I’d love to see another shot at a 3D DK game. I don’t necessarily need or want the Kong family back, but if it’s structured better than 64 I wouldn’t be opposed. K. Rool should make a come back, seeing the fanfare with his smash appearance and all makes me believe he has a solid chance of coming back.
Off topic; Kirby and the Forgotten Land has me on a 3D crave rn, like I would’ve been fine with a 3D Kirby game but this is like an AMBITIOUS 3D KIRBY game, I hope maybe you enjoy it, lord knows I will.

  • @stanstanstan2597

If there were a new DK game, I would want them to simply expand upon what they already have. Those rumors that were going around a little while back said they were gonna basically reboot the series back to basics, which isn’t something I would want to see. At this point, DK is kinda built around nostalgia, because it’s such an old series and has had some long hiatuses. Returns exemplifies this. Hell, the K-Temple stages are literally old ruins of a civilization with DK arcade glyphs on the walls. DK III running through the metaphorical and literal ruins of his forefathers’ popularity. The point is, we’ve been all about the past meeting the future, about forward progress mixed with a respect and admiration for the past. I want more of this. I want the next time we see the inside of DK’s hut to feature the Banana Mirror and Frederick’s horn hanging on the walls. I want the DK arcade game thing back. I want to see the old Kongs come back instead of fading into obscurity forever. I don’t want them to just reset back to basics with DK, Diddy, and Cranky. Retro did a great job with this, I think the best thing they could do would be to continue to build off of it. Also it would be cool if the next game was a 3D platformer again. Just cuz DK64 was flawed didn’t mean they had to throw the entire idea into the shadow realm.

I mean, people who guess the same thing year after year are bound to be right eventually.
All jokes aside, what I'm hoping for is a return to the 3D space ala Donkey Kong 64 minus the jank that game included. I'd be okay with a third Returns style game to cap off a trilogy, but I think it's too little too late at this point and wouldn't generate much hype in the mainstream. Plus, we've started to see Nintendo finally listening over the past few years and actually innovating with franchises that have needed something new for far too long now. Mario Odyssey made levels open and expansive again after the linearity the Galaxy games and 3D Land/World introduced, Kirby's finally getting a proper 3D outing, Pokémon Legends: Arceus gave the typical formula a new coat of paint, Metroid got a beloved 2D game again, Splatoon 3... yeah, I'm not gonna defend that one, but you get my point. Nintendo is changing for the better (and worse in many ways), and I think they definitely want to bring back Donkey Kong in a big way. It'd be foolish of them to release another standard 2D game and expect the same responses they got in the past. Plus, 3D platformers in general are coming back in a big way. I already mentioned Mario and Kirby, but then we got games like A Hat in Time, Yooka-Laylee, Sackboy, Astro's Playroom, the Spyro remakes, the Kao the Kangaroo reboot, and tons of indie games. Some of those games are definitely better than others, but it's clear that gaming trends are finally moving away from "as realistic as possible" and "simplistic and quick" as the only cornerstones of design.

Personally, I believe that Nintendo is _more_ than capable of generating decently large levels of hype for another DKC game if they approach it in a similar manner to how they handled Metroid: Dread. Dread has shown to me that, by using such a strong marketing strategy, Nintendo can _definitely_ push an otherwise niche series to be quite successful even if it's 2D/2.5D. Because of Dread's success thanks to said marketing, I have no doubt that they could achieve something similar with a new DKC game - or just a new 2D/2.5D DK game in general - so long as they play their cards right. That said, however, I _do_ think that a new 3D DK game would be really awesome if done well. Perhaps they could release a 3D DK game first in order to garner more mainstream/casual appeal for the series and character as a whole, and _then_ release a new DKC game afterwards for those interested regardless if they're longtime fans of the series or newcomers brought in by the aforementioned hypothetical 3D game. It's not like Tropical Freeze sold poorly in of itself either, as even on the Wii U despite the console's low install base it sold over 2 million units, and it sold more than that on the Switch in a singular year after being ported to said console. Keep in mind that we evidently - at least from what I can tell, anyways - do not have any sales updates on the latter version/port beyond 2019, so it has likely sold a decent bit more than that since then as well. (I estimate that it has sold about 3-4 million units on the Switch overall by now, personally) With this in mind, while it's certainly sold less than some of Nintendo's other games, it still sold pretty damn well in of itself relatively speaking. If they market a new game well enough, I wouldn't be surprised if they could surpass these numbers, or at least reach proportionally higher sales in a shorter time frame.

