this is the kind of movie you accidentally watched as a kid, forgot about, and thought was a fever dream until you re-discover it again 20 years later
EXACTLY.
that's exactly what i commented
THATS WHAT HAPPENED TO ME
I do and I still love that movie it raised me
Yup-
This was my favourite as a child but it still feels like a fever dream
Such a good way to put it.
My farts are better than Alex's farts.
@@p-__Wtf
Same, it was one of my most watched movie as a kid lol
REAL BRO! I remember watching it but it feels like centuries ago, like you said, a fever dream
"Simon, don't you want to know where this goes?"
"Not really."
Kid is a whole mood, lol.
He'd be excellent in a horror movie, only survivor.
"want to go in the basement?"
"nah i'm good"
"want to read this magic book?"
"nah i'm good"
"i don't do conflits". He's the best of us
Simon tried to steal a book… A BOOK! I mean, I know his life was on the line and he was scared, confused and doesn’t understand anything that is happening right now but… yeah I got nothing.
The way I made my parents stockpile tomato sauce just incase goblins attacked my house was crazy
The way I started getting really into the real life lore about all the supernatural topics in this film and learned why they used salt to line the entry ways to their homes and the circles and started using actual witchy warding to protect our house from demons
When I was a kid and obsessed with this movie, my mom and I actually made a bucket of the tomato bombs that they made in the movie for the big fight against the Goblins. I didn’t use them, obviously because it would’ve made a big mess around the house and even in the backyard, so they eventually went bad and got mold on them after a few days and we threw them out.
I remember I used to go to our local library just to read all the books about the creatures, because I thought they were actually real and was so deeply interested, but also slightly scared, I absolutely loved these stories they were so whimsical to me as a kid
me salt in the windows then claiming I didn’t know who put them there 😂
Did nobody read the books!? They were AMAZING. Not just well written but also beautifully styled with pencil drawn artworks that immersed you so deeply
omg! As a kid I would love to have this
I read them, which is why i never saw the movie 😂
the art was so pretty, have you seen the drawings in arthurs field guide? the art is even prettier in colour. I think most people that liked the movie didn't actually read the books.
They were awesome along with the lemony snicket series
@@avengefullgirl95same here
I don’t remember jared having a twin in this movie. Completely 100% forgot that.
Same! I don't think I even realized they were twins😂😂
Bruh same 😭🤣
Same!
Samesies
same...
Personally I love the fact that they knew the dad wouldn't say he loved him there. It's my favorite thing in these types of stories where it's not "the magic fairies fixed our broken family" but "the magic fairies helped us process the problems in our family so we can accept it as it is"
They didn't get their dad back, but the kids did end up with a different dynamic that no longer required the dad to come back and "save" his son
The disrespect to Bates Motel is insaneee....called him the Surgeon guy 😂
1 meme recked bros whole career 🤣
CHAHLEE
@@TheRealLastJedi721 😭😭😭
yooo he and Vera were soo good
The concept of stepping away from a line and the monsters will get you was so terrifying to me as a kid
Especially if the monsters are invincible, which makes it hard to figure out when is it safe to walk out and how to fight them.😬
And my only hope...
To me it was Arthur realizing 80 years had gone by and he thought it had just been a day or two. Horrific.
That line was the edge of my bed at night! Every night!😂
True, but still that scene with Thimbletack going into murderous rage was still somehow the scariest part of the movie for me, lmao, I had NIGHTMARES because of this little dude😂😭
Out of all the fantasy films that came in the wake of Rings/Potter, Spiderwick Chronicles is the one I feel is the most underrated. Whereas so many other were bogged down with too much setup for sequels that never happened, Spiderwick was like "yeah, we're going to explain the world, tell a complete story, have an emotional heartbeat and be a thrill-a-minute all in less than two hours." And boy, did they pull it off.
I think what's great is that you didn't necessarily need to read the books for the movie to make sense. They basically took all 5 books & were able to make a cohesive movie.
