  • A penalty dropped him to a P6 start on race day - but that didn't stop Michael Schumacher producing one last bit of Monaco magic in his final F1 season, clocking the fastest time during Qualifying in the principality.

I honestly agree when lewis joined mercedes it was considered a shock move because they were back then a midfield team now imagine a 43 yr old in his 2nd f1 stint getting the fastest lap with this unreliable midfield car against prime seb and prime alonso with a ferrari and red bull now imagine outpacing them on the most unforgiving track with arguably the 6th fastest car at 43 yrs old, genuinely his greatest feat imo

The truth about Schumacher needing his teammates to sign #2 driver contracts so they weren't allowed to beat compete against him on a level playing field has been leaked. His whole first career is based in a lie:
"At the time I handled people like Rubens Barrichello, Eddie Irvine, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jean Alesi, and every time we went to sign a contract with Michael Schumacher or Ferrari it always had conditions in it" - Eddie Jordon.
"Whether I signed with Eddie Irvine, Rubens Barrichello or whoever they were - there was a clause there that they always had to play second-fiddle to Michael Schumacher.' Eddie Jordan
"I had an opportunity to go to Ferrari but the contract that was offered by Jean was that if Michael was 5th and I was 4th, I had to move over, and, if I was 1st and he was 2nd, I had to move over.I couldn't sign a contract that committed me to being a #2" - David Coulthard.
"Ferrari, the contract that was offered effectively made me, on paper, number two to Michael. I've no doubt that Michael was the stronger driver out of the two because I recognise he was a better overall package than I was but at that stage of my career, I just couldn't accept signing a number two contract and that's why I decided to sign at McLaren and I think that was the right decision for my career." David Coulthard.

Schumacher was needed to complete the eventual dominance of the silver cars. Everywhere schumacher went, those teams became championship contenders. From benetton, to mercedes. All the recent dominant teams where all in part thanks to schumacher besides Red Bull.

Many, many different winners (7 in the first 7 races), many world titles together (2 Vettel, 1 Ham, 2 Alonso, 1 Kimi, 7 Schumi, 1 Button...), the beautiful V8 and 2012 cars, unpredictable races because of the tyres...and an AWESOME ending to the season.
I've no doubt that Michael was the stronger driver out of the two because I recognise he was a better overall package than I was but at that stage of my career, I just couldn't accept signing a number two contract and that's why I decided to sign at McLaren and I think that was the right decision for my career." I read this article recently where the contention is that Michael's driving style and setup preferences didn't really suit these 2010-2012 machinery and Pirelli tyres. Monaco's the sort of place where his natural style - loose back end and incredible car control - minimizes the how understeery these cars were. And wet weather. What a lap.

Yes, indeed. Montreal 2011 would have been a victory for him, instead the race was suspended until the rain stopped and the track was dry again.

Strange how many likes people have for this comment, without knowing any facts. That Merc was very aggressive on tires, which was why it was good on a single lap. Not very good at all in a race distance though. Michael was like his old self here, but sadly he was very inconsistent at times. He deserved to stay in that team though, because without all the car failures that were out of his control, he would've beaten Nico over the season.

In Monaco. The only real DRIVERS track where the car is less important than the driver. With 43 Years an absolute beast.

Greiguci Wootchie that’s because Monaco is not a track where a car with high top speed is required. It is a track where the set up through the slow corners has to be good and also where the skills of the driver is very important.Michael is and was the best driver of all time.

    What a little star.
    Pole position, well done Michael.
    Fantastic, well done.
Looking back it’s wonderful to hear Ross Brawn’s voice.
You can feel their deep friendship in those words.
And I guess Ross knew how difficult those times really were for Michael.
I am also sure that the consequent development of those years (especially with the help of Brawn and Schumacher) paved the way to the long success series of Mercedes in F1.

That's a 43 year old driver achieving a pole position lap in qualifying in Monaco. Despite how his ride with Mercedes was, this just shows the pure skill Michael had. Those who claim Hamilton to be the GOAT, this man was building foundations for this team. After 2021 i can honestly say i wish he hadn't. Luckily Ham will never match his 5 titles in a row record. Ever.
