Oh Lord, at the age of 44 I decided to see if I can start dressing better.. I've always HATED clothes shopping and always went for jeans and plain t-shirt and trainers (sneakers). I've learned so much from this channel and I've cleared out half my wardrobe and replaced it all with new stuff! I've spent more on clothes and bought more clothes this week then possibly in my whole life before! I'm loving it and having a great time! 😁
Great advice John. I´d been a super hard working employee who ever thought seriously at updating my style. I´m early retired at 60 now and I appreciate your advice so I can improve the way I look , and feel. Thanks and best wishes. By the way. You´re a super star Man.
Shorts are a must! I also like plaid shirts. I have a couple pairs and every time I wear them I get a lot of positive feedback. Dare to stand out a little!
Who said you can't teach an ole dog new trips! 60 is less than ten days away for me, the shorts idea was amazing thanks for the encouragement! Will be wearing a few while in Greece. Oh man those Anson belts are really amazing! jumped on that offer! the presentation when I opened the box was jaw dropping even my wife was impressed. Finally a Channel on this blasted RUclips for us Ole doggs who care about grooming fashion and lifestyles! Thanks John! PS.. U remind me of the Ryan Gosling character Jacob in the movie Crazy Stupid Love with Steve Carrell, trying to help us Cals out!
Agree on every bit of your post! Started following this channel a year ago, (age 60) and now at 61 I’m a new man (style-wise). And the first thing that crossed my mind when I found this channel was Crazy Stupid Love!
My favorite part about my Anson belt? I’m going through the airport recently and got stopped in the metal detectors. I simply took the buckle off, put it in a small coin bucket, set that on the belt to go through the scanner, and then walked through the metal detector again without it going off. Didn’t have to remove my belt. Just the buckle. When I got through security, I simply put the buckle back on, and I was ready to go!
So happy to see this … I live in the subtropics in Australia. It’s too hot for trousers from October - April. And I’ve been wondering about what shorts are suitable for me in my mid-40s
Great video John. Love the different combinations. Now my wife joins me whenever I'm watching one of your videos. She's now a fan of men's fashion thanks to you.
Great video and very helpful. One thing I really appreciated was towards the end where you had visual examples of all the styles you discussed in the video - including those cool belts. It gave me a lot of shirt/short combination ideas I wouldn’t have considered otherwise. Keep up the great work!
I’ve said many times that you needed to add colors to a few clothing items and you hit it spot on with this video. I’m a colorful man and I wear them well and I believe others can as well if they apply colors that suit their skin tone.
For sure summers are for shorts, but like you mentioned through out the video the right shorts. White Denim Shorts especailly if they are the right length and fit can be part of a great casual yet dressy summer outfit. Thanks John for all the wonderful information you share in this great channel.
Very good ideas John, I just happen to have a pair of shorts with the tailor for lenght issues. Here in El Salvador shorts are a must my friend, humidity is high and you know how that goes. Keep up the good work and lets enjoy life buddy.
John, went back and watched this, you inspired me to get the blue/white and red/blue Anson belts. Can't wait to wear them. Love the try on at the end, make more of those!
Great style tips as usual. Here in the UK, shorts are a very on-off experience due to the temperamental and unpredictable summer weather, So-Cal it ain't. Good to hear you mention work wear. I find military surplus shorts to be good for serious work. They can look good too if adjusted for fit, and they are new or super grade.
Useful information as always and also like the looks throughout the video. Thanks for the link to Anson Belts, I was in need of some casual belts. Love all my Anson Belts. Have a great day.
I turned 60 this year and am living in the U.K I still like to wear shorts and look stylish. I agree with everything you have said in this video. I just wish I could find more shorts in pastel or vibrant colours over here, it is difficult.
I stick to light grey, navy and brown chino shorts for when it's very hot but I supose it depends on your neighbourhood and what activities you do. I've just bought a Panama Hat and I think that has a practical use and can elevate a casual outfit.

Lots of useful information as always. The Anson belts are interesting and I plan to check out as I only have one black and one brown leather currently.
The solid colour chino shorts look great. In Australia the spring season colours will be in the Department Stores in four weeks time. Now that we are over the COVID repeated Lockdowns in Melbourne I really need to indulge in some Retail Therapy. As you suggest I will check out the denim options. As usual a very interesting video. Great video as I will have agree with You on all of your Men's Short choices, but I will have to say that I believe that having a pair of Linen as well Searsucker Shorts will be just as breathable comfortable as well as raiding some flair to us Men who are over the ago of 40.
Seems like the short shorts fad of a couple of years ago has faded, thank goodness. I like fitted shorts just above the knee. And I know older guys like the baggy cargo shorts but they really are not flattering. Slimmer shorts with some stretch look much better, are very comfortable and who needs all those pockets! Great video John.
