My driving moccasins are the only casual shoe I own. I got rid of my sandals when I realized that these were easier to put on and take off in the summer. I stopped buying no-show socks when I discovered that terry cloth insoles were a suitable replacement. I also use them for walking and exercise; they duplicate a minimalist running shoe or barefoot running by encouraging forefoot strike running.

Got my first pair of drivers in dirty tan suede this summer. I agree with your comment that they work well as a replacement for flip flops. A younger me would have chucked on some slim jeans and slides to do some errands, but the driver with a leather lining are so much more classier and comfortable. Being English, I get the slipper comments, but they are more streamlined than the moc slipper, and don’t have the lambs wool to stop your feet breathing properly. You can also pick up a pair reasonably cheaply.

It’s crazy because the only reason why I would consider these is for driving! When I’m driving for 8 to 11 hours, I usually just takeoff my sneaker and sock and go barefoot it. I think I’m a weirdo, because I don’t like driving long distances with something on my foot. I just figure a driving shoe (just because I just heard about this today) would be a great solution. I hate getting out a car to pump gas and the first thing I do is reach for my shoes and put them on the ground so I can step in to them.

Hi John. Drivers are perfect for spring and summer. I have them in red, brown, dark blue, and grey. These are the kind of shoes men shoulld wear with shorts and jeans casually. I don’t think it’s wrong to wear them with a sport coat and jeans. They go well together. I generally wear them with chinos, a t-shirt, a sports coat and go to a pub, a night club or even a casual dinner. Sometimes I wear white sneakers instead.

@Kevin D. On the west coast of the southern Pacific Ocean wearing boat shoes, when you are not going to your boat is seen a pretencous if one accepts the fact that during the last three years Advertising agencies have used men dressed in boat shoes to ridicule any male that has a job that doesn't involve the "rugged" image provided by manual labour.
Of course no one questions what members of the Advertising agencies wear when they attend the compulsory lunchtime meetings at the numerous Yacht Clubs that conduct the wide range of races held on Sydney Harbour every Wednesday.Phil.

@@kevd6034 The bottom line is to wear what you find to be comfortable and wear your clothes with self confidence.
When I was in my early 20's I had always worked in Corporate jobs, where I had to dress like a Banker or a Lawyer, because those were the professions that I sold the first generation of computers to at Chairman and CEO levels, which was the top paying Sales job in Australia.
Then I was transferred to the Newspaper, Television and Advertising Agencies sectors, where a plain blue suit and white shirt looked out of place. So against strict Company policy I let my hair grow down to my shoulder and bought flared suits from top designers. While that fitted in perfectly with the attire of my new customers, it took me a year to feel comfortable wearing the very latest fashion.
But what really changed my attitude was that I doubled my sales and doubled my income and I was earning, year after year a higher salary than the Prime Minister, primarily because I was given good advice on how to dress with self confidence. Something that today you can learn on RUclips from people like John, who share this knowledge. But you have to learn to ask the right questions. Phil.

Only genuine Tod’s gomminos are acceptable. They are expensive but so chic. Better to put money on the shoes and wear cheaper slacks or shorts than the opposite. Keep the pair with the buckle on the top for the US only, in Europe it is a fashion faux pas.

I am in Australia, where most of the population live along the East Coast, in close proximity to the ocean beaches and the local dress style, IMO, is very indesive when it comes to the selection of casual shoes, with espedrilles available in the major Department stores but I have not noticed many worn in public, yet I live in Victoria's largest beach side suburb, but it's not a haven for teenager's, but it is probably the most popular place in Melbourne for the wearing of casual shoes, but that doesn't seem to include espadrilles.

