In the year 2032, the line between humans and machines has been blurred almost beyond distinction. A string of murders perpetrated by a prototype android model has drawn the attention of Public Security Section 9, a unit specializing in counter cyber-terrorism. With none of the victims' families pressing charges, suspicions arise regarding the nature of the androids and their production company. In the course of the investigation, the almost entirely cyber-bodied agent Batou, and his still human partner Togusa embark on a journey through a technological dystopia, taking on ferocious Yakuza thugs, devious hackers, government bureaucrats, and corporate criminals to uncover the shocking truth behind the crime.
Acclaimed director Mamoru Oshii pushes further into the world and concepts first developed in his groundbreaking film Ghost in the Shell, considered one of the most important and iconic anime films ever made. With its thought-provoking speculations on artificial intelligence, which have only become more relevant in our present world.

Still fantastic 20 years later.
Probably true if one had seen it 10-20 years ago. Now it does look dated if someone is watching it for the first time.

And yes, she passed today, Aug 20 2024. I didn't know the voice actor name, but I've watched every single piece of GITS media with her voice on it, and what she gave the major, nobody else can. I almost felt happy she didn't die. When I figured your typo, and that she actually died today, I couldn't help but cry for the death of this person I didn't know the name of, but felt I knew so deeply well. The last time I felt like this for a voice was with Origa, who also put her voice on the most memorable music of Stand Alone Complex.
RIP Atsuko* Tanaka.

Absolutely the most terrifying thing I've seen. The power of this movie is incredible.
It's amazing, beautiful, breathtaking in its depiction of technology gone wild and a commentary on depravity and the " I'm not touching you" that technology can give.
This is amazing. They kept the feel and style of the original, while taking it to somewhere new.

It's just a restoration. The film itself (Innocence) was released in 2004, 20 years ago. You should've already watched it, but if this will make more people watch it, that's also great. It's the best animated film of all time, undoubtedly.
The festival scene in 4K will look absolutely amazing definitely one of the best animated scenes to ever hit media. No matter how much we as humanity advance culture and origin will always remain 🙏

Grew up on Masamune Shirow and the Appleseed Manga.
I remember it being really mind-bending compared to the first film and in need of a rewatch. It looks like the time to rewatch is soon.

Best looking anime ever.
Some of the digital stuff looks kinda weird/bad. You would think in 2024 there would be a filter to easily turn 3D animated CGI stuff into a cel-animated look, which I find much better for anime.
its just remastered from 2004. I guess they could have redid the cgi, but why bother.

CGI looks weird/uncanny but in a good way, and fits GiTS so well. GiTS always felt so uncomfortable and dreamlike with it's old intro on adult swim.

Has it really been 20 years? I remember when the first movie came out. Stunning and ground-breaking hardly describe Shirow Masamune's vision of the future. I wish someone would make a movie of Orion.

Well, I suppose it's "unpopular" by virtue of the fact that hardly anyone knows this even exists. Among fans it's widely recognized that Innocence is even better than the first one. In my opinion it's the best animated film of all time.
I still love the first one more, simply because the whole theme was much easier to follow. What does it really mean to be alive, to be humane? Like the sci-fi movie that inspired it, Ghost in the Shell was very Blade Runner-isc and a true classic.
In what sense, the animation style, story, everything?

The animation is definitely an improvement, the animation style still stands out today as remarkable. The story is also way better, with the plot being far more coherent. It's simply an absolute gem.

Well, I did already state that I think _Innocence_ is the best animated film of all time, and I really do mean that.
As for top 5 that's a harder ask. Off the top of my head (with a little bit of thought, but possibly not exhaustive) and restricting it to Japanese animation and films specifically, I'd say something like:
1. _Innocence_
2. _Paprika_
3. _Akira_
4. _Ghost in the Shell_
5. _Princess Mononoke_
Honorable mentions to _Redline_ and _Harmony_ as well, both of which I wanted to fit into the top 5, but just can't in light of the ones above; also to various other Miyazaki films, and to some of Shinkai's works, and also various more independent films that also stand out.

What woke really means, sexless true no he nor she nor it. GITS is a timeless classic. On par with Akira in its timeless nature and depth. Sadly the new reboots has lost its touch. Like a disney remakes, dummified and stupidified.
