Cedar Point investigation: New details on Top Thrill Dragster incident

- We're learning more about the accident at Cedar Point that sent a Michigan woman to the hospital after she was struck in the back of the head by a small metal object, which came off of a Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster train while she waited in line.
The situation is currently under investigation by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, which inspects all amusement rides statewide. David Miran, Chief of the Amusement Rides Safety Division for ODA, offered some new details during a press conference Monday afternoon.
ODA takes very seriously the safety of all amusement rides in the state and we are conducting a thorough investigation of the ride. As you know, ODA was called to Cedar Point after a piece of the ride came off and hit a woman in the back of the head. We are terribly sorry for the woman and her family who endured this tragic event. We have no update on her condition, but we did speak with the family today to update them on the status of our investigation.

There has been an abnormal number for amusement park accidents this year. I wonder if a loss of mechanics/inspectors (who took their institutional knowledge with them) during the 2020 year where so few parks operated has had something to do with it.
Yes, many parks have been dealing with plenty of staffing issues due to COVID which is most likely the culprit of so many accidents this year. You could even say some accidents are due to the rides being idle and not in use for so long during the peak of the pandemic.
COVID and a lack of use/maintenance is to blame. 6FGA and El Toro/Jersey Devil both suffered accidents or shutdowns. It is sad that the news is going after coasters and putting them in a bad light.
Yes it’s unfortunate she got hurt and I feel for her and the family but this couldn’t be predicted due to a pandemic taking place. Just a string of misfortunes.
More than likely yes
The "Covid Nonsense Factor" is what this is.
Short staffing, target large industries and conglomerates that employ 48k people (Cedar Fair employs 48K+)...is EXACTLY "the target".
And a 123 mph Thrill ride? In a WORLD CLASS Amusement park? With UBER-insurance money backing it?
Is like a sitting duck with a 🎯 on its broad feathers.
Every single DAY at every single amusement park or some "Carny Run" fair...has SOMEONE get injured or sick from a ride.
Hell...SOMEONE..somewhere (right now) is likely "getting whiplash" on "The Daniel Tiger Train Car Ride at Idlewild Park".
We live now...in a "litiguous society" (because folks WON'T go and GET a job...and use their Biden Handout money for 'a let's go to the park and sue em" sense of being.
Very sad.
Go and GET a job you people.
Rather than government paying you to NOT work...perhaps they could FORCE YOU...TO WORK.
This way? They make more money (government feasts on it) and the sublimely ridiculous "sue happy" cancel culturists could have something BETTER TO DO...Than dream up causes to take down a 48,000 employed entity?
Just saying.
We all want this lady to recover. Anyone saying less than that is ignorant.
But this whole thing WREAKS of crapola. Either that "L Shaped Bracket" was tinkered, tampered with, or simply was weakened due to "shortage of people there to INSPECT IT"...or someone is lying.
Either way? Cedar Point is going to PAY OUT millions for a FREAK happenstance.
Pretty soon? If this stuff continues? Ya gonna have to spend your days "in your backyard or den" with about 5 friends that you can actually trust not to "sue you" because they are "allergic to fire pits or don't like your Night of the Living Dead poster hanging in your den..because they find it offensive".
Either way? Sadly...I don't see Cedar Point surviving this...long term.
Not during the "cancel culturist 2020-2029 decade".
Just PAY OUT your tens of millions Cedar Point. (Cause you KNOW some leech lawyer is gonna bloodsuck ya dry...even IF you are not at fault...and a "class action lawsuit" will play on some infomercial until the end of time (like that mesothelioma or "you weren't warned enough that SMOKING was bad"...so call "1-800-SUE-EMAL(L)" and get your "payout".
Welcome...to "the world as it is now".
Ridiculous.

@@YT-MasterAdmin pretty much yea
just say Cedar Point, CP sounds very bad
I'd called a metal fatigue... Not to uncommon with machines that endure that kind of abuse daily. Now I'm speculating but I would bet its 1 of 2 things... #1 It was a hairline fracture from all the vibration knowing that half the bolts were still in place or #2 the tolerances between the sensors and that bracket are very very small, possibly the vibration from the ride made them touch and break. My Heart and prayers goes out the woman and her family..
Even if there is a fracture in the part that shouldn't cause the piece to be launched at high speed, it would just fall off since these sensors are optical I believe and not meant to make contact with the ride. Something must have caused it to come into contact with the train for it to break off in this manner
I agree with your analysis
@@techied optical sensors seem way too complicated. Magnetic would be much more simple. Especially since Intamin hired IntraSys GmbH to do the magnetic braking and roll back systems.

What does Amusement Parks and Agriculture have to do with each other?
Because they need a job. You get a job with the state if you can't make money in the free market. It is like a federal welfare system really, and sometime they do work, and sometimes they do a good job. But mostly, they are overhead and a waste of tax payer money.
The Department of Agriculture oversees Fair Rides and I'm guessing when Theme Parks became a thing their rides were similar to Fair rides so that's what they were considered which means they are both overseen by the same agency. That may not make sense now days but that's just how things were done a long time ago and laws like that don't usually get changed.

Probably not the best idea to route the queue so close to and at a lower level than the brake run. I know they don't allow loose articles, but someone's lost phone or glasses could hit a person like a rock at speed.
Worst part is they don't allow phones and stuff but that dosnt prevent people from bringing them! Or they could definitely upgrade the nets and other protection equipment as well because parks are aware that things like this do happen on occasion!

I was there on opening weekend of that ride with my parents...never got to ride as it broke during the first non-rider test drive. So, more surprised something hadn't happened sooned.
Never confuse an accident with a broke down, you're clearly now aware on how coasters work, a broken down ride means that the safety systems are working correctly, shutting down the ride if the computer finds some erroros, also, top thrill dragster uses a very complicated launch system that is not reliable, and with reliable i mean that it needs tons of maintnance to operate so it's not rare to find it broken down, it's just the way it is.
So nothing of that has to do with the accident.
This accident is something should never happen of course but it doesn't mean that coasters aren't safe, indeed, the probability of dying on a roller coasters are the same as dying while fishing, yes, fishing, it means that the most dangerous thing about going in theme parks is the actual driving to the park itself... (i don't want to say that what happened wasn't important of course, i just to put it into a wider context).
