in North America its BFD 9.9 & it has #2 Philips not Hex. The engine I did this on idk when it was opened last BUT a screw stripped ! To my dismay.. (even tho got the warning here - the screw driver tips were warping and the last screw didnt come out ! ) I had an extractor set that I got a decade ago from China. At first it seemed like it wasnt going to work, the #2 double stripped ! But went up 1 size, and very slowly let it bite in, and it came out ! The OIL filter needed 25ft/lbs at least. Luckily I had a 3 jaw adjustable filter wrench, and it worked (2.25-4.25inch). A measuring funnel with twist off ..helps a lot too. Im traumatized after doing this.
Service kits I have bought from the outboard agents. If you know the part numbers you can buy individual parts through the internet as often parts like the oil filters are used in other motors not just that outboard and can work out to be cheaper.
Hi Troj. Great video. I am a novice boat fisherman and am on a budget so like to diy if I can. I have a 4 stroke 30hp Mercury out board on my boat and need to change the plugs. I notice from the manual that there is a recommended gap for the plugs. Are all plugs of same manufacturer not the same?
No there are many different plugs from the same manufacturer. The manual should tell you what plugs and gap to use. You can check the number on the plugs in the engine, or just google search your engine, there should be a serial plate on your engine this will tell you the age of your engine.
I wish you'd said the size of the O Ring at 15:40 instead of same size as Diving Tanks. I told the Hardware Store Employee I needed O Rings the same as on a Diving tank and he didn't k ow what size to sell me. Next time tell us what size Please. Or Reply with the size!
Yes I do mine every 2 seasons. I keep an eye on it and have a spare impeller if i need it but usually when the water slows its more likely to be salt build up.

Great video. Don't forget to change the water pump impeller, which you need to take the bottom leg off to get to it. It's not a difficult job, but with no water circulating it wont matter what oil you use!! I would also change the thermostat, plate and gasket every year. Have you ever changed the impeller? Maybe do a video on that?

I have a 16 displacement open Plymouth pilot style boat ( ruclips.net/video/y_Q5pcYEBT4/видео.html ) I used to have a 15hp on it but it did not make any difference in speed and just caused the stern to push lower in the water. It also used more fuel. The 10hp works better on my boat and the high thrust prop helps against the strong tides.
The engine had a stripped nut when it arrived I let the company know but said it was ok and just replaced it. It would seem who ever tightened them may have done the same inside the engine. I would rather not name the company as I believe it was as employee who had assembled the engine that was at fault
Hard to say it always gets started up at the beginning of the season flushed at the end. Then sometimes I use it on the dinghy to go fishing. If I don't use it I start it a couple of times during the season but in a bucket of fresh water so saltwater is not sitting in it for long periods of time.
I don't fully remember it was something like 20hrs no more than half speed then oil, oil filter change. I know you should vary the speed. It says in the Manuel or paperwork when you buy them
Great video very helpful, I have the same motor on a 14'' river boat. Just bought, apparently serviced, but keeps cutting out as I give it revs (on remotes). Changed the o/s fuel line which didn't have jubilee clips. But still not very good. As if starved of fuel.... Boats huh.
@@Trojwaterman I had the same problem with my 2018 20 hp Honda. Everytime I try to rev it past 1/2 throttle it act like it not getting fuel. After about 1/2 hour it cleared up. I probably let it sit to long & gas must of gunked-up in the jets.
Hi Troj. Love your work. Very thorough explanation. I have just bought a new (for me) 2003 honda 10 for use as an auxiliary motor on my trailer sailor yacht. It hasn't had a lot of use from it previous owner (maybe 300hrs) and has been well looked after. I was curious as to why you upgraded to you new Honda. Was it because of run hrs, or a problem or just peace of mind?? I will be only using the motor to get in and out of harbour or if there is not wind, but its a bit tricky to sail back to the dock. Interested in why you changed and any experience on longevity of the 10's. I have been told that they should go for a long time providing the oil & servicing is kept up regularly. I put 600+ hrs on my previous Tohatsu 6hp Sail Pro but I killed it by hitting the ground while trailering. Ouch.
Mainly for Piece of mind. Its my main engine. We have very fast tides here and I operate among many rocks plus the weather can change real quick. I will thinking about trading in again soon
Only if you do something stupid. If the engine has a major fail unrelated to your service its still under warranty. You always have that 1st year warranty. If you are taking out a extended warranty then you will probably be dropping your engine into the mechanics every year anyway. When I have ever taken in any engine after 1 year I have always had to pay for everything so I am not to worried about a warranty. In the end its my life on the line at sea so I will make sure I have done a proper job and continue to keep an eye on my engine & do what needs doing.
@@Trojwaterman The same as, when your life depend's on it best you learn as much as you can about your life support systems/outboard/inboard engine's, before going to sea, the mechanic will not be with you at sea to help you.
There are many things which will void your warranty. After the first year your warranty is pretty much worthless with all the get out clauses unless you have a major parts fail or manufacturing fault which is always covered regardless. Like I have said I value my safety more than a warranty. If anyone is that worried about there warranty Im sure they will be taking there engine to a certified Honda mechanic and that's up to them.
Do not deviate from the oil that the manufacturers use. I know engines very well. I am certified in outboard repair. Feel good ideas about crankshaft and bearing clearances do not impress. They recommended that weight oil across the life of the engine. They don’t test a motor for 10 hours and call it good. They punish engines way beyond what we use them. I like your video but I have seen good units blown up because the owner thought they were helping it. Happy boating my friend.
I started doing my own engines after 3 seasons using certified mechanics and having my engines break down the very next season. This certainly does not mean they are all bad but it did become a gamble and its my neck on the line when fishing in these extreme tides. Its not based on feel good ideas. I still use certified oils just the viscosity changes as environment conditions will vary affecting the oil along with engine tolerances changing over time with wear. I would always say do what the manufactures do at very least until you have done a thorough investigation into any changes you may make.
Trojs Fishing Yes I do understand that. I have dealt with some in the business that shouldn’t be working on a tricycle much less a outboard. The ones that are too lazy to do the job right and lie to the customer make the rest of us look like a bunch of criminals. I only do service for friends and family, I got out of it because I didn’t want to be associated with the title holders of a marine mechanic. I work in process controls and safety systems for a refinery now. I wish y’all the best. And as I said before my friend, happy boating. 👍✌️
They do but but unfortunately a lot of decisions made these days are based on a financial one. One thing I have noticed on my newest outboards now is it says oil either 10w 30 or 10w 40 which is what we have said for years as that decision is decided by the environment in which the outboard operates.
gear oil smell horrible especially out of old vans 😂 I recently had s old scrap gearbox in bk of my fishing van the oil spilt out in the bk and can not get rid of the smell for nor money

Depends on how often you use it but once a year some parts I do every 2 years.

I believe its about 250ml which is 1 tube when I have changed it.

Sometimes but not these they have always had the correct gap. I did have a look when they arrived off camera.

The plugs are small. NGK CR5EH9

Might be the jets the four strokes have such fine tolerance. You also have to be careful not to have even the slightest bit of water in the tank.
