Is This $20 Lamy 2000 Clone Any Good? Kaco Edge Fountain Pen Review

  • Want a Lamy 2000 fountain pen but don't want to spend over $120? The Kaco Edge ( amzn.to/2UZ62p9 ) is $20, has a Schmidt steel nib, and a Makrolon body (just like the L2K). This pen has some clear differences from Lamy's icon 2000 fountain pen, but it looks great on paper. Let's see how well it does in the real world.
More details about the Edge: unsharpen.com/...
I wasn't clear about this in the video, but the Kaco Edge uses standard international cartridges ( amzn.to/2VIWvQf ) like those from Pelikan or Schmidt.

Nice review, thanks. I love my Kaco Edge, been using it for months without any issue. But really: 1. It is clearly inspired by but not at all a clone of the Lamy 2000. Aside from the (apparently) makrolon material, and general shape, it is quite different. I point that out as some people MISTAKENLY assume Kaco is trying to pass this off as a 2000, which they are certainly not. 2. I got mine from Bobby on ebay for less than $13 delivered, including a (standard international I believe) converter. 3. The clip is really only a roll stop. People who insist on using it as a pocket clip report cracking on the cap. 4. For months, no problems, no hard starts even after a couple weeks without use. No skipping, pleasant to use. I don't post it at all - I don't post any pen at all.

Before you buy the Edge checkout the widely reported problem of cracked caps in the black and silver version. I find it offensive to suggest that users cause this problem by clipping or posting the pen. There is a manufacturing fault in many examples of this pen. Mine cracked within days of desk based use. I did not post or pocket clip the pen once. The retailer refused to replace or refund the pen in spite of photo evidence provided. Some report that later versions of the pen have solved the cracked cap problem. I wouldn’t trust it.

I recently bought a Kaco edge and it came with a converter. I am pretty happy with it, eventually I will save enough to afford the Lamy 200. Thanks for the comparison.

Sorry Sal, but you are doing this little pen a disservice by calling it a clone of the Lamy 2000. The Lamy has a hooded 14K gold nib, a brushed stainless steel grip section, and is a piston filler. The Edge has a standard steel nib, black aluminum grip section, and is a cartridge/converter type. Other than being silver colored, the clips are totally different, with that of the Edge being absolutely worthless. The only similarity is the basic exterior shape and Makrolon material. A known issue is that some of these pens have had cracks develop in the cap.
I got one for $10 shipped, with the two cartridges and a converter also. It came from Bobby at "office_supplies-pen" on eBay and are still available for less than $12. Mine is an extra-fine that has a bit of bounce, always starts up and doesn't dry out. I like the included cartridges but don't know where to get more. I think it's hard to go wrong with this pen as long as it doesn't crack, but how would you know ahead of time.
I hope you don't take this as criticism, as I just thought some points needed clarification. Thanks for the review Sal, and keep them coming.

The cartridge is similar to the Online pens cartridge. They look exactly like a Lamy cartridge but fit in backwards. In essence, they are standard international cartridges.
I own a Lamy 2000, it's amazing. Love the videos you keep making Sal.

The pen is made out of Makralon. While Kaco used Makralon to make the pen body, they likely used an inferior extrusion process since many people report the body cracking. Makralon may also come in varying qualities. Perhaps they got a bad batch.

I'm not sure the Kaco is the same quality of Makrolon as the Lamy 2000, as mine cracked in the cap and later cracked in the body. Even though the nib was scratchy, it just took 5 minutes of nib work to get it writing very nice. I liked the pen enough to order a second one, which still works great after several months and no cracks .(maybe my first one was just a dud) My big pet peeve with this pen is the awful clip. (making a gap with a metal file makes a huge difference. Maybe for KACO EDGE 2?)
So is this pen a Lamy 2000 replacement for the frugal pen fan? Kind of. It's not the same quality by a long shot, but it does feel like a 2000.
    Thanks for the review.
P.S. When i was cleaning my Lamy 2000, the Cap clutch ring fell off the table and i couldn't find it. (I'm sure this scene has played out in lots of 2000 owners homes) Later, my wife vacuumed the rugs and found the ring but didn't know what it was for, so she tossed it in the trash. (Arrrggghhh!!!)
I took a look at my cracked Kaco Edge's clutch ring. It looked about the same as the 2000 clutch ring, so i broke my Edge more to get the ring. (Warning: The Kaco Edge ring is embedded in the aluminum, so you'll have to destroy the front section to get it out. Why didn't Lamy do that?) Sure enough, the Kaco Edge clutch ring is a perfect fit in the Lamy 2000.
Thank you to Kaco for providing a perfect ring replacement for my Lamy 2000. Hmmm. These pens are more alike than i thought.

