Nahre Sol is the host of Sound Field but is also known worldwide as a classically trained pianist and composer. As a soloist and chamber musician she has played across North America and Europe, and she teaches piano and music genres on her own RUclips channel @NahreSol
In this interview with Nahre Sol she answers viewer submitted questions. She also shows us where she practices and a behind the scenes tour of where she makes her videos.

Yeah, it's one of those things about people with actual talent. No matter how good you are, you end up judging your self against the best there is. And being talented, means you know EXACTLY how good the best are and that is often impossible to achieve. For them, the best is not just a compliment. They KNOW that "the best" is an honest accurate description.
It's true because she does more hard work than talent.
Talent is just something you're born with but the only way to do something that she does is through thousands of hours of practice :)

I think Nahre's willingness to step outside the stereotypical classical pianist's lane, experimenting with other genres, working just as happily with digital pianos, synths as well as acoustic grands, coming up with innovative exercises which sound good and motivate people. In a world where a lot of people look down on things outside their own comfort zones, she's successfully shaking things up and blurring the lines between genres, and that's why so many of us are drawn to her work.

Nahre in her groove is a language I barely comprehend. But when she's out of her comfort zone, she communicates raw and direct, with tons of insight and self-awareness. My two favorite examples are in the episodes Ballroom and the How Classical, R&B and Jass Musicians Play Differently. I learn by watching Nahre experience and express.
Teaming her and LA pretty much guarantees something new is going to happen.
Music becomes rather insular when you live in New York City. You know people who do the same sort of thing you do you keep up with what they are doing. Some classical patrons are snobs and think they are better than people who like other forms of music. I disagree about music being replaced in your life. I sang in a good choir that did not get paid. I know when I get depressed I have to go look for the music to get better. My theory is that we do not select music. It picks us and we have to follow wherever it takes us. Most talented people I have known listen much more widely than they perform. I love your music but I live for your exploring different types of music. You two have helped me come out of the depression. Thank you.

guitar rules
When you start out on an instrument at the age of whatever one digit number, it's quite unlikely that it'll stay your favourite instrument given that it was your favourite instrument to begin with. I started on clarinet when I was a child and now my favourite instrument to listen to is the oboe.
I play both but mostly self taught on guitar. I was pretty mobile for my 20's and an acoustic guitar is just more portable. And I got more work as a fill in guitarist than keyboardist. There is always someone who needs an acoustic guitar player for a small room. But every chance I got to play a decent piano was a joy.
It's not uncommon for people who've played an instrument for a long time.
I am also a pianist and composer and the piano is certainly not my favorite instrument to listen to, and/or write for.

When I was a kid I would see the music documentaries in PBS. They were the late 1970s documentaries that had so much green an orange lights, so they had a warm feeling to them to them.

I feel like she's the most important musician today, the curiosity of music and wanting to explore sounds, learn history and appreciate it makes me want to learn too

There are a lot of young people inspired by you, and also a lot of older people, many of whom completely understand and associate with staying alone in one room all day, but lack your talent and appeal. I have never heard anyone who could channel great composers. After seeing her videos, I automatically analyze every piece of music I hear.
Nahre really is a realistic + relatable role model for me. not in the usual way where talent and hard work and musicality is the sheer point of admiration (although, of course, i still do admire these things about her), but more so the way she approaches being a musician, rather than a pianist. im currently attending a conservatory for a piano performance degree, but often times find myself alienated by my relative lack of obsession with the instrument, and like Nahre I dont feel like im the most talented out of the bunch. i love music in all of its forms and genres, but i am there because piano happens to be the one thing i can do. it's comforting to know that it is possible for a heavily classically trained pianist to explore music instead of just the piano - suddenly none of my practice feels like it's done in vain anymore...

I never had an interest in classical music until I watched you play. Because your hand movements are mesmerizing to me. And then I started listening to the incredible sounds that came out of them....

I think that the things that make Nahre Sol popular on RUclips, besides the obvious ones like being a brilliant composer and pianist, are the ability to speak well, understand and analyze music, and express her own thoughts and analyses to the camera clearly and honestly. Also the editing and production of her videos is quite good.

I’ m totally loving your channel and have a suggestion for a genre of music you may not have checked out. I discovered the traditional music of Quebec and was pretty obsessed with it for awhile. The reason it is so cool is that a lot of the songs performed are ancient, but many of the bands reharmonize and reform the music so that is music that is constantly evolving. The groups I recommend listening to are Le Vent du Nord, Genticorum, La Volee D’Castors. They use interesting modes and changing time signatures (they call those “crooked”)

that's actually my main reason why i find her videos so interesting! it's so refreshing to see a classically trained pianist like myself to be able to appreciate and write music that is outside of the classical music world.

Ok, you said it - “insular” yes, exactly why you’re so interesting, among many other things!
This is by far my favorite video on your channel because it explains a lot about you so I can stop asking stupid stalky questions! (Sorry!)
But I really can tell before you told it, that indeed you love music more than piano, and that you like listening/writing more than playing. I’m quite similar in that way too- though I stopped classical piano after Juilliard pre-c, I felt in some ways my truer musicianship journey “began” as I dabbled in many other aspects like arranging and directing. I’m sure you can relate. End state is an exciting to think about, but we all are benefiting immensely from your love of music. End of rant, thanks for this video and keep it up!

p.s. because you give freely of yourself what most truly talent people keep locked away, and you do it to educate and further the understandings of others, it is an attractive attribute.
What's great is that many artists aim at the same thing, Nahre wants to help people be enthusiastic about music, Quentin Tarantino just wants to make films that make others want to make films. It seems so simple but these creators are the foundation of our future. Teaching by doing.

Nahre, you're correct when you say some classical musicians can be insular. I am one of those people. I can acknowledge that other styles and genres exist, but they don't speak to me the same way my chosen genre does.
Nahre's amazing, but I also wanted to mention that the artistry of the editing on this video is quite awesome as well. (Somewhat less convinced by the camera work though...)
