This one goes out to our friend M K! Thanks for suggesting this one M K! Leave us some suggestions for future videos everyone! Hope everyone is staying safe and doing well! 👍💪💛🤟
Give a listen to, Too much time on my hands.
I love early Styx. For it to be 'Legit' Styx though, Dennis DeYoung HAS to be the vocalist. Have a great day guys
Hey Man! Glad to do a song that was suggested from one of our biggest viewers! And yeah haha the ALL button is important! And yessss! Rush is definitely and awesome band! Stay safe! -S
@@fatherandsonreactions Thanks. Just to be clear my top groups have changed since the late 70's . Here's what my list looks like now:
1 Zeppelin
2 Pink Floyd
3 RUSH
4 Stones
5 Neil Young
6 Eagles
7 Metallica
8 Gordon Lightfoot
9 The Who
10 Triumph
That reminds - another suggestion is World of Fantasy by Triumph
Such a timeless song, those late nights sitting by the radio just jamming to this type of music. Oh how I miss those days, thanks for this guys. Hola MK,!, Much love&respect to all,!,
This is Styx's "Stairway to Heaven"... My personal favorite.
Except it’s not STOLEN
Suite Madame Blue and Castle Walls are my fav for many decades now ;-)
Agree with both statements.
@@larryrs Mine too !!!
If you really listen to the lyrics you'll find he's actually singing about America. And how she must change and move forward. Particularly poignant in these troubled times. Great song!!
"Red white and blue, gaze in your looking glass, you're not a child anymore"
"... So lift up your heart and make a new start and lead us away from here"
It is all about America and comparing it to a woman who's grown older and sees the lines and aging. Then of course the late chorus where they're singing "America." Dennis Deyoung who wrote and sang it said this is what it was about.
i saw them 4 times ..just an incredible show every time...
This is my all time favorite styx song. It is actually a demo that made it on the album. Dennis deyoung just put out a new album....check out a kingdom ablaze....keep in mind he is 73 now
Scott Richter A Kingdom Ablaze is a great song. My favorite off DeYoung’s newest album.
This song makes sense for today especially now.
Equinox,a fantastic album with a great cover as well.I have seen Styx live three times, the original lineup and they were amazing.I love Dennis DeYoung's voice. This song is one of their best and highlights all their talents as musicians.
My opinion this is their finest work. Dennis De Youngs voice is amazing.
I AGREE !
I agree. I think this is JY’s best guitar work, as well.
Styx was my first ever concert. We were the first audience to hear the then unreleased song "Lady" which was a huge hit. I recommend the songs "Young man" , "Serpent is rising", "Miss America" and "Plexiglass toilet". Deyoung's vocals are exceptional...aided by the excellent harmonies. From my home...Chicago area.
they were my first concert as well. My favourite from that concert was Light Up. They did an encore which included Rock n Roll from Zep. Saw them again a few years later and they were even better.
The Wow factor is when you realize he is talking about America as represented by the Statue of Liberty. Clever wording in the lyrics and deep messaging. I love Styx and this song, while not even close to my favorite song, has a place in their memorable songs.
This song by Styx goes beyond ordinary for some of us growing up at the time. For me, the music was a spiritual experience that guided my soul and helped me navigate the challenges, uncertainties, and opacities of self, identity, relationships, society, and the world during those crucial years of early youth in high school.
This Is My Favorite Styx Song
When listening to this the first time the wow factor was the amazing guitar solo kicking in.
For me, the 'wow factor' was the amazingly clear note right in the middle of the solo that, when I was a kid listening to it, seemed to hang on forever before the drums dropped back in and set the tone for the remainder of the song. Even though it was some 20+ years ago for me, I still remember it with perfect clarity as the first time I actually understood what it meant to make an instrument sing.
I get the impression that maybe Son appreciates *complexity* in music a bit more than Dad does, which may be why he was more "wowed" by this one. This is one of those tracks where you have to do a bit of peeling back the onion layers to really "get" it; if you go into it expecting one of their straightforward bangers like "Renegade", or a power ballad like "The Best of Times", it won't quite click for you.
This song shows the magic of Dennis DeYoung's voice.
Some great stuff there; Styx has a deep catalog of awesomeness. Styx albums take you on a journey, and even though they may not necessarily be "concept" albums, they tell a story and just work well when you can lean back and soak in the whole thing.
