Growing Tobacco in Containers

  • This year we're trying our hand at growing 12 tobacco plants under optimum conditions, by using containers and closely managing them on a daily basis. In a grid-down scenario, tobacco would have many uses, including barter currency.

Cutting the leaf stops the leaf from growing but keeps it alive for photosynthesis. Which is good for your propagation. It will focus more energy into letting them spread roots instead of making that leaf bigger. Good looking plants!

Please consider companion gardening tactics for hornworms. Marigold flowers tend to repel the hornworm, plant the marigold next to the tobacco. I hope this helps.

Its weird cuz I got some Americana 572 seeds and those plants are angry. No insect or human dare touch them. The runoff water makes you nicotine sick. Other plants around it absorb the nicotine and also become... angry. I have to wear gloves when working with it, especially when its wet.

Tobacco is in the nightshade family, thus a relative of tomatos. A 13-13-13 fertilizer is good. Epsom salts help a lot. Mulch them too.

Tobacco itself is related but doesn't produce tomatoes. Its probably the hungriest plant I ever had, specifically with nitrogen. It has big green solar panels and all it wants is a metric ton of nitrogen. Thats the difficulty with growing it in pots. It's possible but it's gonna need high frequency fertigation around august.

@@superkoopatrooper4879 From what I read the ideal soil should be always a bit nitrogen-hungry, especially to the harvest. The leaf is not thin, is more aromatic etc.

I think that the roots are getting hot cuz they are in black pots. If the plant was in the ground the roots are protected from getting tonhot and to cold. The leaves can handle alot but the roots cant.

My Swedish ancestors grew tobacco in southern Wisconsin. I understand there’s some varieties that can grow nicely in Sweden but I can’t remember the names of them or where they can be obtained. My maternal greatness grandfather grew tobacco for a cigar filler and w inner wrap. , and Swedish varieties tobacco for his personal use, snus.
His son was more a dairyman when I was born. The curing barns were still standing.
This is my first year. Growing in the American Pacific Northwest. They now are 3cm across.
They probably will be in large containers to mature so I can move them around to find the best spot.

cutting the ends off of the leaves shocks them into promoting more growth to the roots. When you make cuttings and want to root them you cut a few of the bottom leaf's like that and use a dab of root hormone

I just subscribed ❤️ I was just telling my husband we need to just grow our own tobacco (mostly for the animals bc it is a natural dewormer), but also bc he still sneaks a cigarette every now and then when he's stressed (as if I don't know) 🤣. Today's commercial cigarettes are filled w all sorts of nasty additives and I'd feel so much better about him sneaking a smoke if I knew he was not getting a ton of cancer along w it!

If you're into Nicotiana rustica strains one I highly recommend growing is the Mopan Mayan strain. It has a nice flavor and aroma and the nicotine content is closer to the percentage of a commercial Nicotiana tobacum strain at 2.8%. Instead of the typical 9% or more for other Nicotiana rustica strains so it's a good Nicotiana rustica strain to start with and it's one of my favorites.

If you grow on the east side of a building or set of trees itll get that early morning sun and when the heat of the day sets in theyll be in shade. You can set up a some taller fencing as well and plant on the east side. Just a tip to add. Also only transplant once from the initial container to its final.

I grow marijuana and if I wait with fertilizer until there yellow, the end product will have much lower quality. so if I know that they need it once a week, and start to yellowing, I give then fertilizer 2 days before. Every time any plant stresses they lose quality. They will gain back their look and even look better if you wait with water and fertilizer, so they are yellow, but the end result will suffer.
