Very useful.. Really detailed.. Awesome video.. But the question still remains does it need to get reprogrammed?? And will it still work with a used one.. This type of steering system is just asking for someone to get hurt.. Be safe out there every one..
Thank you for the comment , Yes still needs to be programmed , BUT ( when driving to ford dealership to have it programmed it worked just fine ) , So I would say just have it programmed to be on the save side .
@heartlandmechanic so if I do the install/replacement myself the dealer can reprogram it? Do you know how much that would cost? Cause I was going to have them do the whole job and they were asking $3500 😢 I'm just trying to see what's my best option. Thanks in advance, and thanks for this video 👍
How do you know which would be the correct replacement rack and pinion to order, before hand, to have it ready to install, once the old one is out? Thank you in advance
Thanks for the video. My 2013 Ford F150 only has 32,000 miles, but I have gotten a Power Steering Assist Fault 3 times in the last week. I turn the car off and restart and it goes away. I also noticed that left turns require less steering effort than right turns (though both are clearly assisted, just different levels of assist). I have no idea whether it has always done that or whether I'm just paying more attention after getting the Power Steering Assist Fault. I'm guessing I will probably require this replacement on my truck. Really sucks given I have only 32,000 miles on my truck. I have seen numerous complaints of these units failing and they apparently are expensive to have replaced. Ford really screwed up. I wish they had left the hydraulic power steering system in the F150.
Yeah fords way to make you visit the dealer, i replaced mine with a ebay one rebuilt from detroit axle with lifetime warantee for abt 700. Not too bad if u ask me. Compared to dealer price
I swear man Ford loves to make problems. They've been making pickups way to long to know what works and what doesn't. I saw that they recalled a massive amount of 2014 f150s for the same exact problem the 2013s had.. The rack..
My name is Jessi Beltran, I am trying to replace my Rack and pinion on a 2011 Ford F-150 I have bought a used rack and pinion for the truck Will I have to program the New/Used rack pinion or can I install how it is?
I heard that if you use a used rack and pinion then you don't have to have it's programed.. is that true? Btw thanks for the vid! I found it very helpful.. getting ready to yank the rack outta my 2014 f150
I put a used one on this truck for the customer , all warning light went out and it worked just fine . drove it around about 10 miles without any issues .the only thing was that it would not cummunicate with my scanner so i told the customer to have it programed to be a the safe side , thanks for watching.
@@heartlandmechanic hold on it wouldn't communicate with your scanner. Had an impact on mine but it still worked after changing driver side complete suspension it just quit working and it's not communicating with his scanner
On Ford's parts site, find steering gear, and then scroll down to selection that says associated parts. You're going to find the bolts. They're $8 a piece, but they only come packaged and sets of four. The bolts are different lengths. One of them is a blind hole and the other one the bolt goes all the way through. You have to have the right ones, and they are a torque to yield bolt.
Will it mess up the rack driving without being coded? I'm about to replace mine on a 2014 f150 xlt part ste-121, or do I have to have it towed to dealership to have coded? Or would the part matching my vin be ready to go frm start?
As far as the bolts are concerned, they are torqued to yield, you are really warned to replace them because of that. They are only sold in sets of four, so you're going to get four of one side and four of the other because they are two different lengths I believe the torque setting is 325 ft lb.
@AntonioGreene-yw8tj I think my comments are not showing, trying again. Yes a belt internal to the steering rack. I rebuilt mine while it was still in the truck. I have a video on my channel I made on how to do it.
What goes out in these things exactly? My ‘11 model lost power steering on left turns then threw a fault. I cut it off and cranked back up and it worked fine, then down the road I go and it lost all power. I barely made it through the day steering it
Can you drive it unprogrammed? Or does it need yo be towed?
Why would they make an electric steering ? Of course its not going to last as long as a hydraulic one

Mine doesn't squeal or whine it makes a low moan or grinding sound and feeling when turning the wheel. Other than that it works fine.

Hey I’m having the same problem on my truck! What did you do to fix the problem?
. You do not have to replace the rack. It's just a $50 built inside where the motor is.I have a youtube video and how to do it.

What size are the main bolts that hold the rack and pinion in
Look them up on Ford parts site. The 2 bolts are different lengths and are torqued to something like 325ft lbs

thank you , happy that you joined the channel .
Can I replace this unit with the earlier hydraulic power steering unit? I think hydraulic was still available in early 2011.
Does anyone know if programming is required OR is it just plug and play and no programming required.
Needs programming. It’s required
Did you put new bolts in or use the old. I’m having a tough time finding bolts

How did you program the new rack? Also mine just gives the service steering rack and doesn’t make any noises.
Had to take it to the Ford dealership and have them program it . This one didn't have a service light come on after replacement .
@@heartlandmechanic yeah I think mines completely dead to where it like manual steering. I’m sure the PCM on the rack is dead.

yes you can drive it to dealership and have it programmed , take your old rack with you they may need to retrieve data from it.
Use Forscan and a Vlinker adapter to reprogram for free. You just need to write the As Built data to the PSCM.
Thanks for the video. Do you remember what size those 2 bolts were that go through the rack?
sorry I don't remember .
The Left Side Is 1” 1/4
Right side 1” 1/16

Very expensive, my truck only had 108,000. Miles on it when I have to replace it. 2200. 00.
You did not have to replace the rack. It's just a internal $50 belt that runs it.
