I had previously done a video on Mazzy Star's history as I mentioned David Roback. Here's the video if you're interested. ruclips.net/video/Gm4PFPHNCJQ/видео.html&pp=ygUKbWF6enkgc3Rhcg%3D%3D
In April 1989 I went to their concert. We skipped school and stood in line all day. Got front row. All through the show the drummer Debbie and I kept making eye contact and smiling. I was 16 at the time. At the end of the show Debbie leaned down and gave me one of her drumsticks. I was in heaven! What a treat for a teenager. They gave a great show too!
What a great story and memory.
@gissellest333 ya. It's been with me for 34 years! And I've telling people all along the way. That's something you never forget!
@@boicrazee Still got the drumstick?
@TheFunkyMonk32 yes. I sure do.
@@boicrazee That's brilliant.
Susanna Hoffs social media kept showing up in my feeds earlier this year, despite not following or liking her pages. She looks great in 2023.
My wife said she was trending recently on tiktok so it may have something to do with that
Uh yeah!
I think she performed at some New Year's Countdown show earlier this year - perhaps that was it?
Thanks for the info checking it out now. She was my favorite in the band so many years ago.
This happened to me too. Glad it did though.
Susannah Hoffs was beautiful back in the day and still is
Still love her singing voice. It's got sort of an enchanting quality to it.
With all due respect, she was the hottest female singer of all time, in my opinion :)
Beautiful eyes never grow old //
@@freibert- Oh those eyes. I’m a photographer on Long Island, NY and did years photographing model portfolios in Manhattan, NYC. I would have done a lot to have been able to do one for Susannah. The eyes and how she uses them do it for me.
But I retired when everyone was wearing masks, cops were getting killed and the city got very dangerous.
The members of the band are still gorgeous if you ask me.
Susanna especially, she must bathe in formaldehyde or made a pact with Satan or something.
I didn't
I feel the same about KISS!
Are you a woman?
@@bltvd No. Why?
Every time I hear the band name I can't help but whistle the part from "Walking Like an Egyptian".. Love that song.
Walk like an erection.
Even though I was an adult, I had a huge crush on Susanna Hoffs
Everyone of all ages did! I was just a little kid and I did. She's a little fox.
How dare you even think about my girlfriend!
She's ALWAYS been my future ex-wife! Even as a teen!
You like'em young huh? 😂
Susanna Hoffs is one of the most beautiful women ever to exist on this planet. It’s sad that her beauty and talent outweighed the whole band - that should never happen - but my goodness she is an absolute stunner and she still looks incredible.
My dad was obsessed with her.
Yeah, she's beautiful to the point that it doesn't even make sense
She just turned 60 but looks 38. Very attractive woman.
I had a huge crush on Michael. For the longest time was listening for a song with only her as lead singer. "September Girls" was a good one for me.
Gross
I’d say the best Big Star cover, ever.
Beta
Mikki was my favourite too. I wish she'd come back and do more songs.
@@robgraham9947 she is a few years older than the others. Hope she is OK.
One of the best bands of the ‘80s. Thank you so much for making this.
You’re welcome, more 80s stuff coming and as always use our request form to let us know what topics you’d like to see us cover. It’s In the description box
That's in your opinion! To me they were nice looking girls and the singer was good but their music was crap.
@@vincentlussier8264Let’s hear your music then, bro.
except they didn't write any of their hits. Hoffs had a co-write credit on a couple, but that's it
@@Kirkvanhouten55 So what? Elvis Presley didn't write ANY of his songs! 🎵🎼🎶
Susanna Hoffs was the most beautiful woman to ever walk the planet. Great singer as well.
She had me going in the '80's when I saw the Bangle's videos.
A truer thing has never been said.
"was"
@@getit9066 Sure, she's gotten older but it's not like she's ugly now.
@@Grimlock1979 Concur, she's still gorgeous. But he wrote "was." Thanks for picking up on that.
Imagine if Walk like an Egyptian came out in 2023. They would be cancelled by Twitter in about 10 minutes, and platforms would refuse to host the song.