@@TwiggyHetfield27 yeah, but i wouldn't complain if they made complete redo of series, with each book having it's own movie, i also would like a new movie series of Eragon
edit: i wrote this commend just after getting in video, so like 0:02 :P

I'd love a better adaptation of the Inheritance Cycle
@@helixsol7171 The result of my most recent visit to the toilet was a better adaptation of the inheritance cycle so I don't think that will be particularly difficult
Actually the Film was supposed to be based on book one and two only but then they figured they should round up the end (or maybe thought they would not get the money for following films) and then they just left out book three and four. So the end is sort of like in book five, but with more changes, to complete the film.
I was obsessed with Spidwewick as a child. I watched the movie, read all the books, had the feild guide and talked about it pretty much non-stop. 😂
Oh god. The field guide! The nostalgia.
same, i still have the field guide on my bookshelf right now. good times.
omg I was obsessed as a child and carried that field guide with me everywhere thinking I was gonna catch some mythical creatures lmao
I watched this movie, The Golden Compass, and The Water Horse on repeat as a kid. So many times. Any time my parents let me chose the movie it would be one of those 3.
I could have sworn the golden compass was a weird dream i had
Oh man, the Water Horse, it’s been so long since I’ve seen that.
OH MY GOD the Water Horse I remember that movie ! Good times
Holyshit, I've completely forgotten about The Water Horse until now. I didn't even know that was the title lmao
And the original Series of Unfortunate Events!
This movie SHAPED MY CHILDHOOD HOW DARE YOU YOU SAY IT’S FORGETTABLE
Yeah to say “no one” is such a bold statement 😭😂💕
Never heard of this movie until now and I'm 30 🤣
Yeah, I used to love it. Even had the Playstation game for it.
EXACTLY, THE AUDACITY???
thank u it hurts seeing people say that spiderwick dont go hard asf
“I just wanted to tell you I love you.”
“Wrong answer!” 🔪
Pretty badass for a kid’s movie.
I'll bet the reboot won't have nearly as much edge.
@@cartooncritique6625Edge. I see what you did there! 😂
There is something kind of cathartic watching a kid get to shank a facsimile of their crappy father. I’m sure a lot of children of divorce healed watching that movie.
It’s you who’s out, Gobby. Out of your mind!
WRONG ANSWER!
I was a very nerdy child. The Spiderwick books and extended universe were my absolute jam! After this movie came out, I got the Spiderwick Chronicles video game for my Nindendo DS for Christmas (that I still have in a drawer lol). I remember being so sad that they only made one movie for this series, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and for The Golden Compass! Nerdy childhood nostalgia peak content right here lol! (And yes, I'm still a nerdy bookworm adult, it didn't go away after childhood!) 😂
I think a series of unfortunate events has a TV series as well, right?
@@Ilostmycatand the golden compass show is pretty good too. The new percy jackson show isnt terrible. We eatin good.
Hey I remember watching this as a kid! I loved it when I was little. My mind was blown away that Jared and Simon were played by the same kid. I didn’t even know it was possible!
...I miss having that childhood wonder.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the scene where Mallory's hair got tied to the bed. That scene terrified me as a kid and It's still the first thing I think about whenever I remember the film.
Also people referring to the actor as the "good doctor" dude and not Charlie from Charlie and the chocolate factory hurts my soul.
@@chr1s415 I was forced to watch August Rush every time there was a substitute in band class.
I feel bad for him, he has an extremely intensely acting career but has been pretty much put in a box bc of that character
I feel less bad remembering what he feels an autistic person is tho. Plus he supports autism speaks
hes in so much stuff, a lot of movies from that time seemed to either have him or that guy from enders game in it.
Wasn't he also in Finding Neverland with Johnny Depp?
Yea, I remember him having his "greatest thing since sliced bread" moment as a young actor.
This and Lemony Snicket were surprisingly very good at cramming several books into one movie without making it feel too rushed or have underdeveloped characters
They are pretty short books iirc
@@TrashPanda90914they are. Sadly they had to cut the entirety of the 4th book, which deviates heavily from the main plot. It’s a shame because it’s my favourite of the series and goes into the world of terrestrial gnomes.
