According to Eastwood, he had six men on Penn, but after first take, he had to put two more on him because he was fighting so hard. When his voice breaks at 1:58, I start to tear up because the emotion is so visceral. Well- deserved Oscar for his compelling performance. Incredible cast!
I was one of the extras playing the cops holding Sean Penn back while he was screaming for his daughter. It’s true that he was fighting so hard that Eastwood had to add extra people. In fact, Sean Penn was fighting us so hard, he was also kicking us because he was so into the moment. The problem was, the background extras posing as police officers were not trained stunt people. We weren’t really prepared to be wrestling a guy, in this case Sean Penn, who is fighting us with all his might in his method acting. After the scene was finished, which in hindsight was an exceptional, one to be a part of … we were advised to connect with our Screen Actors Guild representative because we were background extras filling in as Trained stunt people. Ultimately, the Film gave us a mild bump in our pay for the day for having to unexpectedly act in a fashion that was above our pay grade or expectation It was fun, no doubt; but you can be sure that Sean Penn is actually and literally kicking the hell out of us in that scene.

@supastar I couldn't agree more with you. This is simillar to his acting in A Few Good Men, especially the scene where he is nodding as the gesture of agree to Tom Cruise suggestion for contjnuing to article 39.
I agree. The general public doesn't give actors in general enough credit. People think it's an easy job for easy money. While yes you can get million for one project and 3-5/6 months of work but it's not just showing up and reciting lines. You're not a good actor just cause you say and remember your lines. The real testament to an actors skill is being able to draw out the viewers emotion and show them exactly what would have been said out loud but only with body language and realistic face expressions! Plus long hours and tons of traveling.
"Take it easy; he's the father." That answered Jimmy's (Sean's) question. And yes, Kevin was great in this film, in every scene. Perfectly cast as a cop, because he looks like one.
His character isn't saying anything but his character is saying everything to Sean P's character which is why he stops asking about his daughter and just collapses.
Kevin Bacon's underplayed performance works so utterly beautiful, is such a perfect contrast to Sean Penn's amazing work. The non-verbal communication between the two is gut-wrenching
I remember reading some interview where Eastwood recalled Sean Penn telling him to tell the actor cops to be ready for seriously potential violence in the scene and that they had better be ready cuz he was not holding back.
Sean Penn extraordinary performance as a grief stricken father has to be awarded a medal for this . Everytime I watch this clip I get goose bumps and I cry every time. His performance allowed me to be right there with him.
Sean Penn is amazing in this scene no question. But Kevin Bacon NAILS it. His facial expression says it all. " You really WANT to KNOW the answer to that. Here it is. Now l am going back to do my job" I am a 1st responder (an EMT/Paramedic) and I have seen and been a part of those moments and there is nothing worse on this Earth than seeing that raw anguish. This was by far some of the best acting I’ve ever seen. Absolutely heart-wrenchingly riveting, grabbing, and beyond soul chilling. Adding to the playlist of best acting of all time. This man BOUGHT the Oscar in this scene
This has to be one of the greatest scenes in acting history. The emotion watching this makes me feel is insane. As a man, having one of your children die, especially in this manner, is the worst thing that could possibly happen to you.
Every father’s nightmare-confirmed without a word by the look on Bacon’s face. God, Penn’s howl cuts through your soul-and as a father of two daughters, I recognize that anguish.
I watched this in the theater and there was a lot of sniffling after this scene. It was so quiet I remember too. You could feel the weight of sorrow in the room.
Everyone talks about Sean Penn in this scene, but Kevin Bacon is great as well. You can tell he is fighting every emotion he has NOT to tell him that his daughter is in that ditch, and no doubt that day will haunt him for the rest if his life.
My dad (RIP) was never a big film enthusiast. A majority of the films that he would only watch were book adaptation films. This was one of those films that he watched. I remember him being so happy to see Sean Penn win the best actor award for this film. We used to watch the award ceremonies and I remember seeing this little snippet of Sean Penn screaming if his daughter was in that ditch. I didn’t understand what was really happening because I was only 13 at the time. I watch it now almost 20 years later, Sean Penn acted the hell out of this scene so well I felt my heart break.
First time watching on Netflix. Had to come find this scene and leave a comment, this gave me CHILLS all over my back!!! It’s been a long time since a movie has done that to me! I was like wow, he made that sound REAL like it was actually happening in my living room!
I've always loved this scene. And I always felt his pain, but I just saw this again for the first time after becoming a dad, and for real this hits you different. What a performance.
Watched this film again recently. What makes this scene even more heartbreaking is as tough and calloused as Jimmy (Sean Penn's characters) was, while he was in jail, the thing he feared the most... the only thing he couldn't handle and tormented him for years is that when he got out of jail, his daughter wouldn't love him because he was in jail. He admitted to Dave that he loved his oldest daughter, Katie, the most because she endured so much hardship when Jimmy got out of jail, after the death of Katie's mother.
Sean penn gave All he had in that scene. He is underappreciated I think in the actors world . He went from being a stoner kid in fast times to a man that could convey such emotion ..to honestly portray a man in anguish over the loss of his precious daughter
Almost 20 years since this movie came out. I was 30 with no Kids and it ripped my heart out back then. Today now with two kids... it´s simply impossible to even imagine... I would simply go missing in my head... it would take 10 men to hold me down... Amazing scene, an amazing director and an even bigger than-screen performance by Penn