Hi John. I used to have a pair of blue and white striped shorts that I wore until they wore out. Seeing you wear those striped shorts makes me want to try and find some striped shorts again because I really like that look. BTW you have great taste in belts as I too have the same four Anson belts that you showed today . ; ) Peace. : )
Hi John. This was an incredible video. I am in South Africa with one month to go till Spring. So perfect timing for me to grab a few tips from you. Thank you.😄🙌💪
Thanks for sharing! I'm 69, retired. In this part of the country, we have summer 9 months of the year & the beach is a few miles away. I wear shorts almost every month except January & February. Rarely wear long pants. Just above the knee is okay with me. I don't tuck my shirt in unless I'm going to church (no, I don't wear shorts to church!) or a business meeting so it doesn't matter what belt I wear. Don't use too many dark Hawaiians but light ones, no problem, with dark shorts. It's against the law to wear a tie at the beach. The police will cut it off!
Cool video. Some ideas I haven’t thought of before. I was trying to find some suggestions for brands or places to shop for shorts and (god help me) chinos. Chinos make me shudder after all the bad 90s ones we had. But I know they’re better now! Maybe u have a summer chinos video or advice for nighttime events when shorts are too informal
Great look book! I love shorts and wear them all summer. I definitely need to try the partial tuck. How do you feel about men our age wearing shorts to dinner on the weekends? Thanks!
@@40OverFashion We live in Nashville most of the year, but also have a place in Dunedin, FL. Nashville is very touristy and I see men our age in baggy cargo shorts and Ill-fitting tee shirts out on a Saturday night all the time. I guess it has soured me on shorts in the evening. Florida is different. Shorts are pretty much the go to in the summer.
Question about the Anson belts. Which width do you recommend? I'd like to get one box of casual belts (like the striped ones that you have) and another box with some formal leather ones. I'd rather just all get the same width, so that all the buckles are universal with all the straps. Will formal belts look weird with the wider look / the casual belts look weird with the more narrow look? Thanks!
Thank you for the tips which are valuable. John, what can be your suggestion for the shorts if I have oversized legs as compared to my upper body? My legs are way larger and i'm only 5'4" in height. So I have no confidence wearing shorts in public because they really show the bulk in my legs. Instead, I try to hide them inside my pants.
Hey John thanks for not being bothered by questions. I always appreciate your expertise as I continue rebuilding my wardrobe. I haven't asked you this yet but what are your thoughts on Summer weight Wool Trousers? A video explaining them would be quite insightful instead of the usual heavier Wool. I think they look amazing with just a dress shirt. Do you think in states like AZ and FL lighter wool pants are more suitable or would you still recommend thicker Wool pants?
@@40OverFashion Thanks John I'll ask again on the next video but would you ever consider looking into some Summer weight Wool Trousers so you can discuss them on a future video? Trust me they are extremely comfortable if you want to change it up from linen. Mine are thin and light so my legs won't feel so hot despite the Darker color. I mostly wear them for semi formal events but once in awhile I don't mind dressing them down. For Linen I'll probably purchase one in the future as well as they are both classy yet breathable options so you can't go wrong with either. I have a few Linen shirts right now and when I recently wore one out in over 115 degree heat it felt amazing! Hope you're enjoying your Summer.
I have problems wearing short at my age because I have issues with have shoes that will go with shorts and not look wrong on me. Especially now I don’t really wear flip flops anymore. Could you do a follow up video about this?

Love the shorts ...where did you buy them?...I use to buy my shorts when I go out of the country because I like slim fit or skinny...but here in USA is very difficult to find them right now with Covid I can't
I dig those shoes btw, where do you recommend getting a pair like these ? I tried Thursday but they only come in standard, I need wide, unless I invest in a shoe stretcher? .... And those shorts work on you, I tried just feel uncomfortable even trying them on. The search continues here in New York.
@@40OverFashion Thank you brother..... BTW, picked up shorts at The Gap, I dig the look but a little loose around the thigh even rolled up. Any other store that may be a better fit ?
Denim shorts?! I see my pictures from the 90’s and I just think: what the heck were you thinking about? Even though I used to wear then a lot. Anyway, I will consider it.
I remember denim shorts from the 70s and I don’t like them. However the ones he showed looked cool and if they are stretchy it might be comfortable. But not sure where to get stuff like that. I’m a poor shopper
My legs are very thin and I find it difficult to find shorts that aren't so loose around them. Are there any specific brands or styles I should look for which would fit me best? Also, you didn't mention any brands of stretch denim shorts. Is there a specific brand that you prefer or feel would work best for me and my skinny legs? Thanks in advance for your time!
@@40OverFashion awesome, thanks for the quick reply. I thought you were going to say some high end shops but I can work with Target and H&M. Your videos are great, much appreciated!
