  • The Ohio Department of Agriculture, which is investigating an accident involving the Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster at Cedar Point, gave new details today regarding the situation that sent a Michigan woman in the hospital.
"The day of the event, the ride inspector verbally issued a stop operation order on the ride and placed a lock on it," said David Miran, Chief of the Amusement Rides Safety Division for the Ohio Department of Agriculture." ODA inspected the track and all trains on the ride. The piece that struck the woman is an L-shaped bracket, approximately the size of an adult male’s hand. It’s known as a flag plate. It communicates to the ride’s operating system that the particular train is through a portion of the track. In ODA’s inspection, it discovered that the green train was missing the plate on the left side of the train body. Half of the bolts, which secured the plate to the train body, were still in place. The track on which the train returns near the finish line - what is called the brake bracket area - shows signs of impact and deformation. Several horizontal track beams show signs of impact within approximately 25 feet of the damaged brake bracket. ODA is investigating the cause of how and when the plate disconnected from the ride and the damage that occurred to the track. The train has been sent to a laboratory to examine the bolts, which remain in the train body and ODA is awaiting a report from that testing laboratory.

Just 3 days before this accident, I was at Cedar Point and the dragster wasn't operating and there where people working on it. Never could have imagined that this is what would come of it...

Im ngl putting the line in the middle of the ride was a horrible idea. Kingda ka would never have a problem like this because the queue is away from the coaster. Maybe if they want either make the queue completely indoors, or take the queue and build it somewhere else, not next to the coaster.

I think that they are moving the queue to the outside of the ride safer than where the current queue is.

Eyesore? The thing is fricking beautiful and loved. This is a freak accident. Far more dangerous to get in an automobile. Possibly create more separation between people and the coaster.

@Kenneth Artz Well---looks like the state regulation failed us again, right?
We don't need regulation. We don't need a baby sitter. We need a good court system and the interest with those involved, that is it.
There is nobody more dysfunctional than a state worker. That is why they got a job with the state. That is why this ride failed. We depend on people who can't think, and you think it is needed. This guy reads like a 3rd grade kid. Or is that a college graduate today?

    • @EarthSurferUSA

Because they are guaranteed a tax payer paid job as we get more and more food from china. Mexico, etc., etc..
What I don't understand is if what we do is government regulated, and it fails, why is it not the regulators who get sued? They took on the responsibility, right?

@Kenneth Artz well, the insurance company would only be kicking in 1.5m towards any potential settlement or judgment. If 3 or 4 people are legitimately injured and each have a rightful claim that ends up in a trial award then the insurance company probably won't pay since they would claim the ride wasn't maintained properly. Honestly, I can't really think of a scenario where the ride breaks and the insurance company WONT argue its not their fault.

@@EarthSurferUSA Because in Ohio they used to send inspectors only once a year....not every day.
Besides, even with the twice-a-year rule, it was last inspected in May, before the season opened and well before the busy time of year, when coasterfanboys demand it run 24/7 so they can ride it as much as they can, get pissed whenever it breaks down for maintenance or weather, and run the coaster ragged until incidents like these happen.
Anyway, care to explain Ohio Law 993.08? Do you think ordinary people who are not *employed by the evil government* are exempt from law?

      @ Cinder Ace.
      Exceptionally good point you make.
(I guess CORN or SUGAR SNAP PEAS are now growing on roller coaster tracks? For the "Agriculture Dept" to be in charge).
      Why?
Is Dept of Ag in charge of a structure that is designed by world class architects, has electronics and devices that are akin to NASA technology and goes faster than Dale Earnhardt Jr?
      Here is why.
Government and "state politicans" assign this to those they wish to.
      (Aka: YOUR TAX DOLLARS...AT WORK).
Same as why does a state licensing agency oversee the inner workings of a day care? (Not ONE ever "works" in a daycare. Nope. They are simply "box checkers" doing an apes job...paid by US whom still pay taxes.) They are USELESS. as is this Dept of Ag-led "investigation"
Or why does the government charge 400 dollars for a hammer to be used by the military? And is "monitored by the Finance Committee"? (Those jokers aren't "monitoring" ANYTHING.
      And they never will.
For something like this freak happenstance occurrence here to be properly inspected and addressed? You need engineers and electricians and structural designers.
      NOT government workers.
      (They will assuredly...screw it up)

This is the best indication of the slow deterioration of the infrastructure in all areas of are life ... There were people in the not to distant past , managers and maintenance people who cared for what they did , took ownership for what they were responsible for and made sure all things worked ...

@@waddles6139 Yes, but they test the ride each morning before opening for a reason. If anything audibly wrong is heard, it will have to be investigated. This is why TTD doesn't always open when the park opens.

Bingo man. And after the government regulates such things,---they fail to take the responsibility when it fails. If they force their regulation on private business, they should be the first ones sued "when" things go wrong.

Look at this guy. Not only can he not make a dime in the free market,--he can barely read. That is your non-accountable government regulator.
I would not let these people regulate the use of a wheelbarrow.