Nice reaction as always, great song choice, a real rockin' Styx classic. I'm glad I 'gazed through my looking glass' at your channel today and found this gem. 😆🤘
The best version of this song is the live version. Dennis DeYoung holds that note...amazing!
I'm so glad you guys did this one - my All Time favorite Styx song
As a musician I always hated when people would come up to me at the beginning of the night and say "I heard you were awesome I can't wait to see the show!" For the same reasons. When someone has heard your band is top level and come to see you it puts a lot of pressure on you. You feel you cannot make a single mistake. It robs you and the fan of the experience of coming in and not knowing a thing about the band and giving you the chance to "Wow" them. Especially if they are already expecting to be Wowed. Completely understand where you are coming from. You should go see STYX live if you have the chance I won't say more so I don't become guilty of the same thing I was complaining about. I saw them live last summer.
You aged me with this one, son. Has been a very long time since I heard this one, thank you for giving it back to me. You too, M K! I would like to ask for 2cellos "Thunderstruck" official video (AC/DC cover) I swear you will be blown away by this one. Thanks you two! Stay safe & stay strong.
Hey Kathy i’m so glad we could hopefully bring back memories! And sadly, there are many bands we can’t react to on youtube because of copyright issues (Including AC/DC.) We wish we could. We hope you are staying safe and doing well! -S
Grand Illusion, blue collar man are great styx songs.
Seen them do it live in 76 . This was great live. It was written for the country’s Bi Centennial.
Son, work on Dad, he’ll come around, don’t always love a song initially, give this one another chance, it’ll grow on you. Give Crystal Ball or Queen of Spades.
Yes - I highly endorse Crystal Ball, and Castle Walls !
" I'm OK" is a personal fav. of mine and it doesn't get much love
Whata voice...this song is a masterpiece...great reaction !
Thank you!
Blue Collar Man and Lady are good to.
My first concert ever. They only had one album at the time.."Serpent is rising". Check out "young man" "lady" "miss America" "Grove of Eglatine"
YOU GUYS ARE SO CLOSE TO 4K WE NEED TO SHARE THIS VIDEO!
To me, I think at the end all the band members played what they felt was America in their hearts. Rock on guys.
I had many styx albums and this is my favorite.......... Really the whole album is fantastic..........
That is so crazy guys that song has been stuck in my head for like the last week and here you are doing a review on it that's just nuts LOL
Haha LoL! crazy coincidence! How have you been? Hope you’ve been staying safe! -S
That could be, you know that subconscious stuff
M K could be! haha! -S
@@cliffmitchell3826 In that case let me plant this one in your head - Castle Walls !
Wow, dad, what are you talking about? This song is an absolute banger. Freaking masterpiece!
Com’n dad... this song is so rocking and underrated. You may need to listen to it more to fully appreciate it.
Yeah we’ve actually both listened to it many times after the reaction and we both really like it. -S
This song was great during the head music days. Totally different when you are smoking pot which most people were doing back then.
y'all don't know Styx yet....so much to hear
Try Blue Collar Man, Man in the Wilderness, Castle Walls
Great song Styx one of the greatest band of all time
I love this song but I really appreciate honest reactions. Thanks and stay 100% honest.
I gotta tell you, this is Styx best song and a classic. It has everything you could want in a song and is kind of an early version of a power ballad. The only song they do that approaches this is Queen of Spades.
Dennis DeYoung wrote this song for the Bi-Centennial celebration 1976. He thought America was bad then.......
Actually first time hearing Styx.
Congrats to 4K subs!
Thanks Master! We are so close! -S
@@fatherandsonreactions No worries! Couple hours and it will be down.
Hopefully! 🔥🔥😁😁 -S
First time watching this channel. I will have to watch more but seems the younger one is more open minded.
Outstanding choice! Equinox is a great album. "Lorilei" is another great song off this. A must listen.
The old man needs to change the shirt from "Hurley" to "Surly". C'mon man.
