- In this video, excellent play at the senior level. Just goes to show having a solid understanding of the game and having all the shots are keys to being successful no matter a player's age.

One of my favorites so far. Love to see higher level play like this!
Yes! They are very good. Thanks for watching.
Again, nice to see good players on your channel, Rory. That was fun to watch.
(Other than your distaste for lobs) your commentary was excellent, too.
Thanks for the very nice compliment and thanks for watching.
Rory - those players could really play. That may be the best video I've watched. Was a very interesting match to watch unfold. The lady on the winning team was extremely good in nearly all aspects of the game. I would think she is a 5.0 player? It also looks like the guy in red on the losing team is also around a 5.0 player. Impressive all around. Great video.
Thanks so much! I'm not sure how they're rated. But, it's up there,
Great play! Love to see this level in my age group. Thanks for the breakdown.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
Amazing game! So impressed with this play.
I was too! Thanks for watching.
Lila Rawlings and Patrick Cote vs Brad Anderson and Kristi Dorman, all approximately 5.x level DUPR rated (at the time I looked it up). Neither of these teams metal'd in this event, but they all played well from what I could see. This was the AARP Champions Pro Mixed Doubles event.
Thanks so much for the information. If they didn't medal, the teams that beat them must have been really, really good. Thanks for watching.
theres no way in hell the woman in black is 5.x level. she looked completely out of place vs these 5s. she played like a 4.5 at best
@@pickleballpick-apart9787 Yeah I'd love to watch the one where they lost. Would have been a battle Royale.
Really helpful to see some of the shots they chose to execute. Excellent analysis, Rory.
Thanks very much. I really appreciate it.
This was very enjoyable to watch. Thank you
Great! Thanks for watching.
Very good match to watch. Thanks Rory for the breakdowns.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
Great video!. Watched twice already. Your analysis helped to learn. Thanks Rory.
Awesome. I'm glad it's helping you. Thanks for watching.
great video, maybe it's the best that I have seen you post. Now at 72. I thought my speed would carry me against older people? what you run into out there are people over 60 that played collegiate tennis, played tennis for 30 YEARS, and started playing pickelball for 7 YEARS. They have their shots groomed, pericise, and wired. They are the 5.0+ players we see out there. you can not stay with them with a year or two of pickelball under your belt.
Yes. It's difficult to do. But, fun trying. It only makes players like us want to get better.
Good players. Good change of strategy. Excellent analysis.
Thanks for the nice compliment and thanks for watching.
Rory, I've watched a lot of your posted videos and this is the first time I remember that you have been absolutely amazed at a shot. That ATP was gold. Maybe you've had the same reaction to a Mark Narpotovich shot but I don't recall another one.
That's because I rarely make one!!!
crazy good
Yes. Very good. Thanks.
Soooo cool my friend 💖💛🧡💖❤💝
Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching.
Really good play!
I think so! Thanks for watching.
Great backhand ATP.
That was the best shot of the whole match. Thanks for watching.
Very high level player. Guy in red was the best player but he rarely got the ball!
That happens in tournaments. Sometimes the ball is kept away from the better player on the team. Thanks for watching.
@@pickleballpick-apart9787 Oh yes to be honest Im fairly competitive and even in rec play I will target a weaker player. Not that bad but I always lean towards their side.
Truley very good players. WOW
Thanks! I appreciate you watching.
Top drawer pickleball!
I think so. Thanks for watching.
Excellent cross-court dinking there, a lot of small skills on display here that often get overlooked. I think all 4 players just need to make some refinements to their existing game and they will look much better.
Yes, they are very good. Best of luck in the tournament in April.
A higher ball to the far team is in the sun. Lobs may not be a bad option as evident by the missed overhead at 14:59. Nevertheless, great play by both teams.
Yes it was. Thanks for watching.
I am 77 what age are you considered a senior. Not enough tournaments for over 75
Well I was going by what AARP considers a senior. 50 plus. But, I think of a senior as more my age, 60 plus. Thanks for watching.
Love the womans back hand cross court dink she must have gotten 4 points on that shot.
Yes, it was very good. I'm assuming she's a tennis player. Thanks for watching.
The important thing to remember is you will lose a dinking rally by giving your opponent an attackable ball. Don't do that!!!
If you watch pro matches, most dinking is cross court and with the ladies, sometimes 30+ times before a speed-up. Pros have the patience to wait for a speed-up opportunity. As Rory pointed out in the video, the lady on the winning team attempted a speed-up when the ball was below her knees. That didn't end well.
With a cross-court dink, the ball can cross the net high and still be unreachable for a return volley.
If you dink straight across the net and you're a little high, that ball is most likely coming back at you with a vengeance.
Did you notice it looked like the team with the lady in grey was giving hand signals behind their backs for their serves?