They absolutely wanted to get Dylan and Cole Sprouse, but Nick couldn’t get them because they belonged to Disney
For so long, I thought this movie was a nightmare when I was a kid. Until I walked in on my sibling watching it one day, I was so confused that day
"Ah back when time's made sense"
My farts are better than Alex's farts.
@@p-__ did I ask
Real talk: How many of us would definitely think "Nope, a mystical shapechanging creature" if our dads said they loved us. 😂😂
considering i dont have a dad it would be highly suspicious. 🤔
I mean I'd probably think someone needs a kidney or something.
It makes a lot of sense if you have the context of this movie
If it was spoken with absolute clarity I would.
Me. 🖐
I watched this when I was like 5 with my brother and it traumatized and intrigued me and now here I am interested in cryptids and folklore
OMFG I LITERALLY WAS THINKING OF THIS YESTERDAY LIKE “Hmm what the hell was that film called..?” AND THIS POPPED UP AND OMG IM SO HAPPY
Besides being kinda violent for a kids' movie, it also had the balls to address divorce in a mature way and realistically depicted the hurt that the father caused his children by essentially abandoning them. Lots of other movies at the time were fine with divorce being depicted as something the kids just needed to suck up and get over for the plot to happen. Here the son lets out all his anger and confusion by literally stabbing his good for nothing "father". Kinda heavy stuff.
Yeah, and it also didn't force parents back together. Most movies with divorcees would either go "suck it up" route or "aww, so they do love each other" route, which is really not ideal for kids actually living in such situations
I once met Holly Black, the author of the Spiderwick Chronicles. I actually met her not long after the movie came out. She's a super sweet person. When I met her, she looked exactly like you would imagine the author of the Spiderwick Chronicles would look like, but her personality was very bright and cheery. She has a very intense love for unicorns and Martha Stewart, which explains the presence for some of the cuter fairies in the book.
Anyway, she was incredibly happy with this movie. I think she was more flattered than anything that her series received such a level of fame that a movie was made out of it. It was interesting watching her eyes sparkle when I asked her about her thoughts on the film. I, myself, was not a fan of this movie. It tried really hard to condense a full series into a single film and it reduced a lot of the plot, locations, and characters as a result. Still, Holly Black loved this film and she deserves nothing but the best in this world for the pure sunshine that she is. I hope she's happy with this remake.
I loved her "Folk of the Air" series.
I never knew that this was from a series by Holly Black😮
@@marythewinter I heavily recommend it.
Holly Black made this series!?!? I’ve come full circle. Read the whole series as a kid (I needed the reading points) and then read the cursed Prince series as an adult 🤣 This woman knows what’s up with fantasy books! 🤌🏼
I remembered the books bc the paper of the pages were wildly different sizes on purpose, and the paper was thick, to mimic the journal: but it was functionally papercut-bait. I would focus to not cut myself, so now they’re seared in my memory
I read the books that came in the Cheerios boxes. Read all the books, loved the pencil sketches in each little book. When the movie premiered, I made my family go and watch it with me. I was the happiest in the movie theater, till the END. I cried my eyes out and still cry with sucha perfect ending. Great video❤ thank you for the memories❤
This was basically Gravity Falls before Gravity falls was a thing at least for me cause this movie basically ignited my passion for a good documentary mystical story or whatever genre GF was. It also spiraled me into reading the books and also thanks to Snicket's story I was roped into the mystery of the overall story.
Mysterious author of a journal with information of the supernatural, fantasy creatures and monsters, protagonist is a young boy who discovers the journal, family dynamics, villain that's after the journal, magic, a huge house in the middle of the woods. It's all there! I love the Spiderwick Chronicles and Gravity Falls, they were my childhood.
@@jmr.gif-YT dude not being dead but lost.
I actually really liked this movie when I was a kid. It was a fun, whimsy adventure, a shame that it never got the recognition it deserved
Guardians of gahool about the owles also a forgotten movie gem
This movie and Wrinkle In Time both feel like complete fever dreams to me. Like they just don’t seem like they exist in reality
I could only remember a small part of this movie and no one would believe me that it was real
My farts are better than Alex's farts.
THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME I WAS ASKING MY FAM ABT WHAT MOVIE THE SCENE I RMENWBRWS FROM ANS THEY WERE ALL LIKE ????
OMG SAMMEEEE for a long time this movie was just a blurry memory and I wasn’t sure if it was even real 😂
Same with Batteries Not Included.
Man, Mark Waters was on fire in the 2000s. Freaky Friday, Mean Girls, Spiderwick Chronicles, that's basically my childhood right there.
Quite the jump to go from Freaky Friday and Mean Girls to this.
you speak for yourself Mr. Meyers, this has always been a crown gem in my heart
I actually watched this with my dad while I was in college. I was living in Oakland and my dad was commuting to San Francisco for a work project. We were hanging out one weekend in the city and he said “let’s catch a movie.” I said sure, you’re paying, waddaya wanna watch? Yep, we ended up watching this, in iMax lol. One of my best memories of spending quality time with him, just the two of us. RIP, dad. Thanks for everything.
Spiderwick Chronicles!?!?!?! I love that movie!!!
I saw it in theaters opening weekend! Good times.
That movie was awsome
My farts are better than Alex's farts.
@@p-__stop saying that.
Same! Also anyone else remember Arthur And The Invisibles? It’s another one of those fantasy movies for kids that I feel like nobody I know remembers 😅
It is insane how much and how little I remember from this movie. I remember the mushroom circle, the sister getting attacked and the scene with the dad. Those bits have lived in my mind for the past 15 years, other than that, nothing. Not the name of the movie, not the main cast, nor the overall plot.
ME TOO I barely remember anything but the sister getting attacked, the mushroom circle, and some vague scene of a kid in a cage and one of the trolls eating a leg or something? Have all stuck with me somehow. Idk why that movie had an effect on me but it did lol I’m glad to see someone with the same relationship with it, I still think of it when I see a few mushrooms in a row 😭😭
This movie was kinda awesome, a good introduction to fantasy like a kids version on LOTR
2:48 And I see you're a man of culture as well 😏
This film had such a special vibe man. Loved it as a kid.
One of the pillars of my childhood. This, robots, bridge to terrebithia, cat woman, astroboy, and a few others are _so_ nostalgic for me.
Edit: And the character Mallory is played by an actress who was in an equally ‘fever dreamy’ series called Once Upon A Time. Nostalgia really is cyclical 😆
My farts are better than Alex's farts.
Wrd to my mother. I have the same movies on my list
Pillars of my childhood were Over the hedge, this movie, Spiderman trilogy and I robot
Arthur and the Invisibles is another one I feel like no one remembers😅. It’s the same lead actor actually, and even though it’s kinda cringy for me now I still quite like it!
holy heck once upon a time is the jam
my sister forced me to watch this film as a kid and i was TRAUMATISED.
i couldn't sleep for a week and whenever she would put the film on, i would run out of the room crying because i was so scared 😭
“ he loves trains and legos and hates social interaction. What could that possibly mean? It’s 2008, no body cares. “ that killed me.
loved this as a kid so much, bought a hoodie like Jared’s 😭
I still occasionally qoute 'Book, book, book BOOK BOOK BOOK!' It's just such a fun line lmao
I sometimes chant mulgarath over and over for literally no reason other than the impact this movie had on my childhood
Give me...the book!
I recommend the fairyopolis books to anyone who has ever dreamed of owning the book in the movie. Its basically a journal about fairies with interactable bits like envelopes/ letters. As a kid who loved the magical creatures and aspects of this movie, i always had the second fairyopolis book checked out. I believe the author has other books about different subjects like dragons and i think there's one about pirates.
They made the field guide a real book called The Sipderwick Chronicles: The Field Guide. Its like $20 on Amazon.
