- Two characters who are very similar in gameplay, but one has been consistently hated while the other one has been loved. Why?

Ironically, medic is the one with a personality, a fantastic personality, while mercy is just......the healer.
When you think about it the tf2 mercs are all stereotypes and overwatch filled with archetypes yet the tf2 cast who didnt need to be developed actually got good character development over the years without destroying those steroetypes while the overwatch cast faded away in popularity because they never evolved past those paper thin archetypes. Especially since the characters are suppose to be a main selling point for overwatch.
@@kophullloh516 It's a problem with a ton of series that introduce new characters way too quick.
Modern mortal kombat introduced new versions of previous characters in 9 but before fleshing them out had all of them killed and turned into goons. 10 tried to introduce new ones despite the fact we still really don't know anything about the characters their replacing or how they fit into the overall story.
For example Kabal in the new timeline is now a good guy ok interesting i wonder where they'll take th- and he's already dead. Then 11 says he was actually evil the whole time wow. Kung lao never has a canon interaction with kung jin and so on.
Overwatch tries to introduce you into a superhero universe with good vs evil plots but then introduces a character who doesn't fit the story in universe and aesthetically stands out in a bad way, yet since their new a ton of emphasis will be placed on them while old characters are still non characters or get retconned to fit into the newer mold.
And no revealing that the main thing about them is that their gay isn't the same as actual character development, blizzard.
@@kophullloh516 Which sucks too because Apex is a really fun game and doing well even once or winning is super super rewarding, you can feel the source engine blood pulsing through that game. If only the devs didn't fall the for modern FPS design pitfalls of ADDING MORE STUFF to distract from the fact that what you are presented with isn't all that interesting in terms of BR game design. Pathfinder, Octane, and Mirage are pretty interesting and cool characters though tbh.
@@superbrainz2357 As someone who unfortunately plays _League of Legends_ sometimes (albeit focused on the mobile version because I favor shorter games as a college student), that is also a problem I noticed. There's 165 champions, yet even with the rewriting of the lore, there are still champions that are just... kind of there.
It's a mixed bag: older champions have new lore that can either be an improvement or still as generic as the old ones (and unless the champion gets some sort of visual update, these changes aren't even reflected in-game), and out of those who got released after the reboot, for every interesting, fleshed-out champion, there's several generic ones.
To be fair to Riot Games, they do implement the lore more efficiently in the MTG-style spinoff of _League,_ but it's kind of sad that most of the focus of the main game goes to making skins for the more popular champions while ignoring those who are more interesting or those who need an update.

As a Medic Player, yes, we do very much choose who shall live (DPS classes) and who dies (mostly that one scout who keeps fucking dying)

@@randomdude4360 havent really seen much overwatch gameplay, so idk how that'd feel, all I know is that I only heal scouts, spies, and snipers when they have missing health (ubercharge oh yeahhhhh)

4 years later but i still wanna add, medic was also infinetly more advertised in tf2 than mercy in overwatch, he has a whole animation showing a bit more of his personality and how he plays while having him do some really cool and funny things, the best mercy got was that one 3 second animation of she descending while her wings are open

I totally agree that Medic has way more personality than Mercy. I don't play either game, but both are so popular that it's been impossible to avoid picking things up about them over time. So, what do I know about Medic? His personality, everything about what kind of person he is, can be found in a single video: "Meet the Medic." I'm not even considering anything fanmade for this, all of this was from one video. What is he doing? Joking with an awake patient whose entire chest cavity is open about _how he lost his medical license,_ shooing away a dove that he's lovingly named Archimedes after it lands in said open chest cavity (and caring more about Archimedes being dirty from that rather than his patient having a bird land in their insides), blowing up his patient's heart, having a living, talking head in his fridge, making his patient hold open their own ribcage, and on and on. When he enters the battlefield, he appears in beams of light accompanied by a choir, white doves fluttering out from behind him. Ah, a medic! A symbol of peace and healing! But it's completely ironic. A subversion of expectations. And that's why it's so funny! His segment ends with him again lit up by the sun, more white doves flying up from behind him, but he's standing on an entire mound of bodies that his experiment made happen. When he gets his "Meet the Team" closeup, he is smiling with maniacal glee, holding a bone saw. All of this is in a 4 minute video! 4 minutes, _jam-packed_ with character and entertainment. TF2 released in 2007, and there are still legions of fans of Medic to this day who like him so much they've produced endless amounts of fan content, ranging from artwork to videos to fics, and so much more. Hell, now, in 2023, there's been an entire-ass _movie_ made in SFM with him as a central character!
Now, what do I know about Mercy? What have I picked up about her character, who she is over the years I've been here and there exposed to her like I have been with Medic? Well, she's nice... A good doctor, is passionate about her job... She's attractive... Some of the first stuff I saw about her was the clip you used a few times, where she's descending from the heavens, reaching out her hand, almost a literal angel. And it isn't ironic, like with Medic. She is genuinely good and wants to help people...

