  • On our recent Sand Sea City & Safari Journey, we encountered this thrilling spectacle.
The familiar sights of acacia trees and browsing herbivores were shattered by an unexpected discovery. High in the canopy, a colossal African rock python, easily exceeding five meters in length.
This wasn't your typical scene. Rock pythons are renowned for their terrestrial hunting, but here, this apex predator defied expectations, showcasing a rarely witnessed arboreal prowess.
Mesmerized, we watched the giant snake with its amber scales catching the sunlight as it descended smoothly from the tree, its belly full from a feast of bird eggs.
This was a valuable lesson in the remarkable adaptability of African wildlife. The rock python, often thought of as a terrestrial ambush predator, demonstrated its opportunistic nature and the diverse strategies it employs to dominate its ecosystem.
    Location: Sabi Sands, South Africa.

What a sighting as they are mostly nocturnal and use the darkness to ambush their prey.

South Africa does not have any true african rock pythons. These are a closely related species called the Southern African python. For some reason people like to call them african rock pythons, but they are an entirely different species of python.
For the record, Southern african pythons are the 2nd largest in africa. I wish people would start calling them by the correct name. At LEAST half the videos i watch about "african rock pythons" are the wrong species. It just causes unnecesary confusion to call them the wrong name. Its so bad that MOST tour guides use the wrong name these days.
