    There is a great story that Kevin Conroy tells. When the attacks of 9/11 happened, he was living in NYC at the time. And he went to go help out at a soup kitchen that was feeding the EMT's, police & firefighters. After a bit of shoveling sandwiches, one of the off duty emergency workers that was also helping out told Kevin he sounded familiar and asked if he was an actor. Kevin told him yeah and said he did the ''Batman, The Animated Series''. This caused the guy to freak out. He ran into the dining room and yelled that Batman was there serving food. And some came in and Kevin did the 'I'm Batman' line. and everyone just geeked out.

    The moment when Bruce stares at the mask before putting it on, like taking a deep look at the man he's about to become. And Alfred, even though he knows Bruce since birth, can't help feeling true fear when watching him as Batman. This movie will always be epic af.

      Right! Iconic scene. The culmination of all Bruce's suffering and loss and now the last part of him that could have had a "normal", "happy" life is gone. Now he's on this path, like Christ at Gethsemane, begging for reprieve from this destiny.

    This Joker is the benchmark for all other Jokers for me. Joker here walks the tightrope of crazy clown and dangerous psychopathic killer while still having that devilish charm (like Al Capone, except Joker pays his taxes). You can see Joker boil with rage and then in a moment he'll crack a joke as he proceeds to destroy you.

    The late Shirley Walker's masterful score also makes this a superlative Batman film. It has a richness and depth that's very atypical for standard animated fare, and has some terrific themes and motifs that help ground the film and characters - which is already solid gold in its own right. I was born in the mid ‘80’s, I was almost 10 when this movie came out, and this and Batman: The Animated Series defined my childhood. In fact, I am not even kidding when I say I was so spoiled by the quality of this that I spent the vast majority of my teen years looking for an animated series that even came close to matching it, only to be repeatedly disappointed. Nothing ever came close. Today we have gems like the Original Animated Movies, or even Avatar: The Last Air Bender. But back in the early 1990’s, this was it. This was the peak of animation. I loved this because it was a cartoon that didn’t insult my intellect or assume I couldn’t follow a more involved plot. And because of that, over 30 years later, this is *my* definitive version of Batman.

    • @nickmanzo8459
      @nickmanzo8459 2 года назад +1

      X-Men: The Animated Series came close, but even it was pretty reliant on cliches and could be way too obvious with its messaging. I was 6 when the show first came out, and I was also spoiled. The Batman and Brave and the Bold just weren’t anywhere near as good.
      Disney’s Gargoyles was pretty darn good too until it got way too convoluted.

    The original Batman: The Animated Series VAs have ALWAYS been my favorite because I grew up with them ... Plus you know everyone loves them since they used them in the Arkham Asylum games. Just like I pointed out with Catwoman in the Tim Burton 1989 version having the shadows over the face foreshadowing ... You mentioned it in this movie around 8:46 on your own. It was hinting again :) Also the theme song for Batman is done by THE Danny Elfman ... Go look up his works. He has been around forever.

    Adore this film and how it dives so much into the Batman and Bruce Wayne more so than any of the Live action films. There is the DCAMU a movie universe that is made up of New 52 stories but it's a mix bag some of the films are good like Flashpoint and others are just meh to straight up bad like Hush. But you have the DCAU of the 1990s and early 2000s that is made up of mostly shows starting with Batman Animated Series along with Mask of the Phantasm which is apart of this universe.
    The DCAU overall is just a better quality universe plus it has a much more unique look and feel going for a timeless 1930s aesthetic along with modern 1990s tech. The Superman Animated Series also has one of the best renditions of Metropolis it actually looks like a timeless 1950s city of the future rather than some generic East Coast modern city like we see in the movies or the DCAMU. If you want to see more of this Batman universe and don't want to dive into the shows I highly recommend Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker all set in the DCAU.

  • @paulsaxberg6399
    @paulsaxberg6399 2 года назад +10

    Mark Hamill is ABSOLUTELY the goat when it comes to Joker voicing.
    This is one of the best Batman movies, but literally any movie you can find with Hamill voicing the Joker will be an *amazing* watch (or react) - for bonus points, this almost always means you'll get Kevin Conroy as Batman and Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn. Hamill also voiced the Joker in some *very* excellent episodes of Justice League Unlimited (I strongly recommend "Wild Cards").
    The Joker in Epic Rap Battles of History's "Joker vs. Pennywise" is strongly influenced by the Hamill Joker as well (although like all ERB characters, is an amalgam of all of his versions), I also highly recommend that if you haven't already checked it out.

    The best thing about this iteration of Batman is that they actually put detective events into the story. The Christopher Nolan incarnation, as good as the first two films were, they almost never had any analytics of evidence to give him the detective feel. That being said, marketing spoiled the ending of this movie, as the Phantasm action figure had Andrea under the cowl.
    Also, fun to note the word “Phantasm” is never spoken once.

