Espadrilles are king of summer while wearing casual clothes only during the day period Been wearing some since I was a teenager Over dressing them is not the way and your feet are going to have a crush for them just give them a chance and remember day and casual only
I bought a pair of espadrilles a month ago, and they've really grown on me. They breathe better than the sandals they replaced. They're (slightly) dressier than the sandals. They're less expensive then the sandals. They're more comfortable then the sandals.... TLDR: they're comfortable and practical in hot, humid climates, so they're now my go-to shoe when wearing shorts.
They do come off as feminine if the guy is also a little feminine. Then it looks like it’s a woman. But the model shown in this video looks great, and no feminine vibe. (Or, sissy boys should avoid espadrilles).
Come on everyone! Spadrilles até certainly worn at the Beaches, sea side cities like Saint Tropez, Monaco, Nice, via Amalfi in Italy. It' s very cherming tô wear them with linen shirts, shorts and also being elegant!!!!! It' s just a matter of leaving the confort zone and wear them. Prejudice should be put apart, That's all
Also I do have a preppy section in my summer wardrobe and boatshoes are a requirement for me I just love the look with pinholes chinos and a poloshirt with a Woven belt
Great video John. My opinion on the espadrilles is that some guys can pull them off. For myself being a short guy if smaller stature, I think they would look more feminine on smaller feet. They don't appear to very durable and I'm just think guys should wear footwear that looks a bit more substantial. If you do try them out, I would suggest avoiding the brighter colors or pastel shades and stick to the tans, greys, blues and earthy colors. And try to find an espadrille that doesn't appear unisexed. I do like the boat shoes. Nice that they are still around and gaining in popularity.
Espadrilles are an essential in Europe, but don't buy cheap ones. The soles can be slippy on cheap versions, so make sure to buy ones with grip. Easy to slip on and off, light and light to pack
As always, great content. After watching your channel for quite some time, I feel better and dress better. Had 1 pair of sneakers, 1 brown and 1 black pair of dress shoes and flip flops. Now I’ve got monks, casual dress shoes, loafers, etc. not quite as many shoes as my wife, but a lot more choices in my closet in shoes then I used to have. Thanks John!
Great video John!!! As usual !! When I made the decision to smarten up my appearance in my mid 30's and ditching sneakers as apart of my everyday wear was a key factor in that change (I am just fed up with them now). After buying Brown brogue boots and black Oxfords the next pair of shoes were a pair of brown and blue boat shoes for the warmer climate, which have been my summer casual goto shoes for the best part of 5+ years, this summer, due to them looking a bit grotty now, I have replaced them with a pair of dark blue suede driving mocs and they are defo taking a bit of time to get used to, especially when wearing shorts as they look quite narrow on foot which is further exaggerated whilst wearing shorts, but I feel they look great with a pair of light jeans or Chinos. Truth be told, I only really wear shorts when it's blazing hot... Being from London, that's about a week in the year. I agree that Boat shoes are coming back into fashion with the younger demographic, with the preppy fashion that is going around.
Great content as always. I have been following you for the past 3 weeks and everything has been interesting. I have changed some of my styles and it has been very positive. Thank you.
In my opinion the only difference between the espadrille and the slip-on sneaker is the sole. They both have the same profile and laid back and casual vibe. If you can wear one style you can wear the other. Nice video and great suggestions for summer, which is finally here in Montreal. Have a great day John and stay safe.
They have the same usage, but the combination with the rest of your outfit is important. T-shirt, go for a slip-on sneakers. A loose linen shirt, go for espadrillos.
You helped save me, my wife, daughter and her friend took me out shopping for early Father’s Day. I watched all of your videos the night before just to have some style background. The day was a success a whole new wardrobe so I can now ditch the running shoes, cargo shorts, and monogram tees. I think you should call your business “Clueless” or “Stuck in a rut”. Great job on the videos👍👍👍.
i love shoes and i live in a city tropics of singapore. yes, i love loafers. can dress up and dress down with it. another fav. of mine is the white sneakers. thanks John!
Espadrilles are more European or beachy than preppy. So keep that in mind when putting that look together. I don't mind them if you're going casual in a warm climate. They just seem better suited than some loafers, mocs, or boat shoes in some instances. I guess if your were into wearing Toms then you'd be more comfortable transitioning to an Espadrille. When I see them though, I think super casual. It's more stylish than say a Sanuk or Toms shoe and a step up from a slip-on canvas sneaker.
