When I load a low-clearance vehicle on my trailer, I put the tongue jack down and raise the front of the trailer 2-3" (while staying connected to the truck), this makes a good improvement in the rear ramp angle. Just dont forget to raise the jack back up before you drive off.
Having been to the GJ EA before I am very impressed how you got into that with a trailer! Happy to see something being done on #1. It’s been offline for many months. Getting across that intersection is scary even when driving.
26:13 The early Signets definitely did push too much power if they weren't installed/set up properly. I saw that in my Chevy Bolt EV a few years ago as well. The properly installed Signets had no issues at all, but at one of the problem sites, a Signet unit tried to push over 200 A to my Bolt EV before the car cut the charge session off.

(I do most of my driving in the city anyways and do the occasional road trip (once a year) to colorado springs from Cali to visit my grandparents and i think the charging on trips a few times a year would be worth the savings of a bolt these days.
We stay in grand junction in our annual trip from LA to Omaha Nebraska. Take the dogs with us. The Hilton there also is nice and is dog friendly. They also have a charger there but parking isn’t easy if you get late with a trailer and often the charger has someone there without an electric car in its spot.

@@rockshox71 The Cyber truck long range version is 500 miles, which is a minimum if you're gonna tow, not to mention a superior charging speed. The R1T's 300 miles range is not enough, especially with the poor CCS charging experience..
Dog road trips are awesome! I did two cross country trips in my old BMW 328xi in 2018 and 2019 with two dogs. Dog friendly hotels can be a bit janky but it's part of the fun.
Grand Junction has many hotels and restaurants, a Regal Cinemas theater, Mesa Mall, Colorado National Monument, fruit orchards, wineries. I live 3 hours from there (SE) and take mini vacations/weekends there a few times a year.
Planning a 4-5k mile road trip in my MYP next month, so this charging fault info is definitely valuable for me when deciding whether to use EA as an alternative to the Tesla Supercharger network. Love all the testing and investigating you guys do!
hmm I'd cross strap the load... the straps are a bitt long in the front witch can give you quit som unwonted movement on the load... cross straps wouldn't make any differens on movement backwards but cross straping would mitigate sideways movement... keep up the good work...Love your videos.
Problems with Charging, well I have the same, just took delivery of a brand new 2023 Ionic 5 and it cannot DC charge, technicians are still debugging it, but assumption is a Temperature sensor, where they do not know yet. Plug car into multiple 25KW, 50KW, 200KW and 350KW, car just communicates, the charger starts and it stops immediately, with the charger stating the Vehicle stopped the charging session. The car has no issues with Level 2 charging. I am glad I tested it before going on a long planned road trip, cannot be too carefull!
Drivers who are on the road and trailering really need a drive through charging station . I would see a good position for States is to incorporate a safe easy station at all state rest areas , these have plenty of room and usually are right off interstates grouped in defined long stretches of road range . Texas would be a good test bed for a program .
Man that sucks about the regen breaking issue and limit. If EVs had a partial super capacitor added to battery pack I wonder if that would help issue or maybe electric motors overheating with regen? Weird.
Saw the TFL guys tow up that pass with their F-150 Lightning, and on the downhill they were able to regen a lot. So Ford has that figured out.. Hopefully, Rivian can too.