    1:16 - After the success of Tim Burton's Batman, the Animated Series was approved. It continued the movie's attempt to pull Batman away from the campy image he developed in the 60s. The show was responsible for reinvigorating the franchise, including improving many C-list Batman villains and even creating a few brand-new characters (Harley Quinn in particular). Mask of the Phantasm was created following the success of the first season. It found limited success upon release due to poor marketing, but is now considered among the best Batman movies.
    7:10 - That's _OFFICER_ Harvey Bullock. He's a member of the Gotham PD. In present day he's a Detective, an a-hole that's just barely on the honest side of the law. You saw him in that earlier scene at the courthouse.
    9:00 - Remember that you asked that.
    12:14 - If you were more familiar with the series, then you'd know that's the whole point.
    26:39 - Think back to your watch of the Batman movie. The Joker Toxin (called Smilex in the movie) is one of Joker's classic abilities. It makes a person laugh so hard they suffocate or have an aneurism, locking their faces into a horrible rictus smile in death. It happened numerous times in the Animated Series, and you saw its affects on Sal earlier when The Phantasm came for him.
    32:35 - This is most people's Batman. It's also most people's Joker.
    DEFINITELY do a series reaction the Batman: TAS. You will not regret it in the least.

    Maybe look for some kind of guide for the best/most important episodes because there are a lot of them. And aside from this, there's only one DCAU movie I'd recommend that's not already part of the regular series. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. That was the opening day of this film.
    After Xmas dinner, my mom told me to get my coat and we went to see this movie (wasn't planning on it).
    It suffered at the box office because of not enough promotion.
    WB just expected this big instant turnout and all because it was a Batman film.
    It was the only DC theatrical feature ever and on video cassette, it ranked in the dough and fandom.
    In the timeline of the animated series, it's set between seasons 2 and 3.

It includes Superman The Animated series, Justice League the Animated series, etc! It's one of the most Iconic and beloved takes on the DC Universe, I think you'd both REALLY like it

    It's funny you guys should mention the differences in Batman's voice. We actually see that come in to play where Bruce identifies more with Batman than with his identity as the heir of the Wayne estate. There's a later episode in the sequel series to the Batman Animated Series, called Batman Beyond, where someone is trying to make him think he's crazy by calling his name out to him inside of his head. Well it turns out that there's a reason why he doesn't believe in the hallucinations… And it's because he doesn't identify with his own "name."
    You see that kind of thing a lot with the TV show from the 90s. And I hope you guys honestly do take on reacting to it, it's so enjoyable and nostalgic and absolutely perfect in the rendition of Batman.

    There is also a crossover with Superman:

    I was probably 14ish when this hit theaters. As I remember, the animated series was already on TV, but I thought it had been longer before the movie came out. A quick Google search tells me the movie came just one year after the series started.
    I do highly recommend watching the animated series. Then, if you like, continue on too the likes of Superman, Batman Beyond, and the Justice League series. Even if you don't do reaction videos, they're worth checking out.

    One thing I saw mark hamill talk about was how he didn’t want the joker to have just one type of laugh which is why sometimes he sounds villainous, sarcastic, or actually laughing at something he found funny bc mark imagined the joker would find ALL of it funny so every laugh he does is the joker taking GENUINE joy in whatever he does and bc he could one day laugh at murder then the next a silly fart joke, every laugh had to be different each time ❤️‍🔥 and the fact that he played fire lord ozai in the last airbender later on as well as many other animated roles, I never thought he’d be such a great VA

    The animated series have about the best variation of the well known villains too. The episodes are like 20 minutes film noir batman stories. I highly recommend watching those too, especially because Joker is heavily featured so you can see what Mark did with his voice to bring the character to life.
    You get a more fleshed out world and characters than in this movie, because there is more time devoted to them, not as rushed as in this movie.

    I loved the 1939 New York World's Fair "World of Tomorrow" representation, in all its art-deco splendor. Even the Joker's jet pack was vintage. The animated series, and this story, are wonderfully and deliberately anachronistic - a 1940s world with modern technology. Incidentally, the 1939 Fair had the first appearance of an actor (Ray Middleton) in a Superman costume, a fact which probably was known to the filmmakers.

This is my favorite Batman because it’s great and because Roddy McDowell was a villain in the 60’s Batman and this one. Roddy is my favorite actor. Fell for him in Lord Love A Duck. He is hilarious in this cartoon show. I know Joker but man the funny bad guys made the show great too.

    I think Batman The Animated Series is a bit inconsistent. Some episodes are better than this movie but some are not good. Fortunately there are more good episodes than bad ones so it definetly worth a watch. Some episodes are so good that they changed the comics. Harley Quinn was created for the BTAS. I think you two should watch BTAS and if you like it continue with other DCAU shows.

    • @FuzzyDlop
      @FuzzyDlop 2 года назад

      There are no bad episodes of Batman TAS. You're confusing it with another show. The lesser episodes are "just good". But most of them are great. It's by far the most consistent version of Batman ever not to mention the definitive version of Batman. You're probably thinking of when the show became "The Adventures of Batman and Robin" which had less great episodes.

    • @keremmazman3761
      @keremmazman3761 2 года назад +2

      @@FuzzyDlop I've Got Batman In My Basement? Prophecy of Doom? The Underdwellers? Cat Scratch Fever? Those are early Batman The Animated Series episodes that even creators hate. I think there are other bad ones like The Cape and Cowl Conspiracy or Moon of the Wolf. Adventures of Batman and Robin has only two really bad episodes. Terrible Trio and The Lion and the Unicorn. The New Batman Adventures has only two really bad episodes. Critters and Love is a Croc. Early Batman The Animated Series isn't perfect. But it has more flawless episodes than bad episodes. So i would say it is pretty good.
