I’ve played for 9 yrs, coached for almost as long,, and got certified 2 years ago. This is one of the best videos I’ve seen. It covers everything I teach and I will recommend it to my students for a refresher. Well done!
You guys are the best I've seen in the Pb tips space--explanations are simple and succinct. Great job gentlemen!!! Keep the outstanding content rolling!!
I’ve watched many pb videos from many great players. Your way of teaching is the best I’ve seen for several reasons. Most noticeable is that you explain well, very clear on the details, and don’t use “coach speak”. Hard to describe, but some use confusing and sometimes ambiguous words or statements. So nice to hear what you are saying, and be confident that I know what you mean. THANKYOU!!
Thinking of your paddle height as inverse to your distance from the kitchen is super helpful! My ready position has gotten a lot better lately, but this tip really clarifies some difficulties I've had. Great video!
These were very helpful refreshers, they give me more context on things I did know, and I liked the part where you mentioned staying low, and staying out of the court after serving.
1st sign- still working on this with my members at the end of season 3. It is about being present in the game and putting yourself in position to hit whatever 3rd you want to. Floppy wrist is a great key as well! This is a great video for people wanting to elevate their game especially those wanting to improve from 3.5 to 4.0 and beyond!
interesting advice on the dinks about locking the wrist. In an effort to have achieve soft hands, my wrist is noticeably loose. I didn't realize that this could be a reason my dinks are so attackable...
Good Stuff...specifically the overhead shot. Coming from a racquetball background, I never used an overhead shot. And when playing new players with tennis background I notice they have this overhead shot down. Thanks, demonstrating the technical breakdown of this shot, I now know what to work on step by step. : )
This is an amateur thing, but often my partners don't wait for me and serve as soon as they get the ball. Sometimes I need a five second breather, sometimes I just got back from fetching a ball that rolled away and need to get set, but they are already hitting their serve without making sure I am ready to go. Both partners need to check on each other. I've even had to call back partners that went up to the kitchen line while I am serving, forgetting what they are doing.
1. When you are not getting any endorsements. 2. When no one is asking you to use their equipment. 3. When you can't find a doubles partner to save your life. 4. When you go to venues and they ask you for money to play. 5. Yearly earnings statements ! 🤣
If anyone doing local open play notices your team mate never leaves the baseline it’s usually because you’re handing the opposing team everything on a platter. They’re just too nice to say anything. Try and go for deep returns and try and take risks at the net it’s the only way to get better. Beginner usually fail to see the concept of loosing on your own shot even if it’s in.
Just wanna add one thing to the first item, when you're serving, make sure your partner is ready and engaged before you serve. I absolutely hate it when my partner rushes and serves the ball before i get to position. Especially when i'm the one who ran up to grab the ball and throw it to him.
On the dinks... I think it was Collin Johns who came up with the "1+2=3" dink equation. If your opponent hits a 1 (push dink), you answer with a 2 (aggressive dink). You shouldn't answer a 1 with a 1 nor a 2 with a 2. 1+2 or 2+1 = 3.
I have trouble putting both hands above my head for a downward smash. My center of gravity goes all wonky. I fear my smashes will always be relatively weak.
Some of my best “workout” pickleball days, where my partner is getting most the play. I shade move and prepare. Be ready for that one shot you get and put it away.
I played for the first time today. I stand outside the corner when my teammate is serving. Not sure if I’m doing it right, but I’ve got myself a good 90 degree angle going over there.
Nearly 100% of the time when I am jogging forward and make a lazy play not split stepping I miss the shot or get saved by the other team. When you put in the effort you get results. Split step, bend your knees..
I noticed when I stand far back when my partner is serving the person returning the ball will drop it way in front of me and I can’t run up in time to get it.
Here is the best advice - stop taking advice from old timers or people that have played for a long time. The game is changing rapidly from the snooze dink rallys of years past and turning more into power and open play. And thats good, because dinking is what gives pickleball a bad name. Dont believe me? Just look at all the paddles and equipment coming to market- almost all are built for power and speed.
No. Watch the pros play. They may hit a 3rd shot drive, but that rarely ends the point. The game is still played from the NVZ line. Dinking will always be an important part of the game. Overpowering weaker players might work. But against better players drives aren’t effective. The power of the game comes at the net in speed ups. If you can’t maintain that “boring” dink game till you get a mistake, you’ll not be that good.
The paddles are changing the game? That comment is for people who look at their paddles when they miss a shot. Much of the game is determined by body mechanics and the size of the court and net height and position on the court.
Well since I don’t get paid to play I will always be an amateur. And have no ambition to be a pro. I want to improve but I would say a more accurate description is novice not amateur. As until recently ALL Olympic athletes and all NCAA athletes are amateurs at their sport. PRO vs amateur in sports is ONLY do you play and not get paid or play for money.
So this is targeted at people who believe they are possibly professional pickleball players but are probably wrong? That seems a very small set. Most people by definition are amateurs. I guess I'll fix these five problems and join the pro tour!
I'm sorry, but you make Amateur seem like a dirty word. Try saying inexperienced or beginner. I have been a coach for 40 years and have found vocabulary important. I have played some very good non professional players, which is the definition of amateur.
5 Signs You're an Amateur Pickleball Player - 1. you play pickleball. 2. you are a young person that plays Pickleball, taking a great activity that the elderly did to stay fit away from them. 3. did I mention you play Pickleball. there's no more, this was a great activity for the elderly and it has been totally hijacked from them by, stupid punks that cant play real sports.
Ok few things here, dinking playing up is not the way to play it’s wrong, I see so many people play up by net the no volley zone, u have so little time to react and very little time if it’s a speed up shot game, the fast hands battle and there is a good chance to get hit by the ball then you lose, so the real way to play is back, way back base line, singles doubles I don’t care, me or me and my teammate ever sense we understood the game, we have never lost, but then yet again we never played any pro matches, that is r only con but we have played at so many indoor outdoor places, but so you want to play back, because you can hit power shots, spin shots wicked spin and me and him have mastered every single spin shot, it’s better safer more fun, and we’re goin to blast that ball at you, not to be mean but to teach you, not to play up and your in the strike zone, so if we hit u it’s your own fault and we will blast it at u any which way of wicked spin, at you or down the middle or down the line like on the edges line where it’s close to out but it’s not, just a very accurate shot. Or we will just lob over your head. Ok now let’s talk about more why playing up is bad ok, let’s say your playing up right, few things to happen, I or me or my teammate hit a wicked spin shot at u, doesn’t matter what spin shot we give you, your gonna hit it out of the air because your playing up, so hitting balls out of the air is so random chaotic don’t have much control, then what u would have if the ball bounces, anyways um so u hit it out of the air, the ball will either go into the net after u hit it or u hit a lucky drop shot I or my buddy run up to get it, we lob over your head, then u run back get it, then we drop shot then power shot wicked spin any which way then power shot then drop shot then lob over your head then lob drop shot power shot, see your done, or u might miss the ball it curved on u, maybe u get that lucky shot where the ball goes in but bounce way out wide and I’m or my buddy will be like great perfect thank you and me or my buddy r gonna hit a atp around the net shot and either we get it the point or u get it back, then we’re back to power shot wicked spin drop shot lob over your head, or playing up u can hit a spike shot at us perfect, power for power, ours will be better stronger more accurate more spin, playing back better position for u and your buddy, better ball angles, more time to react, but if your just playing casual it does not matter but if your playing serious playing back better in every way.

