    A few things:
    To answer your question, none of this movie's story is based on any comic. The character of the Phantasm and her backstory was, to my knowledge, completely original to this film. And I think that's one of the things people love so much about this movie. It's a completely original story that nonetheless captures the soul of the character better than any other Batman movie.
    And, just to be clear, when people say that this is the best Batman movie, they often don't mean that it is the best film in the Batman franchise. What they mean is that this movie does a better job of telling a story that is actually about Batman. This movie explores his tortured soul and conveys his internal conflict and motivations better than any other Batman film. The Dark Knight may be a better movie, but Mask of the Phantasm is a better Batman movie.
    Also, one detail that I love is that the whole climactic confrontation of this movie takes place in the old, dilapidated ruins of what was a metaphor for Bruce and Andrea's future together. Symbolism, or whatever.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 3 года назад +7

      That's why the title isn't "Batman: The Dark Knight". It's more about the legend that surrounds the hero.

    • @calebmurphy9406
      @calebmurphy9406 3 года назад +3

      @@jp3813 That's a fantastic point, and I totally agree. Batman is more of a reactionary character in that one. He isn't so much driving the story himself as he is just the center of this sprawling crime story. He is the subject of the film, in a way, but the movie isn't really about HIM, if you know what I mean.
      Honestly, I think that whole point is overblown. I mean, I think Batman Forever is totally a Batman movie. So is Batman Begins, so is Dark Knight Rises, so is The LEGO Batman movie. I think there're plenty of good Batman movies. But I know that that's a point a lot of people make so I thought I'd bring it up.

      Mask of the Phantasm is a very loose adaptation of the four-part story Batman: Year Two from 1987. The killer vigilante in the comic was named the Reaper, and it actually was the father instead of the daughter under the mask in the original story.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 3 года назад +7

      @@calebmurphy9406 Yeah, the brilliance of that film is that almost every character in it impacts the story in a critical way. They all contribute to the legend, right down to the weasel who tried to blackmail Bruce. Remove one and the narrative changes. In comparison, Tim Burton's Batman films focus more on the villains rather than Batman himself despite their titles.

    • @calebmurphy9406
      @calebmurphy9406 3 года назад +1

      @@jp3813 Yes, every action leads to the next in that movie. And even though I'm more of a fan of his arc in The Dark Knight Rises, I kind of like that Batman feels largely powerless throughout The Dark Knight. Like he's just barely keeping up with the plot. But, of course, in the years since people have needed to find some reason to criticize that movie so that they can seem like they have taste.

Mark Hamill later recounted in a podcast with Kevin Smith, that on Christmas in NY, he took his family to see the film and there were maybe only half a dozen people at the theatre. He invited them to come watch the movie with him and his family and those few who were there got to spend "Christmas with the Joker".

    MOTP is definitely one of the most underrated movies in Batman lore. WB didn’t expect this movie to do much, hence the limited release in theaters. But they do have a sequel that continues after the events of MOTP, sadly it’s only in a comic form titled “Shadow of the Phantasm”, and led to loose arcs in the “Batman & Robin Adventures” comics, and “Batman Beyond” where it chronicles Andrea working as a mob enforcer still under the guise of the Phantasm. Definitely is a storyline that could’ve led to so much more had WB capitalized on it. But even 20+ years after it’s release, it still holds strong as a classic.

    9:20 I really wish you would watch at least a few episodes of Batman the Animated Series. It's the TV show this movie was based off. There is an episode called "The Mechanic" which has the origin of the Bat Mobile. Batman the animated series was great, it's still my favorite tv show even as an adult. There were a few episodes that won emmys. There were a few two part episodes in particular that were very good and worth watching, Robin's Reckoning, Two Face, Heart of Steel, and quite a few single episodes that were really good too like "Harlequinade" and "Heart of Ice". There are like 60 something episodes but the nice thing is they don't really need to be watched in anyorder. If people enjoyed you reacting to this movie i'm sure they will love you reacting to Batman the Animated Series.
    10:30 that's the entire plot of the movie. This is why Batman can't have a family.
    14:57 that's the DCAU Joker's trademark. He has an explosive temper but just as you think he's going to explode he calms down, starts cracking wise, laughing, then does something diabolical.

    Andrea Beaumont a.k.a. The Phantasm is an exclusive character to the movie/animation canon. You are correct most comic adaptations do take artistic liberties to the source material. Sometimes for the best, and sometimes for the worse.
    The story is actually a reworked idea from the comic book story Batman Year Two, in which Batman took on a character called the Reaper (direct inspiration for the Phantasm).