Very poignant social commentary type lyrics with an awesome rock back drop...a fave of mine. Other Styx faves: Lady, Crystal Ball, Man In The Wilderness, Grand Illusion, Renegade, Miss America, Pieces of Eight, Snowblind, Mr. Roboto
Man of Miracles, Mr. Roboto, Great White Hope, Grand Illusion, Miss America, Rockin' the Paradise, Heavy Metal Poisoning, Double Life, Love is the Ritual, Edge of the Century, Homewrecker are just a few of the songs from Styx that are great.
I came here after I saw a recent acoustic version by Dennis TheYoung. And Isle of the Misanthrope. The guy is in his 70's and he still sounds like he did in 1975.
I wasted my life. I never thought he was this good
You need to listen to Styx Miss America
Oh, yes!! I love this song! Such a deep meaning, too. Really a rebuke of America and some of her behavior...
Styx... man, absolutely quality band! _Mr. Roboto_ is such a great song. 👍
Dad... I'm kinda surprised by some of your reactions lately. It seems like Son is more open to actually trying new music, whereas you have your favorites and aren't as open to new stuff. But perhaps that is just my impression; I could be totally wrong. And, anyway, how many of your favorite songs were your favorites the first time you heard them?
Definitely haha. He will try to be more open. Also we’ve had many songs we loved the first time we heard them! Great Question! The Pot, Beyond the Realms of death, Were an american band, inside looking out, and many more!
@@fatherandsonreactions Like I said, I could be wrong. And, I am his age, so I get being comfy with what you know. But, one of the many benefits of having children is that, because they are so open to new experiences, their enthusiasm can help rekindle that openness within ourselves... if we let it. I'm not criticizing your dad... not at all. Just reminding him of the same thing I have to remind myself, and that is to always keep an open mind and heart. 💜
Listen to Dennis DeYoung’s (the lead singer on this version) solo version done in the last 10 years. It’s amazing!!
LOVE THIS SONG....YOUNG MAN YOU ARE RIGHT...DAD IS WAY OFF!!!
Song was about the commercialization of the Bicentennial back in 1976. And now( 200 years later) how America has lost its innocence. IMO this is Styx's greatest work from its greatest album ever (Equinox). You should listen to the prelude first ( Prelude 12) as it leads perfectly into Suite Madame Blue. The Grand Illusion & Pieces of Eight both fall slightly behind the masterpiece that is Equinox. Dads gotta listen to this again after listening to the prelude. This song is ABSOLUTE perfection. Enjoyed the review.
Thanks for the information. My father has heard me put the song on many times since we’ve done this song and he’s actually liking it! -S
Tell me....how many bands nowadays would write a song not only about the Statue of Liberty, but about America in general? Very few. God bless STYX. God bless America. And god bless you guys for reacting to this timeless classic. And yes I’m still going to bug you for that “Shipwrecked” reaction by Alestorm.
I will second that request
Their best song imo...fun song to play...basically revolves around a b minor chord
Just my opinion, but dad should let son get out his full, honest, sincere reaction first before injecting his opinion. I think son really loved the song and thought it was great (which is really fun to see at his young age). Once dad chimed in though, I think he clouded and muted his son's response because of dads influence. Again, that was just my initial reaction to you guys when the song ended. I'm more interested in the young man's reaction to this classic as he's the new generation - and we NEED the new generation to appreciate musical awesomeness and save rock and roll.
Come on dad!!!! This song is EPIC!
Ha! 'tis true that the 'wow' factor isn't always apparent in the first hearing of a piece of music. So Father, just relax with Son and mellow out, maybe you feel under pressure to perform, ha! You have no worries my friend, whatever your impression is, we still have some common ground in music.
I'm glad to see dad reacted positively with son's good point of not expecting achieving a wow factor with every song. I thought review songs, instead of rating them. I understand how you must have countless songs to review. I would love to see a review of "Captain Howdy " or "You're Gonna Burn in Hell" 🔥 by Taisted Sister, hopefully long before 🎃 Halloween. THANKS FOR THE 12 months of watching a very funny & cool lad & his pop, by subscribing this time in 2021! LONG LIVE ROCK!!! 🎸 🤘 🤘 🎸
Sweet - I Saw Her Standing There
the who cover steve priest the bassist and founder of the original sweet is passed away yesterday this is his american version from sweet R.I.P Steve Priest ruclips.net/video/NBr4xXSMBpA/видео.html
Kansas was one of the groups that influenced Styx. Please react to Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel) by Kansas off of their Masque album. Thanks!
