When we're not working on cars, we're watching the Grand Tour!
amzn.to/3qXghY4
You guys have so much patience working on these day after day. The N54 is a total nightmare when it wants to be
Ahhhh I’ll tell you what they are great character building machines lol. I think I was more bummed about the delay for canbus learning.
@@ZeroTo60Tube they certainly teach you about patience and engineering weaknesses!
in this case, nothing to have with N54.
Hey man! This looks exactly like stuck relay for immobiliser fault. I had it twice and always disconnecting battery solved the issue. Funny that there are wired faults like that which can be caused by different things. Fun to troubleshoot and fix ... or is it?
For more information on the screen, I installed an Android headunit and installed Torque Pro (and Bimmerlink) and configured my own display.... cheap option, but is functional IMO.
He wants it on the dash and at a high resolution I'd imagine.
Snow is correct. I want it to responsive enough to shift a high power car at the perfect time. So refresh rate is super important.
This video is great! I'm trying to dive into the canbus and understand why a fault takes out so much stuff. I'm N54 rwd swapping a 328xi wagon in the states. I've swapped dxc to dsc modules and repinned the connector but it's still not happy. Radio dead, steering controls dead, and all the faults on the display. I can get inpa to connect but not ncsexpert. And I get errors on dsc communication and can't calibrate the pump. Just saying I appreciate you doing all the legwork on these for us guys that are weekend warriors.
I was doing an Audi timing chain at work. put almost 10 hours of work into the car no misfires before I did the work just timing codes. I started up and it fucking misfires, my immediate thought is that I royally fucked something up. It ended up being an ignition coil that failed while I was doing the job
always test the basic shit first!!!
Bingo!
Had a similar issue when I was having my car tuned on a flat battery , the Dyno tuner had to reflash the trans software back into it , essentially my CAS wasn't recognizing my transmission
I will for sure be interest on can vídeos, I am building my bench setup and using arduino to manipulating can signals. Still learning, no one’s post this type of info for free on internet. I find out that using for example perfect tollbox you can sent can messages to cluster, so turn out to be easy to decode can messages when you know what you are searching.
Wow quite the coincidence... I’m working on running canbus controlled temp gauges and oil pressure display! My advice, get familiar with arduinos, makes it super easy once you figure it out. Goodluck!
Oh that's a bummer guys. Luckily enough you have a spare parts car! Good luck. Dutch regards, Nico.
Feel your pain. Was wondering why the delay in daily videos. Stay positive. Love your videos, always learn something 👍🏻
Haaha ahhhh I’m really enjoying learning about the canbus. Will share more when I actually know what I’m talking about.
My car Just did the same thing today. I pulled into the store parked. Came back and no start. Luckily I’m a manual transmission so I was able to push start it. I bought a new stater at the auto parts for now hoping this is the problem. Gonna install it tomorrow. Thanks for the video 👍🏽
Did it work?
@@natanaelflores7290 yes , it was the starter gone bad after 140k miles
Oh my god, such a headache 😱 you still seem to stay positive about it, I would have put the whole thing in the bin 😂 looks bloody hot when you were doing this too!
So exact same battery went dead but on I drive it says trans failure gear may be accessed without brake and park may not be available car was fine before battery died but in this time has developed a parasitic drain which will kill a ‘new ‘ battery in twenty minutes or so would you recommend xHP tool 32 glad I’m not the only one with this issue your videos always inspiring and insightful keep up the good work
See if you can access the trans with xhp if you have it. Do a flash, cos its quick and easy. Then re-code with NCS expert. xHP does block standard tools. which can be tricky. Let me know how you go?
Exact same codes and same issue. Checked ground strap, checked relay, checked battery pyro, checked the power line to starter, tapped starter and it's still dead. Looking like starter just died all of a sudden.
It's happened before to another RUclips Bimmerbarn. Mine died right after I filled up at the pump and it didn't start no warning.
Update. It was the starter that rear bolt is a pain in the arse.
Not sure if you remember me asking about my e90 n52? Well I had changed a fuel ventilation breather valve just under the throttle body electrical junction box. And I also changed the maf. And after I did that I got a misfire in cylinder 5. So I tested the battery after the car wasn’t starting. Changed out the battery for a better Ah70 AGM. from a non AGM. So had to figure what my Ah was for the new battery. Figured it out registered it with protools. Now I’m getting a much better crank.
So. Car wasn’t turning on with new battery went back and checked my coil packs and plugs. Come to find ice yes yes in between cylinder5-6. That’s cause I deleted my cowl thinking I was cool. Guys if you live where there’s weather and cold don’t delete the cowl with out sourcing an M3 cowl. So now that I figured out that the ground between 5-6 was barred under ice.
