I think the original lights look fine and although perhaps not as modern looking as the .2 version, they have their own charm and better to keep the car true to original design. Still, if reversible then no big deal and of course it’s your motor!!

Your unwavering commitment to spending money on this car is commendable! I agree that .2 taillights look better. I’m assuming there is no way you could mod the .1 bumper to fit .2 lights?
Yes that's right unfortunately. The shape of the light housing is different enough between the two generations to warrant the new bumper. The lower reflectors also.
Great mod. I've been thinking of doing the same with my 991.1 GTS. Would you great if you can post the info somewhere on the parts needed, where you source them, and how much the mod cost overall. I subscribed!
`Hi there mate, great videos please keep going with the content. I'm wondering why you still didn't change the rear trunk grill from original to the gts black grill ? Is it possible? thanks!!!!
It is possible it was just money I didn’t have in my mod budget at the time and then I sold this car shortly afterwards to focus on finishing my 996 project car.
Thanks for this... No mention of the bolts lining up or not. I read elsewhere some do, some do not... Wish you'd shown us which don't line up and what you did (ignore or drill?)
Ah, good point Greg. Essentially all of the bolts / fasteners lined up with only a few exceptions... two of the four along the upper edge of the bumper, in between the tail lights and one on either side of the lower corners. Nothing that warrants any drilling or any concern about fitment.
@AutoAmateur thank you for the video! can you tell me if rear diffuser is the same between two cars? do you thing i can stick .2 diffuser onto .1 bumper? Thank you
I found the lights on eBay, but you can get the rest of the parts from any reputable Porsche parts specialist. Try Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas. They are EXCELLENT!
Hi James , do need to change the original rear lamp wire socket to fit the 991.2 rear lamp ? As I know the socket is different. Thanks if you could answer me . I'm planing to upgrade
hello James, Thanks again for this video. I have a 991.1, and I would like to change only the tail lights? Is it possible without changing the bumper? Thanks for your answer and bests regards from France.
great video and upgrade, of course it would look better, that's why Porsche made the .2 how yours looks now, well done, ill be doing the same to my 991.1 4s cab, will also change the front bumper, still deciding if i should go the gt3 style? would they fit?
The GT3 bumpers will fit assuming you also buy the appropriate hardware that holds the bumper to the chassis. The only major challenge is the front central vent in the GT3 bumper. I’m not sure where that air will travel.
One simple question: It's possible to "upgrade" only the Tail Lights( left and right) and keep the original bumper from my 991.1 4S ? I ask this question because i have some estetical defects on my orignals Tail Lignths and it's the good time for a littel upgrade. Thx for you detailled video. 👍
I'm afraid not! I tested the theory before I replaced the bumper. The shape of the tail lights is ever so slightly different, preventing them from fitting into the .1 bumper.
Hi James, this was a brilliant mod and I also love that spoiler. Could I please ask what brand your lift is? That is the best I’ve seen. Re the spoiler is it an optical illusion are or the gaps to the body work quite large? Is it possible to update the front bumper as well? One final question I also saw your video I’m comparing the .2 targa with your car. I’ve seen some that are very critical of the steering in the .1. Is there a difference? cheers Paul
I didn’t notice anything between the steering of the .1 and .2 unless you’re comparing one against another with rear axle steering. The brand of my lift is Cavalier. I got it from Toolots.com. I would actually recommend looking at Twin Busche instead. They have exceptional customer service as well as top quality lifts for about the same price. I’ll be using them next time. There is NO support for my lift. Zero. Finding someone to service it a few years done the road is a nightmare. For the spoiler, the gaps weren’t an issue at all. I think it must be an optical illusion! It looked great. I loved it. Cheers!!
Oh and lastly… you can replace the front bumper too but you might have an issue when it comes to the air vents. The .2 has active controlled air vents on the left and right to assist with warming and cooling the engine when you’re stationary vs in Motion and a few other variables. There isn’t a wiring harness for that on the .1. You can probably install the bumper but just have the air vents in the open position all the time like the .1 has anyway. You’re not losing anything, you’re just not getting the full functionality of the .2 car.
Hello James.. I was super happy to see this video on RUclips.. I went and hit subscribe on the spot .. James iv been thinking of doing this almost everyday.. my question to you is … will 911.2 tail lights fit with 911.1 rear bumpers.. without changing the bumper just the lights ..???? Thanks waiting for your reply
Hello James, new to the 911 world and still trying to figure everything out. By any chance would you be able to give a ball park number as to how much the total cost for this upgrade was? Really enjoying your content. Thanks again.
Hey Mario!! Welcome! Sure thing. I sourced a used 991.2 bumper from eBay for around $350. It cost $500 to paint. The tail lights were $300 each from eBay. All in all, just a little over $1500. The Moshammer duck-tail spoiler was a separate job and cost $1100 for the part (I think!) and another $250 to paint.