And that's it. That's all I've learned about her. And most of the fan content about her that I've happened across is, uh, porn. Not much else.

I had a chance of playing Medic in TF2, and man, my team was like "PROTECT THE FUCKING DOCTOR AT ALL COST, DOES NOT LET HIM DIE"
And them is mercy, that is probably going like: "Why Mercy is dying? Thats bad"
I think it’s because the longer Medic is alive the more healing he can do. So you get to go on a rampage and be invincible. You protect Medic you get a power fantasy moment that can win the game. And the best part? If you protect medic you get to do the hurting 😊
Because a medic alive for 40 seconds is far more valuable than a 39.

Same doesn't happen for Mercy really.
Mercy is the kind of character to sing "two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree."

Mercy loves to help and heal people, and sees killing her enemies as unfortunate and a necessary evil in order to achieve peace.
Medic loves to hurt and kill people, and sees healing his allies as an unfortunate and necessary evil in order to achieve bloodshed.

That’s why I love Medic more. There’s something about the cruel irony of a guy who’s a ‘medic’, who’s a complete psychopath that loves bloodshed that I just love.
Imagine how much Overwatch would improve if it was splashed with a bottle of TF2's insanity?
Squeaky clean heroes can be boring, but insane mercs can be legends.
The best they have in that department is Junkrat, tbh.
Rule of thumb I saw from the good old Tum of Blur from someone’s dream.
If the character is created INTENDED to be sexy, they are not gonna be sexy. If they’re created for reasons other than being sexy, they can and may be sexy.

Medic: maybe if I heal this heavy I can use him as a human shield

It's an amazing feeling to find a heavy or soldier to use as a meat shield against someone. Hell, even scouts can be useful if you heal them.

So "Mercy" is fake, and Medic is... More *real,* even if he's certifiably crazy? Though, if Mercy is just _trying_ to be good while knowing about and refusing evil, that's a whole other ballgame. That’s really what it comes down to. Your character doesn’t have to be completely evil to be liked. He or she just has to have solid flaws.

One is beautiful, with a gorgeous body, and an impeccable personality. And the other is from Overwatch
I think a "dichotomous" character like Medic will always be more interesting than a straightforward one like Mercy. Even her name is so blatantly "I am good healing person." I feel like this is because we, as dichotomous human beings ourselves, find contradictory characters much more relatable. However, this isn't to say that ALL characters need to be gritty or psycho to be liked. I think it could've been as simple as, as you even suggested, making her past less than squeaky clean. Like perhaps she's so adamant on peace and doing no harm because she used to be violent, or she was exposed to great violence. Something like that to give her character more of a foundation for why she's so goody goody.
There is a reason as to why she's adamant in healing and that's because her parents, who were both doctors, were killed in a war. That would have been fine, but it leaves a lot to be desired. She's just one of several other goody-good characters in the roster, and that prevents her from standing out.
Btw, on the topic of her name, her real name is also very on-the-nose: *Angela* Ziegler. Amusingly, Medic's real name, Ludwig, means "famous in battle", very fitting for his proclivity to violence and just emphasizes the contrast of his character and chosen profession.

Well she said a primary way of healing because the dispenser has to be place in a specific area to be most effective, which could be miles away from where you are.
A dispenser is a healing SPOT! Medic is a healer that mobile. The dispenser can move, but it moving cuts off the healing till redeployed.

While I don't really play Overwatch, I admit that I like the idea of Mercy putting on the "heroic angel" act to hide from her dark past is a good idea, so much so that it may remove some of the hatred.
In Mercy's lore they were seriously trying to push the fact that she was oh so empathetic and oh so good and oh so brilliant while for the Medic the healing was described as an "unintended side effect"

I think they could have kept both the depth of Mercy ruining a man's life and having Moira still do what she did.
Perhaps something Mercy did crippled and disfigured him, lean into her hubris and his trust of her. Then in his despair, Moira says she can fix him and then turns him into Reaper. You still get more than an inch deep of depth for Mercy and you get to show off Moira being a insane scientist who experiments on people.
They actually said voice lines aren’t canon giving them an excuse to not add anything to her doing anything to Reaper

Medic is my favourite character, being a soulless monster (despite having 9 souls, one owned by the devil) he has a specific charm to him that makes him lovable
iirc medic sold his soul to the devil then surgically added 8 more (judging by his dialogue near the end of the most recent comic, pretty sure said souls were stolen from the other mercs), then died and sold another one of his souls to the devil for his ink pen, meaning he would have 2 of his souls owned by the devil
I’m surprised you didn’t bring Medic’s different Medi Guns, showing he can do more than just Uber like give crits, heal a lot faster, or reduce damage taken. But if picked you will lose out on Uber or the other options, so you have to strategize and which would be the best option for the round.
However Mercy can do both heal or buff damage with a click of a button.
