Manish mention of Dorothy Paget reminds me of a day in Bath fairly recently.
I was wandering around whilst my car was being serviced.
I was admiring an Italy racing blue Bugatti Type 35 casually parked in Milsom Street.
I was aware of a Lady of Age next to me also admiring this beauty.
The more we chatted I realised she was quite a lady. And so knowledgable re cars & motor racing.
She often went to Le Mans and her and her brother would sleep on the running boards of Daddies Lagonda.
She knew The Bentley Boys especially "Birkin and Barnato"!
She still goes occasionally to (Historique) Le Mans with her son.
I wanted to talk to her all day, in fact I wish I had suggested coffee.

The trouble is, I’m so in tune with these 5 boys and their thoughts, I fear I would be far too familiar if I was ever to meet them. I’ll apologise in advance.

    • @LCOF
      @LCOF 3 месяца назад +4

That's my concern too. The overbearing, unnerving, over familiarity would turn them right off me within a second of meeting them. I'll probably attempt to give Manish and Neil a big hug before poking fun at Edward and his daddy. Harris would kick me in the shins and Cooper would tell me to F off. 😞

For a while I had a girlfriend and where she lived in rural Cheshire there was a lot of "old money". The two cars you would see in so many farms and posh houses were Disco's and Volvo estates. Quite often they'd be old ones as well. I can't think of any other cars that have that ability to be respected by everyone.
Why does the tailgate on the latest Disco always remind me of Laura Kuenssberg?????

Nice to see some appreciation for the old D4.. personally I love mine. I’ve enjoyed some nice and fast motors in my younger years, but the Disco is my favourite car I have owned. And the reliability everyone harps on about isn’t always true, take my 2011 sdv6 for example, it’s just turned 402000km and apart from the usual wear and tear items, it’s still going like a dream, it’s epic off road and it’s still wearing its original air struts from factory!

Lovely to see some Disco 4 love. We’ve owned two in 10 years (pre and post facelift) in Mozambique. The English embassy in Maputo is also very fond of the Disco 4, often modifying them with bulletproof windows, run flat tires, a massive antenna for the sat phone. They’re unbelievably cool.

At the risk of going off topic, we absolutely LOVE our 2014 Disco4. Four grown up kids and my drum kit and crap can co-exist in it any day of the week, it gets over 950 kms per standard tank week in, week out, and it goes across rivers and up any mountain trail where we live here in Australia without any trouble whatsoever, all in wonderful quiet comfort. She’s a keeper, I hope, unless LandRover get around to replacing the new defender’s absolutely useless rear door with a proper split tailgate and more spacious rear load space.
Best designed wagon (estate) on the planet.

This podcast has become a safe haven for me to nerd out.
Two car garage: You find yourself in a Mad Max scenario. The fuel is gone and the grid is down. You have two cars in your garage which you conveniently topped off, because, let’s face it, you’re a genius.
The first car you use to scout and plan. It should be quick and agile.
The second car must accommodate your families and survival gear. It should be versatile and rugged, and have enough range to get you far from danger.
As you’re a ‘reasonable’ man who can’t simply fly his family to safety, you have £100,000 for both.

    Two car garage:
    Real life,
Lots, and I mean lots of hard work and a bit of luck paid of and now a 10 y/o boy inside me is the happiest boy in the world becuase he will be able to assamble a dream two car garage (he never wanted anything more).
He first fell in love with a car when he saw a sexy, bright red Maserati Granturismo that roared past him. My god that noise.... That day it was all over for him and his future wallet.
The boy grew up as a real peteolhead, loving analog cars, manuals, naturally aspirated engines, hydraulic steering, etc. He always imagined actually driving the hell out of cars, rwd and awd. He knows a lot about the industry and the history of the brands. He learned to respect it and love it.
Now that boy is a 30 y/o who has a budget of around 1 mil. I love to ski, it is an essential. I grew up whatching crazy Jon Olsson putting a Thule on Lamborginis and going skiing while doing donouts on snow and ice. Well, I intend to be a bit more civilised becuase I can have two cars in which I can do donouts, one to put a Thule on and go skiing, to often go travel with friends/familly, a practical car but it has to be something with petrolhead blood in it, something really cool and most importantly something that is a dream to drive. I have to mention, I have a thing for estates, I really am not into this whole SUV thing. I mean all the roads in the Alps are nicely mantained to be honest, theres no need for a stupid SUV.
The second car sould be a dream poster sports or super car, no hyper car. Manual, as analog as it gets yet modern if there's such a thing. I dont have a problem with older cars either, contrary. Engine that makes the sky shake! A car that does not exceed 500/600hp. I could not care less for top speed, I care for driving pleasure. Something under the radar perhaps. A sunday car.
If possible it would be good to have some money saved in order to invest in a garage itself, why not.
    Go on!
English is not my native language, sorry for the possible mistakes.
Thanks for possible suggestions and cheers!

    Hi chaps.
    My two car garage garage!
When you were born, your father had a Porsche 944 turbo, (because he could not afford a 911)in which he would take you to kart racing, rowing etc.
After passing away in 2020, he has left you £75,000 in his will to purchase two cars. One of which will be an Italian car (pre-1985) and the other a naturally aspirated Porsche , to cruise down to the cote de Azure.
(One has to be a convertible)

Fantastic as always gents. My Friday wind down with laughter and nerdiness aplenty, just how it should be. I’ve clearly missed this for your (cough) recording of the next one but can you keep to this longer duration please. Simply magic.
    Oh and two car garage:
You’re in your forties, kids (x2) are getting that bit older (primary going into secondary) and you’re more comfortable with the pennies. You need a new car for the family but you also release some space in the garage for a car to take on driving holidays, Sunday blasts and perhaps the odd track day. The catch is, you only have £35k to spend in TOTAL and your wife needs you to be able to tow her horse trailer on occasion.