Looks Great! Good Job.... you made it look so easy. I'll have to hit up Sara, her shop is about 20 minutes away. I don't have parking sensors or backup camera. Are they easy to add?
Thanks so much Danny! The parking sensors themselves just clip into place. The wiring harness that carries the signal into the PCM would need to run back through the car to inside the dash, or under the driver's seat. I haven't done that part of the job yet. My sensors are just "dummy" sensors right now.
Hi Chris! They’re a brand called Caliber which I purchased from Toolots.com. As much as I like them, I would recommend looking at Twin Busche from PA, USA. Better quality for a little more.
Great and inspiring work James, the result looks amazing ! I am considering this for my 2014 991.1 C2S Convertible (I bought one with clear/white 991.1 tail lights that are not my personal thing...). By the looks of it, you've used the narrowbody C2S rear bumper and not (accidently) the C4/C4S widebody bumper that NineElevenSouth used, would that be a correct assumption ? I adore the C4/C4S middle reflector bar (and the look of the widebody as well), and am still in doubt of whether I should source a used widebody rear C4/C4S bumper (as NineElevenSouth accidently did...) with the fit and gaps and all that may exist afterwards. I intend to try it before having the bumper spraypainted, but just checking in to see what you went for here...
@@kianadanny Hi, I now have both (c2 and c4 rear used bumper), including a matching car (C2S and C4S) 🙂. These 991.2 bumpers ARE different in width (also because of the LED lightbar that is on the C4 and C4S and not on the C2 and C2S). Difference in width is 44 mm between NB and WB bumper. Since the plastic flexes a lot, I think you may get away with mounting a NB bumper on a WB car and vice versa, although I will now go for the bumper that fits the car just to make sure that it fits. For me, this project (hence for the C4S Convertible, since the C2S will be sold again, with or without the 991.2 C2 bumper...) is planned for q2/q3 2023. I intend to share experiences at that time. I can share Porsche part numbers in the meantime though if you're interested so you can try to find the WB-bumper for your C4.
@@AutoAmateur it’s on mine too. But they are pricey. Also contemplating a GTs engine grill. But also pricey for what it is. But I think it would make good content 😉
Great video, thank you for sharing 👏🏼 can you tell me more about the ducktail spoiler please… Is it OEM, or after market, and where did you source it from? Thank you in advance
Of course!! It’s from Moshammer in Germany, who specialize in Porsche styling parts for 997 and 991 generations. If you contact them, mention AutoAmateur for a special discount!
wow, lightyears better now - but i'm biased as the 991.2 is my fav ass of the modern porsches), ducktail is nice too!!! im jelly sir. just wondering - was there no issue with power supply to the taillights? looks like the same supply just works?
Another great video, and I've watched every one . . . . . but when will you be happy / satisfied with what you have? Not a criticism . . a real question.
Thanks! That's a really good question. In all honesty, part of me says I don't know if I will ever be satisfied fully but another part of me says I was satisfied the day I bought the car and it was completely stock. I'm at a point now where I love how it looks and drives, but my mods are becoming more experiments than actually mods I intend to keep forever. Besides my factory exhaust, I have all of the factory components, trim etc that I have replaced over the last year or two. Should I ever go to sell it, the new owner can have it as is or put it back to stock.
Hi - I could be wrong, but it looks like you added a 2017 - 991.2 rear bumper. Would a rear bumper from the 2018 or 2019 model year fit your 991.1 as nicely as this one did, or was there another reason you chose this model year 991.2 for your upgrade? Thanks!
I appreciate your reply! You could be right. I don’t know either. I made my observation based on comparing your bumper to the one on my car. I own a 2019 - 991.2 Turbo S. The rear bumper side vents and light strip on my car look different than the bumper you installed. It could be that Porsche uses a different bumper configuration on the Turbo S vs the Carrera? I never thought about it until I watched your video. Thank you again!
@@RayAMi aha! That's it. The Turbos always have slight differences in the front bumper (the lower running lights) and the rear bumper, as well as the side intakes of course.
$350 salvage bumper, $500 to paint it. $300 for plastic trim pieces. $350 x 2 for the tail lights. $50 new PORSCHE emblem... all in for around $1700 I think.
Go for it!! The engine will last another 100k to 150k easy if it is taken care of. Get a full PPI done, but don't let 57k miles put you off a car like that.
So, does that make yours a 991.1.5? ;-) Looks great, but you had me worried at "I hope I cut the holes in the right spot" LMAO!! Comedic content maybe? SMH! And I finally realized what your hairdo reminds me of, that 60's cartoon Tin Tin!!! LOL All you need now is a Wired Haired Fox Terrier. I wouldn't go with French Bulldogs though. They've been over done, don't you think? ;-) Cheers!!
Actually, the best MOD you can get is some track time and instruction. Ever since I have spent time on the track, I hardly drive on the street anymore...too boring.