Yet songs like "WAP" get continuous play. It's a shame.
As an 80's teen myself, i can say unequivocally that the world today is unrecognizable, and nearly all for the worse.....
The 80's was this countries peak of freedom, fun, non-division, and prosperity, before the decline....
Twitter doesn't exist anymore
What makes you think that? Are you drunk?
Right, that is because of the lbgtq and blm and antifa, they are very nice people, even the fat hens on the view would say something not nice about the song Walk like an Egyptian.
Suzanna Hoffs is my hero. She kept herself healthy and still looks great.
Susanna...GODDESS. ❤❤❤
Always ❤❤❤
She was my favorite!
Most definitely!, ... those eyes of hers always (and still do) drive me crazy!
I have seen them twice in concert. Michael Steele has always been my favorite. I love their music and still listen to it all the time
All due respect to Monday and Egyptian, but "Eternal Flame" was their masterpiece. The way Hoffs delivers her Vocal on that one is so vulnerable and fragile. It's subtle yet soaring.
I’m from Brazil and the best Brazilian soap opera ever (Que Rei Sou Eu) had Eternal Flame on the soundtrack, so it was a huge hit in the country back in 1989.
I love September Gurls too.
This is simple
Eternal flame is fucking Awesome
and Suzanna, EVEN TODAY, Looks totally rootable LOL
i don't see a difference in her today from when i was 16, it's like age has not touched her
and the years have said....No we won't do that to her.
Basically SHE'S STILL HOT
Monday was actually written by Prince because he was trying to hook up with Suzanna Hoff
@@robertturi2264 Prince trying to hook up with a hot chick? I dunno it doesn't sound like him.
I had a huge crush on Michelle Steele. Actually met her at a Michael Monroe concert
Susanna Hoffs has the face and the voice of an angel.
Those eyes ! They made me melt as a teen. 0_0
still has.
Really well done. Great video. Susanna Hoff’s 3 second side-eye vaulted that band like crazy.
Not a fan (not in any genre I was digging), but DANG! Hazy Shade of Winter - especially in the scenes of Less Than Zero - more than did Paul Simon proud.
Their cover has its faults (drum, organ sounds) but is still better than the original, which is really saying something. They made it their own, which a lot of musicians are afraid or unable to do.
Very observant & accurate comment about her alluring "side-eye" and great way to put it! She knows how to flirt for the camera!. Loved her side-eye!
So, I'm not the only one that was floored by the side-eye thing. Her stage presence was commanding.
@@CatManDo3927 it was no secret. Sort of the “wink heard ‘round the world.” Haha.
I was fortunate to have hired them to perform in concert, on 4th July in Newport Beach, CA. at the resort I had managed. Circa 2012. They were truly amazing. Large crowds showed up to see them perform.
Miki was from Newport Beach.
Was it Newport Dunes?
What do you think it would it take to get them together for a few shows?
@@brentjarvis8940 it might be more difficult now.
@@flavellinator yes at Newport Dunes!
If anyone is curious Susanna Hoffs went to UC Berkeley, not Berklee College of Music. You were mentioning it in a good context but wanted to verify. Great video, thank you!
Berkeley makes more sense bc she was from LA !
There are very few things that are absolute freakin perfection and their cover of 'Hazy Shade of Winter' is it.
Very very good song! Time Time Time see what it's done to me....
Love that tune, and due to my interests in UK Slot Machines, you will notice that a company called Maygay (Based in Wolverhampton, just out of Birmingham), used a sample on several of their game, Monopoly being one of special note.
One of a handful of covers that are better than the original and, in this case, the original is awesome! Their version is an absolute banger!
Their music on that song was awesome
I LOVE The Bangles. Btw, I didn't know the sisters and Hoffs met via The Recycler! That's how James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich (Metallica) also met eachother. I love little links like that 😊
Susanna is one of my first childhood crushes ❤❤❤
I saw The Bangles in about 2010 and from 35 away I locked eyes with Susanna Hoffs for a few seconds. She was still smoking and shredding on the guitar.
