I've seen Magnus do this in a documentary where they had a masked man play him with a secret chess engine. He played several moves and then when he was convinced it was a person with an engine he walked off and didn't speak.

I'm so looking forward to hearing your take on Hans' interview after his game vs Lenier Dominguez! That's a pretty heavy one!
Oh jeez, what did he say now?
Really great summary without unnecessarily inflaming the situation at all. You would make a great journalist with that kind of ability. Impressive.
Watching Hikaru go from "that's all I'll say, my lips are sealed" to spearheading the accusations against Hans after realizing he was getting more viewers was pretty funny
I doubt that was the reason, I don't think he was being malicious, just irresponsible and dumb as he was having some fun with the drama and he really was leaning into trusting magnus' implications.
Funny or sad is the question…
That entire journey was about 30 seconds
It's not funny bro
Hikaru is the very definition of loose lips, he's got into way stupider beefs than this one. At least in this case he's beefing with a known cheater.
I remember when Kasparov thought that the Deep Blue team was cheating (in the 1997 match) because the machine seemed to be playing in a positional style. And then IBM wouldn't release any kind of machine logs so he became even more suspicious. It really threw his game off.
Kasparov thought that he played with machine, but it was kentaur...
It turns out that the Deep Blue team actually was cheating, in a sense. . By specifically programming the computer to play against Kasparov's style. They loaded all of Kaspys game into the computer.
@@reacher74 Deep Blue was calculating by brute force, using the Alpha-Beta prunning algorithm, which basically creates a 'tree' consisting all possible combinations of moves for X moves, and then instead of evaluating each and every outcome, it discards some of the variations if they are heavily unfavorable. In order to specifically program it to play with a certain style, you have to create a more 'intelligent' system, like a reinforced or supervised system that analyzes and learns from its mistakes. For deepblue, there was no 'style' but only evaluations for certain positions. And yes, those evaluations were calculated according to some other parameters which are derived from high level GM games, but that does not mean it specifically designed to match Kasparov's style.
They definitely didn't play on a level playing field. That much is sure.
@@burakmete5759 yes its called a minimax tree, the "cheating" term in general comes from the fact that specifically kasparov's games were fed to the machine and hence it adjusted its weights specifically against him, dubious claim still

If your not a Lawyer, Solicitor, Barrister or Legal person you should be ! Well done !
If someone that Magnus discusses chess with gave his game plan to Hans, then Hans could run that through an engine and memorize the perfect moves to play. For someone at Hans rating, this would give them a very real chance to beat Magnus.

Hans just outplayed him in the opening by transposing back to a line he knew, magnus couldn’t even start playing, felt pressured and collapsed. @@robertfrippers In fact... everything about this is 100% speculation. Magnus never said he cheated lol... we are all just assuming based on a cryptic tweet.
Love the honesty and trying to be objective as possible when recapping the details to your viewers
If Magnus thinks he has a mole-it would entirely explain his withdrawing. He doesn’t want to give away rating while he has a spy in his camp and wants time to clean house…
But that doesn’t explain the increased security measures… with the wanding and 15 min delay…
It wouldn't explain anything, it makes ZERO sense for someone to leak an opening to Hans with black... If they wanted Magnus to lose points they would have leaked it to another top player with white.
Also there was nothing about the security here we haven't seen elsewhere, you act like it was a dramatic increase, it wasn't.
I think the mole idea does not make sense. IF someone did approach Hans from Magnus camp and offered this information, how would he know to trust them?
If he accepted, it as real and used that as his study and it turned out to be fake it would seriously hurt his chances even more. Also I think if someone from Magnus camp was seen with him that itself would be risky and there would have to be a lot of cloak and dagger stuff. The possibility that he got lucky and happened to do some good prep seems a lot more likely than any of this other stuff.

Thank you, Eric, for your efforts to add a calm and rational perspective into this drama.
One point I cannot agree with you is on accents. It is not uncommon for people's accents to shift towards the environment they are currently in. One example of that is Gillian Anderson, from The X-Files. She spent the first half of her childhood in America and the second half in Britain. She says that now her accent will switch - without her realising it - when she travels between America and Britain.
IMO, living for half of your childhood in a singular place, going to school there etc, is very different than traveling at 18/19.
@@hungrycrab3297 He has not lived his whole life in the US, at least not according to the all-knowing Wikipedia. According to that, he lived in the Netherlands from age 7 to 10
Regarding the accent, people who lie often speak differently than how he normally used to, such as higher pitches or in this particular drama, his accent. Though I'm not accusing him of cheating, I'm just saying in term of his accent
Some people just do that, I had a friend and we both went to South Carolina for some work and when we came back after only about 6 months he had a full on southern drawl and picked up a lot of the speech mannerisms but I did not at all. I do not understand it but some people just adapt to how other people speak if they are in an area for a while. It is really a red herring and if anything just shows that this is not really about the realistic possibility that he cheated, it is much more about how a lot of people do not like him and loved to troll him.
Chess speaks for itself, that kind of thing, this is really what this is about.
Then don’t he literally said don’t take this at face value but I’m putting it here because it’s abnormal