This is why Tesla is still ahead of the curve, I'm not sitting in a 100k car with my family trying to deal with charging issues in the middle of nowhere. I get Kyle can do this for content, The experiences I've had road tripping with my Audi E tron in the past is why I sold and bought a Model X Plaid. The symbiotic relationship of supercharger network and your Tesla is 2nd to none. Anybody who's truly experienced both will know this to be true. My wife and kids will not be waiting a second longer than need be trying to figure out charging situations, In my Tesla you just plug in and boom you're charging. No third party apps and software/car troubles.
Pretty sure the lack of regen was largely due to the external temperature. Even with optimal temperatures and a mostly empty pack, going down a mountain in a Tesla with consistent slowing eventually causes the regen to reduce until it is negligible. I can imagine the same issue affecting any EV that can't temp control the pack at a high temp while the external temps are low. EA Chargers not being great. Not surprising tbh. Hope they get things in order quickly so it doesn't discourage further EV adoption.
It's always good to get the real story on EVs. If it's bad then people should know it's bad and how it got fixed and if it's good then EVs should get the credit. Things won't get fixed unless people are honest about the problems.
I have had the new EA station in Atascadero brick my Taycan twice by delivering more than the car was asking for. Once the car would not allow charging until it sat for 15 minutes. I hope a fix is top priority. I had reported problem to EA and Porsche.
Same charging issue using the 350 kw EA chargers. Apparently delivering more power than Rivian can handle. Who's fault it is? Don't know if it's Rivian or EA. I had planned to do a reset, but called Rivian first. Rivian instructed me to "let the truck rest" for 30 minutes. Shut it off and let it sit for 30 minutes. The error killed power to the truck. Was able to drive, but probably with 30% of the normal acceleration. I checked into my hotel, came out 10-12 minutes later and the truck was fine. Have had multiple issues using 350 kw chargers. I've stopped using them and just use the 150 kw chargers, which charge from 10-90% in about the same amount of time as do the 350 kw chargers. The 350 kw chargers appear to overheat the Rivian, which then ramps down charging rate below what the 150 kw chargers hold at. Keeeping in mind, the peak gain is only about 50 kw, being that the Rivian can only charge at 200, thus 350 kw is mostly unnecessary. The 150 kw is slightly below, but holds the rate of charge longer. By 40-50%, it's charging faster than the 350 kw charger does, at least in my multiple cases.
Seeing you loose all that regen makes me crazy. When I road trip in my Tesla I love watching regen bring the battery back up. You think that issue is a Rivian regen is hardware or software?

I've been watching a lot of your videos and man you really put a lot of work & thought into EVs...To sum it all up it appears owning an EV & towing with it or going on road trips is an absolute hellish experience. What a nightmare. Chargers broken, bugs in the vehicles, getting stuck at a slow charger, being asked to leave...struggling to park, only 100 miles of range.. it just could not get any worse. This is clear proof EVs are nowhere near a legitimate replacement of internal combustion engine, even with proper charging infrastructure you would still need to constantly stop. This is such an eye opener to how much BS is being fed to us about EVs.
Now that Coach Prime/Deion Sanders in the biggest thing in the state of Colorado, it seems CU football games are going to be a huge attraction. If I drive up for a game, how EV-friendly is the campus? Would love to see a road trip from you!

When I use the new EA hardware with my ID4, the EA screen shows how much current is being requested by the car. I wonder if that depends on the car, but seems like it would have been useful info with the faults you were getting.
My friend here in Beckley west Virginia has a hummer ev and he had to take it to Beckley auto mall Buick GMC because the Tesla charging station at crossroads mall ruined his truck
Kyle. Too bad the Lucid Air was not able to tow as you could switch off tow vehicles then when the 2nd EV was empty then charge BOTH vehicles at the same stop and rinse and repeat. That would save half the time charging and stopping.
My border collie/lab/chihuahua does the same EXACT thing in the car but 10x worse. The wimpering/whining is right in your ear while he constantly tries to jump up front
That regen limit is super weird. But I got something similar in my Ioniq 5 down that same hill. But it only did it in cruise control. Turned off cruise and it would regen fully.
Hey team, I have a question regarding towing with an EV (specifically R1T). I live in Raleigh, NC and will need to tow my boat to Carolina Beach, preferably without stopping (I have a toddler). The boat with trailer is only 3000lbs (custom built light weight bay boat), do you think it’s doable? Right now there’s only 1 CCS charger on I-40 East at a bbq place, based on plug share it is constantly in use.
I get what you're saying about not wanting to stop, but I would hit up the EA in Smithfield, boost it to 100 and go for it. I go to Oak Island every year(not towing anything) and I find I get pretty good mileage since it's all so flat. Kyle is towing a lot heavier and in big mountains and almost getting the Smithfield to Carolina mileage, so you should be all set. You may even be able to make it from Raleigh, but you can gauge your mileage before you get to Smithfield and see what you've got. I assume you'll charge up before the return trip. The flat terrain is your biggest asset.
With all those problems that would be a miserable trip. A gas or diesel vehicle would have solved all that. My guess is that the losing of regen on the downhill is due to too high a speed. Keep the speed, with the brakes, in the area where it is first getting full regen and I think that will solve the problem. Also taking it out of tow mode may help fix that issue. As to the overcharge amount from the station, the Rivian has a bad design. The truck should control the rate it gets, NOT the charging station. I understand that the truck tells the station what it wants, but that is a bad design. The truck should do the limiting itself regardless of what the charger tries to push. Lastly that trailer is loaded improperly for safety.
34:33 you need connections at rivian PR, engineers and help from Twitter users to figure out charging in a few of the NEWER infrastructure locations. what's the best brainstorming idea? How to use up the additional kw with the defroster, heating elements, lights, AC, cooktop, compressor so the charging circuitry can deal with 150kw at high state of charge? Unbelievable.