Yes. A hand signal with an open hand means they are going to stack. That means the player returning the ball is going to run to the other side of the court and the player at the NVZ is going to move over. Thanks for watching.
Excellent play for sure.
Looks to me like these players are not that old. 45-55 maybe?
I'm not sure of their age. I know AARP junk mail starts hitting the mailbox when a person turns 50. Thanks for watching.
Do you consider all lobs bad? Is there a time and place for lobs?
I don't. I think a defensive lob is okay if that's the only option. I play outdoors a lot. If the wind is even 5 mph, it can affect a lob.
When playing outside, I will occasionally lob into the wind as it is easier to keep the ball in. I have the advantage. Most opponents, if they can get to it, will try to hit the ball out of the air and the tailwind will often carry the ball long.
Lobbing with a tailwind often doesn't end well. I have the disadvantage as the lob is often carried out by the wind and if my opponent gets to it and hits it out of the air, the headwind will help keep their ball in.
IMO, there are 2 times to lob
The 1st is defensive. A shot takes you way out of position and you need time to get back in a defensive position. The lob gives you that time.
The 2nd is offensive from the NVZ. Lob over their non-dominant side. Another technique is to lob over the better opponent, if in front of you, as he/she has to turn more before chasing the ball. The smart play is for the other player to turn and run (Call Switch) as the turn is less.
You are not trying to win the rally with a lob. You are moving your opponent back on the court. Now you have the advantage.
I see players lob from back in the court. That makes no sense to me.
the "seniors" I've played with can't move like this :)
Some can't. These players are really good.
I enjoy your direction of various abilities etc, but I have to disagree with your comment regarding lobs. Lobs are becoming a very strategic shot, both offensive and defensive, try them when you have your opponent off balance or weighted towards the net while dinking, or a smash return etc. Pros and our club players 4.0 and above implement these technics regularly, and with good results. 😊
Well....I'm working on a video right now and I point out how lobs fail more often than they work. And, they fail for three reasons. I'm just going to have to disagree. The only time I hit a lob is when I get a return of serve hit deep to me and I cannot hit a third shot drop and know if I hit a third shot drive it's not going to be effective. It's okay to disagree. Thanks for watching.
@@pickleballpick-apart9787 I like your videos….. but….. your recommendations are often contrary to high level and pro player lead seminars I’ve attended. Lobs are said to be one of the major trends in the game, and blindly heading to the NV line is far less important than moving there strategically. But do enjoy the format.
I have been defending the lob for a long time with Rory but in reality I hate the trend. When lobs fail in his videos they are usually because the players are not good at it and use it at weird times. I am 60 years old with bad knees and can compensate for almost everything except a well placed lob. If it were practical I would outlaw lobs except from about 5 feet from the service line which would include the area Rory is talking about in his response. In other words defensive lobs rather than offensive. I know it is not practical though.
I play in the 3.5 70s in tournaments and lobs are more frequent than dinking.
I agree that his disdain for lobs has no context.. if a shot is practiced then it could be perfected. In tournament play, most anything goes, so lobbing against movement challenged; height challenged; overhead challenged players is a solid tactic.
What are their ages?
It's AARP. So they are over 50. Thanks for watching.
The lady with the partner in the red shirt is short so to me a shallow lob over her as she is in transition space is winner. Also red shirt poaching should be dealt with via passing shots to that open corner like final shot …
That was a good passing shot. I think I'll skip the lob attempts. Thanks for watching.
They certainly appear to be "young" seniors.
Agreed, the woman in gray top does not move like most seniors, those of us in our 60's and 70's. And beleive me there is a huge difference between 50s and 60s. 😮
Well maybe they're not senior but they're over 50 because to be an AARP member you have to be. Thanks for watching.
Need a new “Seniors “ category- “Senior Seniors “. 😅 BTW really enjoy your work.
@@glennmccullough572 there is a category called Super Seniors for over 60+
From DUPR
Winners
Kristi Dorman Age 54 5.24
Brad Anderson Age 57 5.01
Patrick Cote Age 49 5.54
Lila Rawlings age 56 5.09
These players are not 5.0 players they are very good 3.5 players except as Rory said the female playing with
The guy in red was the weakest of all 4 players . 5.0 players to comment about one of the commenters is not
True here , they are very good senior players , I would say again very strong 3.5 players . It was a good game
To watch the 2 players opposite to the red guy were stronger than the other side . Just a good game to watch.
Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching.
Watch some of the 3.5 matches on you -tube. No way are these players 3.5. Skills on display are better than any 3.5 video I've seen. Their ability to reset shots back into the kitchen is simply suberb.
🤌
Thanks for watching.
if they're gonna hit a drive, maybe they should hit it to the woman....because we all know women can't return...smh
😊