Magnus didn’t speak directly about it because accusing Hans of cheating without hard evidence would put him into potential legal issues
@@TheJoamirhawezi Libel laws are pretty lax in the US. As a public figure (in a way) Hans needs to prove that the libelous claim was made with malice not just that it's libelous. So Magnus could argue that he genuinely believed the claim that Hans cheated with the information he was provided and no malice was intended.
Magnus behaving like a spoiled lady, if he wanted to withdraw he could do that without posting that video on twitter but he has no balls to argue why he left the tournament, i tought his bad mannerism ended a while ago but i guess i was wrong.

Thanks for enlightening us about this chess drama
In situations like this one there are two possible assumtions at the foundation of the problem, he is cheating, or not, some people should test the implications of both assumtions like you would do in a legal matter, simple as that, he has every right to defend himself and others have every right to try and find out wether he cheated and how, its the only way this might get to some sort of conclusion.
when the truth is unknown, we live in a bifurcated reality where our play moving forward must work on both boards at once simultaneously, or at the very least, serve the function of sussing out which board it is we're truly playing on.
I enjoyed your analysis Eric. We must make room for the possibility that Magnus just through Hans was cheating so that it affected Magnus’ play severely. But what’s maddening is Hans’ inability to correctly analyze positions and his poor explanation of Magnus’ play immediately after the Magnus game.
The other peculiar thing about Hans is his interview in which he acknowledged for his prior online cheating and expressed regret over how much it has set him back--essentially an apology to himself and only to himself. People who are only capable of seeing themselves as the victim typically will justify anything, making it imprudent to ever trust them so long as their lips are moving. Hans is suffering from this reputation.

Why did ye ban Hans ? Not a mention? Like you mentioned on stream
I think it’s hilarious Magnus just chucks a grenade into the chess world, walks away, then doesn’t say anything. But Hans does give me strong Lance Armstrong vibes. And the parallels with the paranoia around cheating between the cycling world and chess are uncanny. The players know their opponents. They compete against them and they know or get a feel for when someone is outperforming. And it does seem unlikely Hans could take a win OTB with black against Magnus. But that’s not evidence. It’s very sad if he’s just playing well. But his reaction? Again. Lance vibes.
Omfg uncanny parallels between two sports? Actually that's not uncanny, that's normal. Every sport has people watching for cheaters.
@@walterbrownstone8017 well thank you for correcting me. Very kind.
Magnus played below standards, Hans played a good end game. Other than Hans being awkward in interviews, there's zero indication he actually cheated. Unless Magnus have something more than his feelings, he greatly overstepped with the implication. I think Magnus genuinely believed something fishy was going on in combination with Hans's online ban for cheating was a badly hidden secret that maybe he hoped to expose with his tweet. I suspect Magnus though people analyzing the match against Hans would prove his suspicions, which hasn't been the case. Even Hikaru didn't "see" anything wrong until he watched the post match interview and suddenly allegations flew all over the place. All which could just be explained by Hans being bad in interviews (which can be proved by most older interviews).
Why is it unlikely though? Hans is just 19, he is still growing while magnus is on the decline
Parallel to Armstrong's vehement denials is for sure there. The fake accent also reminded me of Elizabeth Holmes (Theranos). It's a strange one for sure.

