When reaching customs at your port of entry, just be calm and answer questions confidently in accordance to your visa rules and guidelines. This is my last year as an undergrad and I intend to apply to graduate school for Fall 2022. When I came in at Houston, the customs officer asked me since this is my last year, what do I intend to do after. This can be a trick question to see if the student will respond by saying they intend to stay in the US and find work and they can deny you reentry. I simply said that I either intend to go back to my home country to take a gap year or I will apply for a graduate program to get higher education before going back to my home country. That sounds like exactly what he wanted to hear as he smiled and told me good luck. Just be wise when answering certain questions like that!
@@SojourningScholar No problem! Even if an international student intends to apply for OPT/CPT work/internship after graduation, which they have the right to do, telling customs what they want to hear is key in the moment because gaining entry is the most important thing at the point of entry! You’re clear to do whatever after you get through that!
When you arrive at the port of entry, do you need to show proof of where you will be staying? Is it a requirement to have a lease agreement for off-campus living or to have confirmation from the university that you will be residing on campus?

Was suppose to resume September 03, Had my visa interview on the 13th of September, got approved and I picked up my visa on the 16th. My ISSO gave me a deadline of 16th to resume otherwise I would be deferred to spring. I already got my flight ticket for 24th. If I am asked by the customs on the date difference, what should I say. Is it possible for them to allow me in even if I intend to resume at Spring ?
Just explain the circumstances. In the worst case, you might be sent to secondary screening, where you might need to contact your DSO. So I'll recommend you come prepared. Best of luck!