Susannah Hoffs is still a total babe!
I can't believe I'm just finding out about this band, these ladies rock! Susanna Hoff's vocals are absolutely soul-melting!
This is one of the reasons I love this channel so much because I not only learn about the bands that inspired me to become a musician/songwriter, but it also helps me find bands/musicians that I've never heard of.
Keep up the good work my friend!
You must be young because they were very popular in the 1980's. All over the radio and anywhere you went.
@@ItsAllAboutGuitar I was born in 1980. I've been listening to their music and Hoff's solo work as well. Amazing stuff!
Susanna Hoff’s side eye in those old videos helped turn me from a boy to a man
I found the song "Eternal Flame" interesting enough to purchase it in 1989; it was one of the last 45 rpm vinyl records I ever bought having been a record buyer since the early 1960s. I think the recording is still pleasant to listen to almost thirty-five years later.
In the U.k. Girl Group Atomic Kitten would take it to Number 1 a second time with their 2001 cover version. It is nice to think that Susanna got some more royalties from that.
in one of my back-up cars, i have an older CD player....4 CDs in it, including "Different Light" CD, and "All over the place" CD. (tool and NIN) are the other 2 lol
Records are out living cd’s
@@Welcome_To_Life not if you use one as home-plate in baseball
“Eternal Flame” would be the perfect song for a hemorrhoid cream commercial.
I was in 7th grade when "Walk Like An Egyptian" came out. I loved that song! It was a huge hit on the radio. All the girls in junior high loved this song, too.
I was in day care when it came out, and one day the boys and girls both got to pick a song to lip sync. The boys picked Eye of the Tiger, and the Girls picked Walk like an Egyptian, and being a boy I was so upset that I wasn’t able to do the Bangles song!
Saw them play in 2008. On that night, there was a technical hitch and they had no monitor so in theory, they were playing deaf! Even so, they smashed it and got every note perfect!
Always loved the super hot Bangles! Very talented musicians and had a great sound! Susanna, what a crush I had on her!
I was driving past SLC in January 1985 when the local radio station mentioned the bangles were playing at the armory. I pulled off the freeway and found the armory. No line as the show was already started. The Hoo Doo Gurus opened, another of my favorite bands!
Loved them back in the 1980s! Susanna Hoffs my girlie crush!
Prince was a superhero
Great video. Love that band. Their first 3 records are all really good, and the cover of Hazy Shade of Winter makes me wish that they had done an entire album with Rick Rubin producing.
That cover is beyond epic! A record with Rubin would have been awesome.
Thanks
Agreed. Rubinstein the man. A string of albums with him woulda solidified their fame and they'd still around today.
I've read that there was considerable conflict between Rubin and The Bangles over the production of that single. It's a banger for sure.
their first 3 records? their third record was "Different Light". their second was "all over the place". their first album was without Michael Steele.
The Bangles were fabulous. I love their music and often wonder why there isn't more all-female rock bands in the charts today killing it like they did.
first thing a girl has to do is learn how to play an an instrument.......see what the problem is?
In the modern age there's too much going on for people to learn an instrument.
@@6581punk Yeah, why bother learning to play and sing well when technology can do it for you!
@@perry92964 Plenty of girls play instruments, it's all about what drives you to succeed in the music business and there seems to be less drive for women these days to rock.
There are still some in the metal world. Check out Burning Witches, Cobra Spell, The Warning, Crypta, lots of great all female bands out there.
Very cool. We were fans.
I took my Wife and young daughter to Marriotts Great America, Ca to enjoy the amusement park and a show by the Bangles. This is like '89 and my daughter was maybe 7.
She's dancing in the aisle and everything was great. Show ended with a huge 'jam' and seemed the Gals were having a great time.
Go to the babysitters the next day to learn The Bangles had broken up after the show. We were heartbroken.
Good band. I miss those days.
