  • This is a review of the Pentel Mattehop ( amzn.to/3JZ5W8P ), a super cool gel pen with a flat matte ink that really impressed me... despite really not being the sort of thing I'm into.

I just got a set of these yesterday. Perfect timing ! Like the matte finish and the 1.0 is a smooth write. Really happy with them.
    Consistently great reviews !

Good find, I like a new pen and I think Pentel are my favourite, though they run close with Pilot
We do get these in the UK (though I have never come across them before) , Cult Pens have them for £2.60 ea or a full set of 8 for £20 (saving 8-p / 10p ea)
There blurb says - A step up from a standard gel pen, the Pentel Mattehop offers brilliantly smooth, high opacity ink that gives a matte, plastic finish when dry.
Also suitable for photographic and coated paper and works well as a drawing or colouring pen.
There also seems to be a set of "sweet" colours.
I have been watching you for a good while, but I don't really comment on YT. One idea, it would be good to see how the pens you test cope with cheap printer / everyday paper. That seems to be where mine struggle and start feathering or bleeding through.
Well done on maintaining your enthusiasm for pens. I do worry about how many pens you have sitting around with the ink going past its optimal viscosity. But then I do worry about the most random things.

Good call on the copy paper testing. I have a lot of fun paper so sometimes miss the basics.
And yes, I worry about the age of many of my pens as well. I guess when you collect expensive pens you can change the refills but when you love cheap pens you have concerns like this! I try to gift them and am thinking of other solutions. I’m concerned with ink formulations being changed and feeling like, oh wow that pilot acro 2022 ink vintage was the best but now 2024 is bad haha

Ah, I try to avoid amazon . Multi packs are often a very cheap way to pick up pens but how many yellow pens can your bottom drawer take. Though given your username yellow is probably a good colour for you!@@banana_necessary

@unsharpen Thanks, I am sure someone said I was full of something like good ideas before - though I may have misheard.
Exactly, gifting cheap pens is a tough call though (but you probably don’t mean the whole gift wrapping thing). My own way is to stop buying for a while - but, it is very unsatisfying. I am now collecting "finished pens of 2024." A pen club would be a good way to share them round. But could you really put a call out to spend a Saturday morning once a month meeting up to check out each other’s collections and trading pens with each other.
It hadn’t crossed my mind that others would be concerned about changing ink formulation. I am glad someone is. It is a moving feast, especially for oil-based pens, is a 2 year-old pen going to be representative of ink the manufacturer intended you to experience? Was it better in 2022, has this ink dried up? These are questions that occupy too much space in my mind. Some people think that such thoughts don’t matter, but what do they know? On this very topic I was most disappointed when Pilot changed the ink in the Hi-Tecpoint (your Precise), they got rid of that lovely inky smell, presumably making it a water based ink, I am still looking for that old school ink smell, the closest I have found is Diamine Registrar’s Ink but it isn’t quite the full experience.
Keep on making you entertaining and information videos there are one of the only reasons to watch RUclips.

Great breakdown about the Mattehops, I'll get them in the future when I have a Black Midori Notebook (only have blue/grey atm) for testing them. Also, could you do a video on comparing the saturation of gel pen inks specifically: Uni One, Sharpie S-Gel, Sakura Gelly Roll, Pentel Energel, and Kokuyo pens (I all have them in 0,5 but other sizes would be appreciated also).

Does it write on shiny non porous materials like plastic, glass, or metal?

      @unsharpen  2 месяца назад

No not really. For that you want the felt tip paint marker. It did write on the black plastic material in the video but it slugged little after drying
