The political unrest, the scandals, the struggling economy... I know because I grew up in that era. This was Deyoung's call to right the ship and lead us away from that period. I used to be able to cover this song. Once upon a time...
Hey Phil & Sam, happy Friday! Another excellent choice, and viewer suggestion. I would offer up Miss America, a banger on the Grand Illusion album, which also has Come Sail Away and Fooling Yourself(The Angry Young Man). And for goodness sake, please check out the amazing Canadian Frank Marino. It's Begun to Rain or Something's Comin Our Way Live At Agora Theater, or perhaps Loved by You or Ain't Dead Yet. Thanks and have a great weekend! ✌️☮️🇺🇸❤️🎵
FYI Styx is still touring constantly. Dennis DeYoung was replaced by Lawrence Gowan (never looked back) and still has Tommy Shaw and James JY Young. They totally kick ass!
You guys really should react to Molly Hatchet ' Flirtin with Disaster'! Southern Rock at its finest with some of the finest guitars you will ever hear! Thanks!

Hi ! Who s back story in Old Montreal ? Marc ? Anyway, yes Old Montreal is great ! My first job ever was in Old Montreal. I was a car Jockey ! 😎In 1972 and i was also tripping there at night with friends in bars along Place Jacques-Cartier ! Back in those years there wasn t any restaurants with terasses like today ! very touristic indeed ! Styx is always one of my fav band while trucking in the Rockies in Alberta and BC. all night from Edmonton AB. till i get to my destination in Prince Georges BC. I was a highway trucker for 35 years, so i had lots of time to listen to music ! I wish i would ve seen Styx in concert ! Saw many bands but not them ! So it s always interesting to watch a live show on video ! thanks !🤠
Their best song by far, very powerful! Please check out: Crystal Ball, Man In The Wilderness, Queen Of Spades Fooling Yourself, Renegade, etc.. Styx is easily in my top 5 favorite bands: 1. Kansas, 2. Boston, 3. Styx, 4. Toto, 5. Journey! Please react to these groups as well! Thank you!

Dennis De Young left Styx in 1999. He was replaced by Lawrence Gowan on keyboards and have included some of his songs in their repertoire. Songs like "Criminal Mind" "Strange Animal" "Moonlight Desires" "Awake The Giant" just to name a few.
24 seconds. Dennis has some pipes!
One of most insanely talented bands period tragedy they're not in so called Rock and Roll Hall of Fame its a insult they aren't in there but they'll put r and b hip hop rap artists in there.
I saw them in 1977 Pieces of Eight Tour
Styx was the first concert I ever went to. The Grand Illusion tour.
Return to Paradise tour was a polished presentation of what I remembered as a teen seeing the Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight tours, different times, but oh so good! 💖
3 leads, although JY was lesser, Tommy put out some bangers, too.
It's crazy to have fangirled over this group only to have them show up in your small hometown!! 🤭😯😂
"Miss America" is another amazing tune with an America theme.
Fantastic
This is their Stairway To Heaven from an incredible album, Equinox!
This song is so cool. 😎
EPIC
(FABULOUS) I miss Dennis with STYX.
Forever great❤
It's a shame no radio station s played this awesome song. Crystal Ball is another early great tune
John Panozzo was a great drummer. Lady is short but I love the drums. Dennis is one of the best composers. Great artist.
Thanks!
F l i r t i n With Disaster yeah
Tommy Shaw with the double-neck guitar is a great vocalist too you should hear some of his songs
My late wife and I saw them on our honeymoon,❤
♫♫"...I can see Charlie on the porch/Johnny clicking his sticks/and two boys i don't even know/rehearsing the electric string tricks/yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah..."♫♫
So it s always interesting to watch a live show on video ! thanks !🤠
I saw sticks in Atlanta on the edge of the universe tour
Their best song by far, very powerful! Please check out: Crystal Ball, Man In The Wilderness, Queen Of Spades Fooling Yourself, Renegade, etc.. Styx is easily in my top 5 favorite bands: 1. Kansas, 2. Boston, 3. Styx, 4. Toto, 5. Journey! Please react to these groups as well! Thank you!