The 2 ideas for a DK game I'd like to see the most are probably-
-A 3D platformer that takes what worked from DK64, but also Odyssey and improves upon ideas in both. Big levels, lots of fun stuff to do, multiple characters, etc. I did a 100% playthrough of DK64 last month for the first time and to be honest, the amount of stuff to do wasn't a problem, especially after coming to the minimum requirement of 100 golden bananas fairly early into my complete playthrough. The 3 things that I would argue that need to be improved in a hypothetical sequel would be better minigames(quite a few were repeated too much or just plain awful), better warping (instead of 5 sets of pads the checkpoint/warp system from Odyssey would work wonders), and switching characters was sometimes annoying (literally just turn the character barrel into a rocket barrel like in DKCR that can be summoned with the push of a button to swap characters where and whenever). Theres a lot of room for DK to thrive and I think its the obvious choice.
-My other pipe dream is a 3D beat em up that plays like DMC, but with DK characters. Platforming would be less of a focus in this but combat with a heavy hitting character like DK seems like it could be amazing and be a unique new twist for the series. Although this seems like a better idea for a spin off.
Either way Id like to see quite a few playable characters, especially Lanky, Dixie and Funky. NPCs like Swanky Kong should come back to, and I'd love to see new Kongs for NPCs and maybe even playable characters. We havent had new Kongs since Jungle Beat and they never returned anyways. Also I think K Rool with the kremlings as the main villains is a given, but Id also like other enemies like necky and zinger to come back. Hell, even the tikis and snowmads if they keep them in as minor baddies/easter eggs.
Also I think its fair to consider at this point in time that maybe if there really is a new DK in development, that maybe its just in development hell. Prime 4 showed that Nintendo doesnt always pick the right team for games at first, though I would obviously expect that Nintendo in-house could make a much better game than whoever started making Prime 4 before Retro took over. It may be a pessimistic outlook, but at this rate I dont think its safe to rule out. Hell, we might have to wait until the next system. Either way hope to be wrong, I guess if nothing else well at least get Rogen Kong and Armisen Kong in the Mario Movie in December.

there's a gap in model-reference IDs in the internal coding of SWSH. interestingly despite being last in the pokedex, Regieleki+Drago has a higher model ID than Calyrex. and there's a gap between Calyrex and Zarude. either implying that Zarude either evolves or was a common pokemon that was going to be the "face" of the expansion pass like Kubfu/Urshifu was, or for reasons unknown, Zarude was repurposed into a movie pokemon. (again, model ID higher than Calyrex, but was obtainable after Isle of Armor was released)
ID numbers: Calyrex is 986, Zarude is 988. and Eleki/Drago is 989/990. Gamefreak probably plans for at least 1 new legend, i question if gamefreak is going to stick to November, or is forced to make new pokemon games a January thing due to COVID pushing the Zarude movie from July to winter in Japan. now they have to figure out cross promotion.

It really pains me how little investment the DK series gets from Nintendo. After a decade of mismanagement with the series, it was such a great feeling to see DKCR be announced. Finally, DKC had RETURNED. This was going to be the big revival for the series. Nintendo had finally figured out how to recapture the magic, and there was no way DK was going to fall by the wayside again. A few years later, we got Tropical Freeze, which was a masterpiece, and it further cemented the belief that the series had hit a new stride and was here to stay.
And then...nothing. Another near-decade of nothing. And unlike last time, there haven't even been any spinoffs like King of Swing or Barrel Blast showing even a minor amount of investment in the series. We're basically back at square one again. It feels bad, man. I'm sure the next DK game, whenever it happens, will be great, but I wish we didn't have to sacrifice so much quantity for that quality.

If a 3d donkey kong is fated as the next game in the series, I want it to take cues from mario odyssey on its pacing. DK64 feels sluggish to play nowadays because movement is really slow and heavy, only to get really slippery when the fast moving set pieces kick in. Odyssey not only feels quick and snappy, but it fully embraced using movement options to break the levels and go wherever you want. In short, I want to be a big ape literally barreling through the trees as fast as possible.

I'll take remake of DK64 at this point. It's really the only game in the franchise that needs it. However, my dream DK game would be something like a linear 3D platformer with beat'em up mechanics. I wanna go ape & give out megaton punches & maybe even shoot my coconut gun! I think the only games can I draw comparisons to is the 6th generation era platformers like Jak, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, & Wario World. Maybe even Crash of the Titans, but game was more beat'em up, than platformer. Maybe the DS version would be a better comparison?

3D Game of DK. Hands down. I want a big story of the franchise. If it was up to me I already have ideas of how it should go and what gameplays it should have. Cheese and rice I'm tired of waiting. Might as well make my own video game with Apes and Monkeys. About how that should go.... Guess I'll do a lot of thinking and drawing.

It'd be cool to get a DK game with Banjo and Kazooie in it. They would team up with the extended DK crew and take down K. Rool. Also I want Tiki Tong and Lord Frederick and even Wizpig as bosses that lead up to K. Rool. It must be 3D. There has to be a New Donk city level. You should be able to switch between Kongs on the fly. There must be a new updated DK rap with B-K and the other Kongs! Rare Ware refrences a plenty. Also more animal buddies. My imagination runs wild! But even if that doesn't happen, I hope it's still very good!

  • @emptyset1312

I recently replayed Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and boy there are some really cool ideas in there. The combo system is neat and provides a nice sense of flow and it's fun to replay levels and master how they work to get more medals. The only problem is it's complete ass to control. And it's on the short side. I think there's a wealth of untapped potential there.
So my hot take for what I want from the next DK game is a spiritual successor to Jungle Beat. But make it control like a normal game, instead of a game where you hit bongos and clap and just sort of pray DK does what you want. Oh and bring back some more Kongs and the Kremlings instead of doing that weird thing Jungle Beat did where it only had completely original characters.

Could be anything at this point, I would like to see like a dk ultimate maybe have 2D and 3D game play elements or either the former or ladder by themselves would be a treat. D.K games are historically awesome, can’t wait to see what’s goin on in the jungle next!
    Great video too Al!!!

Donkey Kong is in the same limbo as Mariokart rn. There is technically already a new game on the Switch (since it’s a modified port), but not a NEW new one and we don’t know if Nintendo cares enough to give all seven Wii U owners worldwide enough love to give us more.