The Allnighter has a funny scene of Hoffs doing a spastic dance. Still makes me laugh. On a separate note, I always thought Michael Steele was a hottie back in the day, especially when she grew her hair long and dyed it red.
You know you're doing something right if at the beginning of your bands career that a musical genius like Prince sends you your first hit song
Prince wanted to hit on that! Can’t blame him!
@@Geezer-yf8hv he was hitting that.
He did the same for Sinéad O'Connor...
“Going Down to Liverpool” is one of my all time favorite songs. It’s a bucket list item to go to Liverpool to just listen to the song, and sit around and do nothing.
First performed by another American, Katrina and the waves ,ironic a song about an English city only ever covered by Americans!

You did a good job on this video. It was a well thought out and executed recounting of the history of a rather unique group of musicians. Well done.
Thanks
An impressive aspect with this video was the sources that were cited. Not many YT presentations take that extra step, which steps up the video's credibility, with quoting sources with the information they present.
The Bangles have not released a full length album since Sweetheart Of The Sun in 2011, but they still tour on occasion, and Susanna Hoffs has released a few solo albums in the last few years.
They all still good looking today
I always had a thing for Mickie.
Incredibly beautiful they were.
An great songs too.
I loved the Bangles early tunes when they had a cool 1960s sound.
Hoffs had a unique voice. I think thats why they got famous
I mean, there's pretty. And then there's Susanna Hoffs.. That's just taking liberties with how lucky someone can be to be born looking that good.
Great video. With loads of stuff I'd never heard about the band before.
I have the first two albums and they are very good. The record company they were with compromised their music just a bit too much in my view. But in spite of that The Bangles are a great band and the live performances I’ve seen on TV/RUclips are great - they shone live. The Bangles are part of the soundtrack of my teenage years. Love them.
Oh yeah, The Bangles!! Plenty of memories from the 80's actually include The Bangles!!
Great video man!!
AGAIN!!
😎
They left their mark on 80’s pop culture. Still get goosebumps hearing their Simon and Garfunkel cover on Stranger Things.
Although I wasn’t a fan of Bangles their history like many others is very interesting & thankfully there’s guys like you bringing it to life 👍😁Thankyou from near Bournemouth
I used to have such a teenage crush growing up in the 80s on the lead singer lol.
When you're young. You don't realize how good you have it. Until you screw it up. And then it's over. They were coworkers. Not best childhood friends. The lead singer was pretty and could sing and draw attention to the band. Just be happy with making money and being famous, while you're able.
Susanna Hoffs in her prime........... Sweet baby Jesus!!! 🥴
She still looks just as good today.
I wasn't much of a fan of the band, but I had a huge crush on Susanna when I was growing up. A million years ago.
Great group, and of course, "Mega Babes!" Susan Hoff still makes me weak in the knees when I see her. lol
I am a metal head but loved this band, as a young man at the time, i was not alone, i often talk with old friends and we talk about Susannah when talking about old bands and hot female singers, all my friends remember her , all my friends think the same thing, she was #1 :)
What a shame we didn't get to hear more from The Bangles. I mean, I like The Go Go's, but I LOVE The Bangles.
They were all jealous of how gorgeous Susanna was and still is and got so much attention. They were all gorgeous too. It's women. Put 'em all in the same cage for a while and they'll eventually kill each other.
@@ItsAllAboutGuitar I hear you, this is a problem with women sometimes. But I think they weren't promoted properly.

oh, maaaaan. Me and all my friends were in love with these ladies, and they had some great tunes!
I'm a hard rocking Vietnam veteran and I loved the bangles, along with the Marshal Tucker band
I saw the Bangles at Bristol Bierkeller. Hate Manic Monday but favourite tracks are Hero Takes a Fall, Hazy Shade of Winter and Different Light.
LOVE The Bangles! A very well put together video. You nailed all the highlights. I would probably say their first full length album "All Over The Place" is my favorite.
Hazy Shade of Winter.
That is all.
