  • This video shows how I upgraded an ipe deck by replacing the balusters with stainless steel cables (wire rope). I also added integrated LED lighting in the posts. Custom top rails were fabricated from the original wood to create new hand rails that will not sag. The video also shows how lighting is attached to all posts (including the corner posts).

    Brian, how far apart did you happen to run your cable in between each post. I have 7ft between mine.

    • @brianweekley5700
      @brianweekley5700  2 года назад

      The maximum span between posts is 6 feet on my deck. The overall cable length is about 21 feet on the longest side. The cable is only attached at the end posts and just runs through holes in the intermediate posts.

    • @brianweekley5700
      @brianweekley5700  2 года назад

      @@ptcclatlptcclatl1683 The spacing between posts is not 21 feet-it’s less than 6 feet. The spacing between the wires is sufficient to meet the 4” deflection requirement.

    Just discovered your channel !! I subscribed because I like what you do !!! Regarding Ipe wood, it is sad that retailers always brag about the always present possibility you can ''bring back'' a grey/weathered ipe patio to the appearance of newly installed Ipe wood by just lightly sanding it and cleaning and re-oiling it....I find that impossible...It will always remain darker in the future compared to newly installled ipe wood...Also, as a result, it IS NOT a maintenance free wood if you want to preserve a nice finish and appearance . Here in Montreal, I need to clean and re-oil it once a year. You probably noticed a huge difference between horizontally and vertically installed planks !! The latter really do not grey as much and retain much of their initial beauty!!!

      Thank you! You are absolutely correct. Ipe is very hard to keep its rich color-especially in direct sunlight. Sanding and a brightener are helpful. We also found that if you oil too much or don’t thoroughly wipe off the excess oil it will blacken faster. Best to power wash, apply brightener (oxalic acid) with lots of elbow grease each Spring followed by a single coat of oil (with UV protection). It is maintenance free if you like the gray color!

    Beautiful! How long did the oil coating last? Would you re-coat again ...or is it too much work if it needs to be done every year?

      I have over 1500 sqft of grey Ipe and it seems daunting to oil it even just once ...

      The deck looked fabulous when it was done. However, our deck gets a lot of sun and looked terrible by the end of the summer. It is a lot of work keeping it looking good. There is definitely something said for letting it just turn grey! However, we have another ipe porch on the front of the house that does not get sun. That one still looks super after several years now. On our next house, we're planning to pour a stamped concrete patio to avoid wood deck maintenance altogether (LOL)! The main purpose of the video was more about installing the cables, lights, and fixing the sagging railing. I would do that again in an instant--a great improvement for sure. Thanks for the question.

      @@brianweekley5700 thanks for that info! Just what I was thinking, that maintenance to keep it oiled is a big commitment if exposed to harsh conditions. I’m up in Seattle and the relentless winter rains do a number on wood. So other than a gentle power washing in spring, I think I’ll forgo the oiling!
      Yes, the wire railing is how I found your excellent video. My baluster railing is sad...made from cedar but pained white with latex paint, which to me seems impossible to remove completely..so endless horrible peeling. It’s huge and I don’t know what to do with it, and thought wire too. It’s less than 30” from ground, so maybe just removing it would work. But then I’m afraid I’d be inviting deer up on it eating my potted plants, as they are all over the place here.
      A concrete or stone patio does seem attractive to me too. Thanks again!

      Thank you. I purchased the 1/8”, 1x19 cable and 1/8” threaded lag screws on eBay. If you search, you should find many options easily. Make sure they are 316 stainless and the lag screws are sets of both right and left pairs (many ads are one thread only). Don’t cheap out on the crimper, you absolutely need the hardened dies to crimp the stainless steel (e.g., Muzata). I’m very happy with how my railing came out and it was a very affordable approach. In my opinion, much cleaner look than using turnbuckles. Good luck with your project!

I only have eight LED lights and the wiring is 18 gauge, low voltage wiring for exterior use (landscape wiring).
