- We purchased this solar cover reel system from Amazon to help with our solar cover. Just a few DIY modifications here and there to make it a little better. A good buy for around $80 on Amazon. We also purchased an additional reel set without the pole for extra parts for $22.. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for putting this video on RUclips. The instructions in the box were awful and I learned all that I needed to know by watching this video. Thanks.
Thanks man, my kit did not come with good instruction. This video is exactly what I was looking for!
Thank you so much for showing this video. I was not understanding how to attach the solar blanket. Now I do!😄
Glad to help. Have a good one!
The directions for mine are one page with 5 pictures on it. I had so many questions. I searched and searched on RUclips until I finally found this video. Perfect. I have a 24ft, but otherwise the exact same system. I'm very nervous to get it installed correctly, but now at least I have complete directions.
Glad it was helpful!
Hey, I remember when you put your pool in. I haven't been on for a while but I remember your drone and the overhead view. you've done a great job.
Thanks, and welcome back. The pool project has been a good one. Glad we did it. Stay safe and healthy my friend.
I just bought that same reel setup. This answered some questions for me. Thanks
Glad I could help
I REALLY WISH I had seen your video before buying the exact same system from the pool store for over 250.00 😡 You are a complete pro at this. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and knowledge 🥰🥰🥰🥰 Gods many BIG & BEAUTIFUL BLESSINGS 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you!
All is great except for unrolling especially when you have a thicker plastic. My solution is tying a long strap on each side of the cover that you pull when you want to unroll. You just need to be two persons pulling at the same time. Now all is working just great
Thank you for this video! You also saved me with the gorilla tape trick! Thank you!
Great! Best of luck moving forward with your project!
I'm first.
Fantastic modification
Thanks
Hey great video.. I was wondering would it be possible to do a post on both side of the pool. Like in your post video but closer to the pool edges. Would the 3 feet straps long enough or does the cover have to have extra length?
Excellent accessory added to our list, and great review and detail shots. Pretty long screws going into the tube.
Thanks you kindly brother. Hope all is week in Montana! Yes, long screws!
Just a question if you don't mind.....how high can it tilt up to be moved? We have a deck post that may require it being lifted over to move around to rest spot thanks.
Your video was very informative and very well done. I have an in-ground kidney shaped pool and my thought was to put the roller at the end but you correctly displayed the advantage of rolling from the middle with an irregular (non-rectangular) cover. However my issue is the brackets. It's great that one can remove the rod with cover and put it aside but the reel remains on both sides and that is a tripping or cut hazard. What are your thoughts about some sort of flat-with-rounded-edges pedestals for the reels and then removing the reels and rod when the pool is in use. I want to figure a way to get everything out of the way; not just the cover but the reels too.
I was wondering if you had to remove the brackets off your pool when you installed your winter cover?
Where did you find the complete kit? The only thing amazon has is just the reel system. The poles are not included and I can't find poles for a 28' pool.
Same reel setup. Found this video as we’re having issues with the reel just spinning on the rod. Saw you used gorilla tape. I used some but ran out. There is a significant size difference between the hole on the reel and rod ends being so much smaller.
Yes, the gorilla tape is key to make it stop spinning. Thanks for watching and have fun with your pool this summer!
I saw this in a catalogue and was wondering how it worked.
Great video, I used this guide to install the same setup as stated before the instructions were lacking. Can you show a follow-up video of one person unrolling the cover? I find the rolling up process simple, however getting it back to flat a challenge.
Will do. The video is due for release later today!
@@GreenMountainDIYGuy Is there a link to this?
When you reel up the cover pull the edges taught so that it doesn't crumple when you roll it up. The bubbles can pop if you don't.
Mine is a feherguard and has an aluminum rod. Similar to this but without the large rings. I have a metal rod attached to my fence to put the handle in.
The bubbles won't pop. Thanks for watching.