Why didn't you put the remote for the Lucid in an aluminum pouch. (ie, potato chip bag,several) Or take the battery out.

It’s crazy that you regen goes away so quickly what that low SoC. It should be a dream scenario, downhill with tons of weight.
It cooks the Inverter. Sad that it overheats that fast, ESPECIALLY with it being near freezing temps.

Often times it’s the inverters that overheat. Not sure if that’s the issue with the Rivian specifically.

Keep an RFID protection bag handy for caging up that Lucid keyfob. Heck, wrap it in aluminum foil..

Kyle, you may be able to fix the light issues with the Lucid by unplugging the 12v while its on the trailer.
The 12v battery on the lucid is in a location that is nearly impossible to access. Under the rear wheel well liner.

Couldn't you have taken the battery out of the lucid's key fob to stop it from unlocking?
They should really put a tow mode in the cars. You hit tow mode and its automatically all sensors off.

When I use the new EA hardware with my ID4, the EA screen shows how much current is being requested by the car. I wonder if that depends on the car, but seems like it would have been useful info with the faults you were getting.
My friend here in Beckley west Virginia has a hummer ev and he had to take it to Beckley auto mall Buick GMC because the Tesla charging station at crossroads mall ruined his truck

Kyle. Too bad the Lucid Air was not able to tow as you could switch off tow vehicles then when the 2nd EV was empty then charge BOTH vehicles at the same stop and rinse and repeat. That would save half the time charging and stopping.
My border collie/lab/chihuahua does the same EXACT thing in the car but 10x worse. The wimpering/whining is right in your ear while he constantly tries to jump up front

That regen limit is super weird. But I got something similar in my Ioniq 5 down that same hill. But it only did it in cruise control. Turned off cruise and it would regen fully.
Hey team, I have a question regarding towing with an EV (specifically R1T). I live in Raleigh, NC and will need to tow my boat to Carolina Beach, preferably without stopping (I have a toddler). The boat with trailer is only 3000lbs (custom built light weight bay boat), do you think it’s doable? Right now there’s only 1 CCS charger on I-40 East at a bbq place, based on plug share it is constantly in use.
I get what you're saying about not wanting to stop, but I would hit up the EA in Smithfield, boost it to 100 and go for it. I go to Oak Island every year(not towing anything) and I find I get pretty good mileage since it's all so flat. Kyle is towing a lot heavier and in big mountains and almost getting the Smithfield to Carolina mileage, so you should be all set. You may even be able to make it from Raleigh, but you can gauge your mileage before you get to Smithfield and see what you've got. I assume you'll charge up before the return trip. The flat terrain is your biggest asset.

With all those problems that would be a miserable trip. A gas or diesel vehicle would have solved all that. My guess is that the losing of regen on the downhill is due to too high a speed. Keep the speed, with the brakes, in the area where it is first getting full regen and I think that will solve the problem. Also taking it out of tow mode may help fix that issue. As to the overcharge amount from the station, the Rivian has a bad design. The truck should control the rate it gets, NOT the charging station. I understand that the truck tells the station what it wants, but that is a bad design. The truck should do the limiting itself regardless of what the charger tries to push. Lastly that trailer is loaded improperly for safety.