What could have I fried by that ground being under water or frozen. Cause I wanna say that I probably started getting that misfire cause that ground was wet or frozen. And once the car wormed up if melted the ice between em and shorted out something.
Any hints or clues or ideas? Please guys let me know if there’s any where you would start from?
I’m sorry dude I really can’t comment with any experience on this one.
@@ZeroTo60Tube all good. I’m gonna start by checking fuses and go from there.
Just happened to me yesterday, no crank no start, just thank your luck u dont have a dct like me had to jack the car up to unlock the gearbox and roll it out of a tight car park
Love these vids! Always so helpful to see how you diagnose issues.
On another note I occasionally get a 2FDB - Crankshaft sensor, signal: Not plausible on my MHD N54 Shadow code - all drives fine any ideas?
I havent personally experienced that code. But scott has. It was as simple as the crank sensor coming to the end of its life. Its located just under the start motor. But if a pain to get to, but cheap ish.
I've been watching you guys for a long time and I have to say it's totally put me off buying a BMW again lol, what a faff they can be!
Hahaha, this was my fault flattening the battery. But man they test your patience that’s for suee
7 volts on an AGM? It's not gonna charge. You have to parallel charge it with a good battery or replace. Usually if the starter is bad the key fob will get stuck in the ignition.
I threw the mac daddy 130amp power supply on it for a about 10 mins, then the normal charger come to life.
I keep meaning to pickup one of those USB cigarette lighter adapters with the built in voltage display, with 2 project cars on the drive and a 535d as a daily it would be handy and probably avoid this kind of issue, I've killed batteries before letting them get too low for extended periods of time.
Dude this was a brilliant idea. I read it yesterday then went and ordered one and forgot to reply! Thank you!
@@ZeroTo60Tube Let us know how you get on with it and which one you bought, been looking and a lot of them have bad reviews so not sure which one to buy...
CA plays up when my battery wasn't charging. symptom looks like there is no CA at all. about 500km later it was back to normal.
I have had that too. Its like the car starts to disable functions when it thinks the battery charge is low.
It's strange on these cars that often when a part goes faulty it's when you are working on something else or is caused by something that seems to be something else (If that makes sense lol). Eg: replacing Injectors, coils and plugs and the HPFP goes out without my knowing it and then I search for days thinking it was something I must have done to cause the problem but it was that the HPFP died while I was replacing a few parts. Then replacing battery that was no good and then it starts and drives me from the shop right after. But when I go to try it an hour later it only fires for one round but no start. I think it must be fuel pump but go into erase the chassis codes and it was actually the immobilizer even though it let me drive home earlier. Hmmmm. Weird.
Did you have to reflash XHp after recoding transmission
no
I recently bricked my FRM module by disconnecting and connecting my battery back up. Similar pain!
You can repair those! Mind you the tool is expensive.
@@ZeroTo60Tube yes, I looked into it. I used a service that repaired it for me and it all worked out in the end !
I have a similar issue on my other N54 car I have a 08 335i e92 with ccc idrive I did a heater core and while doing it the battery died (obviously disconnected) when I put the battery back on not knowing it was under 10v the car would not key on. Got a new battery on the car it keys on but no idrive no comfort access no interior power whatsoever but the car starts??? I’ve sent the car to the stealership which they could find nothing wrong with the car I’ve since sent out the dme and cas to ecu pro to have them tested and they came back great. I’m at a loss mates please give me ideas on what to do next I have been through the fuse box and triple checked everything. I have pro tool but I cannot connect to the obd port? Super weird
Hmmmmmm wonder if something is blocking the canbus all together
@@ZeroTo60Tube what I’m thinking I honestly have never used insta to even start that kind of diagnostic
@@ZeroTo60Tube so I unhooked and reconnected everything and actually got some codes on being terminal 15, mind if I email you to see what you think?
@@anthonycollings5845 unfortunately can't do one on one help. I send around 400-500 messages a day as it. The zeroto60 memebers take my priority. However if i still spend way too much time every day on comments, which help the channel and make the info public, so feel free to ask anything here and i will get back to you when i can. However again i think you NEED to get ista and proper diagnostics on the car. You are fighting an uphill battle on these cars if you dont have ista.
What if you have a 6speed
my setup with the lamik controller is using maxxecu sport standalone ecu. i still have to figure out how it all works with canbus as well. its fully integrated but i have no clue how it actually works lol.
Maxxecu have done some great work with bmw canbus intergration. Better than any other aftermarket ecu.
Is yours getting closer to driving yet?
@@ZeroTo60Tube yeah its close, im wiring maxxecu and my tcu should be here from poland any day now. i just sent lamik a 5k rpm stal converter for his car so we should all be rollin real soon!
