Seats and Seat Belts Removal for the Porsche 911

- In this video I remove the seats from my 911 before I then remove the driver and passenger side forward seat belts. This is the first part of a series of videos that will document the next set of mods I’m doing to my Porsche 991. Although the seatbelt device behind the trim panel itself is different for the 991, the approach to removing the front seats, rear seats and the seatbelts is the same for other 911 models, at least the 996 and 997 generations.
*NOTE / DISCLAIMER / WARNING: The seats and seatbelts are obviously a vital safety feature of a car. Viewers assume all liability and accountability for trying to reproduce any of the activities performed or featured in this video. Always prioritize safety first. If in doubt, always speak to your Porsche dealer or local Porsche specialists before attempting any of this jobs*
Stay tuned! My OEM Porsche #911seatbelts will now have the black webbing swapped out to Guards Red by MaxSpeed Motorsports in Florida. I should have them back in the next week and a follow-up to this video for a DIY for the installation will drop shortly after!
Tools Used:
Impact driver
Impact socket wrench (or hand-driven wrench)
E12 socket (for the bolts hold the seats to the floor)
T15, T25 and T27 Torx sockets (for various retaining bolts)
Variety of 12-Point Triple Square Spline Bit sized sockets (for the 3 x bolts hold the seat belt to the side of the car - I needed 8mm, 10mm)
15mm / 17mm Sockets (for rear seat bottoms removal)
Trim removal tools (small/thin to long/strong flex)
Flat-head screw driver (small size, for prying open retaining clips on various wiring harnesses / plugs)
As ever, thanks so much for watching my videos and supporting my channel. Keep the comments and chat coming! More videos coming soon. Cheers!

Love the graphic montage and a nice bonus to see a video drop early evening UK time 👍. Hope you and the family are well.
Cheers Christopher!! You too!
I enjoyed the video so much, I watched it three times with numerous repeats in many sections. Great instructional content. A 10 out of 10 as usual. Thanks James!
Awesome, thank you Dan!
The only thing I watch three times is porn when I’m bored
Nice work James, I updated the seatbelts on my old 997.1
A word to the wise. You always want to disconnect the battery when dealing with airbag / pneumatic type devices, like seatbelts and seats. Firstly on safety grounds, but secondly to avoid an annoying 'check airbag' light on the dash!!
Looking forward to seeing the results, good luck buddy!
Great content James...you do the things that I have considered doing to my own 991 but I then realise that I dont have a Patrick in my life so best to leave well alone. Keep going mate I love the new red concept. Cheers from rainy Wiltshire!
Cheers Richard!! All the best.
Is it ever sunny in England
This is definitely going to be useful in a few weeks. Thanks again, James.
Great to hear!
I have to replace mine because of an accident. I would neverrr do it if it wasn´t absolutely necessary - too much work. Thanks for sharing!
Cheers Andre!!
the red accents will be awesome. my opinion.. just the faces on the sport chrono and tach.
Great video guys!! Now I'm getting motivated to start working on my 911. My next repair is replacing the bushings on my shifter. Wish me luck. Maybe James can help me.
SIGN ME UP!! :)
How do you remove the seat if the seat motor is dead? I can't move the seat forward to access the rear fixings
That's a good question! If you can't access the rear bolts, you're not getting that seat out I'm afraid. Not without either replacing the motor or doing damage to the tracks.
(3:25) "Porsche spank bank" :0 Too much information!!!! LOL
I know, I'm a classy guy. :-)
Change the leather seat inserts to red also!
Noooooooo no. 😜👍
Nice one James red goes great with Agate. Loving the 996 also 😎
As per your safety disclaimer would advise anyone to replace the seat bolts if they remove the seats. It's advised by the manufacturer 👍
Good call! Cheers.
Last year I put in new seat belt receptors in my 997. It's a Cabrio and the color had badly faded on them. The seats had to come out get at them, I was really surprised as to what a pain in the ass it was to do it...
If you’re changing the cluster dial faces...... how about changing the illumination at the same time? Perhaps blue bulbs......?
Patrick might like that, to go with his illuminated wheel caps. ;-)
@@AutoAmateur oh dear god no! Lol 😂
Dear James, I ver much like your videos.
Just one thing you may know..I would like to replace my comfort seats ( manually) from my 997.2 by turbo seats from a 991 fully electric and I am wondering if that goes just plug and play or if I have to change connectors and wiring as well.
Thanks for a short answer.
Regards
M
Hey Michael! I’m pretty sure you would need to rewire your 997.2 to make the 991 seats work. I don’t think the wiring harnesses are the same I’m afraid.
@@AutoAmateur thanks for your quick answer.
just revisiting this video. i want to raise the rear of the seat to level off the seat. I don't have the seats that lower the front/thigh area. will i be able to fit some washers at the rear?
Yes you should be able to, but I don’t know what that will do to your safety rating of the chairs. The rails take a lot of force along the flat bottom of the car’s floor which you wouldn’t benefit from if, god forbid, you ever get hit.
Ah. Never thought of that. Perhaps I need to find a way to lower the front instead.
James - I tried removing the bottom
Torx bolt on the seatbelt - and stripped it. Any tips or hints as to how to remove it - and what’s the replacement bolt part
Sorry for the delayed reply! You can remove the stripped bolt a couple of different ways but the easiest is probably using a bolt extraction tool that you can find in hardware stores or on Amazon. You drill into the bolt head with one bit, then use another bit in your wrench / power tool to remove it.
Here's the part number for the 991.1 seat bolt and you can find them from a variety of places like Pelican, Gaudin, etc: Part#: 9A7-007-483-00-OEM - e.g. www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/9A700748300.htm?pn=9A7-007-483-00-OEM&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlsD8h92yhQMV0SvUAR28iwQiEAQYASABEgI6pPD_BwE
@@AutoAmateur thank you !!
Porsche sells seat belts in the color you like and you install it yourself if you want, but any change for a NON-OEM product is an alteration of the original, buy it at the official service is cheaper, sure, anyway it is not the first time you install a NON-OEM item. But about tastes the colors. Cheers