Ah right, no thankfully. That's just the product of me using a softer light color in my lighting equipment, as opposed to a more natural color. At 11:09, if you look a little further to the right along the bumper towards the other side where the light isn't shining directly, the colors match. You're probably right though, under certain lighting conditions the colors might not be perfect factory match but 99% of the time, there is no notable difference.
Not yet. I don't think anyone has manufactured the conversion kit yet. You can turn a 996 or a 997 into a 911, but nothing into a 992 yet. I'm sure it will come at some point.
1:22 butt while driving my 991.1, I don't get to see the butt end of it. And I like "smooth" as there is less drag. 10:08 not keen on butchering that framework with a Dremel. Exactly why I like to buy my cars stock.
I think the original lights look fine and although perhaps not as modern looking as the .2 version, they have their own charm and better to keep the car true to original design. Still, if reversible then no big deal and of course it’s your motor!!

@@AutoAmateur thanks a million, I got two 991s and love the look of that spoiler.., I don’t have your courage to change the taillights though 😌
If you ever decide to go for it I’ll happily talk you through the job! Cheers.
hi can you tell me where you purchased that scissor jack
Sure! Toolots.com
Ok, knowing this, could I possibly put a 991.2 gt3 or gt3rs bumper on my 991.1 or is this not possible?
Yes you could BUT only if your exhaust tips are in the same position.
wow, lightyears better now - but i'm biased as the 991.2 is my fav ass of the modern porsches), ducktail is nice too!!! im jelly sir. just wondering - was there no issue with power supply to the taillights? looks like the same supply just works?
Same power supply, same wiring harness. 100% plug and play in that regard.
Hey there guys! What site can I order a rear spoiler for my 2019 911. I live in the United States fyi… thanks for reading
The spoiler like mine?? www.moshammer.com
Not a particularly big mod but have you retrofitted the newer rear view mirror into your 991.1?
No, thanks!! I've added that to my list.... :-)
Fab job James, quit your daytime job and help us out.
Hahaha. That’s the dream! 🤩🙌
what colour is the car? Is it agate grey?
What docyou think of upgrade it to the new one 2021?
The rear end of the 992 has grown on me. I think it looks very slick. A little too much like a Toyota... but still very nice. :-)
Canyou tell the brand and model of the elevator you're using? Best regards
Where did you get the new 3D tail lights
eBay.
Hi - I could be wrong, but it looks like you added a 2017 - 991.2 rear bumper. Would a rear bumper from the 2018 or 2019 model year fit your 991.1 as nicely as this one did, or was there another reason you chose this model year 991.2 for your upgrade? Thanks!
I wasn't aware of there being any variations in the C2 bumpers for the 991.2 model years.
Thanks for helping clear that up! It’s part of the fun, but there’s just so much to know and learn about Porsche!
where did I get the tail lights from
eBay.
What happened to the blue 996 eternally stationed on the lift?
Haha. A question asked a lot! Fair though. All in good time… 🙃
Aprox cost for all the parts ? You made it look easy
$350 salvage bumper, $500 to paint it. $300 for plastic trim pieces. $350 x 2 for the tail lights. $50 new PORSCHE emblem... all in for around $1700 I think.
@@AutoAmateur Thats a pretty good price for the upgrade
Hey man what’s your opinion on buying a used 2010 Porsche Cayman with 57k miles? What do you think is the longevity of this kind of a vehicle ?
Haha. I like to think of my car now as a 991.3... :-)
Actually, the best MOD you can get is some track time and instruction. Ever since I have spent time on the track, I hardly drive on the street anymore...too boring.
3d lights so much better. Diffuser though, wheres the carbon fibre
Hahahah. Ohhhhh it's a-coming. :-)
DOSE ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO GET THESE NEW LIGHTS AND REAR BUMPER?????????
YES DAVID, THE INTERNET! ☺️ I got everything from eBay. You can also contact (phone) LA Dismantlers.
Woohoo!!!!! All good. Sometimes even lux vehicles need a lil butt-lift 🤣😂
Hahaha. Thanks!!
Selling the old lights ??
Hey Mark! No, I’m going to keep all the factory parts in case I want to go back to stock at some point.
Looks like the color of the new bumper does not match 100% to rest of your C2!? 🙄 (11:09)
Ah right, no thankfully. That's just the product of me using a softer light color in my lighting equipment, as opposed to a more natural color. At 11:09, if you look a little further to the right along the bumper towards the other side where the light isn't shining directly, the colors match. You're probably right though, under certain lighting conditions the colors might not be perfect factory match but 99% of the time, there is no notable difference.
is it possible to do the same from 991 to 992 ??
Oh man, u gainin the newly married pounds. Congrats, btw.
Harsh, but fair. Haha.
You look like kurt nielsen :-)
Oh man, that’s just depressing. Tragic.