It's a guilty pleasure to like this act, but when a song is 30 years old & you still like hearing it on the radio, it's only rock 'n' roll, but I like it. I always turn it up when Walk Like An Egyptian come on.
These girls are incredibly gorgeous. Still to this day. The music is good and timeless.
I can certainly see why Susanna Hoffs was the most photographed. I’d imagine anyone with eyes could see why.
saw them in '86 or '87 at an outdoor concert they did in Newport News Virginia for a 4th of July celebration, they sounded great played great were in perfect tune they looked beautiful and they were not lip synching it was real, really enjoyed them

Suzanna got me through high school with those damn eyes... Thank you Suzanna!
Left or right hand?
They were magnificent, the real thing especially live! They still are. I admit that when I first heard them in a club in 1984, they sounded like a garage band instrumentally BUT with fabulous VOCALS, glorious harmonies which was rare and HOFFS VOCAL TIMBRE was and is still incredibly appealing. They make great music, I liked the first album ALL OVER THE PLACE really their best songwriting in my opinion. Love them ❤️
As a fan of The Bangles (soundtrack of my youth) and now of Susanna, thank you for the history. I’ve followed Susanna’s life and she is happy, successful (just published her first novel) and a very lovely (physically and otherwise) person. I appreciate your video! ♥️
Truly the best female band ever. Many top ten hits. They couldnt handle Susanas stardom but they all could sing
GREAT 4 part harmonies! Broke up in 1989 back together 10 years later..
And there’s the Action Skulls! A formidable musical project combining the many talents of Vicki Peterson (by the way, my cousin), her husband, John Cowsill and Bill Mumy, actor/multi-instrumentalist.
A lot of great bands that branched off from the members. Action Skulls, Continental Drifters (Vicki) Sid and Sue (Susanna Hoffs/Matthew Sweet) Blood on the Saddle, Medicine (Annette) Early Runaways, Crash Wisdom (Micki)
Prince had a thing for Sue Hoffs, and wrote 'Manic Monday' for her. All of this has come out after his death, but many people, including the Bangles, already knew it.
Umm, no. Manic Monday was originally written for Vanity, but he held it back. He passed it along to the Bangles after seeing "Hero Takes a Fall"
I saw them as an opening act at the now defunct Kabuki Theater in San Francisco in November 1982. It was one of their last concerts they were called “The Bangs”.

Excellent rundown of a fabulously different group!
Love the Bangles and especially Manic Monday, the arrangement and sound in that song is amazing and the Bangles did other great sounding songs.
Thanks for this, keep up the good work and great narration!
They have us such great music, I wish they could have had as much fun making it as we did listening to it.
It does sound like a lot of stress and chaos.
When I first saw the group I felt Suzaana Hoffs was the best looking woman in the world. Mr. X
I saw the Bangles back in 1983 at the Concert Factory (formerly the Cuckoo's Nest) in Costa Mesa. They were so f🐰cking good I didn't even notice at first how adorable they were. They played and sang beautifully, with tight harmonies and backing vocals.
They had it all, except for, it seems, songwriting. They took a path others had succeeded with, recording a Prince song, and got their 15+ minutes. There was a feeling that they'd sold out, reinforced by the follow up to "Manic Monday", a thoroughly disposable novelty dance number, "Walk Like an Egyptian".
They did ok, but they shined brightest when Annette was still the bass player, nothing against her replacement.
Thank you for such a great video! Always loved them since the 80’s. I still listen to their albums. Those harmonies and the 60’s vibe is timeless. I remember having tickets for their Australian show and they broke up. I still have the ticket in my drawer in my bedroom at my parent’s place.
I was over in the Philippines when 'Eternal Flame' came out.
I was at breakfast one day and the locals were all gathered around the jukebox just playing it over and over and over again. Beautiful song, but I felt like wrecking that jukebox, I was so sick of hearing it...😁😁
Saw them open for English Beat at the Hollywood Palladium in '83. The Bangles were fantastic! I love their cover of "Live".