There is actually also one from this universe called "Field Guide" and it’s fully beautifully illustrated by the co-author of the original books :) it’s kinda like a bestiary, full of faerie creatures
They made an actual Spiderwick Field-guide. And the illustrations in it are beautiful.
that sounds like journal 3 from gravity falls
Yeah, it’s kinda similar! Though the illustrations lean more to something like fine art with additional sketches and the whole thing is beautiful and has this amazing forgotten fantasy vibe ❤ (illustrations are by Tony DiTerlizzi)
I sure remember it, loved that movie as a kid, I watched it RELIGIOUSLY, it's just so good omg
I remember this movie
It's still one of my favorites, great fantasy, impressive CGI
Very emotional ending 👌
I can never forget spiderwick chronicles. It’s a childhood favorite.
This film feels like a game you wouldn’t play with your friends when you were 9. Like if you pass this line in the garden the invisible goblins will attack you oh no. And I love that.
The amount of nostalgia I’m getting from watching this is crazy. I used to love this movie but that being said, it scared the absolute shit out of me. And it was on my mind ALL the time
Amazing how well you can imitate my mum without ever having met her
This is where I realise that the brothers were twins played by the same actor. I never noticed after watching it all the time as a kid
"Who knows? It's 2008, no one cares!" hits me right in the feels :(
He means autism right?
I remember this one. I just love the setting/location so much. It’s so spooky and pretty
For years I searched for the title of that movie! I jusst thought it was so terrefying back when I watched it...glad Alex covered it!
as a fencer, it always makes me laugh whenever they use fencing swords in movies. girly's sabre is blunt and the tip is folded over. they're designed that way so that they're safe. there is no way known she'd be able to stab shit. the best she could do would be to smack the goblins in the head or maybe poke out an eye or two. it's like walking around with a flicky metal stick - it could do some damage but really it's not sharp at all. (also the way she's swinging it around is killing me but hey. hollywood)
Legit question. Isn't the reason nazis in movies and stuff always have face scars because the real ones got them from fencing duels?
@@AdamAlvarez-hc6kf Yeah but they got theirs via German Academic Fencing aka Mensur which unlike modern olympic sport fencing uses sharp swords. Modern sports fencing swords are not sharp. As op said without protection poking someones eye out is possible but you are not going to actual cut or stab into flesh.
@@gokbay3057 I was just thinking someone that into fencing may have like collectables or something ya know
@@AdamAlvarez-hc6kf Actually sharp swords is a hobbyist thing but like not fencing. Fencing is a sport, doing it doesn't necessarily make you also into swords in general. Now a modern fencer could obviously be into historical swords and own actual sharp weapons as well. But nothing makes them more likely than anyone else I don't think.
People who do HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) might be the best bet for that.
@@gokbay3057 do you know anywhere where I could find info or videos of historical European martial arts. I didn't even know they had any but I dig martial arts
I hate you for making me watch through that entire "i am a surgeon" scene omfg
Omg same. I almost cried the first time I watched it on the show, and I almost cried this time too
What is that show even about? Every clip I've seen is just some hospital employees kicking the metaphorical shit out of their autistic coworker
@LowResCatExplosion he's a doctor, but he's a savant type character. Super smart, but terrible social skills and he can't interact with patients or fellow colleagues well. He has a tragic backstory involving a dead brother and an abusive father, he became a surgeon but he's constantly getting into issues due his social limitations, and they are VERY limited. Like this dude would not at all be a surgeon, doctor or anyone who interacted with patients first hand. He could be a consultant, but his social hangup causes issues constantly throughout the entire show. He's incredibly logical with the way he sees things and quite child like? It may just be the actor but yeah. I say all of this but I don't know the context behind the actual scene, maybe they were going to fire him or something, he was getting stressed out but couldn't actively show his emotions so he just started screaming and saying he's a surgeon as thats all he knows is true or something, idfk.