Good morning John, Another timely & informative video which I greatly appreciate… Just NEAUX to the Espadrilles; they may look nice &/or fashionable on the Italian Male Fashion Model, but negative for the 40/Fashion RUclips channel Male Audience U’ve developed (@ least in the USA)… Waaayyy too FEMININE… Have a great wknd, Mac😎👍
Yes to spadrilles. Casual, fashionable & laid back. Pair with linen and relax. Not a formal event shoe but hey it’s summer & I’m retired so nothing formal anyway. Great channel, keep it up.
I am familiar with the classic boat shoe but was not aware of the driving mock; definitely seems worth checking out. The slip on sneaker also gives a nice, casual look.
I might be too old to pull off the Python Green Venetian Loafers but love the look of them. Have to agree with DM about the Espandrilles... they look like house slippers. BTW...Love the channel. Thanks for keeping it real.
Hi John. I had a pair of boat shoes back in the 80's and I remember putting a running shoe insole in them because they had no arch support whatsoever. After that they were fine and I wore them till I wore them out.I now mostly rock driving mocs and loafers. I would suggest avoiding the ones with the nubby soles because they wear down faster especially if you wear them a lot ( personal experience talking here ) . You're also spot on about those hybrid boat shoes. Kinda weird. Peace. : )
The boat shoe or, Top Sider should be a staple for casual shoes. I have been wearing them literally for over 55 years. I also have a few pairs of John Lobb boat shoes. A little dressier and about $1,500 a pair. Salvatore Ferragamo drivers. Classic also. Another must have the Gucci 1953 Horsebit loafer. In brown or black. Timeless and good taste. Good video as always. Never wear socks when it's warm. Vintage Lilly Pulitzer great also. Classic never goes out of style.
I've got a cheap pair of Espridrilles for when it's very warm (not often) in black. I think I prefer them to sandels but they're not worth spending much on in my humble opinion. I prefer boat shoes to smart trainers.
Well I’m showing my age here but deck shoes were big here on the East coast in the 80’s and Espadrilles definitely had their moment, who didn’t want to be Crockett and Tubbs?😂
Thanks, John. Not so sure about the Espadrilles either. Love my suede driving Mocs, however I wore them one day into my podiatrist’s office. She said they were horrible shoes to wear because there is little support. And that flexibility that you mentioned snd that I like is why she said they are terrible. That being said, not giving them up. Snd I own several pair of boat shoes snd love them.
Another great video filled with excellent, usable content and information! Thanks John! As for the Espadrilles - I'm not a huge fan because I don't think they look good on me. However, if you want to step out of your comfort zone give them a try. My go to shoes in the summer are the clean white sneaker, the boat shoe, and the driving moc. I've also been starting to wear loafers a little more during the summer for dressier occasions. All worn either with no show socks, or sockless which is my preferred choice.
Nice video. I'm not a fan of boat shoes, unless you want to look old. Espadrilles are for old guys, or ladies. I like slip-on sneakers, driving shoes, and loafers.
Funny how people see shoes differently in different countries. Where i live dubes (boat shoes) are popular with middle class teens and younger preppy type fashion. The older people wearing them tend to be boating people.
Espadrilles would be fine for beach areas, including beach towns, and perhaps picnics and poolside. But apart from that, I think the other options would be better.
I so needed this information! It's time for me to buy new shoes. Thank you for sharing, I really appreciate what you do and your commitment to this cause,
Espadrilles are a great choice. These are way better than a boat shoe for casual summer wear. Boat shoes are great, I have a pair, but they look too "older guy predictable" for when you want a relaxed summer look in a slip on shoe. Picture Cary Grant in the early scenes from To Catch A Thief.
Great video John. Agree on the boat shoes. I wear them on occasion but it’s not my first choice. As for espadrilles, I don’t see Europeans wear them except for the beach. I do like the leather slip sneakers. Elevates a pair of chinos if done right.
Oh also, Nisolo Huaraches $150, leather sandals, closed toe, I have 3 different pairs of them they are the only sandal I found to be elegant enough to wear.
I love espadrilles. They lean slightly feminine I don’t disagree. But they are so damn comfortable for me because of how breathable they are. You really don’t feel them. Kind of feels like you’re wearing sandals or something. But they can be dressed up to wear with outfits you wouldn’t wear with sandals.
Thanks for the video John. I have been wearing the boat shoes since the eighties because as I put them on they ere an instant sensation. I have kind of gotten away from them over the past few years but they will go with just about anything! I appreciate, as usual, all the great ideas. The one shoe I'm sure most like but I do not is the real soft one with the rubber heel coming up high on the back of the shoe. Great looks and I'll check out the links my friend!