Don't forget about "Tell Me What You Want" by Zebra, you won't regret it.
Old fart here, 61 so I’ve heard Styx before but never this one and have to agree with dad, I wasn’t wowed with this one. It’s alright but not a wow, lol. First time watching you two and enjoyed the video and subscribing. Looking forward to more reactions from you both.
You listen to these lyrics and keep in mind this was written in 1974
Hugs from Brazil >>>
Madame Blue is the USA...the statue of liberty
Man, I love the calm melody in this track a ton. Atmospheric, melodic, and smooth. Reminds me a bit of Opeth when they go for more melodic, atmospheric, jazzy tunes during some of their metal songs. As for the other parts of the song, I enjoyed the anthem-y parts when the guitars sort of soar in the track. I also love the guy's vocals, very smooth and beautiful. I'd give this a 7/10, only because while I enjoyed it a lot, I don't think I'll keep coming back to it all the time. There's a bunch of music I'm into, that tend to incorporate different sounds that I'm more into.
Thanks for the share and reactions! And yeah, please don't set super high expectations for my Cynic track (still currently Humanoid, but yeah....I've changed my mind before because I'm so indecisive. lol). I don't expect you all to be "wow-ed" by it. They're different from other groups you've listened to, so I chose one that felt the most "sonically similar" to what you may be used to. I think there are better songs, but I find it enjoyable regardless, and I hope you do too. And if you want something more aggressive, complex, and unique after you listen to it, you know that one other song I keep mentioning. :P
I don't know what kind of music you guys consider to be "wow" music, that I could apply to my list. They're all different, so if there's any "wow" to be had, it's from something you guys haven't experienced yet on the channel. Except maybe Muse.... if there's anything to be wowed by Muse, it's their performances and energy, which I think you're familiar with that kind of "wow" before. haha And the suggestion I gave you is a great one.
Ah shoot. "if there's any "wow" to be had, it's from something you guys haven't experienced yet on the channel."
What I mean is, the kind of sound the bands have, that you haven't experienced yet (at least, I don't think). So, I don't know if you'd be wowed or not from any of them, since I don't have much of a baseline of your previous reactions to work with. haha
you should check out Castle Walls from The Grand Illusion album, great song !!
YES !!!! I STRONGLY SECOND THAT - AND THIRD, FOURTH AND FIFTH IT !!!!
I hope they are listening to the CD version, and not the streaming quality - lots of things in the music are lost or don't sound right in this streaming quality rendition.
Also, Styx is an album band. You need to listen to "Prelude 12" and this as a combo like you would "Foreplay/Long Time" by Boston.
This song has some metal in it and can rock hard like a lot of early Styx - see "The Serpent Is Rising", "Midnight Ride", or "Born For Adventure". These guys also did a reaction to "Castle Walls" which gets intense. A similar song by Tommy proceeds that one, "Man In The Wilderness", and was even better live.
"Queen of Spades" is another lesser-known song that rocks. If you go back further, "Best Thing", "A Day", and "Young Man" are ones to check out.
interesting they use a photo with Tommy Shaw in the video when he is not on the album.
I would say the live version is better than the album version but still 🤔 great song 👌 I 💕 love crystal Ball and Lorilee Both
Underworld - Underneath the Radar
From a guitarists point of view ... wow, what a guitar duet. The first half is so difficult you probably won't here many if any bands try to copy the dual picking,. Next time you hear this, listen to the duet, may add something. BTW, my friends and I in 1975, said WOW.
Just listen to the whole album called Pces of 8 it's by far there best work🤘
You need to listen to any song in Boston's first album.
Most underrated song on that album, Let me Take you Home Tonight.
Check out a Live version, you’ll love it.
How about "Ayreon - My House On Mars"
One of the most over looked and underrated progressive rock bands on the 1970s. Many music snobs turn thier noses up as they had a few commercially successful songs that were a bit pop. But they are an amazing band. May want to listen to Damn Yankees - a band Tommy Shaw joined for a while.
This is one of my favorites along with Renegade. Another great one is Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man). I listened to that song so many times. Also Miss America. Excellent song!
Great analysis - people who only listened to FM radio judged them based on Come Sail Away but this song and Castle Walls hardly ever got any airplay.
