For Batman, the animated series is for many of us, the best iteration of Batman. The studio was instructed to create an animated series inspired by tim burton's first two movies. they ended up creating a pretty ambitious project in terms of style which delivers the feeling and canon of the Batman comics. Mark Hammil became the definitive joker.

Some of the best character development for Batman in any Batman story. I absolutely love the idea that as Bruce Wayne was becoming Batman he has another shot at happiness and that was ripped away from him as well.
Also, as a long time Batman fan, I always enjoy seeing the Joker used well in a non-Joker story.

Bruce Tim wanted to capture the look and feel of the original Batman comic's from 1939 to the 1940s before the time of the Comic book burning in the 1948 and 1950s. All prompted by fears that comic books were transforming readers from potential Supermen into Lex Luthors. The Comics Code Authority was formed in 1954 and created these rules. Any depictions of "excessive violence" were forbidden, as were "lurid, unsavory, gruesome illustrations". Vampires, werewolves, ghouls and zombies (the staple monsters of the horror comics) were banned outright, and, in addition, comics could not use the words horror or terror in their titles.
This is the sole reason why Comic Books in the 1950s were much more colourful and campy compared to there original counterparts. We then got the Adam West Batman in the 1960s with a film in 1966 that to the mainstream audience was the Batman they knew instead of the original Noir version featured in 1939. In the 1970s Batman did get a little darker with the creation of Ra's al Ghul in 1971. It wasn't until the 1980s with Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, Alan Moore's iconic The Killing Joke, and of course Death in the Family that Batman/Gotham got much darker. We then got the Tim Burton movie, pretty dark more so with Batman Returns. And finally this was followed by The Animated Series taking ideas from both the Burton movies while also the original 1939 Batman comics, minus Batman using a gun and killing people which he originally did.
Bruce Tim, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves who directed the latest Batman film are actually working together on creating a new Batman TV show called Batman: Caped Crusader. It's said that this show will dive more into that German expressionism 1930s style more than the Animated Series did from vehicles, planes, outfits, and architecture. There's no footage yet but Bruce Tim compared it to his Batman 75th Anniversary Short he created, here's the link: ruclips.net/video/IFwOS2R9o_8/видео.html

One of the biggest criticisms of this movie, even back when it first came out, was that it just seemed to be an extended episode of the Animated Series. Nothing really set it apart. I think that for a theatrical release, they could have cleaned it up a bit more and kicked up the animation just a bit. An example of this could possible be the original Transformers: the Movie, in which the animation style is the same as the original cartoon, but it's just brought to a new level. I always thought the Gotham City aesthetic was captured brilliantly, with a very noir 1940s style to everything. Interesting fact is that the animation was done on black paper, giving it that darker look and feel. But the story was really good, the surprise twist with Andrea was nice, and exploring the internal conflict with Bruce between his duty as Batman and his personal life was all nicely done. I'm glad you enjoyed it though, because it really is still a good movie, even if it has the "direct to video" feel about it.

So I'm not sure if you'll ever watch the animated series or the Justice League show but stuff in this film does get tied up in these other shows. Its alot like the MCU in that they have the freedom to bring back characters or make reference to events that happened in other movie or shows. There's also comic called The Batman and Robin Adventures Annual #1 that acts as a sequel to Mask of the Phantasm. There's actually a really good film on this by Watchtower Database that goes over the comic. ruclips.net/video/jRwnTECWihI/видео.html

In the 1940's, Max Fleischer did a series of theatrically released Superman cartoons for Paramount Studios. These animated shorts had simple plots and minimalist dialogue and an art deco design aesthetic. Batman the Animated Series, of which this film is a spinoff, deliberately chose to emulate that aesthetic. This was followed by other, interconnected series in the same DC Animated Universe like the Superman and Justice League series. They could and have done animated projects in different art styles, for projects that exist in a different continuity to the DCAU, but this one is in keeping with the visual design they had already established in the Batman Animated Series and can be watched in conjunction with the show.

