He isn't just our life's mozart, he's well and truly up there with the all time greats. Possibly the greatest. He's only 23, it's scary to imagine what this man may achieve. Already achieved what most musicians could only dream of.
Siobhan Fagan I think also there’s something about him appealing to a group of people who have never heard the music he gets his inspiration from, so assume he is inventing a lot of this stuff himself.
I don't know if you realize just how good you are.., not just your technique, but your 'ear' ... your phrasing ... that RANGE .... that 'bottom' is so rich and fluid ... that while you're singing, we forget you're still accompanying yourself ... Just SUBLIME.
This is so true.. I drive to philly several months ago to see if this wizard was the real deal or was just a lot of fluff behind a bunch of electronics.. as we all now know he IS the real deal.. he not only does it all .. he does it on a level that is mind blowing even to professionals like myself with a BA degree in Music Composition. Long live Jacob.... he has inspired so many to be better.
Found him yesterday. I feel like I should not try and listen to it all at once even though I sure am tempted. One new song per day.Greetings from Music Conservatory in Prague
Collier is amazing on every level. He's mastered technology, but even more important, he's mastered musicianship and has tapped into it to unveil his inspired artistry. He has a vast amount of knowledge of harmony and melody, can play multiple instruments very well, and can takes inspiration from multiple genres of music. The world needs more like him, especially as so many narrow the input they receive from various sources.
Goodness gracious. Genius so grand it feels like Nature: This is a rendition not to be compared with other songs but with sunsets and fallen Autumn leaves graciously painting air currents on a windy afternoon.
This is the same vein of blood flowing from Debussy, Revel, Scriabin, to Bill Evans, Fred Hersch, and now Jacob Collier. Except he has now all the high tech and HD recording! Indeed, a giant to come.
They will. Just like music was never the same after Mozart, Miles Davis, The Beatles. I think he's that important. A synthesis of virtually every western style.
I would love to see more of his music with just piano and voice. I love ALL his stuff....but this is beyond. I could listen all day..and I have been, on repeat.
there are so many young male singers whose falsetto get irritate me indescribably ...but Jacob's falsetto especially along with his stunning LOW... it is simply marvelous
I think it might have to do with the quality of the notes. Jacob's falsetto is pretty much perfect without any mechanical alteration - and while many singers sing falsetto to show that they can, thus showing off often beyond what would be best for the piece, Jacob seems to be singing falsetto because it suits the music he's made.
The reason his falsetto is flawless is because he has been a professional opera singer since the age of 6, if not younger. He played child roles in some pretty major operas that toured.
@@pepeermudo I wish I could like your comment a million times!!!! I tell so many people about the crazy stuff Jacob does and they always say "but why though?" BECAUSE!!!! Because it sounds better than anything I've heard in my whole life!
I love just hearing the clarity and range of his voice in this stripped down version! his piano playing is impeccable as always but hearing the versatility and control he has of his voice was incredible! it really shows off his artistry and came off as more genuine and vulnerable to me. bravo!
One of the most amazing solo performances I've ever seen, sublime is the word that comes to mind, what a beautiful vibe here.....this touches the soul, makes you think (of wonder!)
my favourite version of this song so far. its not possible to find words. still trying i'd say it touches an elusive layer of my being, colouring me exhilarated reassured inspired satisfied yearning understood encouraged accompagnied opened unafraid and loving.
This is fantastic. I remember seeing him a few years back at Ronnie Scott's with his band supporting Jason Rebello - and it was an acoustic jazz setup and phenomenal. I do enjoy his electronic multi layer style too, but really think when stripped back like this his talents shine through much clearer and are transmitted to the listener much more directly.
Beauty and imagination to get lost in. You can feel the anglo-irish folk tune tradition. Refined by a most tasteful jazzification. Pat Metheny may be one of his influences.
Jacob is 22, so not really a 'boy-wonder'. Just because he doesn't look more than 17 is 'neither here nor there'. Jacob is now a professional musician of the greatest sophistication, originality and mature taste. Hearing this, we already know how world-famous he is certain to become.
TheDeathknight79 Nah, he has that custom made keyboard thing he calls a harmonizer, where he can kind of multiply his own voice by pressing the keys while singing
Fuck, I love stripped-down Jacob Collier. I love his music, but sometimes it's so technically perfect that it straddles the line between talent and gimmick. Here, you can actually hear a couple subpar notes and imperfections and for me it makes it 10× better than when every detail is perfectly engineered. I listen to this like twice a day.
@@FedeRhodes I don't listen to Jacob because of his talent. I listen to him because I get great enjoyment from his music and I can just dive into it. I never listen to anything just because it's hard to do.
Lots of people criticize the guys musical choices, including myself in a lot of cases. Some of it I don’t get at all. But the one thing you have to give him at the very least is that he isn’t prideful or boastful; he is happy to say that every musician makes choices that not everyone will like. And it doesn’t seem to be in the sense of justifying, ex post facto, any music that isn’t good. It’s a pre-emptive understanding that choices are made in a vast landscape that not everyone will understand at any given time. And I’ve gone through the experience many times where I didn’t like something at first. And then at some point for whatever reason, I came to really like it a lot. Many of the greats were never appreciated in their time, but this also doesn’t mean that they kid should be degraded by the degree to which he isn’t being appreciated. All of these ways by which people attempt to guide their thinking about this are like a sort of math in a non-mathematical setting.
goddamn purists...all I heard the first time was beautiful music, I swear I never wanna get to the point where I notice the recording details before the music.
sm57 is maybe the best microphone of all times, check how many number one albums/songs have been recorded with that little wonder, you can use it for everything AND it's cheap =D
Iannis O. lannis O., The recording details make the music all the more beautiful! I have on occasions repeatedly listened to songs that were not that good or that I didn't like simply because the recording quality was extraordinary. IMO, the sm57's here are more than good enough for youtube and this is a great song with a fantastic singer, (that range and he scales without a voice crack... superb!).
fede4real i agree with you, although I think Jacob voice is pretty sweet, it feels a little pushing. Fred Mercury was an exception though. What I love in Jacob is his supernatural knowledge of harmony and his fenomenal ability to listen to things (really strong), if you know what I mean.
What an extremely talented individual, probably having perfect pitch and knowing his music theory, but the genre does nothing for me. Something is missing, but what?
Im thinking that he's our life's time Mozart. They only show up once in a generation. Im glad to be alive to hear this spirit.
He isn't just our life's mozart, he's well and truly up there with the all time greats. Possibly the greatest. He's only 23, it's scary to imagine what this man may achieve. Already achieved what most musicians could only dream of.

Got to agree. Still searching in vain for the superlatives.
I don't know if you realize just how good you are.., not just your technique, but your 'ear' ... your phrasing ... that RANGE .... that 'bottom' is so rich and fluid ... that while you're singing, we forget you're still accompanying yourself ... Just SUBLIME.
Exactly, this is not just talent, this is God's gift to Jacob Collier
+Paulson Jeanty it may be gods gift but the man has cultivated it and made grow
...no doubt.
absolutely!
.... His 'mentor' is Quincy Jones ... yes ... THAT Quincy Jones.
It is seldom when someone comes along who's so far beyond the spectrum of good that he's in another universe.
I've been listening to "In My Room" all day and watching this is like pulling the curtain back on the Wizard of Oz only to find a real deal wizard.

right? :D
Those initial chords are só warming, so chilly and full of love. The entire song is full of love.

Definitely! It's like the complete synthesis of all music the past 200 years. Just unreal and inspiring.
How does one guy have so much talent? This is mesmerising and he makes it look so effortless. He's a savant.