Well done!
Lol please
I think it is fairly safe to say that since I will never be compensated to play pickleball means I will always be an amateur
that's just sad ... certified, wow, guess I'd have to be pretty inebriated to make that statement online or aloud ... smdh
Has pickleball been around 9 years?
@ It was invented in the 1960s.

Always played paddle sports, but just started pickleball. I'm 70 and want to improve my game. Got lots of tips from your video. Thanks!

Thanks for all the good tips and tricks. Slowly working my way to an intermediate level.
Thanks. What’s the grey and black SLK paddle?

Really good tips! Will be implementing more in my game by being more conscious about it!

This is an excellent video. Agree with all of these.
Does Selkirk sell shirts without spilled paint on them?

Good analysis. I esp. liked points 3 and 5, dinking and overhead smashes.

If your opponent hits a 1 (push dink), you answer with a 2 (aggressive dink).
You shouldn't answer a 1 with a 1 nor a 2 with a 2. 1+2 or 2+1 = 3.

The information in your video is excellent. The "foreground" music in your video is needless and annoying.

I am new to your channel. Excellent video
Lots of great tips - I'll always be an amateur, since I don't have the patience for extended patty cake. 😅

Fantastic video 🙌🙌
Love the tips on the overhead shot
I honestly thought I saw Trevor Wallace on the thumbnail😂😂
good motions an lessons
I know I’m an amateur. I’m not getting paid to play……yet.
good tips
Is that striped??
You know someone is an amateur when they spell amateur wrong (point #2) 😂. Oops. Good tips though
Whoops! Haha
You can also point your non-dominant elbow to a high ball for an overhead so you don’t look like a goof. 😂
I noticed when I stand far back when my partner is serving the person returning the ball will drop it way in front of me and I can’t run up in time to get it.
What I understood is you stay back while they are serving but then you can move forward
@@jenalva8nah have to wait for the bounce first
Yeah way easier to go forwards then back

Dumbest comment yet...the comment should say don't listen, watch or take the advice from this podcast
Your evidence is how paddles are marketed? Marketing and sales is where you get your information about sports?
The paddles are changing the game? That comment is for people who look at their paddles when they miss a shot. Much of the game is determined by body mechanics and the size of the court and net height and position on the court.
best advice is to be fluid. players are too afraid to shoot down the line. the game is literally tennis, its not hard
I'm an amatuer for sho!
Making a simple game look more complicated than it is
How about referring to these corrections as common mistakes rather than laziness. Many beginners are simply overwhelmed and far from lazy.

Sign that you're an amateur video poster: 1). Inconsistent spelling: Amateur, Amature
So this is targeted at people who believe they are possibly professional pickleball players but are probably wrong? That seems a very small set. Most people by definition are amateurs. I guess I'll fix these five problems and join the pro tour!
Ya you for sure never want to ever listen to people who know what they are talking about you should always listen to dumb people in the comments
That first statement is dishonest. Behind the line wouldn't matter for a tennis player. Our footwork is always better.
lmao. is this how normies view the stonk market? holy shit. Just spike the ball every opportunity.
Don’t want to play like a pro. Play several times a week for exercise and interacting with neighbors and friends. We play for fun and a good time.