This song is my favorite Styx song...It is baffling to see dad's reactions, seemingly, over and over again...not liking a lot of music...Seems that dad is less open to music than son is. Mostly dad is disappointed in music. Negativity is a pattern in our thought process, your pattern seems pretty negative
We thought our innocence was lost then. Little did we know. The song was about the USA. The statue was in the video someone else's idea.
Can you also review REO Speedwagon "Golden Country"?? (pleaseeeee??) 😀💜
I like your honesty, great tune, but you guys should listen to Too Much Time on my Hands and Lady are great tunes. Some songs dont connect at once or emotionally at all. I am that way with Metalica. I would like to see more Priest, Goo Goo Dolls, I think both of you would love Iris.
Dad i hear what your saying but i think of the first time i heard my fav songs you knew it was good but at same time i knew i didnt like something it maybe took time to get used to it
They're coming here 09/26/2021 My third time!
Written for America for the bicentennial.
This is Styx responding to 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'Stairway to Heaven', both epic and long and multi-sectional and just juicy. I personally believe Styx nailed it, their version of a 7-8 minute mini-opera. Doesn't copy the others. Sounds like f'n Styx. Plus it came out in 1976 (America's 200th anniversary for you historical illiterates).
(edit) Yes, I am aware of 'Tommy' and pretty much every note of Pink Floyd, as well as Yes. Not claiming Styx (or Zep or Queen) invented the thing. Kansas followed suit a year or so later...see 'Wayward Son'... and 'Freebird' was contemporary to this.
The thing with Styx is that their best songs are never their biggest hits. You always have to go deeper with them. Try the Wooden Nickel music.
Try "Miss America." Sick banger!
Equinox was the last Styx album with guitarist John Curulewski. Tommy Shaw had NOT joined them yet when this song was produced. Youve got a picture of Styx with Tommy and NOT John. How about putting up a pic of John to honor him and his role in Styx songs before Tommy ??
Yeah, I think the picture was from Pieces of Eight.
Bismarck by Sabaton.
This kid looks like a young Tom Cruise.
Please react to Lady by Styx
Great song! I love the guitar riff when the song gets heavy at around the 4:40 mark. It's so beefy...it almost sounds Metal! They had quite a few good to great song...check out Renegade (ruclips.net/video/ZXhuso4OTG4/видео.html). Dōmo arigatō! Cheers!
That gives the song the contrast your u need to make it an exceptional work.
Snowblind
This reaction is an example of why the channel should be called Not My Father and Son reactions. Not everyone is going to react to a song the same way, but father has had way more "say what" moments than son has.
Not loving this song is right up with comparing Garth Brooks to the Rolling Stones when the golden age of country music was over with way before Garth Brooks ever put out an album.
The #1 "say what" moment from Father was definitely when you did Nights in White Satin, and Father said he knew the song, buy you still did a radio edit version that left out the poem at the end. Father should have realized the poem was missing and reshot the video with the right version. Just funnin' guys. Nice improvements from your fisrt videos with no headphones and no visuals. Videos now are well done and comments have become more insightful as time has gone on.
With what is going on with the politics, I need it.I love it.
Yeah, I know what you're saying, dad. These are selected cuts by music lovers. They're supposed to be special. That's why we're trying to get you back to some Alice in Chains. You guys seemed to be moved by them, and said you wanted to return before too long, but haven't.
YES you have a great point. We totally forgot to get back to Alice In Chains !! Yes they totally did it for us as I remember. We will absolutely revisit them. Thank you for reminding us !! I just told my son that we gotta do them again soon !!! Thank you - F
@@fatherandsonreactions Looking forward to it. For my 2 cents on song suggestions: Rooster may be their biggest song, and I think it's a great one. But Rain When I Die may be their most complete. God Am is an underrated outstanding song of theirs that nobody reacts to. Hopefully we find one that blows you away this time too!
i love this song, but dont feel you have to also.. but then again, whats wrong with you? hehe
You haven't listened to it enough.
Styx never appealed to me. Not that they had bad songs but those lacked of something for me. Try Camel - The Snowgoose album or the Mirage album and you know what I mean. And I never liked the voice of the singer.
Styx best is Crystal Ball.
Young man your a wise little fella........ Your dad OMG I gave you a thumbs down because of your dad....... Pewwwww