Having a hard time finding nice suede blake stich penny loafers! This time of year I thought there would be a large selection especially with the DTC Companies for around $200
Indeed. They are unique enough to fit in certain cultures or particular places and not fit in so much in others. I'll definitely consider them if I find myself heading to the Mediterranean soon. Have a good one. 😎
Espadrilles are absolutely the right thing for slopping around the village markets of Provence and the Cote D'Azur. If you're in Doncaster, Pittsburgh, Wagga Wagga you're gonna get stoned to death...
I’m with you on the feminine look of the espadrilles. It like the Toms for men. Not my thing. One brand I found recently awesome light super comfortable casuals are hey dude. Highly recommended
Yes to classic boat shoes! They’ve been a go-to for me forever. No to espadrille. Didn’t really like the sponsored shoes. I also wear a lace up canvas shoe that comes in a variety of colors - Sperry makes a great version.
I agree 100%. I was on the fence with boat shoes but yeah they are kinda dorky so just switched over to driving mocs. Espadrilles look like girly shoes so no way, not for me.
John, you may disagree with me on what my choices of summer footwear: All white Air Max by Nikes. When it comes to boat shoes, I went with Skechers brand boat shoes. More comfortable than a typical Sperry boat shoes.
No a big fan of the espadrille I personallydon't think they look good on me, , but I was a big fan of the boat shoe back in the 80s. I do like the other shoes that you show cased so I am thinking about revisiting the boat shoe. I am also a fan of the Eddie Bauer amphib shoe for summer shorts
Awesome video. Have made major changes in shoe purchases thanks to you. My wife longer comments " Your not wearing those shoes to go out with me". The simply plane sneaker looks great. Love my loafers too. So sorry, not a fan of the espadrilles. Keep up the great work.
Espadrilles are a no for me. I'm not sure of the no socks, dress trouser look, looks like you just forgot to put them on. The blue brown brogues are very cool.
Hi John, thank you for all these useful videos. I used to own the same type of shoe in tobacco brown, which was very versatile. . Now I own a pair boat shoes in light blue-green (according to Timberland the color is named as "sea pine"). What are the colors in polo shirt and chinos/shorts that could be combined with this color?
I struggle with summer shoes. I have driving mocs and white minimal sneakers. The mocs have zero arch support and padding. Sneakers get hot. What’s a guy going to do?
Back in the 1980's I bought a pair of espadrilles when I was on vacation in France. I thought they would make me look European or maybe like Sonny Crockett from Miami Vice. Instead they just looked dumb, it's a hard pass from me. I'm good with all the other options though... and already own versions of each 👍
Espadrilles for the beach, Driving shoes for driving. Soft loafer's for smart casual, those hard loafer's don't look right with shorts imo. Plain slim trainers or deck shoes for casual and leather, i know, flip flops. Also worn in desert boots can look good for all round look.
Great video!! I do have a question for you My biggest problem is I wear a size 12 wide shoe and I'm having a hard time finding a shoe company that carries a 12 wide shoes can you recommend a shoe company that carries 12 wide shoes?
Liked your post overall. As far as the question of espadrilles goes, I do not care for the look. Is the look feminine, maybe but I don't care for the look regardless. I cannot see myself wearing that and as another commenter said, it does look like a house slipper. In regards to wearing some of the leather shoes with hand finish with shorts, to me they appear too dressy while the shorts obviously connote a casual air. They seem to "fight" one another in my opinion. However you know more about style than I, all I can say is I can't see myself wearing that combination.
"Hey Dude"! Don't blow off the deck shoe you don't care to talk about? It's the most interesting one! Flip-flop -hemp or other cool designs and colors, Leather sandals, keep those pedicures up to date!
I want to address two shoes, the espadrilles and the driving shoe. I don’t own a pair of either. I would probably buy espadrilles before I would buy drivers. I have seen several comments saying the espadrilles are feminine. I just want to say that two different actors playing James Bond have worn espadrilles, Sean Connery in Thunderball and Roger Moore in For Your Eyes Only. I wouldn’t call James Bond feminine. I would never buy drivers. I am a former race car driver and of course I had special shoes to wear driving the race car. They were made of leather and nomex. The nomex was for fire resistance. They had a smooth sole with no heel. You do not need a special shoe for driving an automobile on public roads. The rubber nubs on the sole of these shoes will wear down quickly and they can not be resoled. When they wear down, throw them away. They are thin and on rough surfaces it may hurt your feet. Personally, I think they are ugly and it is a ridiculous design and serves no real purpose.
Greetings, Does the airbrush finish on the first two pair that you showed in this video? I am not a fan of that hi-gloss finish. Reminds me of a faux finish…
No espadrilles. For me, I would say a classic summer foundation still works best: a clean pair of low profile, minimalist sneakers; a pair of comfortable, classic boat shoes; a good quality pair of traditional penny loafers (they look good with or without socks), and a nice pair of leather flip-flops or sandals. Oh, and just to be clear, no espadrilles.