@LowResCatExplosion I've only seen bits and pieces, and only the full first few episodes, and they are rude to him right from the get go. Everyone is just really mean to him becuase that's just thw hospital cut throat world, he isn't adapting to that because he's autistic, and people continue to constantly be snippy with him for no reason or, several reasons lol. But from the beginning, they treated him like crap. Like he came in late to work becuase the bus was late and the person walking with him said that wasn't her problem and he needed to be on time, and he's tism so 'routine routine routine' they just grabbed the most popular traits from autism and blotches it all together. There was even an episode where he kept misgendering a patient cuz she was trans and had a wiener. Like bro, you went through medical school. You learned about transgender and intersex people. *what the actual fuck* I'm sure at the end of the day no matter what he does is hand waved cuz tism...cuz that's what all of the other shows do too. It's also very odd from what I've seen how often people don't realize he's autistic. Like, trying to hold full conversations with him when it's clear he had no interest in what theyre talking about or get mad at his responses to certain things but irl, there was actually a study done that showed that neurotypicals treat nuerodivergent people differently even when they don't know they're autistic. They automactally sense something different and engage with them less. (Which as someone who is constantly wondering if theyre autistic, damn) So the fact that all of these people are holding one sided condos with this is so dumb.
@@itsanoformedawg (admittedly I watched the episode ages ago) but I’m pretty sure it was said by one of the characters that they didn’t teach about trans people at medical school and complaining about the fact/ignorance (which was either made up because medical show inaccuracy or they just didn’t in the early 2010’s if you didn’t do a relevant speciality)
Tbh the main reason I remember it is because I kept thinking why tf was no one telling him to leave and having a word about it in the hallway
My siblings and I quoted "we means you" anytime we had to cleanup anything at all. We still do to this day
This movie randomly popped into my head and I’m glad you brought it up. I also remember reading the first book and an interview with the cast from an issue of nick magazine.
But for real, the fantasy setting with established magical creatures and one character going "bUt tHoSE DoN'T ExiSt" when another magical creature is mentioned is my FAVOURITE trope 🤣 The Witcher books have this too, I never get tired of it
People doubt a mythical creature in the Witcher? A world absolutely full of them?
This movie is so easy to remeber and forget all at the same time
Oh I remember spiderwick Chronicles. Those movies scarred me

Freddie Highmore was also Norman Bates in Bates Motel.
I remember the Spiderwick Chronicles very vividly as it was the first and only movie that's given me nightmares.
Mine was the wizard of Oz
THIS MOVIE WAS JUST A CRUCIAL PART OF MY CHILDHOOD WHAT-
i remember having a little sketchbook with very badly drawn creatures and putting on my dad's glasses to "see" the goblins
To be fair, rebooting this one is more understandable than some of the other reboots since this movie was an adaptation of a five book series and from what I remember, only the first half-ish of the movie followed the books and then just started ignoring them and doing its own thing. There was a t least one book from which not a single plot thread made it into the movie. While I do really like this movie as its own thing, it would be nice to get a more faithful adaptation of the whole series (which I do believe is doable even at the eight episode count as they are very short books) although I’ll be honest, I don’t have much hole for it after seeing it’s a Roku original which I didn’t even know was a thing
The weird Al movie is also a Roku original
It was actually all made by Disney but because of the strike last year they gave up the project and said they wouldn’t release it ever. Like it was just waiting to be released when the strike happened or in post production. I’m not sure how it became a Roku original but they probably just bought it off Disney.
It was going to be a Disney+ show but when Bob Iger returned to Disney he cleaned house. He wanted Disney owned IP only (Percy Jackson is published by Hyperion which is owned by Disney). Paramount holds the rights to Spiderwick and shopped it around after Disney dropped it and it landed at Roku.
This movie is the pure essence of nostalgia for me
Bro I love The Spiderwick Chronicles! I read the books in elementary school and the first Mulgarath scene in the movie terrified me back then. It makes me so sad every time I try to talk about it with friends because no one knows what I’m talking about!

I remember when flying to Europe, the plane had this film playing on loop; for 13+ hours... Along with Mulan
I was such a huge fan of this series when I was a kid!! I had no idea they were rebooting it! I was thrown on a nostalgia trip when I saw a kid checking out the first three books at the library the other day. The original movie didn't do it justice, but it was always exciting to see the characters come alive.