@@GreenMountainDIYGuy it isn't as aesthetically pleasing to have a crumpled up blanket over your pool either. My pole is usually across the middle of the pool rolled up. So I have to look at it and any company that comes over sees it too.
Kind of like making the bed when you get up.
Ayuh 😊
Hey Green Mountain DIY Guy- great video, and I have a quick question. How is this for unrolling the cover back onto the pool? Is it easy for 1 person to do once the reel is across the pool? Just seems like the unrolling process the cover wouldn't really naturally want to extend out both ways maybe?
Thanks!
Same question?
Great question. Unrolling can be somewhat of an art form. There are good days and bad ones. With that said, I installed two pool noodles on each end of the cover. This helps keep cover from sinking with rolling it out. I should do a video on this when we get the pool going later this Spring. Thanks for watching.
@@GreenMountainDIYGuy thanks for the additional info!
Do have problems with your cover shifting? Getting ready to replace my cover and was wondering if I should have less strap length ie, make 2 extra holes? Thoughts?
Once in a while it will shift. You can roll up the straps (more taunt) to help prevent this in windy conditions. I just replaced the straps last summer. Good for a couple of years. Thanks for watching.
I wonder what kind of bubble plastic was used and how it works. It does seem like the type you buy for insulation in buildings or bubblewrap to protect things when you move. Some of these types are UV stabilised etc. So I wonder what type of cover you used and how it works out when it come sto deterioration. Thx!
It is much heavier and rated for UV. Thanks for watching!
The solar blankets usually only last two years here in Florida but you can use the warranty.
I'm wondering if the plastic bolts are long enough for a heavy cover like we have. When it's doubled over it's pretty thick.
Yes, never had one break in 3 years.
When you use this what is the temperature of the pool water?
The blanket really helps to keep the current day's temperature of the pool water overnight.
Wouldn't any leaves or dirty water just fall right in the pool?
Rolling it up is easy. The whole reason I watch was to see how easy it was to unroll it back on to the pool.
I will definitely do a video on that.
Green Mountain DIY Guy same here. Lol. Looks like a good system. Are you able to unroll it without getting in the pool.
Not a good Idea to use stainless screws which can cause galvanic corrosion to your tube. Better that the screws disintegrate over time. Thanks for the video. Did the gorilla tape work?
Good point. Yes, the tape is still working nicely!
hi is the clear solar cover effective as the blue ones in saving on chemicals and prevent evaporation?
I believe clear is not as effective. That's only my opinion.
It's the mil that matters most. His looks like 8mil. I went with 12mil
From what I have read it is quite a bit better art warming the pool uip during the day. For evaporation it makes no difference but chemicals willl be broken down faster.
needs more straps especially at the ends ,makes rolling it up a lot more uniform, build a stand so you can leave one end on pool an the other goes on stand
Funny you said that, I just replaced all of the straps yesterday and added two more, one on each end. The cover rolls on and off even better now!
What size pool is that? Does the reel sag at all in the middle after lots of use?
21 foot pool. Minimal sag. Thanks for watching!
If I was to order one.of these, which replacement parts would you recommend I buy?
I bought an extra wheel kit it so I have every replacement part in the setup.
@@GreenMountainDIYGuy ok thanks
How bad does it sag with the cover on. Have a 27ft pool and the reel I got sags terribly.
Very little sag! System isstil working well, I painted the end caps as they fade and became yellow. I also replace the cover a couple of times too.
Leaving solar covers rolled up in the sun destroys them. Don't ask how I know.
I don't think that true, we have always rolled up our solar covers.
@@theresajohnson5872 Did you leave them in the sun rolled up? That is what I was saying.
That's why the reel came with a cover😉
Another video that does not show the cover being unrolled.
Don't set it in the grass, it will kill your grass. Some of the more expensive ones tell you this on their web site.
Good Advice. I build a nice stand for it in this video. ruclips.net/video/nGzYvQBTSPs/видео.html Thanks for watching!