    2 Car Garage suggestion:
For the last few years you've owned an E39 530 which you love as it does so many things so well, but being a lifelong car nerd, and aware of the vast sea of untapped motoring potential out there, you want to experience more from the automotive buffet of life.
However, not having any savings, your two cars must be bought from whatever earnings you can get from selling the E39 - an optimistic browse of the classifieds suggests that a 10k budget might be possible on the 75k motor.
Of the two cars, one needs to be practical enough for family use, your two young boys and their associated ephemera, but it should still be able to tick the same boxes of quality, class and driving enjoyment as the Beemer.
You have carte blanche on the second car, to pick anything fun, quirky, fast or impractical.

Totally agree Chris, if you like operating machinery, that’s what you have to do. I’ve always lived cars and driving, but somehow ended up flying aeroplanes… I think it’s all related, that buzz you get when you nail a corner properly is the same in either machine.
To be honest some of the best fun is in light aircraft, as you get into airliners it all becomes a bit too regulated, but there are still fun bits out there. I remember taking an Emirates 777 into Nice in 2016 on a sporty hand-flown approach, which involved banking quite steeply close to the rocks and sea, rolling wings level at about 300’ with a beach full of totty under the right wing and nailing the landing seconds later. That is the level of fun you’re limited to in big jets, but the principles are the same, it’s about doing it better than the next guy, getting a smooth flow between turns and ultimately not cocking it up 😂
I remember it for that approach, and that it was the night of the terror attack there which will forever be with me, so amazing I remember the fun of the approach at all… that’s the power of that buzz, even when tempered so much by an industry horrified by risk.

As a result of listening to Manish speak so eloquently each week and occasionally swearing which sounds so good when coming from him, I revisited his film Senna this weekend. A film I had not watched since it first came out, there's something about getting older (48) that make such stories more poignant, the man died when he was 34 Ffs! Great film thank you Manish!

You find yourself in your early 30's living in suburban London, therefore the idea of a driveway (let alone a garage) is out of the question, street parking it is. As a motor enthusiast you need something fun that you can take outside of the M25 for the Sunday blast or up to Bicester Heritage for certain automotive related events ...BUT must not flash enough to risk being nicked. You have a £20,000 budget.

If it already exists, I'd love to know about it. Could you put out a list of the books you've mentioned in previous episodes? I recently read Mr. Harris' book and I'm ravenous for any and all books that this group can recommend. Thank you for the wonderful podcast. I look forward to it every week.

    Is a brand-new tire sexier than a well-used one?
Thinking of a shiny just delivered R compound vs soft fresh of a stint in WEC. With some contact marks on it for sprinkles.

I appreciated the D4/LR4 convo. As my daily, I drive a 2010 with 240,000kms (5.0L - "40, 45, 4.4, 5, 40, 45 LOL the surgeons) and I absolutely love it. I never want to replace it. If the engine blows, I'll have it rebuilt. I could get a new LR, but they simply don't do it for me. They're very "nice", but nope, not even close to the usability, user friendliness, looks, or character of the old car.

    It’s Friday !
Knowing the countdown for the upload / premiere starts on Monday for myself is pure excitement each new week. Currently driving along in my “ high mileage “ 215K that is a e46 330d M Sport touring ( Clear glass & automatic) whilst drinking a flat white of Edwards personal preference. I can assure you there is not one single cup holder in sight as I know Neil has previously mentioned that he “ F-cking hates the things “
Long may these uploads continue & cheers to all the addicts you’re all wonderful ! I can also confirm the new Harris book is a fabulous read.

On the 5 people judging by the rest of his guests I was sure Edward's final guest was going to be Eddie Irvine. I listened to another podcast and they asked Guy Martin the same question his answer was slightly different. His dog, Hitler, Putin, Mike Tyson and Gengis Khan

Here in the States, all LR3's (Disco 3) can have the 4.4 V8 and is considered considerably more reliable than any engine from the LR4 (Disco 4), including that 5.0 V8. LR3 > LR4 for us.

Always remember seeing the (black and white) footage of the fateful last run of Bluebird 2 - seem to remember it was somewhere around 328-330 mph when it crashed….

Listening from Kenya. Would love a Discovery 4 but we are Landcruiser country. King Charles visited last year and his Royal wheels was a Disco 4.
With regards to being a passenger, is that the passenger seat never seems quite right. Especially when you dont have the same seat adjustment control..
P.s. Will Neil now plan a road trip for Collecting cars and if so which cars will you all show up with on the road trip?

I had a Discovery 3 HSE from new and kept it until the new Discovery 5 came out. I agree that the Discovery 3 was a really great car. However, I disagree completely about the Discovery 5. I have a Discovery 5 Si which has the 3.0L V6 supercharged engine from the Jaguar F-type in it - it is much better in every way than my Discovery 3 was, a really great car. it is super comfortable, refined and massive inside. It has an amazing sound system and very competent on and off road.

About the Discovery 4, would you rather have the 2.7 with a manual gearbox or the 3.0 auto?

  • @gordonsimpson3235

Discovery 4 was a great looking package - useful ...like a Labrador (to use Chris C's analogy). But like a Labrador (which has weak hips), Discovery 4 has a weak drive train....snapped cranks etc. making it a vehicle where you never know how you will finish your journey (AA/RAC transporter), so not for me.
Discovery 5 is a hideous bloated gargoyle.
Peak Land Rover was the original 3 door Range Rover IMO

There was never a manual V8 L319 Disco, only the previous gen Disco (which was basically a RRC). BMW engines never went into L319/L320, it was only L322 as thst essentially was a BMW by birth.