G'day Ben, one of my hobbies is fountain pen, as such I like to tinker with them. Quoting you: "My big pet peeve with this pen is the awful clip. (making a gap with a metal file makes a huge difference", its the same here with me; so I did something about it. I did exactly what you suggested with a metal file, from my other hobby - model building. With patience and persistence I managed to shape the inner edge of the clip like any normal clip, taking care not to scratch the cap surface. I can now put my Kaco Edge deep into my shirt pocket and no one would be the wiser, unless one owns a Kaco Edge. To date I have not had any cracking issues with mine....fingers crossed. Thought I share this with you.

@@Richard1855 Great work Richard. Glad you like the pen. I'm hoping Kaco will do a new version of the EDGE with a new clip. It's a good pen that can be made better with just a little alteration.

@@benwrites7649 Couldn't agree with you more. Prior to buying this EDGE, I did a bit of research into Kaco and found that they are an innovative company that take a lot of care and consideration into their design and manufacturing process. I bought it despite another blogger mentioning the difficulty of carrying it in the shirt pocket (I do with my pens), because its other features far out weighed this "slight" drawback. As I was patiently and diligently filing and modifying the clip, I had A LOT of time to think and was puzzled why Kaco did not take it account to make the clip more user friendly. I also thought perhaps they did, and on balance took the view that majority of pen users do not carry it in their shirt pocket (men of course), but in an EDC pen pouch which in turn predominantly sits in their bag or handbag(in the case of ladies). I must admit the design of this pen does look beautiful and sharp as it is, but like they say, there is always room for improvement and Ben, you might just get a new version with an improved clip yet.

God I love my Edge so much. I was disappointed to learn that Makrolon is just a brand name of polycarbonate, and not some obscure material. Also, I'd LOVE to be able to get these nibs separately, or on a pen costing less. I'm going to test whether cheaper Kaco pens write similarly, because I really want to swap these nibs into lots of things.

Greetings fellow pen lovers. Just as an update. I purchased two black Kaco Edge fountain pens in November 2020. I was hoping that the defective cracking cap issue had been addressed. The pen seemed to be well made.
After gently using both pens very sparingly, I put them away in my desk draw. In January 2021, I noticed both pens were developing cracks along the cap!
I attempted to contact the seller, but he is no longer available and it is no longer in stock. I attempted to contact Kaco directly by email but did not receive any reply.
Amazon at least finally issued a refund to me.
    Buyer beware.
I strongly urge you to not buy this pen.........what a disappointment. Buyer beware!

Mine has a crack in the cap - which seems to be what ends up happening with this pen. Many reviewers express doubt about whether it's really made of Makrolon at all. The clip is useless.

It's thought they've fixed this--far fewer reports lately at least, and mine's going strong 6-months in of non-gentle usage. Fingers crossed...but even if it fails, I love the nib and will transfer it to something nicer.

I think people who say it is not a close are confusing the term with the world counterfeit, which this is not, but for a clone. Yeah, they made a few changes, but overall can say it is very heavily influenced by the Lamy, and they tried to copy it pretty close, and it seems to work in its own way, which may not be as desirable as the original product they are trying to compete with, but is its own thing.

Hi! Thanks for the review. I think this pen's nib provide a nice writing experience. However there are some problems with the cap material. Mine cracked and I think I was one of the first people reporting that on my RUclips channel and I got immediately messages from other users saying the same happened to them. So, it means it was not my pen that had a defect, but it is a problem of this model. If you want you can watch my Pen Failure video about the Kaco Edge.
    Keep on making these videos!

The Kaco writes well but is a crappy pen: the cap of mine cracked completeley after a month of use, the whole inside metal liner coming out. In my experience totally useless.

    • @tomasgimenez3199
      @tomasgimenez3199 5 лет назад

It started showing a small crack after a couple of weeks use (no jamming) so when it was empty I decided to store it in my pen drawer. When I took it out again after a month and uncapped it, it cracked completely and the metal cap liner fell out. Very poor material.
