  • 04 SRT4 built by ND Performance with a 41TE 4 speed automatic transaxle. Short driving video demonstrating its proper operation.
This video is quite old, now, having been produced in mid-2016. I still get comments and emails on this car. It has long since been sold, and remains with the person who bought it.
Do I have another? Yes, is the short answer. I converted a 2005 Dodge Neon SE to an SRT4 back in 2006, and enjoyed it in many configurations over the years. As the need for a commuter car came up in early 2020, so I converted it, much like the car in this video. It has been a reliable daily driver ever since. That car will be featured in one of these videos, as it too, will be offered up for sale soon.
The conversion process will not be detailed by me any further than it has been in the comments, and what is below. Your best bet on building your own is to acquire a PT Cruiser turbo as a parts car. However, you will need to do some fabrication on the SRT4 intake manifold, and you will run into some tuning issues with the PCM. 2003 PTGT PCM is setup for a PWM cooling fan. You should use a 2004-05 PTGT PCM in any case, as it will not have some of the torque limitations inside of it. Otherwise, plan on getting tuning from Needless Torque, as Duster360 is aware of how to remove the limitations. You will need to run a second power wire to the PCM connector to power up the automatic side of the PCM. There are kits for the transmission, but as this platform has now aged, the best ones seem to be harder to find. Alto clutches with Kolene steels are getting hard to find. Sonnax valve body kits are a good idea, and you should get their differential pin retainer, if your differential is not already equipped. You will need a neon automatic left side mount, axle. Use a PTGT right side intermediate shaft and SRT4 right axle. You'll have to fabricate the cold side pipe. Wiring you need to read diagrams on.
This is a much better driving setup than people would guess, if done properly. I have more or less moved on from the 2.4L platform cars, and am not available to do a conversion for you, nor offer tuning, parts, etc. If you want one turnkey, be on the lookout for my white 2005 Neon, which will be offered up on SRT Forums and FB marketplace sometime in the near future.

Love this transmission swap. Simple, but different. I'd love to see it on a strip against a stock SRT4. Never gotta let go of the boost.

  • @funtdrv

I have had lots of people ask me what is involved in this swap. There's a lot to it, and it is not for someone without at least some fabrication and electrical skills. Having said that, the formula is fairly straightforward. You'll need:
    1. SRT4/PTGT engine w/SRT4 intake manifold
    2. PT turbo transaxle w/torque converter, flex plate and starter
    3. PT PCM (GT much preferred)
    4. 03+ Neon Automatic left axle
    5. 03+ Neon automatic transaxle mount
    6. Transmission cooler (I got the largest generic one I could from the parts store)
    7. Wiring (options include using the PT transmission wiring and splicing yourself, or sourcing and overlay from Kinnetic Kreations)
    8. Several pieces of 2.5" aluminum tubing, silicone bends, etc for cold side pipe fabrication
    9. Ton of small items like ATF+4, hardware, etc
    10. Automatic shifter, cable, bracket, and brake pedal, if converting from a 5 speed
Bolting the transaxle in is the easy part. Get the shifter, cable and brake pedal done, if your car is a 5 speed. Get those mechanicals done first. Next, figure out how mount your cooler. I mounted mine to the AC condenser, and it fit just perfectly in the sheet metal cutout up front, but I did do some clearancing of the center core support. Intake manifold will need to be pie cut to rotate the throttle body up and away from the transaxle. Mine is almost parallel to the crankshaft. Will need to fabricate the cold side pipe, and it will be extremely tight. I cut a small amount off the intercooler, to move hose forward about 1 inch, which helped a lot. Have to get creative here. After that, wiring. Study the manuals, or buy the kit from Kinnetic. I highly recommend tuning on the PCM from a reputable tuner. For PTGT PCMs, you can use Diablo. For non-GT PCMs, I think the only current option is the Syked tuner.
Can Autostick work? If you're willing to do the wiring and the work needed to make the shifter work, then yes, but you'll have no Autostick display in the cluster.
    FAQ:
Can you use the 40TE from a regular neon? Sure. It will blow up. Maybe not immediately, but it will, and for no net gain vice using the 41TE
Will I do this conversion for you? No. Your only chance on that is if I decide to sell the car I recently completed.
Do I know of any shops that will do this conversion? Not offhand, sorry.
How much power will the automatic take? No one is really sure, but there are several PTGTs in the 400whp running just fine.
    Recommendations:
    1. Rebuild your transaxle while it is out of the car
    2. Install the available differential saver brackets, if yours is not already equipped
    3. Install a shift kit (worth the

Ultra drive FTW. This is actually a very good pairing when you get the right converter. I recently tuned a build that went 9.50’s running one of these; it was an aluminum rod 2.4 on a Gen 2 PTE 6466 peaking 37-38 #’s in a 98 RT chassis. Race weight was around 2300lbs and the thing rolled out HARD. This car was running a really right converter from Sonnax and the 60’ was amazing.

I did build a second one of these cars, and it had refinements from lessons learned on the last car, namely in the area of tuning. I sold that car recently, and you may see a white 2005 SRT-4 automatic running around the Mobile, AL area. With that, I am no longer tuning or building any 2.4L platform cars. For future SRT-4 automatic builds, I recommend @duster360 from Needless Torque Calibrations (www.needlesstorque.com/) to cover tuning you may need. Most other information you need is covered in the comments in this thread. I will try to periodically answer questions as they come in, but I am not accepting work to convert your car, nor do I offer kits, parts or tuning for these anymore.

There's nothing magical about it, but you will need to have, or be able to get people with skills in mechanical, electrical and fabrication. Electrical can no be handled via an overlay wiring harness from Kinnetic, but nothing gets around the need to cut and weld the intake manifold and to build all of the necessary piping.

No. I believe it lives in southern AZ, now. However, building another one soon, as a daily driver.

I built a second one of these automatic cars, and drove it for the past three years. I sold that car recently, and am now completely out of the SRT-4 game. I will try to respond to questions as I can, but I think it is best for the questions and comments to be public, so that other people can find answers out publicly.

I sold this car about 3 years ago. However, I converted another car as a daily driver. Many more mods to that car, but have not had any time to make a video of it.

@@funtdrv How much would you say is to build one ? I had a SXT I was planning to drop a Auto PTGT into but life took a turn of events.

    • @funtdrv
      @funtdrv  2 года назад +1

@@TruChaosTV very difficult to say. No two situations are the same, and no two people's abilities are the same. If you had a complete PTGT and a full shop available, you might be able to do it yourself for not much more than the purchase price of the donor car. If you had to pay a shop for it all, then it could exceed the value of a SRT4 several times over.
