  • This is a video review of the new-for-2024 Zebra Sarasa Grand, called the Vintage Renewal. It's still basically a metal Sarasa Clip, but...
    - the clip was lowered so you won't hit it when you click the pen
    - the Renewal model is 5g lighter than the original Sarasa Grand
    - it's now sold in 0.3mm and 0.5mm widths
    - the writing tip extends a bit further
    - the center of gravity is lower
    The Sarasa Grand is still available for under $10 ( amzn.to/443MssM ) which is a very good deal, but I'd recommend spending a bit more and getting a Renewal model.
    It's a very nice upgrade on a solid pen.

    I have a few of the Sarasa Grand (Silver trim), I've been writing with them for a few years. The ink is one of my favorites. I wasn't bothered by any of the issues that they fixed. The clip is strange, but I was used to clicking it with the side of my thumb. They should have just put a normal clip on the old design. The new bezel at the top of the clip looks weird. My issues were that the clicker top cover would fly off and I had to super glue them on and the ink on some refills would leak from the tip, about 1 in 20. The ink is great, the pen design is a good length and perfect diameter otherwise blah design. They should have put a normal clip on it and a better clicker top.

    The devil's in the details. Thanks for the list of changes. I like their vintage inks, especially green black and brown black.
    Great review.

    👍I love the Sarasa Grand-I have the metalic blue-I also hate the clip so I changed with a spare I had in my desk drawer-I like the weight-it's a juicy writer.

    I always thought that the clip being higher was a feature. That way it doesn't click on the go by mistake and doesn't mark up the inside of your bag. The weight distribution I find to be the most alluring update. The heavier brass is tiring to hold upright. So the lower center of gravity is much more comfortable.

      Interesting take but I’d guess you are in the minority (if you like the old style). I think they are still selling the old style if you prefer it!

    I prefer the standard Sarasa Grand because I don't like the gold trim. I also like that the standard one is heavier, I prefer pens in the 1 oz region. I just switched the standards clip with the F-701 (I don't have a 401) and I think both pens improved not just in looks but also function. The F-701 with it's induistrial design, can better use the ability to clip on thicker objects, while the Grand doesn't have that flaw of the clip getting in the way of the knock.
    If only Zebra would make a pen that is exactly like the F-701, but take refills that the G-350 can, that would be awesome! Maybe call it the G-701, or Sarasa Steel, S-701or maybe just straight up Sarasa-701.

    The old barrel design is beautiful except for that incongruous clip. It's the angle of the clip that bothers me, better to make it parallel to the body so it doesn't protrude too much. It's affordable but that clip design prevents me from buying it.

    Thanks for the review, love the Sarasa Grand. Does it still fit Pentel Energel refills?

    • @Somnogenesis
      @Somnogenesis 3 месяца назад +2

      As the video says, it comes with the exact same refill as before, the Zebra JF-05. These are perfectly interchangeable with Energel refills, so guaranteed the new Sarasa Grand Renewal will take the Pentel refills just like the older versions do!
      Edit: refills not recipe 🤣

      @@Somnogenesis Do you know if it takes pilot juice up refills?

    • @Somnogenesis
      @Somnogenesis Месяц назад +1

      @@journalologyandcoofficial That's an interesting question, I'd not come across those before! Looking it up, the Juice Up has the same diameter (6mm) and the same length (112mm) as the Pentel (e.g. the standard Energel LR7 refill), so it _ought_ to fit.
      As ever with these types, though, it would come down to the vagaries of the shape of the shaft of the refill near the tip - i.e. the way the 'shoulders' step down, in one or more increments, from the full width of the main barrel of the refill to its narrowest part at the tip.
      I _suspect_ the Sarasa Grand isn't that 'fussy'; in other words it is likely to take the Juice Up refill, purely based on looking at some pictures of the latter. But without trying it all I can really say is "probably"...!

    The real question is, why they did not think about the clip placement in the first place? Why did it have to take them 7 years to fix it???

    • @Somnogenesis
      @Somnogenesis 3 месяца назад +2

      It was certainly a 'bold' stylistic choice, but yes you'd think someone would've thought about the ergonomics a bit sooner..!

    I like the 5 grans lighter but the clip uhh ygly best is if they put same clip as on f701 but in gold as that clip when pen is places in shirt pocket it is flushed and pen doesnt stick out

    Hey Sal, not sure if you have picked up what appears to be a new Jetstream prime. This is a twist version and is perfectly balanced and takes a G2 refill. Kind of a win all around

  • @Korone-sama
    @Korone-sama 2 месяца назад

    I daily carry a Grand Vintage in navy blue (with Jetstream refill) and yes at first the clip does get pretty annoying but overtime I accept it as a quirk of the pen. The diversity of refill option sells it for me

      @@journalologyandcoofficial Pilot refills doesn't work with the Sarasa Grand because their tip shaft is thicker than most refills in that form factor (Euro style).