@@ZeroTo60Tube im also waiting for seems legit garage to finish my custom axles, 8.8 and i need to mount the trans to the car again and measure for driveline.. i had the car driving on HTG standalone tcu but it sucked and i returned it , it was worth waiting another few months as lamik tcu actually works lol.
@@ZeroTo60Tube i wish you guys werent SO far away, im in southern california and would love to have you guys over if you are ever in the area! dont forget to hit me up
@@Mp-jw1qg Appreciate that man, i haven't had time off since 2018, so keen to get out and visit the states and UK again. So many people to meet from this madness that is youtube.
I feel your pain. The exact same thing happened to me yesterday at the car wash. Had the rig towed home to the shed and I have a feeling my Saturday morning will be starter r&r. Anyone know a good source for a VM with ISTA+ installed?
I have had a laptop setup for me. Which really hurt me when things play up. I did set up the tools last year as a bit of an experienemt using a forum guide. It showed me a lot about how it all works.
@@ZeroTo60Tube Excellent point... it can be helpful to know where the skeletons are buried!
Yep, that's way over my head. I understand what you are doing but that's a lot of info to keep straight in the ole knoggin.
Don’t worry it used to go over my head too. It all takes a while to understand what’s going on inside these things
Is not easier to use the Pico scope and look at the actual signals and a breaker box?
Probably easier. But I need this tool to start prototyping what I want to do. Finally version will like be raspberry pi based. Just need to decide about 200-300 can bus IDs and work out the values from the hex data…..
@@ZeroTo60Tube decoding canbus is a 10 carton of beer effort over 3 months.
Beer? I was looking for wholesale prices on expensive white powders after the first week of trying to do it.
I don't even own a BMW lol but that was an awesome vid mate👌
Did the trans coding come back after u got the car started
I got it back with ncs. But once it was back that’s when the error in the cas appeared.
Hey bud maybe you can help me with some of your knowledge, my 335i e90 just wouldn't start 1 day and my battery was at 12volts and when I pushed the start button you can hear the fuel kick on but it just doesn't start, do you think it's a bad starter? Car was running great no problems before this, HELP ME!
That’ll be the earth strap from starter to chassis 👍
Just had to be same thing
@@neilgardiner7601 can you explain? What do I have to do?
You can run a thick jumper cable from the ground bolt on the right side to the oil filter housing bolt to bypass the ground wire and ground the engine. If it starts, it's your ground cable (intake side underneath the car)
Other things to check
The big black relay in the glovebox fuses.
The +ve terminal pyrotechnic which can blow
The thick red B+ cable running from the +ve jumper terminal block to the starter for any breaks or corrosion.
@@namsu2403 thanks bud for the knowledge, I wish we could talk so I could get a better understanding of things, I'm gonna take it apart tomorrow so hopefully I can figure it out. Thanks again my friend
Check fault codes first. Could be the same as this car. Could be the earth strap like suggested above. Keep us updated.
I went to send you some beer $ and the gonfund me is closed. Any other way I can help for the states?
Hey mate! Really appreciate that I do. We have just about paid for everything urgent now. But you are the 3rd person to say the same. I might put a donate button on our web store in the near future. The money we make all goes back in and the go fund me has helped us explore some cool new things that’s for suee
Can I reset the JBE using Ista ?
You can clear codes with ista. Winkfp is the closest you’ll get to a reset.
If this is his hobby what does he do for work? Nuclear engineer? Half the stuff goes over my head BY A MILE!
It was a hobby, its more of an obsession at this point.... not healthy either way....lol
I my friend am on this path currently hating my life right now
Man what a nightmare... at least it's sorted now tho.. note to self BMW's are way to over complicated for there own good 🤔
E93?? When did this happen ?? I never miss an episode ! New investment ??
No no, that’s the car my dct came from.
bimmer life.. once they are going its all worth it! lol
I can't say this video was helpful, did you find a fix?
Im pretty sure the video shows the fix.... did you watch it?
BMW's are too hard. We all need psychiatric help.
They definitely make women seem less annoying that’s for sure.
@@ZeroTo60Tube 🤣
I had this same issue with original starter, I turned it on and off many times consecutively to test some coding changes, walked away to do an oil change on my skyline and came back to the button press doing absolutely nothing.
I was lucky enough that my charger was on it so no modules went haywire but I had to buy a new starter still :/
New starter fixed it?
@@ysljay9061 That's correct. My starter just gave up coindicentally while I was doing some coding with ProTool.
I engaged the starter manually by energising the solenoid on it, nothing happened.
Replaced the starter and it fired up right away.
My battery died on my 335i recently and now I’m scared to even touch it
Charge it first. Charge it first!!!!!