    The way you just tear into Arthur is worth every second of the video. Also, "Why you worried about those little ass planes, Bruce?" Two seconds later, "No wait, worry about those tiny planes!" I feel like there's also an analogue for Batman and Joker's fight destroying the 'city' too. As far as the storyline for Mask of Phantasm, and Andrea, they're pretty much exclusive to the movie itself, and the 90's animated continuity, and have not really been revisited or retouched in comics, movies, games, or cartoons since then. Why that is, I couldn't tell you.
    Although there is a VERY small reference in MK11 when Spawn confronts Joker before a fight and recites the infamous line, "Your Angel of Death awaits."

    So happy you reacted to this. It is my favorite Batman movie. It captures the detective side that so many movies miss. And I love the ending. The best Batman movies end bittersweetly. He can win, but at a cost. That is the best Batman can hope for, but the eternal battle against evil without personal happiness is what makes him a hero.

    The animated DC universe from the 90's has its own story and this movie is part of it. It's basically the Batman cartoon, the Superman cartoon, the Batman Beyond cartoon, the Justice League cartoon and a few animated movies. As a whole, it's really, really great, and has some of the best portrayals of these characters ever put on screen. They're not always exactly comics-accurate as far as the stories go, but they are always accurate to the spirit of each character.

    The Batman films do show Bruce Wayne acting as a detective, but the 1989 Batman film established a trend that has continued in the subsequent movies: Bruce does most of his detective work out of the costume. Whether it's an investigation into the Penguin's childhood (Batman Returns), a deciphering of the Riddler's word games (Batman Forever), a ballistics test to retrieve a fingerprint (The Dark Knight), or a series of probes to learn about the White Portuguese ship (Batman v Superman), Bruce is almost always doing his best work without letting that bulky costume get in his way.

    The music "Birth of Batman"as Batman dons the suit, turning to Alfred and the orchestra and choir singing the theme is one of the most epic moments ever. Gives me chills every time.
    Also yes, this is the best Batman movie(and one of the few times BTAS Joker actually got to kill people.)

    Just subbed. Loved your commentary. You're such an astute young lady. Loved how you picked up on all the details and appreciated all the emotional nuances of this story. It's one my favorite if not the best Batman stories ever. How he almost DIDN'T become Batman. Andrea and The Phantasm was a new addition to the mythology when they started doing Batman The Animated Series and when it was taking off.

    This was a great choice. So much more to watch and plenty of fans to check out your reactions.
    Try these movies: Blade, The Chronicles of Ridick, Conan the Barbarian.
    Or these Animated features: Renaissance 2054, Robinhood (the old one), Final Fantasy Advent Children.
    …all of the WB Batman animated stuff is great and Batman Beyond is a fantastic Next-Gen. So gritty.

    Andrea was created for this movie, named for the voice director Andrea Romano, who also voice directed Avatar the last Airbender, animaniacs, and much much more. This is loosly based on a batman story where it actaully was the father of a love interest.
    Batman's main love interests are as follows, actress Julie Madison(his first), Selina Kyle Catwoman, Vicki vale(a lois lane rippoff), Pamila poison Ivy Isly(who was incapable of true love but did have a crush on batman), Silver St Cloud(who was the first to discover his secret identity), Talia Al Gul, the daughter of the demon and later mother of his son, and then there were a few minor ones like the reaper's daughter.

    This animated Batman really embodies all the best aspects of previous comic book Batman versions. They especially drew from the 70s Batman written and drawn by Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams, a detective first who wasn’t as dark, dealt with more street level crime, and was more emotionally stable than the more recent portrayals.

    Just subscribed! This is one of my favorites when it comes to Batman, followed by under the red hood!
    To answer the ending question: The movie is an original, but the phantasm is actually based off of a Batman villain called the reaper. Who was introduced in Batman: Year 2. Elements of the story were based off of that comic, including the concept the phantasm waging war on criminals & having a personal connection to Bruce

    The 90s Batman Animated Series was in a completely different league. It was one of three comic-based animated TV series that I literally grew up watching, the other two being Spider-Man and X-Men. And this film is actually one of two feature-length films for the 90s series, with the second one being "Batman: Subzero". So before you check out any other animated Batman movies, including Under The Red Hood, make sure you check out Subzero first!

    Iirc this movie's plot took inspo from Batman Year 2, but also really improved upon it. Also like, Bruce never really learnt to process his grief properly I think. That's why he struggled with the fact that he's not feeling as sad as he was when he was a child about his parents' death. He felt like he should still feel tormented about it, he can't fully comprehend that it's okay to also build relationships with others. That's why people are happy when in the comics, he started a relationship with Selina, before it not mattering whatsoever.