I don’t think you noticed, but I am sure I saw a mouse with an old MacDonalds French fry, dart out from under your seat when you lifted it out. The fry looked terrible, but the mouse was cute.
Don't give me nightmares Rick!!! :)
Your fearless!
....or stupid... one of the two, maybe a little of both. Haha. Thanks John!!
Looks like a great mod! (So glad you removed the film; now your 991 C2 looks EXACTLY like mine!) Question: how did you do the special video "cartoon-paint" effect? Can it be done on still photos? Keep up the cool mods!
Hey Dennis! The cartoon effort is a filter within the software I use to edit and publish my videos. You can find similar tools that do it with mobile apps. If you want to email me any photos you want doing with this filter I would be happy to do them for you...! contact@autoamateur.com
Pat, you would have earned a Banana Sandwich.....or a Banana Buttie. We call a sandwich a “Buttie” in Liverpool. I’ll let James explain 😂😂
James should you not have disconnected the battery ? The seats have airbags in them and could be triggered also you could end up with an airbag warning light
Great point!! From all the research I did online first, there seemed to be just as many resources suggesting I didn't need to disconnect the battery as there were for doing it. In all honesty, I WAS intending to disconnect the battery but totally forgot about it and didn't... I guess I'll find out what the instrument cluster says when I get the job finished. :-)
Love the red on the gauges and clock as well as the calipers. I'd add the top of the steering wheel notch as well. The seatbelts?? That's be way too much for me personally, but that is a matter of personal taste. That's A LOT to remove for the seatbelts!!
Haha. Yup, it was definitely a job that had me doubting my commitment to it half way through! Especially now my seats are sat alongside my car for a week, instead of inside.
Ah man. Seriously. A PTSD attack from getting flashbacks to when I had to strip the entire interior of my 991 due to that water leak incident! One of the worst weeks of my life that. But seriously, how heavy are those seats!
Hahah. RIGHT!! Bloody hell those seats are HEAVY!
Depends how many motors you have in them, the 2 ways are pretty light. Yours are also ventilated right ?
👍 keep it up.
Some will say that is a leaf on your seat rail; I say it’s a Dorito
Hahahaha. Doritos? Gross. Could have easily been the wrapper off a Quest bar though. 🤣
I hate the filter. Please use less of it. Otherwise thanks for the insight on how to do the seatbelt mod.
Bah! Fair enough. Was just trying something different. Thanks for the feedback!
Yep, I agree, don’t like the filter (sorry).
@simon haha. Totally no worries! Just tying something new. #fail 🙄🤣
It's your car, but the red seat belts are sold by Porsche. The Red Calipers are indicative the bigger, type S brakes. You might as well put chrome wheels on it. Stop changing the car and buy what you really want. Again, i support you and your channel but ugh... Keep the car's integrity. This is not a Mustang.
Fair enough!! 🤣👍 Cheers Kenny!
James, I'm not sure if there is another way to contact you. I would like to leave my email here so that I can ask you some questions. I bought a 997.01 ('06) last week and am new to these cars. I have some very basic questions around the keys, locking, etc. that I would like to be clear on. Would you mind if I left you my email here and then you could email me so that I can ask some questions? If not, no problem. But I would sure appreciate your help! -Tom
Hey Tom! You can get me at contact@autoamateur.com or send me a DM @auto.amateur on Instagram!
You should stop working on a car that is already perfect and enjoy driving it hard. It is not an old air cooled car that needs work. I have not done anything to my 991S and the prior ones as the engineers build great cars that don't need aftermarket upgrades. I sold the two prior ones for more than I paid for them keeping them original.
Yeah, but that's like saying you don't like your wife to dress up in different clothes or some sexy lingerie. I drive the car daily, all over, it's just nice to mix it up a bit otherwise doesn't life with the old girl just get a little mundane? I'm still talking about cars.... ;-)
My girlfriend likes to be driven hard, sometimes I just want to cruise
Hi, the seat belts are not original, you have changed the color, but they ARE NOT OEM. Regards
I haven't changed anything yet. You're correct, the red belts I had (that don't fit) were not OEM and they're being returned to the supplier. The red seatbelts I will be getting from MaxSpeed Motorsports simply replace the belt color but the mechanical components, the harness, the bolts, the hinges and clips - it's all OEM Porsche, nothing gets changed there. Literally just the fabric, which yes won't be OEM.
Is not original porsche
....what isn't....?
Do u think If u upholster the seats, they won’t be original