Love all the shorts and shirts. White sneaks with everything? Not so much.... And cuffing shorts is a major " no no" in my humble opinion. Makes us look like Nsync retirees.🤷
Contrary to what you hear people in Europe wear shorts. Especially the younger people. Global warming, in my opinion, has changed how people are dressing. Keep up the great work John.
I work in a community with a lot of European expats and do not see them wearing shorts. I often see pants that come down to calf level. Not sure what they're called but it looks like baseball pants without socks. IMHO, it looks silly.
Great advice for when you HAVE to wear shorts. But... shorts should be avoided as most men - even men with well a well developed upper body - have skinny legs and shorts make a man look weak. Instead follow the color/fit reccs in this vid and buy some very light weight, breathable cotton pants.
I found this video late in the short wearing season. Nevertheless, here's my 2 cents. 1) one of the major elements that make shorts look good on a man are well developed thighs. Not body builder level, but muscular. If because if injury or illness you've been laid up awhile thighs are the first to atrophy. You won't fill out the bottoms of your shorts and they will look incredibly ill fitting. 2) probably more important. For the love of God, remove from your wardrobe and stop buying cargo shorts! They're hideous and don't flatter anyone that wears them. If you're not on the hiking trail or camp site, ditch 'em.
Ive been known as fashionable most of my life. I guess some men are used to being dressed by mommy or the wife. This might be useful for that man. I find the name a little insulting. I dont need anyone to tell me how to dress.
I am 76, perfectly fit, I gym every day for 2 hrs, and do 5K......,I wear Ralph Lauren Purple Label exclusively...I spend about $75,000 a year on clothing alone...I own 3 homes...Virginia, Florida, and Arizona....I have had 54 surgeries from trashing 2 Corvettes and a motorcycle yet I suffer no handicapping conditions...I currently own 13 vehicles, including two Corvettes, with another on the way next year, four Cadillacs, and 6 collector cars and you need to shave that crap off your face. Beards and Gray hair make ANY man look older, older, older....and who the hell wants to look older. Clothing should be custom fit, not off the rack.......
I don't see anything wrong or objectionable about the denim shorts at 5:57, held up as an example of awful denim. I think they are the right length and color , maybe could be a little darker. At worst they could be slightly slimmer at the hem. Knee length is far more flattering than mid thigh length like your examples. What ruins the look in that example is the awful shoes - only suitable for working around the yard. The model should throw them out. Also the harsh white socks clash horribly, They draw your eye instantly.
Oh Lord, at the age of 44 I decided to see if I can start dressing better.. I've always HATED clothes shopping and always went for jeans and plain t-shirt and trainers (sneakers). Most all of my shorts are from Express, H&M and Target.
What kind of sneakers are those?
They’re from Express, but I don’t see the exact model on their website anymore.
I havent shopped for shorts in almost 15 years. What are some good places to look at fashionable shorts?
Everywhere! I get a lot of my shorts at Express, but H&M is another good one, and also I’ve done very well with Target shorts.
@@40OverFashion awesome, thanks for the quick reply. I thought you were going to say some high end shops but I can work with Target and H&M. Your videos are great, much appreciated!
Where do you get those sneakers
They're from Express, but I don't see them on the site anymore.
I think with your legs you can wear all kinda shorts 😁
Amazing and so cool body
Do you have a link for the athletic shorts?
They’re from Express. I don’t have a link right now because I’m not at my computer.
@@40OverFashion no problem. I will see if I can find them. thanks for the video!
Hmmm, white denim shorts...
"The Don dont wear shorts" lol great vudeo... just in time
John, nice " short" video 😉 (Sorry, couldn't help it)
Haha!
What brand are those gum sole shoes ??
They're from Express, but I don't see them on the site anymore.
@@40OverFashion thank you .. I’ll look for them !!
The partial tuck.....nope. Unless you live in 90120..lol

Love all the shorts and shirts. White sneaks with everything? Not so much.... And cuffing shorts is a major " no no" in my humble opinion. Makes us look like Nsync retirees.🤷
Have to say I love the white sneaker look with all the combos here.
Yes, white sneakers, absolutely
White sneakers yes. Cuff the shorts yes. To each their own.
Contrary to what you hear people in Europe wear shorts. Especially the younger people. Global warming, in my opinion, has changed how people are dressing. Keep up the great work John.
Thank you very much!
I work in a community with a lot of European expats and do not see them wearing shorts. I often see pants that come down to calf level. Not sure what they're called but it looks like baseball pants without socks. IMHO, it looks silly.
Seen those too.
Just put aside a stack of jeans to do cut offs. 70's seems to be coming back. What are your thoughts on corduroy?
I'm over 40 not gay so I think I'll dress myself thank you
I can't wear shorts because I don't have legs like that.
Personally, I think all men should wear hot pants after the age of 40. And Speedos at the pool/beach.
Title should have been Belt advertisement. Respect points lost for this channel. Let's not even discuss the pink shorts