When Eric says Magnus's endgame was below his usual standard, it makes you wonder about Carlsen's train of thought. If you think you're playing a human, you play with your instinct. If you suspect you're playing an engine, you doubt yourself. I'm far too shit at chess to weigh in with an opinion, but I'm enjoying all the speculation!
this is a fair point. Magnus might have been suspicious by now
It's the only thing that makes sense. Based on Hans's previous online cheating, Magnus built up a suspicion of him cheating that were confirmed the the perceived counter of his opening, leading him to focus more on Hans than his own endgame. @@ballskinNice one. Thanks!
I haven’t been a viewer of your stream/channel. But I’m extremely impressed at your ability to bring such objectivity to your analysis (even while you acknowledge that you might have biases). Great job!
I really appreciate this extremely unbiased, objective take. Your thoughts are very well said and reasonable. Thanks for your solid coverage of current news.
"You didn't even share a game!"is what I'm thinking.
Apparently he said the opening was played before but it wasn’t
There is something suspicious. Erik praises Hikaru for his intuition. Hikaru says Erik has flashes of genius. Eryk didn't make a single move on the board. Did Eryk, passing on rumors from the SCC, call Yaser his friend, but could not call him father? Very suspicious.🤔🤫😉😎
what in the fuck did i just read
@@jahhone5892 I'm as mindboggled as you
"No Accent" . . . ?
"No Engine On" . . .?
Well, of course "Circumcision speaks for itself"
And of course how could I possibly ever hold on to a draw with a gentile . . .
Aged like milk left out in the sun
Thank you Eric ❤️
Electronic wands don't do anything if prep gets leaked...
If I was to play a guy who I suspected of cheating, I would try to pick some unusual opening. But with my luck, the guy would pick just that opening to prepare for 20 moves out.
Hans made an off handed comment in one of his interviews “maybe he just doesn’t want me to win the tournament.” Basically by quitting when he did Hans loses a point and Ian (who lost to Magnus earlier) benefits as all Magnus’s games are annulled.
Why would Magnus's withdrawal result in Hans losing a point? That makes no sense
@@tolkienfan1972 Hans won a point by winning against Magnus. Because Magnus withdrew, Hans loses a point (because Magnus didn't play at least half of the tournament, all of his previous games are not "scored"). So Ian, who lost against magnus, isn't now "down a point" and Hans, who won against magnus, isn't now "up a point".
The interview was what made me convinced he cheated, at the end when asked about magnus’ withdrawal, it’s not that he doesn’t know what to say, it’s like he knows the truth but he knows he can’t say it. Very cringe to watch and made Hans look very disingenuous
@@tolkienfan1972 Because Hans win against Magnus no longer counts.
Rules are basically "If a player withdraws early in the tournament, then no matches they played are counted."
edit: Im assuming the reasoning for the rule is to not give everyone except one or two unlucky players free points.
@@tolkienfan1972 it makes a lot of sense
"So that wasn't the only thing Hikaru ended up saying." LOL
They could be taken to a big empty room to play. It'll look epic anyway since it's big empty rooms and chess go well together.
I’m such a chess dummy that I wish Eric would elaborate about how the post-game interview analysis from Hans was “incoherent” at times. I’d like to watch a breakdown of that.
Even just his lines trail off into nothing, you can see the interviewer is confused trying to show what Hans is saying. His slurred and quick speech implies he wants to avoid the whole analysis like he has no idea what he's doing in the game
You know every sideline because you look 10 moves deep before you move anything.
Memorizing lines and board positions Is automatic. On a casual game if I go use the washroom and there is no clock I know if my opponent moved because I know where every piece was.
If hans cannot do this then he is not playing he is simply entering moves he is getting from somewhere, and is thus guaranteed to be cheating.
Even if I play something odd there is a reason and I know what it is. Simple as that.
Aman did yesterday, Hans talked about a line that just hangs a piece lol
@@deltalima6703 No dude, Im sure Hans knows exactly why he makes his moves, but he is fkin tired after the match to remember loads of lines and reasons for this and that. It's not easy to start discussing lines after a long match against a big player (Alejandro) who has been checking your game with the engine for hours and then goes to show you in the blackboard that u are wrong...
@@user-kg9mt1yh6k Yet none of the other players have issues doing it? 🤔
The real question: Is Hans in possession of lip gloss?
I appreciate you sharing your point of view. Thank you!
total respect for eric! speaking your mind regardless is a courageous thing to do 👍🏻👏👏
The fact people knew he had cheated in the past biased any analysis done of his games… including how Magnus interpreted the loss. If a specific outcome is very unlikely (such as a junior/much lower rated player beating the world champion over the board with black) any bias we have will be enhanced to overcome the incongruous results.
But people pretending that a teenager cheating at online chess is the same as smuggling a microcomputer into an OTB tournament or doping in other sports is mental.
@@gamesafoot I don't think a single person on this planet has theorized that, that's the way Niemann cheated.
hold on though, its perfectly fair to use chess engines for preparation before a game right? you just cant use an engine in real time while you are playing right? so how does any prior cheating in the past, affect your guilt in this particular situation?
Depends on if its YOUR preparation or Magnus' team leaking the info maliciously or accidentally and you using it. His past instances of not playing fair of course leads to more suspicion especially after those weird interviews where he was misevaluating variations that commentators kept spotting immediately. I know a lot of people are new to the community and just hopped off the umbilical cord so they are unaware other ways players can cheat other than looking at an engine and inputting these moves into it in real time and putting those moves on a board. Should he be punished? No, at least until there is hard core proof. But it would be moronic to turn a blind eye and dismiss past instances of the same behavior. So suspicion is warranted
@@hungrycrab3297 @HungryCrab there are new team members. Hans was checked thoroughly just like everyone else, cameras were on him with thousands of people watching him. What seems more likely? Note, I said "maliciously or accidentally"