Espadrilles are king of summer while wearing casual clothes only during the day period
Been wearing some since I was a teenager
Over dressing them is not the way and your feet are going to have a crush for them just give them a chance and remember day and casual only

Espadrills come off as feminine to me too but I wouldn't tell someone not to try something but they give me the same vibe John.
Well said!

Appreciate the comment Daniel!
John, you may disagree with me on what my choices of summer footwear: All white Air Max by Nikes. When it comes to boat shoes, I went with Skechers brand boat shoes. More comfortable than a typical Sperry boat shoes.
Espadrills work with shorts and a sweater or tshirt. In other words, only super casual.
Excellent! I have or would choose Amy shoe on this list except espadrils. Not for me.
Thank you Shawn!
I have a pair…..not much support so I add support to them and they are then comfortable.
Few suggestion for the slip ons?
I must have that polka dot shirt!!!!
Thanks for this video. I love boat shoes. Please I have a question: What is the best summer shoe to wear with chinos, shirt and tie.
I’d go with a loafer!
Thank u sir . U gave me a clear idea
Espadrills to me look "ok". I don't own any and I think they look best walking around Europe near some beach.
Thanks for commenting Randy!
Awesome video. Have made major changes in shoe purchases thanks to you. My wife longer comments " Your not wearing those shoes to go out with me". The simply plane sneaker looks great. Love my loafers too. So sorry, not a fan of the espadrilles. Keep up the great work.
Thank you very much Luis!
Reiss has a cool twist on the espardrille... it's a penny loafer with the sole of an espadrille. I sent a link to you on Facebook messenger
Espadrilles: like flip flops. Beach or pool.
Thanks Dave!
Good info. What is your take on the classic penny loafer? I'm sure I could go sockless with a nice pair of chinos. Let me know your thoughts.
Love the penny loafer!
Espadrilles are a no for me. I'm not sure of the no socks, dress trouser look, looks like you just forgot to put them on. The blue brown brogues are very cool.
Thanks Colin! Sometimes I don’t do socks in my videos to save time when changing a lot.
@@40OverFashion Ah, makes sense.
Tough for me to know exactly. Google search, Canva color wheel and find the complementary color.
I struggle with summer shoes. I have driving mocs and white minimal sneakers. The mocs have zero arch support and padding. Sneakers get hot. What’s a guy going to do?
Casual loafers! Or put insoles into the drivers.
Back in the 1980's I bought a pair of espadrilles when I was on vacation in France. I thought they would make me look European or maybe like Sonny Crockett from Miami Vice. Instead they just looked dumb, it's a hard pass from me. I'm good with all the other options though... and already own versions of each 👍
Thanks for commenting Brad!
Hi John, did you ever recommend a brand of no-show socks? thanks
Yes! Stance. I just bought another 3-pack yesterday… amzn.to/3vfbTEK
@@40OverFashion Do you agree with the sizing listed? so 9.5 would be a large
I have low cut “minimalist” white leather sneakers but may try a slip on sneaker this summer.
Espadrilles for the beach, Driving shoes for driving. Soft loafer's for smart casual, those hard loafer's don't look right with shorts imo. Plain slim trainers or deck shoes for casual and leather, i know, flip flops. Also worn in desert boots can look good for all round look.
Well put Stephen!
Great video!! I do have a question for you
My biggest problem is I wear a size 12 wide shoe and I'm having a hard time finding a shoe company that carries a 12 wide shoes can you recommend a shoe company that carries 12 wide shoes?
Liked your post overall. As far as the question of espadrilles goes, I do not care for the look. Is the look feminine, maybe but I don't care for the look regardless. I cannot see myself wearing that and as another commenter said, it does look like a house slipper. In regards to wearing some of the leather shoes with hand finish with shorts, to me they appear too dressy while the shorts obviously connote a casual air. They seem to "fight" one another in my opinion. However you know more about style than I, all I can say is I can't see myself wearing that combination.
Thanks for commenting Michael!
Which no-show socks do you recommend?
What brand are those suede drivers? I really like those.
Let us stick to the classics, those are timeless.
"Hey Dude"! Don't blow off the deck shoe you don't care to talk about? It's the most interesting one! Flip-flop -hemp or other cool designs and colors, Leather sandals, keep those pedicures up to date!
What do you think of those Cole Haans?
Thanks Ron!
Nice commentary. Yeah, I don’t like either. But I actually like the Espadrilles better than the Drivers. The Drivers look like Elf shoes
