    The fate of the Joker is left unrevealed in the movie, but The Batman & Robin Adventures Annual expanding on the movie's events provides an explanation: Andrea drags him into the sewer below and they fight for a while until she decides not to kill him, seeing that he is no longer her father's killer but rather a raging lunatic with no sense of right or wrong following which an explosion from above separates them and knocks Joker into the water, where he is carried away by the current.

      Not gonna lie, that's pretty damn lame and stupid. I always assumed she "killed" him off screen and left his body there at the fairgrounds, only for Joker to just barely survive the encounter.(possibly unconscious) "you're no longer my father's killer" doesn't make a lick of sense.

      @TriarchVisgroup 2 месяца назад +1

      Honestly I don't think it was ever done better in terms of The Batman theme than here. When he decides to be Batman and that cue swells with the choir. It's so sorrowful and triumphant at the same time. This sense of dedication to a belief, but also the melancholy of, essentially Bruce Wayne as a person being dead.

  • @melmacianmage
    @melmacianmage 8 месяцев назад +74

    There's so much symbolism in this movie, and its one of the strongest Batman films thematically. Andrea is a ghost (phantasm) of Bruce's past, and while they are young and in love, the World of Tomorrow is bright and happy, but later reveals itself to be abandoned and taken over by madness (the Joker). In the end, there is no tomorrows for Bruce and Andrea as the world goes up in flames. Both Bruce and Andrea are beheld to their pasts, unable to let go of their past trauma to settle and find happiness with each other. It's a doomed, tragic love story with gothic themes. I wish other Batman media explored Bruce's character in this level of depth.

    This film is what convinced me that Kevin Conroy (May He Rest In Peace😢) is the best actor to ever play The Dark Knight. To this day the opening theme composed by the late great Shirley Walker chills me to the core. It is truly the music that embodies Batman for me, haunting, intimidating, powerful, and especially hopeful.
    The 2 best scenes in the movie are when Bruce goes to his parents grave and apologizes for possibly giving up his crusade of fighting crime to have a normal life with Andrea, that scene was so powerful that the director actually went into the recording booth to see if Kevin was okay because it took a lot out of him.
    And the other is when Andrea leaves him and decides to become Batman. When he puts on the mask and turns around Alfred is horrified, not just because of how intimidating he looks but because he is seeing the boy he helped raise become a monster, a monster for good but still a monster in his eyes.

    Hans Zimmer didn't work on this one (only the Nolan trilogy, MoS, and BvS to my knowledge) but I would like to highlight the composers who did. People typically associate Danny Elfman with this show because yes he wrote the theme, but a huge majority of the show's and nearly this entire film's score was written by Shirley Walker. Even some of the iconic variations of Elfman's themes TAS has were arranged by her. I don't know much about her outside Batman, but TAS and this film definitely solidifed her as a legend in my book.

      Yup. One of the best part of Batman for me is that Bruce is just as mentally screwed up as most of his enemies, he just ended up channeling his trauma/mental troubles into fighting crime. He doesn't just have a vow not to kill out of a sense of honor, the man legit can't bring himself to do it. The android that was a copy of Batman's mind self-destructing when it thought it killed Batman is plenty of evidence to that end. Yet so many Batman stories overlook (or straight up don't understand) that aspect of the character.

    Also O'niel funding and Adam Tools are references to Dennis O'niel and Neal Adams who did the writing and artwork for batman in the 70s and are largely responsible for him returning to more serious stories after all the camp in the silver age. Likewise their run on Green Arrow/ Green Lantern is generally credited as the beginning of the Bronze Age of comics.

    Truly history in the making.
    The first-ever animated movie/ theatrical release based on DC Comics.
    Great storytelling to continue within the universe and hold nothing back (romance, violence, death).
    Also seeing more of Gotham in the past with the characters we know.
    Mark Hamill is delightful as always as Joker and seeing him as Jack Napier (subplot wise) was cool.
    Dana Delany was the voice of Andrea Beaumont long before she was Lois Lane in the Superman animated series.
    As Christmas Day of 1993 was the opening day, Mask of The Phantasm & Tombstone (both with Dana Delany) were released the same day.
    It suffered at the box office because of not enough promotion.
    WB just expected this big instant turnout and all because it was a Batman film.
    On video cassette, it did rank in the dough and fandom.
    Tia Carrera (Wayne's World, True Lies) performed the song, "I Never Even Told You" which is an underrated movie song.
    Without a doubt, definitely setting the bar for future DC animated movies and the ones with Batman.
    Btw, Andrea Beaumont aka The Phantasm character was reconned into the Batman/Catwoman miniseries (2020-present).

    The ABSOLUTE GREATEST HANDS DOWN NO COMPARISON BEST BATMAN FILM! This has Batman doing what he should be- solving a mystery. He is supposed to be the World's Greatest Detective and yet most material doesn't havec him doing that. Plus when I think best Batman and Joker it's going to be Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill!!!

    Eric I believe is confused..there are still plenty of episodes in the current art style ..unless HBO max skips everything..

      20 more. Second season uses the same style. In season 3 the style changes.

      I still go by production/DVD order where there are three medium-sized seasons with this style, and then I count The New Batman Adventures (Style Change + Time Skip) as a completely different show altogether.
      The 65 episodes they've already watched are bits and pieces of all 3 seasons.

    It's really a shame when toy releases can't coordinate dates right and end up spoiling things.
    And then there is the rare exception like Disney not having any "baby Yoda" merchandise ready at all. How long did it take until The Child toys was on the shelf?

    15:03 It's called a blackjack or a sap. Basically a lead weight in a leather case that you use as a club. They can either be rigid like a club, or flexible like a flail. They're a stereotypical criminal weapon because they're easy to make and conceal.

    Shirley Walker’s music for this film and batman the animated series is incredible, not to mention her Superman theme for the animated series that in my humble opinion rivals John Williams

    Luckily they got another 20 episodes and another movie

      I don't see any difference outside of this movie. He was always sadistic and evil from the start as a gangster and became goofier as the joker and then that's it, I don't see any other transformation.
