I used to live not too far from the original Beau Jo's Pizza in Idaho Springs, Colorado. This pie is truly, madly, deeply delicious. What to do with all that crust? It's dessert. They bring you a bottle of warm honey to squeeze on the crust you left behind because you were full. Oh, damn...it's delicious with honey. I guess I'll just explode and die then, at least I'll die happy!

I don't know if the British definition for "smother" is different. I never saw the man smother his face on the pizza. His forehead, nose, eyes and beard (all parts of the face) were clean at all times.
Brit hear, clearly they are talking about him shoving his face in it, there is no difference between the word in US/UK.
