Here's an excerpt from a PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED Jaco Pastorius' March 9th 1986 Milano, Italy concert with guitarist Bireli Lagrene and drummer Thomas Böröcz . It starts off with Jaco soloing marvelously over the "Smoke On The Water" riff before the trio totally changes gears and go into "Donna Lee", performed at a super fast tempo! Bireli solos first and sounds great, but Jaco's solo that follows takes the cake in my opinion. Forget about the disjointed solo from the 1982 Montreal concert. This is how Jaco soloed over Donna Lee when he was lucid, focused and inspired! Chorus after chorus with unbelievable fluidity, richness of ideas and precision. As you can hear Jaco utilizes an octave divider for the solo, something he often did during the latter part of his career. I got this recording rather recently in a trade with Italian bassplayer Alberto Bientinesi who was in attendance during this show. I will post the concert in its entirety later on so this is just a snippet of what's to come. BTW Alberto has made several albums under his own name which you can check out on Spotify. Thanks Alberto :)

Think about those days with the ups and downs of Jaco.
I really don't know why people start to criticised the genius when we are talking about of one of the greatest musicians of the last century.
So please forget about his mental issues and focus on his masterpieces ❤

Nobody can cop Jaco's feel. They can get the notes, but they can't copy his impeccable phrasing. This is the mark of every great improviser, from Charlie Parker to John Scofield... they all approach harmony in generally the same way, but the way they phrase their 8th notes in their lines is very personal and cannot be replicated! Jaco had this gift too; they way he phrased his 8th notes is so unique and personal. RIP Jaco Pastorius

Thanks for your well written comment Billy. I agree totally. Jaco had such a unique voice when it came to his phrasing, rhythmic sense and sound. Not to mention his monster technique that only a few have matched even to this day. Greetings from Norway.

Trovare un Jaco così,i in grande spolvero nell'86 è una perla rara, e non è l'unica di quel tour italiano, mannaggia!non era spento il suo immenso talento.

Yes, it's a myth that Jaco had lost his abilities during the latter part of his career. When he was focused and sober like during this concert, his playing could still reach magnificent heights.

Dear Carole. I'm glad you enjoyed the recording, and thanks for the kind words regarding my description. I saw your post before you edited it. An octave divider is an effect pedal that enables the musician to play one note/notes which is replicated an octave higher or lower simultaneously. Greetings from Norway.

Bireli Lagrene said during this tour Jaco had days where he was in full mood and others less so....
It's a good day for Jaco
