This helped a lot! I’m just a sophomore in highschool but I wanted to learn the uses of the discs as I am wanting to use them for things such as cleaning up old tools and polishing them. You gave me a lot of information for when to use what disc, thank you for your insight!

Excellent video John. I really enjoyed it. I used to be a carpenter in Brisbane and also done a lot of steel fabrication.
I like angle grinders and various discs, so this video was right up my alley.

Thanks John! Somewhat new to angle grinders. I've only used a cut off wheel so far. Your info on flap & the other discs was very helpful. Thanks again & hello from Texas.

Great video, full of good info. By chance I had just ordered a sample of the ceramic poly discs from Smith & Arrow. Planning to compare it to a (purple) Josco poly disc to see if its worth the extra money.
One other recommendation for you would be the Pferd rounded flap discs, great for inside corners / welds. Total Tools have them listed.

Thanks for watching. I ordered a metal disk off EBay but it took that long to come my hoof trimming saga was over it came the other day and I tried it on a bit of hard wood and I am sure it would be perfect. They are advertised for wood carving Mine is 100 MM across with a 22MM hole and they are advertised in colour red or black maybe gold as well. John

Extend your flap and poly disc life by running them on edge against concrete, the rougher the better. This wears the disc diameter down and exposes unused abrasive and squares up the edge.

Probably the trick is to grind the workpiece not your hand. I am a bit slack when it comes to that sort of thing I was invented before WPHS. I learnt at a young age not to put my extremities in things going around. It hurts. John

@@farminglifeaustralia6716 not sure what PPE you could use for your hands John. When I did my trade as a Fitter I was taught to absolutely NOT wear gloves for the risk of entanglement. You could secure the job with a pair of vice grips or put it in a vice and keep your hands well away? But I'm a bit like you mate......

@@brettharries2429 Its a bit like handles on grinders in some workplaces grinder handles are mandatory for safety ,with what I do they run the risk of getting tangled up and causing an accident. I should have used vise grips to hold the piece. I think its a personal thing if you feel safer using whatever go right ahead. I would never advise people to do the workshop safety practice's I do and never have. Its like driving a race car around the track I don't know anything about it and would never try to do it. Some people do crazy scary stuff time and again and get away with it because its what they know how to do. John

lol. Funny comment, but I think John knows what he's doing. The work he is doing in this particular video is not really that dangerous anyway.
I worked in construction for a long time, worked a lot with steel and timber. What John is doing is different to cutting up steel fence posts or old steel framing and tables. I 've done a lot of that and still do a bit. I advise people to use caution with angle grinders in general. They are actually pretty dangerous when not used properly. Usually I have a lot of room to manoeuvre when using them, so I use handle, sometimes not. Like John said, it's depends on different circumstances and environment.
For doing really heavy duty stuff, use handle, obviously always use proper full PPE, gloves, goggles, ear muffs, leather boots never rake guard off.
If you read this John, what is your favorite grinder? I like Makita, older ones are better. Recently used a 100 mm Ozito, did a fair bit of work with it, and a 125 mm Ryobi, great, used various Flexovit discs with it, no problem.

@@brettharries2429 yeah. It depends on particular environment and circumstances. When I worked in construction I would not wear gloves sometimes in specific situations because they could get jammed up or caught up. You need to feel properly too sometimes.
I didn't wear a watch either, although I like watches. They can be a pain, especially on rooves, can get caught on trusses/rafters, batons and straps, guttering, etc.