John, I've got an issue. I bought an Allan Edmonds driving moc earlier this spring. When I got them they were very comfortable but the sole "dots" were only down the very center of the shoe. I hope I'm describing that correctly. The outer edge of the outsole didn't have the traction dots. When I stood up wearing the driving mocs I could dip to the left or right depending on how I shifted my weight.Walking any kind of distance would have been difficult. I looked into the subject a bit more (since this was my first attempt at a shoe like this) and most of what I read indicated that these shoes are really appropriate for driving only and the articles I read made it sound like one with these shoes should be driving a sports car. (which I do not have) I ended up returning them for these two reasons. Does that make sense? thanks John.

@@MTobin1000 The shoe salesman was correct because you had bought a real pair of Driving Shoes, not just a Fashion Statement.
The shoes that you bought were designed for "Heel and Toe" gear changing, when braking hard when entering a corner, then changing down into each lower gear, at higher than 6-7,000 rpm, in order to use the effect of "Engine Breaking" to supplement the cars brakes. This was very effective in cars that didn't have disc brakes.
The very last thing that you need to happen, when using this technique, to slow down during high speed cornering, is for the edge of the sole to slip on the accelerator.
Anyone who has driven a pre- 1959 VW Beetle, with no syncro on first gear, which can be easily accessed for rapid cornering by using a heel and toe gearchange, could demonstrate the effectiveness of the method below a road speed of 20mph, so could anyone who can drive a genuine vintage Hot Rod really fast, on a twisty mountain road. But they are a dying breed.
But you can't learn it from a book, or a YT video, you need to be sitting in the passenger seat. It's fun -- try it !!! Phil.

I was thinking of getting a pair of these but after reading reviews at a popular maker website there was alot of negative comments about the durability of the soles. People complained that the city sidewalks can eat up the soles very quickly on these shoes. What is your thoughts?

These are without a doubt beautiful and stylish shoes. However, most cannot be resoled , or repaired, don’t like the rain, and when the soles do get wet, they become very slippery and dangerous. So, before you splurge on a pair of suede Tods, you might want to move to Arizona. Cheers.

Driving mocassins are nice, but you cannot really walk a long distance when you wear them.
It's obviously nicer than flip flops when you go to the beach, but sneakers are also great. I have one pair of driving mocassins, but I don't wear them often. I don't think you need to wear them to drive.

@Stanislas. The driving shoes of the 1970s were never designed to be a replacement for Loafers, but if you seriously enjoyed spirited driving the very expensive driving shoes were good value, but you also put your moccasin based penny loafers in the car to change into when you were not driving. Today one would enjoy driving a Mazda Miata in top quality driving shoes. Phil.

Driving shoes were designed when drivers of sports cars used a Heel and Toe technique to down change gears faster and smoother than most old style synchromesh gear boxes could achieve.
At that time driving sports car was considered to be a fine art, with string back gloves being considered to be even more important than any driving shoe. Well that was my justification during the 60's and the 70's. But now those shoes, of which I have four pairs are just fashion statements, gathering dust in my wardrobe. They are not as functional as any loafer. Phil.

@@eyeheartsushi2212 Until a year ago I wore a pair of Florsheim Imperial penny loafers that I had resoled four times. They would have stood another one, but all of the local bookmakers have closed down. I went to every major shoe store in Melbourne Australia trying to find a replacement, but all the modern penny loafers are just dress shoes.
The 20plus year old Florsheim Imperial's were effectively as flexible as any of my modern driving shoes, but the leather on the Florshiem's is twice as thick and soft as a leather glove. During the last few months I have been looking at those available in the USA, but they are all "Fashion" footwear.
As I am currently working on relocating to the Wimmera area of North Eastern Victoria, I am planning on buying a couples of 1950/60's sports cars that are still fun to drive, seeing that road speed is limited to 100-110 kph, but there is no legal limit on cornering speed on an interesting twisty road.
So I will keep looking for a new pair of Penny Loafers.
      Phil.

As a person who goes to the track and races, i wear these a lot more because of the great pedal feel. Honestly, feels like my foot is the clutch at that point lol. Also it just looks weird wearing racing boots in public.
