Talleyrand as always before and after this saw a chance for greatness - Likely in his own mind, by recommending Napoleon, he saw opportunity. If Napoleon succeeded he could use the argument that he was a keyplayer in Napoleon's rise of power. Talleyrand has always been described as a man that went where the wind blew, no matter the regime. He likely understood that Napoleon would seize power at some point. Talleyrand the slippery snake...
Interesting note not covered here. Napoléon’s “We’ll see,” response to Bernadotte’s prediction of a guillotining was reportedly one of the most nervous & sheepish moments of the Emperor’s documented life.
For all his stunning bravery in the battlefield on a moments notice, both here & during the assembly, he appears to have lost, or very nearly lost, his nerve.

Joseph Fouché was not one of Napoleon's Marshal but he served Napoleon as his Minister of Police until 1810 when him and Talleyrand (Foreign Minister) attempted to overthrow Napoleon and remplace him with Murat in 1808/1809. According to most historians these men have a political intelligence and lucidity that many men in Napoleon's entourage did not have.

Barras affair with Josephine was one of the reasons he was known and give the army of Italy so you could say Napoleon may have never became “Napoleon” if it wasn’t for Josephine’s… “skills”. ….

Hey Tubby and Jack! I wrote a comment about 2 months ago explaining how my dad was dying of brain cancer and that you guys have a great comfort for me throughout the whole process. Now, I’m sad to say that my dad did end up passing away on the 16th of April. His last words were an “I love you” to me, and this statement was indicative of our relationship. He and I would watch history documentaries together all the time, including Epic History TV. And it makes my day every time I see you guys react to one of their videos. It makes me feel like I’m back with my Dad and having a great time learning about history with him again. And I can feel the brotherly love between Tubby and Jack there as well. As for my Dad, he will get his final wish of “becoming a redwood tree” soon on the 14th of June, and will become one with nature again. He passed way too early at the age of 59, and I can only hope to make him proud and become half the man he was. I can only imagine that Tubby must have felt a similar way after the passing of his mother, and that he’s always doing his best to make her proud. We’ll get through this together Tubby, and we’ll come out stronger than ever from it. I’m glad to see you smiling and having fun again, and I’m starting to do the same now as well. Please take of yourselves Lazydaze family, be safe and know that I love you all and that fun times lay ahead of us ❤
Also, yes, I did get to be there when my dad passed. My family and I randomly arrived at his room in hospice right before he passed. It was almost like he was waiting on us just before passing on. And extended family had also just randomly showed up at the same time, including his mother, brother, sister-in-law, and others. And I must state that we really all had no idea that he would pass away so soon. The nurses all told us that he still had days left. So, this was truly a shock and completely random that everyone got to be there to witness it. I got to stare into his eyes and play with his hair as he passed on, while my sister and brother held his hand. It was truly a gift that I will never forget.
Both you and Tubby will get through this together and with the support of the LazyDaze Family! it takes time but we have to move forward for them as standing still would just make them upset from wherever they are watching. We are happy you got to be there when He sadly passed away but surrounded by his family you will make him proud so go after what ever your dreams are you can do it!

Then we must remember that France, in equality with Russia, had by far the largest number of inhabitants in Europe at that time. The two alone make up half of the European population.
Conscription was therefore very effective.
Interesting point to think about
I think Talleyrand deserves the title "most slippery bastard in history". He consecutively served the old french monarchy, the radical revolutionaries, the directory, and Napoleon, then conspired with the coalition against France to put the House of Bourbón back on the throne - which he then served as well, representing France at the Council of Vienna.
I don’t like Talleyrand, but I cannot deny his brilliance.
The man betrays everyone he ever works for or with, yet he keeps finding employment.
@@CMY187 Thats because he is too good at his job and always had France's best interest at heart. Everyone understood that Talleyrand was not stupid enough to hitch his destiny to failing regimes, his methods were how you survived in such a chaotic period

Another interesting thing I read about is when Napoleon returned he was going to divorce Josephine but he said himself it was the children. Crying. He couldn’t leave them he knew he had to stay. Interesting

I think conscription should be mandatory, or something that the gov can force if it needs to. Its just reasonable imo to expect from people to defend the country they live in. If one benefits from being part of a society, there should also be a duty to defend its existence. The countrys existence is literally the basis for the society that you are a part of, so neglecting defence of its existence is quite self-neglecting in that sense.
It's a tough balance though how much service is needed and at what age? Tubby can for sure say he was very rebellious when younger, as many people are today and would not want to join the military. This could cause mass ressentiment to the government and do the complete opposite of gaining a national pride which has been lost.
@@lazydazepodcast6052 I agree that the potential problem you paint there is important to consider. But I do also think that most people who refuse in such a scenario of crisis would be a minority. Most people I think would come together to resist a common enemy. Its quite natural. But its still a potential problem. Its also not like everyone is fit to do it, the gov will select those who it deems capable. So the people who absolutely shouldnt or cant makes no sense to force, I dont think the gov would need it anyway. But if one is capable I think there should be this patriotic duty.