The reason for the oldschool artstyle is partly because Batman was first created in 1939, and also because they were heavily inspired by the animated 1940's Superman thematical shorts. The sqaure jaw thing Batman has going on must've been an idea taken from the 1940's artwork of Dick Sprang who always gave batman a stylzed dick tracy style chin. It is interesting that the 40's comics were such an influence on the series, when in terms of writing they were more so inspired by the stories from the 70's and 80's.

The reason why the animation “looked bad”, is because it was not initially intended for the theater, but rather, a home video release. Once the studio heads saw the finished product they pumped a few dollars in trying to revamp it for a theater release, because they felt the story was strong enough.
I personally did not mind the animation. One because it was a slight upgrade to the animated series, but also, the story was so enthralling. It’s my personal favorite Batman movie, and I stand to that.

I prefer Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker I just find that film to be amazing. It's difficult to recommend these films as it's like telling someone to watch Phase 4 but only the movies. 95% of the DCEU universe is animated shows that development these characters each episode along with introduced a bunch of new characters and story arcs. While 5% of the universe is tie in comic books and stand alone movies. You can 100% dive into Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker with zero insight on the Batman Beyond show but I would at least recommend watching Rebirth Part 1 and Part 2 of Batman Beyond before you dive into Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker so you get introduced to this new world of Batman. Watching Mask of the Phantasm without any insight on the Animated Series is fine as most people already know who Bruce Wayne is along with Joker etc. But Return of the Joker is very different and you'll be really confused if you don't watch at least the opening of Batman Beyond.

there is this dimension of frozen time where the 40's noir meets this spy crime world, and the animated series lives there. and the style is intentionally subtle animation and underproduced. it works for the series as a whole especially when the writing gets to be a little more satirical and smart-ass. the series has so many great episodes where it seems like both batman and joker know they live in this underproduced animated world. and they play off of it alot.

The future park in this film also represents Bruce and Andrea's relationship. In the past, we see it as lively, bright and colorful. And in the present, it's abandoned, rundown and dirty.
As for the animation, the film was originally going to be a straight-to-DVD release, but in the middle of the process, they decided to make it into a theatrical release. So they couldn't just change it suddenly with the increased budget, it would've looked jarring. Take this with a grain of salt.

A great follow up to this would be Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero. Much animated DC films are straight to DVD or VCR in this case so they're not Into the Spider-Verse levels of animation as they just don't have the budget but there still really good. After SubZero I would recommend Under the Red Hood a really good animated film that along with Mask of the Phantasm and Dark Knight Returns is many peoples favourites. Subzero isn't connected to Batman Under the Red Hood but it does acts as a good progression of the Bat Family as characters are older in the film.
Dark Knight Returns is also amazing but it's set in a dystopian 1986 so it's very much it's own thing. The film follows the comic so pretty much Batman was active since the 1970s but something happened that made him retire only to return after 10 years. In the mainline comic's Batman didn't retire so it's very much a fun What If story similar to that of the Marvel series. All I can say without giving away spoilers. If you can't watch all of them I Recommend Under the Red Hood and The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 and Part 3 these three films are gold and easy to get into.

Your preference for the characters and their stories/choices is not as shockingly out of left field as you might think. You are sharing the same aching wishes as probably most fans of the comics and their movies but the corps just don't want to expand on them in order to maintain the freedom of their status quo cuz they never want to make anything permanent in order to risk anything while in turn endangering everything. It's the ironic paradox they never seem to understand, and the ones that do try their best but they can't do anything out of their control. And it sadly affects every medium of storytelling.
But if you truly are curious, you'll get many great recommendations as many have shared before no matter if it's the actual comics, the animations or films/shows.

I think to answer you question about the creators inspired by 60's, 50's, etc. Is because they are paying homage to the origins of these characters. Marvel studios kinda updates their heroes for a modern age like how in iron man instead of being a mad men style playboy tony stark is more like a Hollywood star party boy or how Steve Rogers is almost a special ops soldier instead of fighting in a current war on the battlefield for the us government. I think with lots of other artists there may be nostalgia when they were younger watching films and shows from that era but also choosing to homage the fact these characters are old almost 70+ year old characters by now instead of updating them. Nolan did update his batman as well as schumauker but it doesn't always fit
